What I’m guessing he meant from this is that they planned to preair a worse version for some reason.
I can't fathom why they'd do that.

I can’t either. It makes no sense.

The art and animation is decent on the aired version.

But some character face is still way off/weird and stiff.

Some scene have really weird colour pallets, it almost looks like it was from hentai anime.

I think they messed up with the layers: They put the image of the chair in front of the image of Kotori

Well, the massive downgrade in art and animation compared to the first two seasons will probably take another couple of episodes to fully adjust to, but it's nowhere near as bad as it could have been, at least (though some characters already being off-model at times isn't overly reassuring). Other than that, this felt a little rushed to me: the casual harem hijinks, then straight into meeting Natsumi, then straight into her impersonating Shido and then straight into her letter (without much of a transition between that and the previous scene where Origami and Tohka saw straight through her).

That aside, this was an entertaining start to this 3rd season. Natsumi is an interesting new Spirit and once again wildly different in powers and personalities to the rest (it always impresses me how unique they've been able to make each Spirit so far, at least in relation to each other), though I'm not sure what she's pissed at Shido for (something to do with when she briefly glowed after the last AST missile explosion, I suppose). I'm interested to see how Shido goes about resolving this one.

Alright, ladies and gentlemen, here it is: the third season of Date A Live. I've been waiting for this season a long time and finally watching it feels like a dream come true. Like any other first episode in a TV series, this episode is mostly set-up that the narrative will develop in future episodes. Shido has his first confrontation with Natsumi, voiced by newcoming actress Ayumi Mano. While I wasn't expecting the role of Natsumi would be given to a newcomer, I'm glad to see Ayumi does a great job with Natsumi's adult self. We'll see how she fares when Natsumi's child self appears on-screen.

Later, we move to a clichéd impersonator scenario, where Natsumi assumes Shido's appearance and starts causing trouble at his school. The way Tohka and Origami spot the real Shido is so absurd, even Natsumi is weirded out. Unfortunately, this isn't the end of Shido's troubles, as Natsumi makes a tactical withdrawal and promises to keep harassing Shido from now on.

I've also noticed a small cameo for Mayuri at the beginning of the episode. Does that mean the movie is canon? Well, at least it can be canon for the anime continuity. Maybe Mayuri will have a role to play in future episodes.

There was a fear that the reduced animation values would somehow detract from the experience, but I'm glad to say that rarely happens. Sure, the animation quality drops a noticeable bit in the school scenes, but it corrects itself once there are less than three characters on-screen. Admittedly, I find the new animation gives the show a charmingly "retro" style that sets it apart from modern anime productions, which make heavy use of vector, digital and CGI animation.

Date A Live will stand or fall by the strength of its characters and narrative. I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again. The series is supposed to make us forget about the man behind the curtain and make us feel as if the characters are living, breathing people with flaws and humanity. I don't need Date A Live to be a life-changing experience, I just need it to be a good story. This episode wasn't great but it was good enough. Hopefully, the show will keep up the momentum and deliver a satisfying outcome. Definitely a keeper for this season!

After the trailer i thought that it looked really bad, but this was much better than i expected. Still the first 10 minutes wasn't feeling it at all, just felt weird. Then Natsumi's appearance changed the episode pretty much. Still it is decent (at best) and i feel like the story might feel a bit outdated, this joke about food is pretty much ancient at this point. Most likely will watch the whole season and hope that will be able finish this series one day (if it has an ending).

I hope it's not gonna be one episode for each girl lol. An arc like this should be 2 episodes tops and then move onto more interesting stuff. Animation was a lot better then the screenshots I've seen up to now.

This season adapts two arcs so no, it won't be the whole season but it was at this point in the novels that the arcs started getting longer.

I swear they cranked the degen level up to 11 for this. They should've just kept it at a comfortable 8 on the degen scale like with the past seasons excluding the OVAs.

I don't think it's a good thing that I liked the movie more than this first episode. As far as I know the movie wasn't even canon.

Also the animation is still trash. It's better than the slideshow that was Shokugeki, but this does not make me excited for how they're going to animate OPM.

I am not following the novels so this had a pretty interesting start imo, new opening is good too (sweet ARMS did it again yey! definitely got hit by some nostalgia because of it lol) To be honest I never thought they would give this another season after the shitfest that the second one ended up with focusing mostly on Miku...

I am not mad, just disappointed..

In all honesty, I love seeing all the girls back (just gotta wait a bit more for Kurumi). Sound is still as good as I hoped it to be... just that art-style man :(

Ok,the art styles a bit different, but who cares,it's back, and as long as they keep the humour and storys good, thats all that matters to me.Yeah, they all look a little different, but good god,how long is it since the last series/movie?
As long as Kurumi still messes with Shidou, thats all good.
For me,it still ranks as one of the best harem animes.
Not too sure about the ED though, but it'll probably grow on me,and Natsumi is waifu material.

Wished we get to see 'what if' scenarios and him choosing the boob fondle option.

If this is going to be the conflict of this arc, it feels a bit silly, even for this series.

Anyways, was really worried JC would fuck everything over, which appears to be the case for the pre-air but whatever version I watched seemed fine. Thankfully it looks a lot better than expected, albeit just being pretty average but I'd rather have consistent average than the crap they turned Index III into. Let's hope it manages to stay consistent.

Complaints about animation aside...

Did anyone catch what Natsumi is mad about?

They completely lost me. Did I miss like a millisecond frame of a nip slip or something? All I saw was her sneeze, flash and then return to normal. Is it supposed to be a mystery that's revealed once Shido gets to her?

That is what I think most people are missing out, sure I paused at some scenes and damm god... but if you dont pause and just chill, it is very much watchable, PLUS as a LN fan, they are doing a decent job so far, and that is what matters the most, the rest will be fixed on BDs.

Just CHILL OUT GUYS!

Finally seeing this animated was great, it is was fun to see Miku messing around with others, and even old Kotori is back, besides lets not forget Touka and Origami adoration to Shirou, to the point they were easy able to figure out the real one~~

Yeah the animation/art got nothing on Season 1/2 or the movie, but it's still decent, and it's still fun to watch because of the script so i can live with the artstyle looking less apealing for Season 3.
lol the Food of DOOM actually turned out to be good, thought Shido would just survive it because of Efreets healing power.
Nice to see Origami out of the hospital and back at her Shido stalking Duty again
Yuzuru using her sister as mea..- Kaguya-shield

Natsumi is very interesting so far, gotta love how she tried to impersonate Shido and cause a lot of trouble for him because she thought he got aware of her secret, also love her looks and Astral-Dress, Bodysuit is Live
Also love how Tohka and Origami were able to spot the difference between Shido and Natsumi, especially Origami with her analysis noticing Natsumi blinks faster by "50 milliseconds" and spotting the divergence of Natsumi's center of gravity by "0.2°"

Well, I've finally watched it and it looks fine. Obviously there are still things that need to be improved like some faces, etc.....and it's just me or Kaguya's boobs look smaller?

Anyway, Date a Live came back and I'm very happy, it was a very funny episode with the same harem comedy that I liked from previous seasons. Tohka asking Miku to come back to the TV, the dynamic of the twins, Miku being "lovely", Yoshino's cuteness, Kotori suddenly changing ribbons and Origami being Origami.....Origami is fucking great xD.

Natsumi, first appearance in the series and I already love her, her design and personality are great. Although she seems to be using a different appearance from her original because she doesn't like it and I suppose she showed it for a moment when she sneezed and thinks Shido saw it.... let's see how this plot develops and who the impostor is.

I also liked how Origami and Tohka instantly recognized the false Shido, although their reasoning was a little strange, Origami's one especially.

So yeah, very excited about what's to come and I really hope it maintains a decent visual quality.
