That's more of a build up episode for the next one than anything else. We did not learn anything new, but I am interested whether Mikado will take the offer to become the blue gang leader or not.

Could someone explain why Shizuo could not just barge into Izaya's apartment by destroying the door? Was the door some kind of heavily reinforced door? Because that particular thing felt cheap & Shizuo could not do it just for the sake of him getting framed.

yuigadokusonmaru said:
That's called character development. Shizuo from season 1 would just have kicked the door off without thinking about the owner of the building, Narita even tweeted about it.

Which part of the 1st season that made him like this(did not destroy Izaya's apartment door)?

In the novel it says that Shizuo could have barged in, but he didn't want to cause trouble for the landowner by destroying the door when he thought Izaya wasn't there (because he fell for the ol' "We changed addresses to X so don't come in" trick). It also states that he has been able to better control his anger after the Slasher arc.

Production values are awful this season. What is going on?! Characters are off-model at times, and when they aren't they're strangely tall and lanky, for some reason.

And what the hell happened to Brains Base? Why aren't they adapting this season? They fell off big time. They're not even adapting the 2nd season of Oregairu in the Spring. They used to be one of my favorite studios...

Wait, but he did punch two random people up to the sky in this 2nd season, right? So he could control his anger on some door but not on people's lives? That's quite confusing I must say.

This is their first anime show so it's not that surprising the animation quality is not that good.

Maybe Brains Base have something up on their sleeve? A big anime that they are working on & will be released in the near future? Just a wild guess.

When Hollywood and Egor were fighting Egor took a briefcase containing the money Shizuo and Tom had collected to use as a weapon. Shizuo thought that they were both thieves so he retaliated. Shizuo has gained some ability to control his anger, particularly when innocents are involved (for example he doesn't want to cause trouble for the landowner and doesn't go crazy in front of Akane when he learns Izaya is involved), but he will still attack people who fight him/screw him over as long as innocents aren't harmed in doing so.

I see. But I still cannot understand why exactly Shizuo changed. Which part of the Slasher arc that made him better at controlling his anger? I cannot remember any particular thing in the 1st season that made Shizuo the way he is.

When it's got to have a low quality animation, I kinda wished it just shouldn't be in this arc with supposedly exciting action scenes (Celty-Vorona chasing scenes) or interesting characterization. In this episode, Aoba really looked just like ordinary chief of bad guys. Well I still don't know what of him, but he's been quite well drawn in the previous arc with his 'fake innocent smile' which I don't see it now.
I noticed Shizuo and Aoba are two characters with least care in drawing this episode.
I actually wished they'd better make recap episode of Ruri's arc and have some more time to give it their best for this arc.

The production design or background looks good, though. It's got a realistic approach, eh. Ironically it just contrasts more to its then visible lacks of character animation.

If you rewatch the end of the Slasher arc it will go into a bit more detail, but basically prior to the end of the Slasher arc Shizuo would lose control and would attack anyone in his way at full power when he got angry. However, when he was attacked by all those Slashers he was able to control that anger and not seriously harm/kill anyone in the fight.

First it was the Saika/Slashers incident in S1 where he went all out and discovered he could control his rage to an extent. Then was Akane's appearance and situation that furthering that change because he like children and doesn't want to scare them. It's been a slow but subtle process. Remember his ideal is to be normal person.

There no way she going turn around now and do anything of sort. Her loyalty and ties to Izaya have been effectively cut.

Shizuo punches a lot of people so he/she probably didn't realize who you were talking about. The Hollywood arc does in fact come after the Slasher arc (8 or 9 months after if I remember right).

Shizuo getting framed was really stupid and unconvincing! Ok, he's dumb enough to follow a moving notice, I can believe that. I wouldn't have smashed the door just to check, either. I'd go to see the new address first, to make sure it was not a joke, even though I'd be completely sure all along that I was being toyed with. But you don't break down people doors without a reason, so I'd put up with being toyed with just to make sure it was a ploy.

But the way he was framed... Tell me, why did noone visit that place before him? Someone could find those bodies any time prior to him rushing in, and then he wouldn't get framed. And how did that mafiosi so conveniently pop up behind him 20 secs after he walked in? Shizuo could easily appear on the scene later than the mafiosi and then he wouldn't get framed. I don't think Izaya could've planned the timing.

In real life, it wouldn't have worked. Too highly coincidental for a functional set-up.

P.S. I loved the episode, but the trap was so disappointing.

Breaking door wouldn't have done any good for a couple of reasons:

1) He's trying to limit his destructive tenderices to people who deserved it. Breaking down of a potential unrelated person would make him feel bad. Shizuo starting to think about the consequences of his actions instead of only giving into pure rage like always. Whether his choice was right or wrong one here doesn't matter as long as he put some thought in it.
2) Besides Izaya really isn't there, just Namie who he would have assumed was a new tenet and ended up feeling like an idiot for bothering her. So it does him no good anyway.
3) Why does it matter if anyone found bodies before Shizuo? With the way those men were killed and fact he was near the building at the time he would have been put under suspicion regardless. He just unluckily worsened his situation by getting there before of them. Seems like a minor thing to get hang up on.

That makes sense.

But how could Izaya predict WHEN Akane reveals that he was the one who set her up to attack Shizuo? He had no way to know when she does it. She fell ill, was treated, had a nap, etc. I thought a lot of time has passed. So the timing of the trap was just too lucky.

In my opinion, Shizuo could as well end up going to the trap scene well after the bodies were found and cleaned up.

Shizuo 1st went to where Namie was (Izaya's real office). Namie could simply call Izaya and Izaya would set up the hit, place the bodies on the scene, etc (not going to specifically say what happens since anime isn't there yet). The reason why someone saw Shizuo on the scene was 1/2 coincidence and 1/2 something that will be explained at the very end of this arc (though Shizuo would be suspected anyway because of how the murderer used his bear hands and not weapons).
