THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This episode was kinda silly, mostly because of the character personalities in particular Ryu.

This seems like a buildup episode and Tao Ren ready to prove himself to the world again. Quite interested in seeing what direction this season will head towards.

Well... before I start talking about the episode, I do have to adress the fact this is the first time the anime actually aired 5:55 JST

So far while the episode was scheduled to air 5:55 it always started airing 6:00. The mid episode commercial was also extremely short, 4 ads and back in action. (do not believe it made it much longer than other episodes though, just timed differently)

Okay back to the episode, man it was dialogue heavy. And yes it was mostly a slowdown episode. We got the fight with Boz, but well nobody cares about boz anywyas.
That being said, Yuuki Hayashi finally putting in work, (as said earlier I think his job on eps 1 - 8.... wasn't up to his standard) but the music composed for this throwaway pair ALMOST made them feel fun, and that's a huge compliment ^^'.

We got very little of the opening ceremony, sadly none of the last week's dialogue made it in, and I have no idea why was the scene near pitch black - you are showing us some very important characters - let the audience actually see them.

Interestingly we didn't get any Native American Hao (outside of his single appearance in during the comet scene) we skipped right ahead to tournament clothes, and even his Tipi didn't make it in.

I'm honestly not super happy with these cuts, these will make stuff come out of nowhere. Ok mini rant over.

We are tying the last loose ends that need to be tied before the point of no return - the Shaman Fight proper. Characters got their last period of time to say goodbye to their families and properly warned that they most likely will NOT make it back home, and well they are using their time to the best of their ability.

And of course Ren travels back to China, he comes to terms with his sins, the match with Yoh was the final proof that you can obtain power without being a murderous psychopath. It also proves that you can beat enemies with more spiritual prowess than you posses - so it's time to pay back En for bringing up Ren eh?
(I'm really glad the train scene made it in pretty much in full, very important for understanding Ren's character)

I'd say it was a 5/5 episode. There wasn't anything that spectacular going on, but it did everything the source material required, with minor "future problem" cuts. Also the music was great and again Boz were a waste of screentime in the source material aswell, so not something to fault the adaptation for

EDIT : Official Shaman King 2021 twitter just announced the Boz songs will be up for purchase starting later today

Wow! 4 chapters adapted into an episode! Whilst I haven't has as many issues with the pacing as some people, I think a lot of those that didn't like the fast pace would very much appreciate this episode.

I love how they actually made soundtracks for Bo'z and are actually releasing it as a character song later down the line.

Also those shadows in the opening ceremony! X-Laws, Hao's team and even Gandala got animated!

Mmm, I didn't like these new characters at all, but I agree with them, I'm not interested in your story Ryu...
Ohhh, I guess that's Yoh's twin that appeared in the first episode isn't it? 0.0

Ryu became a Shaman and manage to qualify for Shaman Fight too eh

Ren redemption arc begins, he knows he cannot be forgiven on the countless killings he has done but he wants to change the world for the better so "the end justifies the means?" lol

Like how those steamed buns solidified Ren's resolve, Ren has also been solidified as my favorite character. Pretty good episode! It was a needed cooldown episode, except for Boz lmao. Their songs were actually kind of a bop, and we finally officially see Hao. Really looking forward to the next episode to see Ren kick some Tao family ass.

I'm just giving this a 3. This was such a weird and bizarre episode. Ren's arc worked for me, even though at first I was thinking they had become 'friends' way too fast, but it turned out to be a little more complicated than that.

Ryu with being a Shaman came kind out of nowhere and just too quick. I literally don't remember this chapter from the manga, at all, so obviously it didn't leave much of an impression on me. Add in the bad subs I read, yeah, not my favorite. Could've been story or the pacing this time, but kinda just eh overall to me.
Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.
Anger can be powerful but can only get you so far. Let people into your life even if some of them leave you in time.

Fight. Like. Hell. For everything and everyone you love. Always.

I always love downtime episodes like this. Watching everyone bounce off of each other during the party was super enjoyable. I'm also glad the BoZ fight happened where it was supposed to instead of randomly interrupting the next arc like it did in the 2001 anime. Ren in the train was the highlight for me. One of my favorite moments with him, and it was adapted so well.

A fun episode indeed. It was quite lighthearted in comparison to previous episodes. Everyone having fun with each other and enjoying their time.

The monk brothers were funny in the beginning but became a pain in the ass for Yoh as they took Amidamaru from him. They also are in the Shaman King race, so it's better for them to take out an opponent earlier. Also, got to meet Wooden Sword Ryu who also became Shaman. LOL. Ren is also changing inside.

Some cute Tamao moments this episode so that's nice. Again Ryu just becomes a shaman and wins 2 fights off screen. I guess I don't care too much about them showing that anyway. And our first time seeing Hao other than as a baby in episode 1. Overall a good episode.

A cooldown episode before the Shaman Fight will change lives forever.

Tamao and Yoh strolling grocery, and the Boz duo of singing monks Zen and Ryo sure make a hell of a weird impression, and springing "factually" correct late 90s feel based on mangaka Hiroyuki Takei's style.

A prelude battle between Yoh and Boz, but Ryu's inclusion as a formal Shaman must've surprised even Yoh. The first ever look of Hao is a preface.

Sad that the opening ceremony wasn't much of a showing, but the "power of friendship" cliche always works to deliver an ancient piece of work. And with Tao Ren going back to China to face a new challenge and heart to overthrow his own family, a new destiny awaits the former rival.

Loved this one. The gang is starting to get together.

I was happy we got cameos all over from very important characters for the rest of the series, we finally got to see Hao more properly, Ryu is back and Ren got character development.

I am not sure do I remember well, but in the original Ren's revenge was lengthy? Was everything properly adapted from the manga there or did it contain anime original scenes?

In 2001 it was 3 episodes long, had 2 anime original fights added and a bunch of character banter.

We do not have episode titles for 2021, to my knowledge at least. And it's too early for pre-release screenshots, but looking at the episode preview it is possible we are getting 2 episodes for this one, which would be nice, otherwise we'd have epiosde 7 all over again (which is still a possibility though. Sometimes even pre-release screens can give you the wrong idea, let alone preview)

It will be two episodes for sure, episode 13 title is "And Hao" so episodes 11 and 12 will be for Ren😄

Its now episode 10 and its getting good.. with rens actions, i would have to agree with him that he must get rid of the source of all hatred in his life, and that is by defeating his father to become free himself.. as explained by his sister, ren is supposed to be a kind soul, where he is partnered with a heroic soul.. all that is after he saw how people can be kind to him, even if he is tainted himself with the blood of many.. if i were in rens shoes, i would feel the same if i were also in his situation.. all that anger and rage in ones heart, just cant be contained, for it had to go somewhere just like all emotions do.. do not contain, but reroute everything, and find something else for that something.. just what will be the outcome of rens vengeance? As the tao family arc unfolds.. and with ryus arrival, the gang of friends is almost forming.. tho what would hao be intending to do? As he sent some people to get rid of yoh in advance.. also, its also good to have friends that u can really trust, to see one of the pillars of light of humanity.. anyways, i rate the episode a 4.5 of 5, 4.5 for both story and art.. :)

Yes it did happen, no it doesn't mean anything.

The Boz explained that they know Yoh lives with an Itako, so they aren't going to waste their time exorcising Amidamaru, whom she could just summon back.
That's why they were stealing his memorial tablet - you can't summon back a spirit that never left. Ponchi and Konchi were just removed from the fight so Tamao can't get in the way - again, exorcism means nothing in this scenario

Except I know Anna can bring back those who have crossed over.... but just temporarily.

You saw that with Mosuke and then Pyron's master, but again, temporary, right?

I liked the brief character cameos we got to see in the opening ceremony. Nothing too eventful happened in this episode, as it was more of a cooldown before Ren's arc. The Hao appearance was cool though.

Then why was it a big deal before when it almost happened to Amidamaru? He would've also been forcibly pulled and/or forced.

The bit with Ryu just coming out of nowhere and giving exposition of how and why he's suddenly a Shaman in this episode didn't work at all. It was so sloppy.

I just went back through the manga chapter of it, and yeah, it is a bit out of nowhere too, but it at least gets more than a single minute of time to explain it and show it off.

Boz also was shown several chapters before, tailing and the like; they didn't just materialize out of nowhere too.

Ryu really got shortchanged in this episode: "I'm Shaman too BTW"
"Cool"

Well that was a ride. Went from singing monks to Ren deciding to kill his father. Liked this episode tbh, but man I was so disappointed to hear Hao's voice, like seriously, I can get behind Yoh because it's somewhat close to his og one and kind of represents his character, but wtf is that VA choice for Hao??

Edit: Actually, went back to the OG one to listen to Hao's voice and was surprised to see that his voice was also girlish. Seems like I was wrong, they went with the same VA. Still would have been more hype if Hao had the VA of Itachi/Madara because that's the vibe he gives.

Ugh I hate how they dealt with Ryu becoming a shaman and having Tokageroh as his spirit ally. They just suddenly throw it out there with no proper explanation. At least they give my boy Ren enough screen time. Still, I'm really disappointed with this adaptation so far.
