I don't know what to think of this. I think the first 15 min was a bit dull and the animation a bit too mechanical, but then you got carried away with the storyline... It was quite good I think, simplistic overall but psychologically complex, that is if we want to see it this way. I think the story could have turned out a bit better though...

Same feeling here. At first it was dull but once you get into it it becomes amazing. The story is great and raises some interesting questions that you don't see in anime very often. About the mechanical animation, the producer didn't have the necessary equipment to do fluid movement so he solved this problem with a "story" movement : he made the movie about android dolls, who are SUPPOSED to be jerky in their movements. For the “human” scenes, they used cell animation as highlights - this makes for a striking difference in the animation.

Overall, despite some plot holes and maybe some graphical issues, this anime is amazing. It became on of my favourite.

the animation is stiff because the creator wanted to mimic stop-motion effect because he was inspired by Czechoslovakian stop-motion animation of dolls

Interesting to know that Malice was Konaka's first time creating a doll. I actually thought it'd started several years prior to that

Loved it but if it was really some stop motion using dolls and clay instead of CGI pretending to be stop motion this would have been truly great, the works of Fred Stuhr comes to mind (Sober, Ratamahata)

I don't know what I just watched but I kinda fuck with it. I'm a real big fan of the crude CG honestly, might not be technically impressive by today's standards but something about the awkward motions and the voice acting in the dub (got a weird torrent and couldn't figure out how to watch it subbed) really added to it.

It wasn't impressive by 2001 standards either but that contributes to the creepiness in a way. Reminds me all the unintentionally creepy early PS1 FMVs.
