You sure you didn't just download the 480p torrent?
The show looks fine to me.
The entire series is basically in 480p even if you download the 1080 encodes, you can go ahead and compare with the screenshots here, the lines are extremely blured and the show is very likley been upscaled from a lower resolution to get a retro feel.

U know those animes had remasters right, thats like stating studio ghibli old films look better in dvd than blue ray.

This has nothing to do with quality as everyone knows an insane amount of work went into this, however, does not really excuse the bad looking upscale version we are getting.

Yeah, it's truly a shame that it's so low-res, especially since the linework looks so detailed otherwise.

I seriously don't understand why they didn't just make it full HD, for nostalgic reasons I'd understand but for youngins like me, I love a clean and HD animation prod.

As somebody who grew up with 80s & 90s anime and who is a big fan of CEL animation, this is a disgrace to that era of animation. We have BluRay releases of vintage shows for a reason, and that's because the art was so incredible back then that it's nice to see them remastered.
Nostalgia totally isn't an excuse for Megalo Box's production company fucking up the post-processing so terribly. Like others have said, I'm worried they're doing this to drive BluRay sales, and if that's the case, I worry about the future of TV anime.

Like, if that's the case, what next? Just air a show with a giant mosaic over the whole image?
"uh uh uh, you gotta buy the BluRay to truly watch the episode"

Okay, maybe that's a little overblown, but still! If they're willing to handicap a broadcast episode like this, what else would they be willing to chop off of the broadcast version to push them BDs?

I agree, it makes me wanna wait for the BD version before watching it because i kinda know the encoding..... will be much better.

Like comparing jojo bizzare tv vs BD literally so different

sakugablog have proof that its artistic choice by the anime staff here

The blurry elephant in the room is of course their unique approach to the composite, which has proven to be both controversial and a source of misunderstandings. Ever since the early stages of the project, director Moriyama simply couldn’t envision a series like this with the crisp visuals you’d get in a new anime nowadays; sure he could ask the team to make the linework thicker than usual, but to get a result reminiscent of the cel era he barely was a part of but that he loves nonetheless, they needed something more substantial. And as he admits, the answer they arrived to was intentionally roughening up the visuals, not really to go along with the gritty art direction as has been speculated, but explicitly to make it feel like an old production. Since Moriyama thought that simply overlaying a bunch of grain effects on it would be harsh on the eye, they also intentionally downscaled the footage and then upscaled it back – hence why many people have gotten the feeling that it feels like SD material, which it technically is despite the assets originally being produced as if it were a regular high-definition title.

Yep I downloaded the 1st episode when it aired to see how it looks like and noticed that weird quality. And it baffles me when people say they like it cause it looks like older anime, and then mention shows with awesome remasters as examples. Wtf, are you guys really watching such poor quality releases in the era of bluray remasters? (unless you watched them earlier.. but still..wtf) Like the op said, even Ashita no Joe looks better than this thing. Gonna wait for the bluray, I hope they'll include the normal version for people who don't want the muh retro style.

The Nipponjins are already doing this to music videos (I see it sometimes in the newest jrock releases - they put a mosaic one on the official youtube and you need to buy cd to get a version without mosaic, it sometimes leaks later anyway but they take it down), I really hope it's not the case here :/

Weird, maybe I’m blind but I’ve been watching it on crunchyroll (full quality) and haven’t noticed any problem with the resolution, maybe just a tad softer than normal. No funny antialiasing or anything, although it probably helps that I’m watching it on my 4” mobile screen. Still, it doesn’t look anywhere near as bad as those screenshots the OP posted. I think it may be down to where you streaming it from, because I know that a sizeable chunk of viewers will be getting their anime from other sources...

The animation is still good, though I agree, the upscaling is just kinda bothersome. The artstyle and drawn style is already enough to give it that old school feel for me, this is just unnecessary. Still doesn't mean I'm not having a good time, but hopefully, maybe they release it one day without the blurriness.

That's such a laughably misguided attempt at invoking a "retro feel", it makes me question the intelligence of the people who made this. And also the age of the people who actually defend this, as it seems they only know SD shows from watching it on HD screens. The blurry mess that results in it initially even gave me an aversion to HD TVs. Needless to say, that's not how those old shows originally looked like, when seen on a SD TV.

As such, what's supposed to be invoke nostalgic feelings actually partially prevents that from happening. It reminds me of watching old anime today (on the TV I have now), not of watching them 17-18 years ago.

Yeah, honestly I think it is quite a poor choice. They made a show that already looks dated. And not in a good way. The art style is perfectly fine but way to kill my eyes while watching it. Even older shows with worse resolution look better to me. Creating fake HD on purpose seems super counter-intuitive.

Were you born a moron or have you perfected being one in your lifetime? Since you are a moron I assume it's normal that you imagine someone saying "don't say anything about it!" or anything related to " natural censorship mindset" . Then again only morons watch something they don't like and then come to bitch about it. I suppose it comes with the territory.

If it actually matters to anyone, it doesn't look bad/blurry because of the artstyle, the anime is being released at 720x405, 405p, that's 3.5 times lower than 720p or 5.3 times lower than 1080p. If that's fine to you that's ok, if you like the animation that's great too, but it is blurry and low res, that's a fact.

It's made on purpose. They basically animate it in HD, re-size it to 360p (quality of the 80s) and then re-size it again to HD to give it a feel of old anime.
I know I read that somewhere in a news about the anime.
I don't mine. I actually kind of like it.

I'm fine with it; it definitely does add up to the anime's ambience. I'm already used to seeing shit tier animation so this really doesn't distract me. I can see why people wouldn't like it, but I think it meshes pretty well imo. Although I think they should give an option to watch it on a higher resolution without the changes made

Personally, I think the animation style suits well with the atmosphere of the anime. At a certain degree it's more "badass" (overstatement). It's a subjective concept.

Anyways, watch the anime in 720p. I recommend downloading IDM, then downloading from OpenLoad servers.
