Wow, that was freaking intense, loved pretty much almost every bit of it especially with the action in space.

But yeah, imo this battle was worth the hype to wait for. Loved the intensity, momentum, and the pilots that carried the fight against the Gauna. There's also quite a decent amount of explosive action all over the place. Best episode imo of the season so far.

This episode was relentless. Tanikaze... first Tsugumori's left arm, now its thruster? The man sure is resourceful. I know it's deemed a sin to deviate from the source material but Polygon did a damn fine job with that climax.

Had to hold my guts the whole episode. This show's too intense.

Tsumugi and Izana seem in a bad pretty bad shape, wondering how is Kunato doing.

Insanity.

I don't get how his thruster turned into a gauna-core-seeking projectile though. How was it swerving around all those obstacles? It was deliberately avoiding them. But it's just a thruster... or so I thought?

Definitely the most intense and suspenseful episode of the season so far =o

That display emotion by Tsumugi in this episode was breathtaking and the way she just power through all those Guana through sheer strength and willpower was nothing short of amazing and sad at the same time

I thought that Sidonia were going to take a big hit since the Guana combined into a Higgs canon but thank god they managed to stop it thanks to Tsumugi and the last chance efforts by Tanikaze.....I really hope that Tsumugi and Izana are okay though TwT

Yeah, I hope we get an explanation for that next episode. At first I thought Tanikaze was guiding it remotely, but he was pretty much wiped out after he fired the thruster so it definitely wasn't him.

Her cannon deflection was one hell of a move! From the pv u can see she's being repaired so hopefully she'll be fine <3

Nagate's sacrifical attack was BA!!!

Time for a Izana power up :P

It does show how a person would act if they had to do so much killing with his/her bare hands. No matter what life form, Tsugumi is having to take on the horrors much more closely was depicted quite nicely.

Always enjoying how the group attacks the gauna with their different formations. Tsugumi blocking that attack and Nagate making that attack, it really was too close to home.

The preview looks really interesting, can't wait.

My best guess is that there were developments in the background. In the manga, TOHA has made effort into developing thrusters capable of being used as projectiles if need be, however, I don't recall there being any homing capabilities.

Dat battle, those sound effects, those everything! I mean I know it makes no sense to have sound in space but whatever, this shit was Godly. Also I'm not sure if it's the 60 FPS upscale but the animation is miles better than in S1.

5/5

Not always. Tbh I'm more than happy with all the changes they made. I was on the edge of my seat for the whole episode, something that doesn't happen often when I watch adaptations of stuff I read. Anyway they more or less covered up most of the deviations and they should be following the manga by the next episode or so, however something tells me that they are going to skip some of the next chapters.

They probably just made it do that for rule of cool, unless thrusters can still autopilot when detached, which I don't remember was ever stated. I don't think he was aiming for the core though, he just wanted to cause a hyggs interference explosion like he did in S1 (and back then he didn't aim for the core, just anywhere that has a high density of hyggs particles, so basically any part of the canon inside is a good target).

I think they just wanted to keep things fresh since they already changed the last battle in S1 into what you just described (Well, it wasn't Tanikaze but the idea is still the same).

That was some of the best mecha battle footage we've had since Unicorn. Like someone said above, it was absolutely relentless. Polygon is doing an awesome job with this.

I'm still baffled by the score it has in MAL. Some people sure are harsh with mecha shows no matter how good they are.

Being mecha isn't the only reason it gets flak. There are other reasons like 3DCGI phobia, some manga purists, people writing it off as an Attack on Titan rip off in space, etc.

Just ignore all that and enjoy the series, it's doing quite well in Japan too and that's what matters most in terms of reception.

Epic space fight episode!

Chimera seems to be split in half though. I wonder how serious that will be. Izana has probably only one hand broken.

There were some issues with physics when they were shooting sideways but that would be nitpicking really.

Chimera is similar to Gauna physically, so as long as she lives she can still regenerate her body.

If you watch the last bits again, Izana's leg was trapped between broken parts of the cockpit as well.

Why didnt Sidonia evade the cannon by emergency acceleration?.. and somehow the chimera was able to deflect a cannon that had the power of destroying the whole ship?..

Do you realise how much mass Sidonia has considering its size? To evade, Sidonia needs to fire it's rotational thrusters and accelerate using its biggest engines at the rear to get out of the hyggs cannon beam trajectory . Sidonia doesn't have that luxury of time. I also don't think Sidonia has emergency thrusters, remember Sidonia is a seed ship, a colony ship and not a military warship.

As for the last question, no idea but it's Sci-fi which will likely be explained in the next few episodes. Also you have to consider chimera didn't deflect it fully, only by 5-10 degrees so requiring less energy/strength and even at that chimera still got heavily damage so also highlighting the Guana super-powerful hyggs particle beam cannon.

Not even 5-10 degrees, that's giving her way too much credit not to mention the beam wouldn't be so close to Sidonia if that were the case. 1 degree at best I'd say. She literally used herself as a meatshield and let the beam graze her to slightly alter its direction, the reason her plan worked at all is that there was enough distance between the deflection point and Sidonia for the very tiny angle to make an effect on the trajectory of the beam.

Losing thousands of people is better than Sidonia getting annihilated entirely with 0 survivors. The problem here was that they didn't have enough time to do it; as said in the episode the beam would still hit them and they'd lose half of Sidonia or something so they're screwed whether they tried to evade or not.

That's what I meant. Last season made it clear that accelerating Sidonia takes time which they didn't have in this episode .

Friggin' Tsumugi was epic as F! Loved how she went berserk and crush them Gauna. Not to mention that badass Hyggs cannon deflection move. Hands down, best girl of Sidonia. No competition.

Tanikaze's Kamikaze move was pretty awesome too; paving the way from the other knights to destroy the core. Quite daring of him.

Good episode. Thankfully, Izana and Tsumugi will get their fixes by next week.

That looks fairly human to me. Wouldn't something like that in the manga tie into some important development later on?

Still, Tanikaze's suicide efforts are fun to watch! I really hope Tsumugi didn't survive that unscathed, since it was powerful enough to destroy Sidonia.

Excellent episode though. Exciting to watch.

I like how they made this battle the one where Izana hurts his/her arm and leg, it works well, and also how Izana went to try to tell Tsumugi to stop, but she only stops when Izana got in an accident. Can't say I liked hearing Tsumugi scream, but I think the portrayal of her anger pretty well. I don't remember this battle being that long either, but it was quite intense and I enjoyed what they did here.

Really that makes it edgy for you? It's just a bit more thought provoking on the nature of Gauna than just having a fancy action scene.
