I know that Kizu is a prequel, and I've heard it's supposed to be read directly after Bakemonogatari in the novels. But Nise aired first, and I've seen plenty of people say to watch Nise first, so I'm wondering what's the best watch order? Is there any pros or cons in watching either one first?

Kizu clears a bunch of things up, so if you would prefer the story to have more mystery to it, then watch it later. If you'd rather have things cleared up about Koyomi's past, then watch it first

Kizu is recommended on the first time watching through since it's the novel release order and follows the intentions of the author.

Other watch orders have different benefits but are supposedly recommended to rewatchers instead.

If you haven’t watched Kizu yet then definitely watch Kizu before Nise. Speaking from experience, you will want to see what happens in Kizu before Nise.

Kizu was better in my opinion but I would suggest to watch nise as it is the intended order from its director

Nah Bro, Nisio wrote Bake>Kizu>Nise, and Shaft had all sorts of problems during production so they weren't able to follow a proper order.

Nanachi's wisdom:
"Watch the Monogatari Series following the Novel Order."

Bakemonogatari pretty much sums up kizu, and I enjoy the mystery bewind all that while. Personally, i think kizumonogatari is the weakest part of the series, so I would personally say not to bother watching it. Unless you really like hanekawa, then there is a lot there you would enjoy. If you do, however, dont speak to me

Definitely watch Kizu after Bake. Thats the novel order and that is how the story is supposed to experienced. The only reason Kizumonogatari came out years after Bakemonogatari is because it was in development hell for years.

If you want to have a little more suspense, I'd recommend watching the movies later on, like after bake.
I watch a lot of stuff

I watched kizu last and I didn't feel like it affected my enjoyment. The book came out after bakemonogatari but the films' visual style is so different from the rest of the series that there are valid arguments for both watch orders.

i do prefer kizu but i also feel its better watching it later as it adds mystery about araragi and shinobu, and the pay off when you do watch it later feels really nice, while if you watch it now, sure it was the authors intended way but i just feel personally watching it later pays off better

Watch or read bakemonogatari first then go with kizumonogarari and then nisemonogatari. It's proper and better watch order, almost everyone go with this watch order..

So i personally watched Kizu before Nise, and i'm pretty happy with my choice.

Now, a lot of People said that they watched Kizu way after Nise, which is normal ( because Shaft didn't animate Kizu until way later ). But now that we have all the entries of the 3 first season of the monogatari series, you can now watch it the way you want.

I've already seen a lot of People defending the choice of watching Nise right after Bake, because it brings a lot of "Mystery" to the story.

Here's a small tangent about "Mystery" :

[ "Mystery" basically means that some questions will be left unanswered so the viewer want to watch the story more.
Now, if you put too much "Mystery", the viewer would just be confused af and won't understand a thing of what's happening.
You must find the right amount of mystery, where there is enough questions unanswered but some questions still get answered as the story follows, so that the viewer could continue watching the show to see more questions getting answered. ]

Sorry for making a tangent about "Mysteries", but what i wanted to say is :

"Watching Kizu Way after Nise will leave you with more questions than answers"

Becaus Nisio wrote Kizu right after Bake, every series after it will be using elements from Kizu.
For example, if Kizu introduces a certain object (which i'm gonna call object K for now ) that is very important to the plot. It will be used again in later series, it will be reused mater in the series. So if you haven't watched Kizu, you would be confused every time object K pops out in the screen.

Most people would be already confused : "What is object K ? Why is it useful now ? Etc...
But that is just basic "Mystery", right ?

Now, what about a character ? What about having an entire character that is shown in the end of Kizu, and makes several apparitions later in the series.

Everytime this "Character K" would appear on screen, it would be pure spoilers for Kizu. And the author wants you to believe that you've already seen this character, got attached to it, know his/her tragic backstory, including object K ;), etc...

At this point, you're lost.

If you don't understand what i'm saying, not Watching Kizu and only watching it after Owari would lead to various confusing plot points in :

- Nisemonogatari
- Nekomonogatari Kuro
- Monogatari series : second season (specifically the Mayoi Jiangshi/Kabukimonogatari Arc and the Shinobu Time/Onimonogatari Arc).
- Owarimonogatari ( specifically the Shinobu Mail Arc ).

Basically, every series except Hanamonogatari and some parts in Monogatari series : second season would be impossible to watch without various allusions to Kizumonogatari.

I won't say that people who watch Nise after Bake are wrong, because they probably didn't have the choice at time. Kizu was only adapted in Anime WAAAAAAY after Nise, and people just stuck with the anime watch order.
But now that we have every entry in the series, it's much better to watch it the "author's intended" way. It's normal to f**k up the watch order while watching the series, i myself f*cked up the watch order by watching Owari S2 before Owari, but you have to understand that following the author's intended way is the Best way to enjoy the series.

Also, small thing i wanted to say about Kizu if you wanna start with it :

Kizumonogatari is all about the bonding between Araragi and Shinobu ( yes, that blonde haired girl that is always with Oshino ). You might think it's useless, but every series mentionned above are infact linked to shinobu, and she becomes a much stronger and important character in and after Nisemonogatari.

That bonding is one of the main plot points in the different shinobu Arcs in the series (Shinobu time and shinobu mail)

That bonding is the main plot point of the 1st and 3rd Arc of Owarimonogatari Season 2.

That bonding is the whole reason the entirety of the monogatari series happens ( because araragi still have higher regeneration capacities than most humans).

The story will explain so much stuff that will be used later and will make you understand the weight of some arcs in the monogatari series.

You can't forget to watch it.

Aaaaaand i wrote too much again, Shit.

Honestly I just followed the release order and watched nise after. These days anime watch orders are so annoying that I don't give a shit anymore. It's not like anything bad is gonna happen. People watched it in release order and still enjoyed it. I watched the fate series in release order and still enjoyed it. Don't stress yourself. Life is short.
