THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
A man failed doing gymnastic. Not sure if he's optimistic or too air-headed, though. His coach told him to retire (or rather, he's been telling him to). He has a daughter who is into ninja, it seems. She thinks gymnastic is like ninja (so her father is sort of like ninja).

Ninja show w. MiB? The performer seems to caught an eye on the main guy and followed them back home!! Oh, the MiB is not part of the show. He was targetted to bring back to his country. He's going to stay w. them.

Then the training. The ninja actor also followed them there and showed his skill.

He's been wanting to tell his daughter about his retirement, but got disrupted by ninja actor. She seems to sense what he's been wanting to say?

Main guy decided not to get retired thinking about his dead wife and daughter.

Rap song (?) for OP aired as ED. "Shanghai Honey (上海ハニー)" by Joutarou Aragaki (CV: Daisuke Namikawa), Leonardo (CV: Kensho Ono), Tetsuo Minamino (CV: Yuki Kaji)

Edit: It's cover song of ORANGE RANGE's song

Cool episode and it has serious vibe in terms of competitive storytelling and comedy. We got Joutarou Aragaki introduced from the first episode and he seems like a pretty normal guy. There's also a bird introduced, which turned out to be way bigger than I had thought!

Tomoyo is pretty cute, fun to watch her interact with others. Seems they're going slow with the anime so far by just introducing the cast and some concepts. The part with the samurai skills display caught my attention. The theme is also pretty catchy imo.

Another great premiere, damn. So many good shows this season.

I really like the setting with the Joutarou on the verge of retiring due to previous injuries, struggling to find traction in competitions after his incidents and tries to move on. However, the passion of his own daughter saying that she like watching him perform stopped him. The press conference was a very well directed scene with Joutaro declaring that he wasn't going to retire at the very last second after remembering his family. Gymnastics is a pretty unique premise that I haven't seen in anime before, so very interested in it.

The ninja guy is hilarious and it sounds like he has some history with Jootarou even though the latter has forgotten about it. All of his scene were great though, I can't believe this guy has some real ninja skills. Curious to see what kind of role he'll play in the story but judging from the ED, is he going to be a competitor for Joutarou?

Goes without saying that Rei is an absolute delight.
Also, big thumbs up for the bird, I don't know who's idea it was to have an exotic talking bird, but mega props to whoever that guy was.

that was totally bizarre.

the bird was the worst part of the episode. I'm utterly convinced it's a human shapeshifter trapped in bird form or something.

this seems pretty obviously to be a Yuri on Ice clone - main character on the verge of retirement, foreigner who arrives out of nowhere (as a total fanboy weeb) to inspire the main character and revitalize their love/passion for a sport, younger rival character (purple guy in OP) who will be obnoxious about the older generation needing to move on and likely will also inspire the main character as well.

Okay, this was certainly more bizarre than I imagined it'd be but I enjoyed it. What's the deal with the bird though xD?

I see some resemblance to Yuri on Ice!! for the points @tailor31415 pointed out. I don't think this'll turn out to be as successful as the former but here's to hoping this won't go unnoticed.

MAPPA again, I really hope they don't start to implode one day. Animation for the episode was fairly good, I felt.

Final scene right before the ED when the Taisou Zamurai decided to not retire after all was touching. The daughter is a real sweetheart as well.

Not really feeling for the foreigner yet but the ED hints a triple-team or something along those lines so hopefully they'll manage to get me invested in the trio soon. Damn, the Grandma though lol.

Pretty cool rap song for the Op, by the way.

Watching this remind me of my own taste paradox

I love DILF but I hate the fact that he has to had sex with woman in order to become DILF.

A divorced or widower character (like this anime) relieves some problem but the paradox still existed.

PS: The anime set in 2002 so there's very high chance we'll see time-skip ending at 2020-2021, like his daughter also become a gymnast or something.

This was a lot more silly than I had expected, I thought it was a serious sports anime that's not a nekketsu for once since the pv made it looked like it was the case but I was totally wrong. Dropping it.

Get the hint Joutarou xD

This was a pretty great with a lot to like, whether it was the comedy or the mildly dramatic sequences. Overall a promising package. A bit unorthodox, but in a good way. Don't think I've seen anything quite like this before and imo the dark horse of the season.

Well that was quite....interesting. Not entirely sure what to expect from this one going forward but just from the premiere, it seems like it'll be wacky and fun. And just like the other MAPPA show from this season, Jujutsu Kaisen, this one also has a very colorful and stylish ED (unless that was the OP used as the ED). This is pretty decent so far.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

I haven't watched that many sports anime tbh but this was okay. I wonder what Joutarou next steps will be. Will he be able to continue being a gymnast? Highly likely but it's still something I'm looking forward to.

The way the story is going looks like Joutarou never retire lol.

The animation from the ninja doing all his tricks was great, I loved it. Bird was nice and fat and eats like a monster.

Well I'm gonna see how long Joutarou will last until he retires........might be never......will see

I didn't expect this to be so silly, but I like it so far XD Ngl, I teared up when Rei was watching the conference with a serious face, she knew all along about him planning to retire, even if Joutarou wasn't able to tell her. But yeah, other than that, it was mostly just funny and random :') That OP though, I'm so shocked at how comedic it is LOL

I kinda regret watching this while slightly buzzed on booze, because i'm not sure wtf I just watched. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very good either. "bizarre" is the best way I would describe it.

from the PVs, I thought this would be a serious sports drama, but no? It stayed pretty comedic the entire time?

Don't really like the mc. He's almost 30 years old, but he's a total airhead with the mentality of a teenage boy. Yet he did have a few serious moments here an there. It was just so jarring. The other secondary characters are really immature too? from the PVs, I thought that Leo kid was going to be some sort of prodigy gymnast? Maybe that'll still be the case, but his personality was overall really obnoxious. Same goes with that green-haired guy who rapped as he talked???

The talking giant bird is so cringey, WHY DOES IT EXIST. It adds nothing of value. Also, how would this child be that familiar with the Matrix movies lore??? The first Matrix movie would have technically existed in this world, with it being set in 2002(sequel didn't come out until 2003), yet that was a rated R movie??? did this child see this movie to understand all the references??? asdfgjakggfagfh...

the animation was pretty bad. Gave me war flash backs to OPM s2. To watch this after watching Jujutsu Kaisen is a big "yikes". This had sooo many still frames, flappy mouths for dialogue, characters going off model all the time. I expect they'll rely heavily on the CG for the gymnastic action sequences, which also looked pretty bad.

Will at least try to watch a couple more eps before deciding whether or not to drop it. But so far I'm just confused and not really impressed.

Being honest, I don’t know how I feel about this show. I like the whole family aspect, though it feels like they are trying to be serious, but comes out a little forced. Then on top of that they add some comedy. I’m going to be optimistic about this one, mainly because I like the art style though. I don’t know if that was the op or ed, but it was pretty catchy.

That was enjoyable. The animation is average but the story and characters are really refreshing.

To me this anime is like “when you blend Yuri on Ice and Kakushigoto together”

Looking at the trailer I thought Joutaro would be the serious type but he's quite silly actually and Rei is so cute.

That's some stylish grandma ๏_๏

That talking parrot makes it more funny XD

When the Ninja was showing his skills, that was great.

I aggree with this. Even though i think, the art and animation were just their style to stay with its eccentricsm. Seriously, its really brought back a nostalgic vibes to me with the two of it. I just hope its had the same calibre of them too, especially with Kakushigoto. XD

Still, i don't even know the deal of that Ninja. But soon the plot might come up to told him too. Was he really a real ninja from an unknown country, or he was a gymnast too? Whats his role there? Idk. So far its an okay introduction, even my expectations is still low due to my lack of understanding. Lets see next, then.

Not having seen the tags, synopsis or anything before watching this episode, I was really hoping this would be an anime about a man reluctantly giving up his career in gymnastics, in which he has no future, in order to focus on his family. As such, the ninja's very presence, especially the interuptions, were supremely annoying; I loved to see the times when MC finally gathered the resolve to speak with his daughter. I suppose I should have gotten the hint then, but I was hoping against all odds that he would go through with the retirement until the dramatic pause at the end. As such, this episode was little more than immense disappointment for me (despite the quality and the good parts), though I brought that on myself, I guess.

And a story about a widower who has left his dream career, with little other skills, struggling to support his family while trying to be a good father could be so interesting...

I see a lot of sports anime has been emerging lately and I'm all for it.
As for the first episode, the episode was pretty good. Jotaro, a gymnast who wants to retire but can't since his daughter likes watching him do gymnastics.
The ep had a little bit of comedy and serious moments. I'm looking forward to this anime.

The first episode left a good impression on me with the mc’s stance on his passion and the reason for it during the press conference to announce his retirement. For myself in comparison, Kakushigoto when it comes to father-daughter dynamics is recent timeline-wise. So having watched this episode and noting how much of a pinnacle role the daughter might have, seeing how insightful she was at the end there, whereas in kaku the daughter is unaware obviously of her father’s work, makes me think that this potentially will be a roller coaster ride of emotions where all the characters come to be involved.
The secret agents chasing after the foreigner ninja to “deport him” leaves much to be assumed so I’m anticipating the introduction to new characters and how they’ll tie into the home life of Shoutarou Aragaki. Taisou Zamurai will probably grow on me with the indulgence on any sentimental scenes. Overall I look forward to where this anime takes us.

Damn, seeing that the mom has passed made me sad. Rei is awesome, what a bundle of sunshine and Leonardo is hilarious.

Ora ora Jotaro is also a great MC, "I will retire not" "Eh?"

And finally that OP was wacky as fuck, it's amazing. Well, let's see where this show goes so far it's really interesting.
