Yesterday, it was announced that the 36th Doraemon movie, titled "Stand by Me Doraemon," will be the first full-length 3DCG movie for the series and will be released next summer. While the story will be original, it will be based on famous scenes from the manga including "Mirai no Kuni kara Harubaru to" (Coming a Long Way from Future Land), "Sayounara, Doraemon" (Goodbye, Doraemon), and "Nobita no Kekkon Zenya" (One Night Prior to Nobita's Wedding Day). Yamazaki Takashi and Yagi Ryuuichi are directing the film. They have stated that the choice of 3DCG will allow viewers to really feel Doraemon's secret tools and that the movie will be for all Doraemon fans, both young and old. This movie also celebrates 80th anniversary of birth of Fujiko F. Fujio, the creator of Doraemon, next year.

At first I thought it'd look like the shitty CG we usually in anime... but this is waaay better.

I'm planning to watch some more Doraemon stuff anyway, so why not give it a try whenever it comes online.

dat animation. In all seriousness this looks great. Being 3DCG like most of the American animated movies are nowadays this could possibly see some popularly in the U.S. market which would be nice.

Initially i thought that something must be wrong with Disney for producing Doraemon, turns out i was wrong.

No but seriously, that was really impressive 3D animation. Way way better than the usual CG and Cel-shade that i've often seen in a bunch of anime lately (which look jarring due to failure in blending with hand-drawn animation). It's probably already on par with the likes of Toys story and The Incredibles that only Disney and their crazy budget could pull off. Now i'm seriously looking forward to see it come out on cinema already

Well, I guess if Saint Seiya could get a CGI film, Doraemon can get one too!

Next up: Dragon Ball.

Will watch it just because it's Doraemon. But like DateYutaka said, tradition is dying. Sometimes I wish a traditionally animated series like Urusei Yatsura or Maison Ikkoku was created..

Looks like pixar works on their early days.
It's quite rare to see Doraemon Movies taking from manga main storyline, and the beginning at that.
Perhaps they wanted to reintroduce Doraemon to the world, after all it's manga was just recently brought to western market.

Pls, no. I'm still traumatized by it's western adaptation.

Just saying, but Toriko wasn't in CGI :P
Dragon Ball in 3DCG... I'm not sure if that'll work.

One thing not translated and reported in the initial post is that next year it is the 80th anniversary of birth of Fujiko F Fujio, the creator of Doraemon, so this 3DCG carries additional significance in celebrating Fujiko's legacy.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I'm glad they decided to make a 3DCG Doraemon movie. The animation is very sharp, it's definitely an improvement from Pixar's early works. It looks like they really focus on character's mouths and emotions. The blushes and moe smiles are added. This sure is done in 3DCG, but it's Japan's 3DCG :)

It looks horrible imo. Doraemon is the only one that doesn't look really bad, if not, all the other characters just look... so... weird.

Cel animation is practically non-existent. Nowadays it's all computer.

Precisely.
MajinSaga, I suggest you check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_non-Japanese_Doraemon_versions

Hongkong and Thailand got the anime even back in early 80s. And I think Hongkong has the honor of being the first location outside Japan to air Doraemon TV series, back in 1981 !!

And not just Asia, Italy got it in 1982 !!
