Felt really bad for Rei. That backstory was so tragic. Now that makes more sense, why he's so depressed that much.

The episode was really tragic. Rei loses his family and no relative wants to take him in. A friend from his father took him in, because he lied about loving shogi. Then he gets better at shogi than his master's own children and feels like a cuckoo there. He decides to leave the house and live alone in order not to destory the family.

Rei is forced to play shogi professionally to earn money. I wonder if Rei would continue to play shogi, if he had a choice. Maybe he started to like it after investing so much time in it.

I don't think saying Rei destroyed his new family is fair. He was bullied at school and in his neighbourhood so family was the only thing he had that made him safe. Now that he lost it, if he went to the orphanage, that would put him in an even worse place. As he mentioned, his father's friend was the only person who treated him as an equal; it's a no brainer he'd prefer to live with him than be alone in the orphanage.

Let's just look at it from a children's point of view. Since Rei had to lie he liked shogi to stay with his father's friend in the first place, if he stopped being successful at it, his new 'father' could stop loving him or abandon him. It's not like he was trying to destroy his new family or get better at shogi just to spite his new siblings. I think in a way what happened to the family may be the father's fault. Rei told him he enjoyed shogi himself, but what about the other children? Didn't the father put pressure on them to train hard and become more and more successful?
I think the children must've felt insecure about their father even before Rei appeared in the picture. If they felt their father loved them no matter what, they wouldn't have such a strong need to prove themselves in shogi to stay in their father's good graces.

I've never liked SHAFT to be honest, and only decided to watch Sangatsu no Lion because the manga it is based on shares the author with Honey and Clover. Now I can't express how glad I am this one specific studio is making the anime, because the work they do here is simply brilliant. Every episode makes me speechless, this one especially - literally no words on how greatly directed it was. Every feelings Rei goes through are so vividly shown, starting from tenderness when his "father" gave him his cardigan, and ending on despair he fell into when he saw Momo's scratches. Wow, just wow. An award for portraiting peple's emotions.

Knowing Rei never liked shogi was a huge shock for me, didn't expect that. I thought he was passionate about it and that's why he chose to be a pro. And then it turns out he only started being serious about it out of fear. I just hope his attitude towards shogi has changed over the years, because if not...

That Kyouko girl was acting awfully, but from her point of view Rei must have been a real danger. I mean, he joined their family and was trying to steal her father from her and her brother. Or at least that's how she was seeing it. Children that age are very jealous of each other and want to draw parents' attention badly, so no wonder she was feeling endangered, especially since it was said that her father's attention was concentrated on shogi resultsi. Still, it doesn't explain why she sexually abused Rei, because for that even childish jealousness cannot be an explanation.

Aww, watching an adorable, lying Momo made this episode a little brighter at least <3

Hey look! A backstory that's actually woven well into the present narrative. How refreshing.

Second half of this episode was simply superb. I wish more shows would adapt this sort of sensible pace.

The comparison of Rei and a cuckoo was so goddamn clever!

The 'surpassing his family at Shogi' and the father telling his daughter to give up reminds me so much of the Pet Girl of Sakurasou.

One of the best episodes this season so far. We finally got more of Rei's past (none of which were pleasant), and I think they did the storytelling wonderfully. It surely made an impact and made me feel for the characters even more. The metaphor with the cuckoo was a really nice touch. I absolutely loved it.

Dang, that was a great episode. Rei's backstory was really well done. Coming back to have his family all killed, lying about liking Shogi to be taken in by his father's best friend (and rival in shogi it seems) - one person who actually speaks to him. Except well, after surpassing Kyouko and Ayumu, looks like he just wants to get out of there as soon as possible ... man, I guess I can see why he was so silent when he was playing against his "father" earlier in the show. Not to mention how both his real kids stopped playing Shogi ... and was Kyouko that girl who was implied to be forcing herself on Rei a coupe episodes ago? Or at least, was holding him down. Either way, dang, I hope that he can recover his relationship with his "family" at least a little throughout the show. Dang, this is one of those shows that would be great to marathon haha XD

I afraid of the cucko... See... Could be possible that Rei repeat the same process on Akari`s House ? (Supposing, that this curse of him is true).

By the way... The use of psychological time on the narratives are very good, the pace stills slow, but that is very good, the plot isn`t swalloing the characters, Rei is having space to develop his monologues with a good selection of words (without been simplist and cliche, and without been too hard to undestand).

Another 5/5 episode.

You took that scene too literally. Rei reacted that way because he felt it was perfect analog to how he felt when he played and won against Kouda in the first episode, who just looks a little different because he's older and combed his bangs back.

Besides, even if he did - do you seriously think he'd be able to attend official shogi matches or even walk around freely without any sort of means to disguise himself or some sort of alias?

That was... an analogy...

Rei indirectly caused the destruction of Kouda's family by driving the son to hate Kouda and sister to be a delinquent

The episode was quite tragic, but they still managed to sneak in a hilarious scene with Kobayashi Yuu voicing a random dog.

So I guess MC was raped by his sister, and we just found out why.

My thoughts exactly. Unless something unexpected is revealed, I'm pretty certain the 'sister' will be revealed to be the one who abused him as a way to get back at him.

Rei's past is really sad and tragic. One day, his family is all fine and dandy, then they're gone for good. It left me feeling sad just thinking about it. D=

Not only that, but his adoptive father is ridiculously harsh on his kids. He only seems to care much about shogi and couldn't care less for his other kids if they were upstaged at all. No wonder Kyouko went off the rails.

Still, the way the whole of Rei's past was directed in this episode was done superbly. =)

On a lighter note, Rei's time with Momo was sweet. The inner monologues of the cats as well as the hyperactive dog were amusing and always leave a smile on my face.

Best episode so far. =)

If I believe and understood well the translation of the first episode, the murder in the news didn't occur in the kouda family and the 2 people speaking about the son beating the father were adressing the shogi game where Rei beat Kouda and stopped him in the same time to reach a certain level in the shogi league (maybe?)

Furthermore I agree with Ceresia's opinion above in this page, actually the father (and the mother) are responsible for not showing the love their children needed and giving them the necessary self-confidence. If one wants to look at it even harshly, it's kind of sad that it's a kid, Rei, who first becomes aware of the problem, takes the blame, takes the responsibility and finally even takes action and leaves the home. Who is the most mature and sensible person here? Rei. Masachika Kouda looks like an idiot in comparison, even though he's nice at heart.

I thought the same. Until the moment that Rei take Momo arm and remember his sister I was ok, just with a uncomfortable feeling. After that was "go with the train or it will pass over you".

And yes, SHAFT is doing a great job.

... Wow. Just... wow.

Rewatch the first episode and go back to that scene. They mentioned a name in the news report and it was NOT Kouda's. It was about a complete stranger. Again, as the other person and I have tried to tell you, the only purpose of that news report is similar to that of the documentary in this episode -- to provide a non-literal analogy.

So much tragic backstory for Rei. His whole family died because of a stupid drunk driver. The moment with Momo was really sad :( He didn't like shogi at first and said yes to his dad just so he can survive. He got so good at it, that his step siblings went downhill. The brother is doing terrible at school and the sister just hates his guts. The comparison with Rei and the cuckoo bird was very clever. This was an emotional episode.

While his past was tragic, I cant really blame the children of that household in acting that way. He was really like a cuckoo.

What's up with last week's anime!

First Hibike!, then Natsume and then 3-gatsu. All three episodes (episode 5 of each individual anime) are contenders for individual episode of the season and all aired last week! I haven't seen three fantastic episodes midway the season of any season in the same week in a long, long while.

Hibike! probably just edged it (in almost every English and Japanese sites out there) but I loved both Natsume and 3-gatsu episodes as well.

This prologue served really, now you understand even better the reasons for which the main character, is found in the current environment. Touching certain narrative passages, among which, I quote the first to find themselves in front of their dead loved ones and hear how the activity is slipped away from their bodies: touch them and feel its cold emanating, it's a really sad feeling. The second, is the move from the frying pan into the fire, finding himself in the case of the protagonist having to attend to family disintegration and indirectly be guilty. However, as a whole is another good test for these souls, that manages to be tender and cruel at the same time. To mention the drawings, really superb, ditto the soundtrack.

Hmm this was a another great episode and quite a bittersweet one at that
Its nice that we get to see what Rei's childhood was like and man he sure had a rough one losing his whole family in one accident. His foster family though was nice for the most part apart for the daughter. Man what a bully and a attention seeker.

But we get to see how Rei actually developed into the person he is now.
And the reason why he moved out and become a loner but also a master at Shogi.

The plot with Momo though was pretty funny especially when they encountered the overexcited dog lol. The inner thought for that dog was funny.

At least the dog was apologetic about the fact that it caused momo to trip
and fall though

Cute episode though and Rei taking care of Momo was nice and hearwarming to see

Lol even the pets have their inner thoughts expressed lol

Hmm im loving the fact that this episode shows Rei's childhood
but damn losing your whole family in one day is a terrible thing
I can't imagine how hard it will be for a child

hmm it seems that Rei's fathers family is rather difficult
and Kiawako was horrible at the funeral treating a family member like that

hmm even in his foster home Rei still had a hard life eh
man what a rough childhood
man Kyouko was such a bully and a attention seeker as well

So thats why Rei wanted to leave his foster home
he didn't want to cause damage to the relationship between the family members

Nice to know his view on shogi & motivation. He doesn't like it, but learned it to stay close to his real dad, and ironically to leave his foster dad asap to protect the messed up family.

The thing that resonated with me the most this episode was Kyouko's despair during their last shown game. The enormous time difference, the small gestures, the clock slowly ticking down to zero. And then her dad making her quit professional shogi in the end. Just started reading the manga and SHAFT is doing a superb job of going above and beyond with this adaptation.

The fuck does one have to do in his previous life to suffer so much in this one? Parents and beloved little sister dies, grandfather too old to take care of him, aunt plotting to throw him into an orphanage so that her husband can take over grandpa's hospital. He gets taken in by his father's old shogi rival and becomes traumatized by the fact that his talent for shogi surpasses that of his new "father's" kids. And in the end he has to leave even that little semblance of a family behind because he believes that it's all his fault. And all that before he even turned 18.

Damn, I feel depressed just typing all that out... the episode was so damn good in presenting Rei's back story.

On a side note, Momo is way too cute. Her reactions and her actions are all adorable. You just can't help wanting to pinch her cheeks! Oh, and that documentary... funny to say I actually watched the real one.

Best episode yet. Looking forward to this every single week.

Momo-chan getting hurt broke my heart. Seeing the dog sad after he realized he made Momo-chan cry also broke my heart.

What happened to Rei's family, being adopted but not accepted, being challenged when he never really loved the game (despite his immense talent and skill), not finding a place where he truly belonged, wanting to move out because he didn't want to tear the 'adoptive family' apart, etc. all of it broke my heart.

Stop breaking my fucking heart! D:
