Oddly enough, I've only recently gotten into manga. :P
I consider myself a connoisseur of anime or a critic in some capacity, though I have a long way to go.
The ultimately defining factor which I use to judge an anime title (or any piece of art) is it's Heart.
True enough, my opinions and views may differ from yours, so don't take my word as fact at first glance.
My top 5 anime are what I enjoy re-watching the most (despite their flaws) because of their deep feelings, themes, emotional intelligence, and appropriate execution.
