This show's overall aesthetic of late-Edo period Japan with western elements mixed in is just so refreshing and the premise itself is also quite intriguing. The background music and OST used also complements this show's nature very well (it sort of reminds of me video game music for some reason).

I also love the bits of genuinely funny comedy (like the hypothermia scene) and the nice chemistry between Sugimoto and Asirpa. It really keeps the show interesting despite the show's somewhat slow pacing.

The upcoming characters from the ED are all incredibly well-designed, which gets me hyped for where this story is going to lead (as long as there are no more horrendous CG bears).

Yeah, me!

@64BitRatchet @DatRandomDude the pacing is not good, it's by far one of the worst I've seen, and I say that without even having touched the manga. You can just feel an literally hear the character development, the binding between characters, and even dialogues being rushed. Especially with the chitatap; nobody would speak that fast in such a situation.

I still love this show so far though. The setting is unique and much needed (not a lot of attention for the Ainu cause in Japan untill recently), and the chemistry between Sugimoto and Asirpa is really strong. I also like how she doesn't judge him, while he stands up for her as a Ainu, the latter not being at all common in that period.

Good episode!
The OP is nice, but i really like the ED!

Sugimoto’s reaction when he had to eat the brain tho & Asripa sounds cute when she says Hinna Hinna ~~
It was also funny seeing both Shiraishi & Sugimoto freaking out and trying to look for ways to get some fire.
I’m liking the Escape king already, would surely like to see more of him.

I love the survival aspect of this series so far, it's very compelling to me.
I also loved the new character, the master escape guy who I can't remember his name, the part where him and Sugimoto were trying to start a fire was really funny. I'm so glad that this series also has a sense of humor. I've decided it, I'm really going to like this!
I understand what people are saying about the animation, but it really doesn't bother me since I'm so interested in the story and characters. The only time animation really kills the experience for me is when its jilted, floaty CGI like Berserk, which this doesn't have. (even the bear from episode 1 looked better than anything from Berserk)

If only a better studio with more resources and better staff (we need a new director, art director and animation director asap, cough cough) had animated this series, it could have turned out to be one of the highlights of this overall weak season... Unfortunately, I guess I'll have to read the manga instead.

Great well paced episode after that unfortunate start. The visuals are little bit messy (I think this will improve on later episodes) but the animation was solid. The pacing was didn't feel fast and the edgy main characters (which rather in good way) seems interesting especially their chemistry and reminds me of Drifters.

Also for me, ED >>> OP

I absolutely loved that opening. Both the song and the visuals were great, with a special emphasis on the latter considering the visuals in the anime itself have been a little meh. Glad to see they at least kept a good portion of the budget to invest in it which makes a guy like me who always enjoys great OP's/ED's pretty content. The visuals and song in the ending were amazing too.

Anyway, the history and culture which was displayed regarding the Ainu in episode 1 was the main factor which gripped me to carry on and pick up this anime. In this episode again from the start we're given a small history lesson on Hokkaido after the Sino-Russian war as well as reference to Karafuto which was an extremely important Island that was at the heart of a lot of woes and battles between Japan and Russia. Even until recent times there's been some tension regarding it's past. We also got through the inclusion of the enemy soldier, a history lesson into the Hokkaido 7th division in the army and their exploits in the war (Siege of Port Arthur, Battle at hill 203) which dubbed them the 'strongest battalion in the army' and also reference to the Hakodate war that precedes the current time frame of this anime by thirty years.. There was also that squirrel trapping lesson from Asirpa who is proving to be a bad ass character in her own right. Small informative things like this are always a bonus and i'm so glad there's plenty of it on show in this anime alongside the pretty enthralling main plot line.

That's whats elevating this show from just a typical fun little adventure story to something a couple shades heavier.

It's also worthy to note that scenes such as the one where Asirpa is in that quarrel with the shop owner is actually quite unique considering it displays the discrimination the Ainu went through whilst also referencing their history (regarding the mouth tattoos), there's also the scene where she's antagonised by the second prisoner and claims she's "used to" the discriminatory remarks. The Ainu's were a heavily repressed people and their discrimination is often avoided from Japanese media so this is actually a massive breathe of fresh air. We also saw more cultural references to the them through scenes depicting certain items such as the Makiri and it's significance. The Chitatapa which is an Ainu dish that Asirpa makes with the squirrel's she's trapped. There's also their way of saying thanks to their food through "Hinna, Hinna" which is their equivalent of "Itadakimas".

I've always enjoyed historical shows heavily and i know there's a ton of people in my position so i'm glad we have a show this season that's to our satisfaction in this sense.

The humour is also great so far. From Sugimoto's antics, the fire scene at the end to Asirpa's hunger which is a common comedic trope used in Anime. (Eg: Goku's constant hunger in the Dragonball Series). The prisoner and the fact that he's known as a master escape artists who somehow keeps a bunch of tools inside his mouth is also hilarious.

This scene also made me laugh way more than i care to admit.

Recommend me some short Manga!

Now I'm considering putting some of those wire traps in the park so I can catch a few squirrels for dinner. I'm not sure about chitatap, but squirrel does taste pretty good. My brother and I used to hunt them when we were kids. I like the trap idea better than shooting them with a .22 rifle.

So far I like Golden Kumuy and I'm not sure what the kvetching about visuals, etc, is all about. I find the characters and story compelling.

The animation looks choppy and sometimes woeful at times. There's also that disgustingly bad CGI bear in episode one. But that's virtually it. The animation for the most part is not bad at all.

But like all anime there's always going to be a bunch of individuals over emphasising certain negatives of a show. I've seen people claiming it's "unwatchable" because of the animation and it's statements such as that which cross the fine line between valid critique and actual bullshit idiocy.

Recommend me some short Manga!

I like this show but boy do i wish it looked better it's pretty funny more than i thought with the shit they get into were you wouldn't expect with a story about hunting down prisoners i'm glad they are copying down the tattoos first thing that came to my mind was wait you guys don't need to kill all of them and skin em!.

biggest threat this week was hypothermia

OP /ED is top tier glad man with a mission is still getting a lot of work but i'm bummed they didn't do the Megalo Box opening (it's still great) but with their theme of being wolf man realized it would've fit perfectly still this one has a wolf in as well

What a profound statement.

All jokes aside, this was a pretty good episode. I like the OP (on the other hand i might have to listen to the ED a little more to see if it grows on me), and the interactions between Sugimoto and Asirpa were nice to watch. The animation could be better but i like the story so far, so i can overlook it (for now).

Also, Shiraishi and Sugimoto's ordeal with hypothermia was unexpectedly funny.

i love this episode, in all seriousness, we can still find something laughable. Hypothermia is a real deal though, you don’t wanna mess with that.

and Asirpa face when asked Sugimoto to eat the brain, it’s cute. to be honest everything Asirpa do is cute, she’s still a kid after all

both the OP and ED is very good, i get the Kokkoku feelings in the OP, Geno Studio is really good at picking songs.

i can see why peopla kinda complain about the animation, but to be homest, there’s nothing extraordinarily bad from it, just not very detailed long shot, the story is there and it’s nice so it’s still enjoyable.

can’t wait for Immortal Sugimoto next story, this has been great so far.

The animation was good in this episode. Although the studio still has consistency problems, especially in scenes where the characters are in a distant perspective, for the most part it went well. But that's the least [in my opinion]. For the most part the animation was average, that is, good. I hope that the studio will overcome this from now on, both in the work and in the next productions.

I disagree with what some have said: budget has nothing to do with the animation and its consistency. What sets a studio apart from this is the timeline. If you are reading these lines, I tell you: do not believe in this litany that the series has budget problems and therefore has inconsistent parts, this has nothing to do with the animation itself.

To get a sense that consistency problems have more to do with timing than budget, just take examples like Just Because! and Märchen Mädchen. The latter having had many more problems than the first. People need to stop thinking that money determines the quality of a work. Attack on Titan's first season had serious problems, yet it managed to surpass him with scenes that surpassed each other.

Production values continue to be really inconsistent, but the story & characters are what keep me interested.

Still, I took a look at the manga, and I don't really think this episode was paced that well. A bit too much skipped dialogue and narration for my liking.

I'm definitely going to read it all once the anime ends.

Production value has nothing to do with consistency.

Real Hijikata was killed in the Battle of Hakodate. But here he survived and was hidden in the Abashiri Prison. So he is half real, half fiction. The mangaka used some references to the real vice commander of Shinsengumi.

Although the atmosphere is more relaxed than the previous episode, in serious moments the characters behave appropriately and the action is interesting and unpredictable in its evolution. The fact that it is clear from the outset that Sugimoto's undertaking is highly difficult to achieve, puts even more interest in the vision of the anime series. I am happy to know the traditions of the Ainu people. Can anyone tell me if they are still present in Japan or have become extinct over the centuries? Thanks in advance.
