No, I'm not here to hate(I've dropped it), I'm not here to judge, I'm not here to criticize. I'm just asking for perspective.

So an action fantasy ecchi show, what do you find compelling about it? Why and how do you enjoy it?

EDIT: FEEL FREE TO GO INTO DETAILS AND SPOILERS!

Est. and Restia.

the LNs are awesome from volume 4 onwards or so at least, though the (first?) anime won't get that far in :/

anyways simple answer would be having super cute girls and a lot of mindless fun; anime is entertainment media in the end and doesn't need to be deep to be enjoyable

a fun but "bad" show is still better than a "good" but boring show so to speak

Character

The most important aspect on this kind of anime. Even though setting can be same with other but if the character is good then the show is good and opposite also apply.

For example we have Est here.

It gets better with every volume. Though things look typical thus far, the plot progression and character development is what makes this series really appealing. Unfortunately, the anime only touches the surface of this series, and I'm pretty sure we won't even get to the actual Blade Dance.

Kamito, Est, and Restia especially are really well fleshed-out characters with the novels detailing their past and how that affects their current selves and the situations around them.

Why cute girls of course. Everyone likes them.
I like light anime like this as a mindless time waster. However, it tends to get on my nerves quickly if the MC is an idiot (this one's alright so far), or if it goes overboard with slapstick.

Because we know what's going to happen in these type of shows and if they exceed our exceptions then it a good show.

And I think Action/ Fantasy Harem is better then purely Harem with just comedy.
As of 27/7/14 I have decided trap anime Sword Art Online II has more appeal than Mahouka.

How each characters has different speaking pattern.
I really love drama cd of some anime, manga and light novel series.
Some characters acting high and mighty for good for nothing reasons in a serious tone is what makes the show appealing.
The interaction between, male main character and heroine, and heroine between heroine.

For an action, ecchi, fantasy anime I think they like the action, ecchi, and fantasy parts. A strong main character with girls falling over him, a different setting and powers than a normal setting anime, etc. It's not much different why people like other actin/ecchis.

That anime adaption was so bad, I felt sorry for the author seeing that it could have been much better, they took out all the plot and added fanservice instead.

Except for the fact that most of the characters in this show and in pretty much every other harem are one-dimensional archetypes that are distinguishable by breast size rather than personality.

By these type of shows I'm curious what other shows you would put in this category.

I'm a female and I like this show. A simple fun fantasy. The girls get to do some fighting. A little touch of romance . And so what if there is some fan service, it's funny to see some poor schmuck caught in bed with a loli while the other girls get irrate.

Fan service never bothers me, i get the humor in it . However when it goes past a certain point and you get ridiculous boob infatuation like something like Dragonar Acadamy which also isn't well structured then I won't watch it.

Escapism in anime is just fine. Not every anime show needs to be some serious show to be enjoyed or something pretentious like Monogatari.

Infinite Stratos, High School DxD. Any ecchi show that has a plot with an epic feel to it, as in: there's a whole bigger picture to it and our characters are fighting for good or w/e other reason, in the mean time having ecchi comedy be most of the episodes.

Gender is kind of irrelevant, but good to know. Eh, there's plenty of simple fun anime, that's preference, I'm really liking Hanayamata atm. That's OK, I also do like my fighting lollies chicks. I wouldn't call it romance, but certainly a romantic element, though I find it extremely irksome when the loli is naked. Such scenarios are just creepily uncomfortable to be mostly because of the character designs.

Well the manservice in Free didn't bother me, what bothers me are the character interactions. As for here, I guess it's another style of comedy I'm not tolerant to yet. I do like boobies, but tripping oppai girl is just something hard for me to swallow as an excuse for fanservice. NGNL played it up further as comedy and it was actually funny to me, here it isn't.

The anime I indulge in is an even more dangerous type of escapism. I got used to Monogatari's "pretentiousness" and actually enjoy it, though admittedly the girls there aren't "cute", they are sexualized in a more reasonable manner I would say.

I totally agree with this answer!

I'm female also and watch a lot of these types of anime for the same reason I read Fantasy books. Its to escape to other worlds and see things different from the real world we live in.

I also enjoy animes like Monogatari also, but I have always been a person who enjoys all different types of genres in everything I do whether its movies, books, music, video games, and anime!
So glad that I'm not a huge manga reader, because the manga readers WHINE WAY TOO MUCH and have to RUIN every adapted anime for the ANIME ONLY WATCHERS!

Just ignore the tsunderes and ecchi scenes (if it disturbs you ) and you will find interesting plots, that could have been critically acclaimed if author's didn't put tsundere tropes and ecchi scenes. But not all anime/manga/LN's in this type of genre (is it even a genre?),IS,STB and DAL is still lame in my opinion. And author's should stop using the accidentally saw naked while bathing or saw in her underwear while changing 1st meetings between the male and female MC's.

I'd have to say you are overstating the amount of ecchi in this show. it's actually quite mild and does not take up much time in the show.

yes certain fanservice scenes are dull. Like the tripping breast grab or falling down panty shot.

I'm watching this show for the fantasy element anyways. The fanservice isn't distracting / In other shows it is and that's when I lose interest in the show.

The bottom line is every person has their own set limit for how much ecchi they can stomach. if you can't get past that set limit for yourself then you won't enjoy the show.

-----------------------------------------
As for character interaction I'd have to agree with you. Other than Claire and Komito it's a bit weak so far.

For mindless fun? I stuck with ZnT for 4 seasons (although that may have to do with the completionist in me) and this one is quite similar in comparison. Normally for this type of shows, characters (more specifically the girls) are what kept the interest and sometimes they do have an appealing story although it tends to go unnoticed due to the fan-service. For me, Restia and Claire's sister are appealing enough mysteries to stay on with this show.

Highschool DxD has first-grade fan service and some of the most attractive girls in anime but if you bother to read further, it actually has quite an interesting lore and decent enough plot that don't get really fleshed out in the anime. Apparently the novel for this anime is quite good so I believe this is the same case.

True, most of the characters are your typical stock harem characters but imo Kamito is a bit different since unlike most harem MC, he's actually confident enough to tease the girls. There really aren't that many harem protagonist that can do what he does without coming off as an asshole (like the one from Hagure Yuusha and Ichiban Ushiro). Est is also quite different in that she's an obedient one but also mysterious and has a bold attitude. By comparison the fan service in this anime is also nowhere near the level of your usual ecchi harem show, not that I mind fan service but sometimes it can be bad.. real bad like Walkure Romanze.

If you already made a decision I guess there is nothing we can do.

Still in general
Pros ....
Sympathetic characters.
Simplicity.
Entertainment, kills time, escapism.
Some feed for your fetishes too (unless your fetish is sadism)
Can be relaxing
Unrealistic.

Cons...
Can get easily annoying through character or repeatedly stupid scenes.
Story is simple, character development is non existent in majority of the shows.
Not much gore if you looking for that.
Unrealistic.

Considering that other "better" shows tends to get drown in ocean of blood or choke themselves to death with over the top complexity, anime/harem isn't a bad choice, as they mostly fill the gab which other "serious" or "realistic" or "complex" show can't do.
Signature removed. It was too good for this cruel world.

Well, let's see.
First, you must like ecchi and harem to at least handle the boredom it is.
Second, look forward for fanservice.
Third, see all the character designs (for fanservice)
and realize how hot can animated characters be.
Fourth and the most important, watch the show just for fanservice and you MUST like Est.

Just kidding... I actually don't enjoy too much watching it, I guess I'm just watching it because of Est (the character above /) :3

But people interested in ecchi might like it, it depends on the taste.

^Basically this. Regarding the last part in particular,I definitely agree that some breather shows like this can be nice every once in a while. If one constantly watches very serious, realistic, dark, dramatic, complex shows all the time without having enough breathers, there's always that risk of enjoying each of them less & less and becoming a complete elitist. I'm not against being the audience being pretentious,as that can drive producers & writers to make better stuff but I think we should also be able to enjoy simpler stuff as well. Variety is also nice!

Also,Kamito is not a bad MC,seeing what one usually expects from these types of shows. I actually find him to be the most likeable character in the show. On the other hand,Claire annoy's me to death and if I were to drop this show, she'd be the main reason, although I won't. But that's based on preferences so it shouldn't count much.

Despite how poor the anime adaptation is compared to the novels, the story is actually good and I can't wait to see what happens in the end. Also the girls are cute and have cute reactions. Claire becomes progressively less tsun and more dere, so that's a good thing. Also the OP song is great.

Ecchi dude, ecchi and waifus, tiddies, panty shots, upskirts, bikinis/beach episodes, full frontal nudity, bath/onsen scenes, lewd lolis, big tiddies onee-sans, "ara ara" teacher/nurses, tsundere childhood firiends, himederes, kuudere lolis with white hair (these are the best ones), I can't never get enough of this shit mate.

Some people like their CGDCT (which I find most of them unappealing from the get going save some exception like K-On or YoriMoi), some other like their Isekai (kinda the same story for me with NGNL being the exception), women have their yaois and reverse harems, and some of us have harem/ecchi that we enjoy without bothering anyone, live and let live.
