THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
All I can say is, this episode definitely brought the enthusiasm of surfing to a standstill, at least for Masaki, encountering fear at first sight with Sho's sudden "departure" last episode, the waves bringing a wakeboard back to the coast and being a lingering haunting figure. Killed or not, the speculation is up to you.

As bad as I want to say this: finally, Masaki's heart is broken for once, breaking that happy-go-lucky personality with the dark overtones of the perils of surfing. Have been waiting to see his other side of the personality for good as I didn't like his happy, overflowing nature, for being stalemate genericness.

Sho's bidding farewell with all the bishounen surfers surfing in the wake of the night, they can only honor what Sho has done with his surfing calibre. What reckless behaviour, but it's all in communion for a mourning so tasteless as salty wounds.

Graduation for Masaki, and it's time to leave for high school outside of his hometown alone while Nalu makes his way to Hawaii. Of course, not forgetting his personal wakeboard.

Good luck, Corgi. A new adventure in Shounan awaits with the other surfers in tow. Continue this journey, because "the show must go on".

TBH, I MUST re-emphasize again (for the very last time), this would've been better left as the 3-part film as was originally made. Who the hell wanted a TV version conceived, because it's boring as heck.

@OokamiRisu @badabass
IKR, Masaki should've been replaced instead of Sho, the former's such a personality deadweight and honest to God, I already despised his character trait by Episode 2/3. Why this show let Sho go, it's nothing more than plot armour.

damn, so i guess sho actually did die, that sucks... the first half of this episode had pretty different tone and atmosphere; felt really sad and stuff :( wonder what happened with sho too, like why did he go surfing on that night and what was going on with him? we’ll probably never find out but it'd be nice if we could. don’t understand all the hate for this anime though, i really like the chill vibe and stuff. also, bad cgi was pretty noticeable in this ep especially. masaki’s sister is actually quite cute though ngl. excited to see what’s gonna happen next in shonan

I just hope they won't go "happy go lucky" till the end of the series.
I mean, they surely tried to emphasise the emotional state of Masaki, after he learnt that Shou basically took his life. Without making anything to at least suggest any reason for that, it would be terrible, makingg Shou a "main" character just to justify Masaki's change in attitude towards surfing. It'll be just too sad to do so, not to mention it being a really cheap move and thus making this episode much worse.
Although it was rushed, I really enjoyed the gesture of their newly made friends to help (mainly) Masaki and Tanaka overcome grieve and make a step forward.
I'm looking up to the next episodes but like I said, I'd be really disappointed if there won't be anything more about Shou's decision :/

Honestly, they killed best boy Shou off and didn't even let us properly feel the pain? What's the point? He died, like he's literally dead, what I wanted to see is at least one episode where everyone goes full depression. Seems like Masaki is the only one who cares tho. Ugly CG and horrible soundtrack also took every bit of drama away. Shou's death really was my last hope for this anime to rise, because it was so unexpected and suddenly opened so many ways for the story to progress, but the anime just can't go above average.

I have no closure, I feel like we needed to be there. What happened after Misaki saw sho's board??? I need to know, I feel like we can't get any closure now. I'm still waiting for Sho to pop out at any moment. Even after the whole episode they never actually said he died??? I feel like I'm just waiting in limbo, anyone else???????

I didn’t think they would kill him smh. I’m quite surprised I cried and had a knot in my throat for the first half of the episode. They made it so mysterious and didn’t even show his death so it wasn’t as sad as it could’ve been yet Masaki’s sadness still reached me. I did find it a little weird like others have said that Tanaka wasn’t sad but they weren’t specific on how much time had passed so I assume that was why since it wasn’t even a thing at school either. Masaki just took it the hardest and needed more time. I didn’t really like the pacing for this ep only bc it feels like they skipped over relevant parts we needed to see but I still enjoy the show and don’t get all the bad ratings. Also I haven’t seen much anime (to my knowledge) with CG elements so I can’t tell if it’s bad. Seems fine to me as a viewer with an untrained eye lol.

Well, that's a little out of left field, and kinda feels like we're left with some quite big holes quite intentionally. I dunno, I've never liked anime randomly taking such a sudden left turn, changing up its entire atmosphere in an abrupt manner like this, and I'm not sure I like it here, either. That said... just holes. I'm sure we'll learn more later on. Plus, it sure as sh×t did very well to draw us in to Masaki's ... depression< I suppose? The whole atmosphere was very much changed, and it could be felt in the flow of the story, the scenes, the repetition, even the quiet and the soundtrack. Brilliantly done. And then even the fast forward felt more like slow forward, time like molasses, and suddenly it's graduation which I'm always conflicted about - and then journey takes on a very real, very tangible form, together with arriving at the ocean once more. Brilliantly done again. A rollercoaster ride for sure, but the whole episode definitely kept us way up high.

Next week: Shounen Shounan Magic! :D

This is just super bad. They should've let Masaki death for real, and changed the mc to Nalu completely. Because i can't stand shit for Masaki and his way of mourness. Their surrounding were also didn't give a shit, tho. So, they even didn't give a proper justice to what the actual shit happened previously. Instead, 'hey, the surfing just took our precious friend away. So let it go and moving forward. Because the director didn't have much decent words to show a better way!'

Also, stop that Surfing Yappe! shit, man, its cringed me to death hearing that over and over again! Dang. If only there was no little sister and that tanning girl, here, idk how i can handle myself watching this kind of thing. Whatever. I hope the next will get a better direction....

Sorry to tell you that, but when you understand japanese, the way that they are talking about him, he's dead, not only gone or amnesiac. It's a charged past tense they used in there, so it's done.

Honestly, my average rating for anime is 9. I gave Gibiate a 7. But if they killed Sho like this and don't put any explaination to that, it's a straight 4 it gets ...

This episode is toying with my heart and my hope! Now I'm depressed. The reason I watch sports anime is it has fewer death rate than other genre, but still the risk is not zero, it's something I've to remind myself again and again.

Well yeah, the show was pretty average until now and that was kinda Masaki’s fault with his generic teenager personality. But with him now moving I really hope he matures, and I’m looking forward to get to know the two other boys.
I am gonna miss Tanaka tho!!

Btw, I don’t think Sho died. Remember at the beginning of episode one? Sho was in the crowd there, I was discussing this on another site as well, you can go re watch the first scene and confirm it for yourself. So, my theory is that someone rescued Sho, but he is scared and won’t surf or physically can’t surf anymore due to the accident, and goes to a competition to see if the other guys are there.

exactly what I was thinking- that scene where masaki says something like "watch me, sho!" and sho's in the crowd with sunglasses and not surfing gear really made me think he had to quit the sport for some reason when I first saw it, and now I have a teensy feeling that's what's going on.

of course, maybe none of this is true since this show has so many damn plotholes and the strangest pacing so maybe sho is actually dead for real :')

Honestly, I know this show definitely isn't the best in terms of story, characters, etc., but I was genuinely enjoying it. But last night's episode hit me so fucking hard to the point where I had to just stop watching and go to sleep crying. Like, it was just so out of left field and unexpected and really fucking depressing.

I want to hope they won't just throw his supposed suicide to the side and give us some kind of closure as to what exactly threw him off the edge...or better yet, even, have him be safe and sound but just given up surfing. Wishful thinking, but still.

EDIT: Yeah, no, looks like Sho is gone for good. The bloke watching Masaki at the tournament in the first episode was Sho's older brother. And honestly looking back on it, I think they made it clear enough that he died, even if it wasn't stated explicitly. And I seriously doubt they'd go to all that trouble to get the point across that he's gone only to pull some heartless "He survived, motherfucker!" afterwards. In the end, this is supposed to be a sports SOL, not Dragon Ball Z.

Sho is dead? That's really depressing. Masaki was destroyed inside because of it, to the point where he wanted to die, but Nalu saved him, and convinced him to continue surfing. Now, Masaki has decided to go to high school in Shonan, and Nalu is gone to Hawaii. Will we ever see Nalu again?

Also, part of me is hoping that Shou simply threw away his board, convincing everyone that he's dead, and is still out there somewhere.

Yes i agree with you! It's also possible that he had to quit surfing and leave Oarai because of his family. I really hope they fill these plot holes by the end of the show.

Nah, he's dead. The one in the beginning is Shō's brother (Kīroiushi), he looks exactly like Shō but have dif board and wetsuit also have reversed hair (longer strands on the left while Shō's have longer strands on the right)

Well to begin with i dont know how i feel about this ep. I just feel like there is something up like I dont think they would just kill Sho like that. Sho was an important character and we still didnt get the chance to know him and discover what was up with him and his family. There were still things left to see. So i believe that he isnt actually dead. Maybe he moved away? or was forced to move away? iThey just made his death seem so pointless idk how to describe it it was not enough for such a character. I hope that he is alive cause if they actually killed him off like that then in my opinion it kinda sucks.

This episode caught me totally off guard, I would never wait for Sho's death and I think it was a courageous decision, but it also opens doors to many possibilities. Maybe it was due to lack of time, but I think the question of whether Masaki should continue surfing after the death of the one who motivated him should have taken longer to be answered for me to see the character's growth and it didn't look like just a flash. I was going to drop this anime, but this episode made me very curious. I want to see how everyone will apply "the show must go on".

totally agree with you.
Things just got a dark turn all of a sudden, but it was kinda 'too short for this kind of drama' .
I hope we can learn what the problem was with Sho and his life in the next eps.
Man...blondie just suddenly left and everyone just got over it like that?

This was such a heavy episode. I didn’t expect it. When the episode started the tone & everything was so off, I was wondering why Masaki was so affected, I had thought that Sho just moved away or disappeared or something. They really executed his downward spiral really well, it left such a heavy, relatable feeling in me.

but i’ll probably remember over and over again

I told myself if Sho died I was not gonna watch this.

Nalu is my fave, but Sho was the only character who gave this show any real depth. Every other character is hard to connect to and seems overly happy and superficial.

I felt something was off with Sho from the very beginning, and after not seeing him surfing in the 1st episode, I figured he either died or was badly injured.

I was not looking for or interested to watch 13 episodes of grieving. I literally Googled Wave's fandom page to check if Sho died so I wouldn't get invested and watch this. They freaking listed this man as ALIVE!!! Even though he's obviously dead.

I got about half way through this episode thinking I might stick it out since I was a little bit invested.

But THEN, I lost it when everyone suddenly showed to give Sho a memorial when for all we know they had only met this man ONCE in a competition. Like, who has time to drop what they are doing to travel to an impromptu late night vigil for a guy they were only shown to have met once!! Even the billionaire guy was there!! Like...seriously?

I already felt weird in that last episode where everyone was acting buddy buddy and promising each other to go to the World Competition together like they were best friends and they had literally just met. Kosuke hadn't even spoken to a single person on camera up to that point.

So yeah...it made it hard to take anything seriously. Sho's death or whatever friendship or bond the show was trying to convince us they have.

This show ain't for me.
