I want to decide if i include this series in my PTW.

I've seen some ok reviews, and people praising the soundtrack. I would understand a 7.00 as many good series that don't please the crowds.

But come on!? Below 6? Is it worse than Terraformars?

- Horrible, beyond terrible CGI?
- Lack of any story or plot?
- uninspired porn desguised as anime?

I'm baffled too. People seem to not like the story and the dialog or something. But it's just completely out of my own ability to comprehend due to how perfect the show is for me.

I think part of it might be the references are going way over people's heads, I do see some complaints about that, with some of the conversations being conducted almost entirely in song lyric references, it can make people think it sounds off. But holy crap it's a wonderful thing for someone like me. So I guess that's the issue, it's really a Music Mega Nerd's sort of thing. And I can look past all the issues other have.

Beyond that? Yeah, not a clue. Even the episodes with references I didn't get (2, namely. And a bit about the most recent since I'm not a huge Prince fan enough to have caught everything) I still enjoyed. And as we finished episode 5 the story is coming together too.

My guess it was most due expectations. When you watch the PV and see the scenes and seiyuu cast, it gives off vibes like a Carole & Tuesday production with Eureka 7/FLCL mixed for action.
And the first episodes are really disappointing if you had hopes this would be one of the best shows of the season.
Now that there are more episodes and they are focusing more on references, I expect the score to raise above 6 and it might arrive 6.5 if the later half is good.

They could've done better CG. Fights so far are the worst part so far. And starting with less obvious music reference wasn't good either. If episode 2 used something like the characters from 4 and 5, more people would catch the references more easily and enjoy it better. When C&T was airing, a lot of more casual watchers were enjoying spot Vitas and other well known singers, some share and it contributes spreading word about the show.

For me, so far, it's acceptable. Not something I'd be missing otherwise, but I enjoy it enough to not even think dropping it and I have hopes for the later half.

To be fair, this show is better than Carole & Tuesday for now in pretty much every aspect, so I'm baffled too. I mean, it's far from perfect but it's at least interesting with kinda out-of-the-ordinary characters, nice references, visually pleasing and the BGM is awesome so I don't really know why the community score is so low. It's literally one of the only two shows that I would consider watchable this season, along with Tower of God.

Eureka 7 is the better work of this writer and the average to poor animation quality of this compared to Eureka 7 is not helping too

While the show's concept is interesting, I have to say it's execution is poor.

The show as a whole is poorly paced. Given the shows episodic nature, with a different setting and unique characters per episode, there is just not enough time in each episode for world building, character development, and moving the main plot forward. As a result all three suffer, leaving the show with a weak plot both episodically and as a whole.

The referential nature of the show is also heavy handed. The constant lyric, song, and album references come off as forced and are often cringe inducing, like a bad title drop, only occurring multiple times per episode. Because of their frequency, the show's dialog suffers since it does not sound like natural speach.

It also doesn't help that Funimation's translation does not stick to the actual song lyrics, with the translated lines being just slightly off. Though this is likely an attempt to avoid any possible copyright issues.

But whatever. This show is about the music right? I can forgive a bad plot and poor pacing. I can forgive bad dialog. I can even forgive loli Kurt Cobain having a hole in her head and pointing finger guns to her head in that episodes ED. So long as the music is good, right?

Bad news.

Ok, maybe not that bad. The music is okay. Each episode covers a different genre, with music in that genre being used as the theme for that episode's characters and mech battle. My problem with the music is that it is very much background music. The new music is easily missed if you are not listening for it. A little bit of battle choreography would have probably helped here. But as it stands, the music is never really brought to the foreground or made to stand out in any way. A failure for a music anime.

I should also mention that each episode has a unique ED comprised of a mini music video of that episode's plot. I feel that the songs written for these EDs are a bit too generic and sometimes miss the mark on capturing that episode's featured genre. The EDs for the shoegaze and grunge episodes especially stick out in that regard for me, with both songs sounding a bit more poppy than music in their respective genres.

Wow, I wrote a lot more than I expected to on this show. Sorry for the text wall, but I did just finish binging the first 5 episodes, and I guess I just had a few things to say.

Tl;dr good concept, decent music, poor execution.

I'll probably stick with the show for a few more weeks. The concept is interesting enough, and I'm hoping it gets better. Honestly, if I stop watching it'll probably be because of all of the cringy references. All of you enjoying the show, keep on enjoying it. That's just like my opinion man.

It's not great but definitely not so bad that it should be this low. I personally don't get most of the references, but I at least enjoy the characters. I can't deny I was a bit disappointed tho, I was expecting something with singing being a part of the combat like Macross 7 or Symphogear.

Seems like a lot of stuff this season has been getting a lot of flak, idk if everyone's cranky cuz of quarantine or something, but if you look at the seasonal list there's a lot more stuff in the 5 range than usual.

That is the point, most of what is being said here make sense for a 7.00 rated show, not a 5.00.

For exemple:

A typical very low rated show is like:

BAD concept, BAD music, TERRIBLE execution.

Must be something more especific... What, there is an ending that is romanticizing suicide?

Well, i guess that comment found out something:

Sell itself as a typical genre anime and fool the audience is something that must cause this effect.

Think a shounen show as MHA where it turns in terror anime after some point?

A shoujo where the romance is left aside to give place for a "nakama"?

A sport anime that sudden just focus on a police thriller?

Ah, a musical anime that fails with the music? yes sir, that makes sense.

Know what, thanks guys, i'll watch this show, even if the reason is for figure out what is happening about the score, to understand a bit more how the mind of western anime fans crownds works.

It is a more interesting reason than most of random shows i am following anyway.

I could give a 7 so far. Imo the main reason is the story development. It's too random and until episode 03 there was no clue of what was going on or why they decided to travel. They just did it.

I'm enjoying most of the characters to be honest, also the music references, but still not that good to go further than a 8.

Gotta watch the next episodes for a better conclusion.

Maybe you need more than pop-rock culture references to do a good show, is quite cringe when they make a joke or mention about some famous band or artist... And those Mecha thing are awful, i don't get the point of this series.

It could have worked as a musical anime, but I think it's easier to make empty references.

As has been pointed out, the series sounds interesting in concept, but in execution it’s nothing more than a wank-fest to creator Jin’s favorite bands with tedious references and in-jokes (that aren’t even “jokes”) crammed in at every opportunity, which results in a superficial plot & poor character development 😑

Now we are getting into the nitty-gritty of the problem with scoring systems in general. It is hard (if not impossible) to assign an objective numerical score to a subjective opinion. Not everyone is going to agree on what the score should be.

Making the problem worse, with the 10-point scoring system at least, is determining what score should be considered average. Should 7 be considered average, like it is with high school grading, or should 5 be?

If you asked me to score this show I would say it's a below average show, so a 6 out of 10 if we consider 7 to be average. That's roughly equivalent to the show's current score of 5.83, so to me the show's score is pretty spot on.

With 5 as the average, I'd rate the show a 4 out of 10. So, in that case I would say the current score is too high ;p

In a individual perspective yes, but we are talking about mass behavior.

Most of people give easy 10s for most of series that pleases them, and so on. 5 is very low.

And a MAPPA anime has to a tremendous fail to delight the crowds less than Olympia Kyklos:

My guess is that the primary culprit is the bad CG battles. Three of the four shows rated under a 6 this season all share having repeated use of blatantly-obvious bad CG in common. Shachibato is the only outlier on that<6 list, but that show deserves it because it's boring as tar.

(It probably also doesn't help that this show's dialog is so full of music references that it's hard to tell what the plot is a lot of the time.)

I don't think the anime is that bad at the moment (I've just finished ep 5). So far, I think it's ok. But I do understand some people's complaints. The dialogues and the pace is not really good. I do have the impression that sometimes they create random dialogues just to say the name of a popular rock song. The CG does not bother me, but as a mecha fan, I'm frustrated because the robots barely appear in some episodes. Maybe It's my fault because I was expecting something as good as Gundam.

I wonder, people are just harsh.
I like to post in manga forum when I feel it is worth it, so people will think. "Shit, is her again" or something.

People asked me where I read certain thing but the rules say no telling where did you read so maybe I am too boring for not saying? Or salty because you didn't check my profile that says don't ask because I hate people to ghost me after that. I love learning languages so maybe I did not read the manga in English.

I dropped it after only the first couple episodes and I really didn’t like it. It was my most anticipated non-sequel of the season yet it ended up being so lame. I don’t know how to describe the episodes I saw part from boring af. Imo the characters really let the first couple episodes down, they feel really bland and lacklustre. From the sounds of it I don’t think it’s improved that much from where I dropped it so I don’t see a reason to pick it up again.

It's finally over.

I wanted to drop it after the 2nd episode.

While I get the idea what they were trying to convey, the execution of the anime was pretty crappy.

It was neither magic, nor logic, nor science, it was just all a bunch of random shit slap in together, they didn't even care to explain how any of that non-sense makes sense.

In comparison Eureka Seven, witch was very similar both in theme and Art type, they actually makes thing logical, and cared to explain the science properly.

Here in Listeners they tried too much to make it similar to Heavy Metal (old Rock & Roll music movie from the 80s) without caring if things made sense or not.

I'm a huge fan of Jin and loved the Evangelion-alike plot, but the direction of the show was a little bit messy. I couldn't go past episode 3 or 4.

I think sometimes saying less is better, the main character seemed so eager to tell EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING that happened on screen.

I did love the musical references and I wouldn't call it a bad show, just not my type.

Director / Writer / Producers: This show will be a tremendous success! Look at it: ROCK'N ROLL + MECHAS + PRETTY GIRL! The rebel son from the marriage of the COOL and the HYPE!

Someone: And a plot. This series is going to reunite all that under a plot... right?

Director / Writer / Producers: WHAT DID YOU SAY?! I'M NOT EVEN LISTENING! WOOHOOOO!

That's it.

It's mostly the execution that makes this show so horrible.

It's story could be something interesting, but the major problem is the presentation and direction.

The dialogues are off and meaningless, the characters are flat. The story development feels rushed and awkward.

I'm not concerned about CGI or the quality of the graphics. But I'm quite confused about this story line which is like being cut into pieces. That's all, I think the 8/10 rating for listeners and for the opening is very good 😎
