Eh. Not remarkable. Not garbage. Just another shallow teen/young adult dystopian story. Mostly surface level understanding and utilization of social, political, and economic ideas, themes of media manipulation and propaganda, conformity pressure, haphazard caricature levels of class divisions in the population between the privileged and the unprivileged, all of which are then relegated to backdrops in favor of a burgeoning romance; all under the specter of an evil incompetent dystopian government that wouldn’t fly in the real world.

I rate 6/10.

Lmao. Ye, this is how 86 should be watched. Alone and solo so it cannot be compared side by side with its peers.

Big words = smarter person with the only true opinion that matters

Those are big words to you?

I just listed the common ground between 86, The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner, you know, drawing a comparisons checklist between its peers in its genre/style.

Was this episode an anime original or did it already adapt the 2nd volume???
The beginning portion of the episode (with the school) was anime-original. The battle with the Spearhead squadron that came after was from volume 2 (the first 15 pages of chapter 2). The end portion with Lena covered the last bit of chapter 7 in volume 1.

Overall, this season covered almost all of volume 1 and a very tiny portion of volume 2 (the 15 pages I mentioned earlier). The epilogue of volume 1 and chapter 1 of volume 2 haven't been adapted yet. But chronologically, they take place after the events of this episode, so the next season should cover those.

Thanks. Actually, I've bought the 1st volume last year and never got it in the end, so now I'm wondering what should I expect. I'm kinda glad for it, though, since now I won't have to unconsciously compare the adaptation with the source material and be dissapointed in the end, because of ommiting lots of stuff and rushing things (Like it was with the MT adaptation).
I'm really curious what is the epilogue going to be about, since they decided to not adapt it.

What a way to end this first cour of 86. To show Shin's body without a head at the end, it's quite the cliffhanger till the wait for cour two. Well I say that, what I am curious about is the special episode airing next week. One more week of 86 is always welcome.

In the end I was expecting Shin to leave them behind, simply to keep the rest alive for as long as possible, but of course that they wouldn't stand down and still ended up helping Shin fighting the legion with mere machine guns.. Obviously they stood no chance.

Lena actually visited the spearheads headquarters. My mind wanted this to happen many episodes ago, but now I am glad she managed to visit it. Maybe to find a bit of closure for herself after aiding them in battle. I do love the talk Lena had with the Lieutenant, who is also an Alba, who choose to go to District 86, cause his wife and kids were send there cause they were deemed as 86.

Now I personally don't believe that Shin, Kurena, Anju, Raiden and Theo are dead, I will hold firm believe till cour 2 that they are alive.

Overall, phenomenal Anime. Easy 9/10 (for now). Direction was great and I never had a single moment that I was bored watching this show. Animation was fantastic, with a perfect blend of 2D and CG machines, especially the latter was really impressive how smooth A1 managed to animated those machines. Nothing needing said about sound here, it was outstanding. Sawano smashed it and the voice actors nailed it as well.

Great cour 1 finalé. The episode starts on spearhead squad aftermath battle where they lost Fido. We seen how transpire way back previous episode. The squad supplies are running out. They find new town and they stopped on some Imperial school. Its a nice scenes reminiscing their past with Kurena being clueless but pretty happy scene.

And Shin attacked the Legion alone to protect his comrades, leaving them in the forest and find help. But they refused to abide Shins sacrifice. They helped Shin even if guns is ineffective to the Legion. And they fell to the ground by mine bots. With there status unknown even Shin with his fading consiousness.

The second part is all about Lena visiting the spearhead former base. She comes with new recruits of 86ers. And we know that she is suspended because of unauthorized usage of the interceptor cannon.

She meets Aldrecht who was a pure Alba, I feel bad for him. His story of how he is in the frontline is sad. Even wants to ends his life to be able to meet his family.

Lena saw the building where spearhead squadron home. She reminiscing their time with her is sad. The highlight of this episode is Lena finding the letter and picture of the squad.

The episode continues on Lena finding her new resolve to keep on living. And someday meet them.
Like the song Avid full song is playing on the background its emotional scene.

And it ends on Shin meeting his brother and Shin status is unknown.

Overall great 1cour and patiently waiting for the next cour. They adapt it wonderfully. The direction is on point this episode too

86 is definitely the frontrunner for anime of the season for me right now.

It's quite depressing to know that there wont be 86 episodes releasing every week anymore, and that I'll have to wait for a 2nd installment to come out. Nevertheless, I loved this season a lot. The Spearhead Squadron keep pushing on no matter what consequences they may face, and Lena finally came to visit their camp. It's depressing that Lena and the 86 didn't get to meet in this season, but that's more reason to look forward to the next season.

Man what an incredible adaptation 86 has had. First cour was fantastic. It was consistent till the end. It's basically everything you'd expect from an adaptation. Really loved how they balanced both Lena and Shin's side of things and their prospective throughout the anime. The songs and OSTs were so great. Sawano Hiroyuki nailed it again. The characters were really good. Loved how they still left a final message for Lena, knowing that she might come. It ended with a huge cliffhanger but made me super excited for what's to come. Definitely one of my favourites and one of the best anime of the season. I just can't wait for the second cour. Really looking forward to it.

Amazing adaptation by A-1, it not only adapts the source material but elevates it. It also made the info dumping a bit more tied to the plot instead of it being a simple info dump.

Can't wait for the second cour, I really hope it will become more popular in Japan so we can get the other volumes adapted too T_T But anyway, I wonder if next season will be vol2 and 3 or just volume 2!

Shin's scene with his bro was very emotional in the end. And ngl, seeing Lena come to the 86 sector and seeing the photograph, everyones messages and the cat she will be taking care of was really moving. I'm sure she'll keep moving forward just like the rest of them!

Another thing I liked is that 86 didn't skim over the topic of racism and the inequality between Lena and the 86 instead of forcing a magical friendship between them.

All in all I loved this anime and it def made me read the source material too. The second cour can't come soon enough 9/10

Thank god they left off the epilogue. Nice to see A-1 adjust the fact that the original volume was supposed to be a one-off and not made as the start to a long series, so the freshness of the upcoming 2nd season is retained here without any spoiling.

Great episode to conclude what was truly a great anime and a phenomenal adaptation from A-1 Pictures, something I would never say about an A-1 anime given how many bland adaptations they've done over the years. The final episode adapted very little but even so, was a tremendous little conclusion to this chapter while leaving me anticipating the next one to come in the 2nd season.

I'd go with a strong 9/10 for this, maybe a 9.3/10 as it's close to that 10 mark on MAL but not quite there if I really compare it to the other anime I have at a 10. But so, so close. So many things were done well from an adaptation perspective that really enhanced the material of the first volume, with the director getting the most out of nothing in terms of amount of content. My 2nd favorite anime of the year so far behind Mushoku Tensei (that adaptation and material is just on another level that it's on my favorites list) and definitely one of the best seasonals I've seen personally in my 4+ years of seasonal watching.

Very very good episode and a good anime overall. So, now that the first cour is finally over, I can now peacefully sit and read the first two volumes which I purchased. Can't wait for more Spearhead Squadron hype. It started out alright, and finished with a bang, not to mention that the animation and the OSTs were on point.

If you want to test whether a person has critical thinking and the ability to build simple chains of logic, then show him this anime.
If he says he liked it, congratulations, you already know the answer.

If my words seem rude or provocative to you, just try taking one sip of beer every time you see some plot inconsistency or hole in this show.
By the middle of the eighth mug, you'll probably know what I mean.

This anime has great graphics, music and everything else that isn't about the plot. But as soon as you start thinking about the plot, all that beautiful visuals fall apart.

The last episode should have brought a tear to my eye, but all it did was make me laugh. A silly reference to World War I in the form of a book that shouldn't be in this world. The frontier of the empire is three days' leisurely drive away. The inadequate behavior of the Legion, which can't destroy the squad of five-man infiltrators it has already discovered. Bringing super long-range artillery into close proximity.

If you think about it seriously, don't you think people could have lost to this Skynet on Chinese firmware only if they had fought him with water balloons and water cannons.

And my favorite. The rifles and pistols they were given, even though the only targets they can use them against are the Albas. The rifles and pistols they were given, even though the only targets they can use them against are the Albians. Those robots that were let in for one episode don't count, as this was obviously done to make the death of the rest of the squad look less weird and silly.

5/10 Out of sheer respect for the opening and animation of the juggernauts.

Giving this 10/10. A1 Pictures has really outdone themselves barring Kaguya Sama, having previously been weighted down by the bad reputation of bland adaptations in the past.

Wasn't completely flawless by any means, but everything just really clicked at least for me from the stellar directing to the subtleties to the profound themes to the character interactions and growth.

I understand this isn't a show people will universally love, but I'd hope more people can give it a chance as it's not something you can just watch at face value and nitpick just because of the inability to not understand.

I like the fact that they left out the epilogue in vol 1 as they recognized it as a one-shot story, so the refreshing feeling of cour 2 coming along can be sustained. One of the best adaptations of any manga or LN I've seen as they enhanced and respected the source material SOOOO MUCH.

That three months (or longer) wait for Cour 2 is gonna be painful, though lul.

From what I could gather from the different episode forums I was following, A-1 pictures must have done an incredible job adapting the source material that I now plan to read. Even by being unfamiliar to it, I could probably fill in the blanks of what might've happened in between some scenes as well as how different events were being foreshadowed by the sheer amount of symbolism being presented by the characters actions and their environment.

Speaking of which, the animation was just superb. From the backgrounds to the expressions, everything was visually outstanding. Nonetheless, my enjoyment came from how brutal the ride was. Every episode had a scene that kept me on my toes and portrayed the 86-ers' hardships on the battlefield, while also leaving some space to develop their personalities in between. Aside from that, the soundtrack was catchy and the way the opening and ending sequences changed throughout was certainly good attention to detail.

I've got not much else to add other than that I'm looking forward to how the story continues next season. Easily recommendable.

Damn, shit went down. I really wonder if they all got turned into legion at the end there. That long range legion was scary, could it be that we might get a POV from that side on how the AIs overthrew them? Just thinking that because of the "I'll protect the princess!!!" bit. Seemed important.

I am curious what the special might be next week.

For something I picked up on a whim because "meh, cover has cool mechas but it will probably suck" this really turned out to be a solid 9/10 for me. Build up was slow at first but it was totally worth it. (please note I am also a non LN reader)

So the first cour of 86 ends with the Spearhead squad making a final stand against the Legion. With Fido gone this was as far as Spearhead can go and they can only avoid the enemy for so long. Shin tried to sacrifice himself by fighting the Legion alone, but his friends came anyway to provide some help. It's unclear whether Shin is dead or not, but I guess we'll have to wait until the second cour to find out. Lena on the other hand has been placed on house arrest and she visits the front line where the Spearhead squad was camped at before they left. She ends up finding all the stuff they left behind including a letter with all their names on it.She also meets Aldrecht who is happens to be an Alba, but came to the front lines because his wife and children were listed as 86. It seems like Lena is determined that one day she will see them again

Not a spoiler, just my guesses based on what I’ve learned from the anime story so far.
