THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER.
----------------------------------------
Chapter 40 just came out in the February 2013 issue of Gangan Joker. It is on pages 87 - 136. It's called "The Memories of the Shadow - 4".

This is a very intense chapter. We finally see what really happened (according to Yukariko) and it isn't pretty. I was right a few chapters back when I stated that Yukariko had no intention of being the sacrifice, and sure enough, she was an active and deliberate participant in Yuuko's sacrifice. But Yukariko didn't expect the "collateral damage", so things ended up much worse than she expected.

Now, as I've stated before, Kirie is the only person who knows Yukariko's secret. Yukariko is already responsible for 2 deaths - will one more matter if it means that she can safely take her secret to her grave?

The next chapter comes out in the March 2013 issue which will be published on February 22.

I think I may suggest we change the synopsis for this manga as the circumstances around Yuuko's death are no longer mysterious.

Yukariko didn't just randomly point in Yuuko's direction in this version... She pointed right at her and called out her name even with her veil in place! Did she push her down the stairs too or just watch the men do it? Couldn't tell from the mass of hands pushing poor Yuuko. And the broken leg was no accident of the fall down the stairs either, they broke it on purpose so she could not escape.

It didn't stop the epidemic of course.

Father hanged himself.

Run Kirie, run!

My interpretation of the scene is that Yukariko watched while the village men shoved Yuuko down the stairts, but that she didn't physically participate. Since Yukariko was acting as the priestess there, it wouldn't have been appropriate for her to physically get involved. But no doubt about it - she was the Judas there.

I couldn't see an indication of the time that passed before Yukariko went back to check on Yuuko. Was she expecting to find her alive? Her scream seemed to indicate that she was sad about her sister's death but it doesn't seem like she returned the same day when she might have been saved.

I had the impression that it was at least several days before she returned because of what happened in between. It appeared that it took a while for guilt to sink in, and only after it was obvious that the murder didn't help anything at all.

One thing I can't decide is if the comb was dropped when Yuuko was pushed down the stairs, or if Yuuko crawled back up the stairs and shoved the comb under the door before she died... Yukuriko's reaction at finding the comb suggests the later, which makes the whole situation even more tragic.

Very dark and tragic. Pretty obvious why the memories went to Shadow Yuuko, would be hard to keep those painful memories, even for a ghost...

Sorry, I buy the actual Gangan Joker magazines so I have no idea if you can download them. I never download, I always support the mangaka.

The usual places for raw scans like Sen Manga don't appear to carry Dusk Maiden, so you are stuck with either digging through Google in the hopes of finding a scan, waiting for subbers to put up subbed scans, or actually ordering the issue from places like Amazon.jp or CD Japan like hpulley and I did.

Good luck -

Such a cruel past indeed. So she died of the plague. Anyways, the chapter was pretty close with the anime and I'm pleased with that.

I'll just leave this here:

Damn that was cruel. Poor Yuuko. I hate Yukariko even more now no matter how much she wants to ask for forgiveness. What she did was too cruel.

Are you serious, old hag? You dare to ask for forgiveness after sacrificing your own sister? God, how much I hate superstition. A useless state of mind that caused more than just one death over the course of history.
Go, Yuuko, and drag that person down to hell.

So we knew this was what happened based on how things went so far on the story but to actually hear it was really depressing. The scene where Yukariko mourned for Yuuko with her head on her lap was a good one.

Next chapter should be out soon. Can't wait.

Madness, betrayal and regret. The story of how Yuuko died by Yukariko's hands.

I'm sure Kirie has a lot more to say about Yuuko, but I doubt Yukariko would believe the existence of 'normal' Yuuko, who she could not see. The crisis of the old school building's impending demolition continues.

Some beautiful quotes you posted there but all of them fade before the betrayal of Yukariko.

"Sister, I'm doing this all for you. Having your legs broken and being buried alive is all for your sake. Because I LOVE you, o dear sister. I'm doing this out of LOVE. Don't you understand?!"

Woah, that was one dark chapter. And such twisted turns sisterly love did take. The way Yukariko tried to justify it by saying her sister wouldn't have to deal with the plague or guilt was more frightening than the act of having pointed out her sister to me.

wow such a tragic deep chapter.

Yuuko's faith how i see it is so sad. having died in such a sudden sacrificial way and even more by her sister fears. with all that its given that one could become a ghost with a grudge and hate, but the target of that hate being ur own loved sister, THAT makes if impossible for the way Yuuko was to even truly hate or kill her. probably why when she realized who she hate she forgot about it and gave all that hate for Shadow Yuuko to bear.

though i wish Kirie said something about Yuuko, maybe she will later?

i hear you Treacherous bitch deserves more then hell Yukariko should of had a curse on her and her kids and her kids kids, i dont care if Yukariko feels bad now i want to see her suffer, she stole her future away and her own sister.............

il tell you what should of happened -

after what they did to yuuko she went on living thinking everything is going to be ok but after hearing what happened to yuuko the father beat Yukariko for what she did every day til he killed him self hating what Yukariko did to yuuko and now she was all alone but still the plague was still killing everyone and everyone blamed Yukariko for they believed she didn't do it right and was hating by the people who pushed yuuko down the steres, shunning and throwing rocks at her and after a while they all went mad and regreted doing what they did to yuuko and was sent to hell for what they did, then after reality kicked back in Yukariko realised what she did and what ever happened in the manga to the point where shadow yuuko was strangling Yukariko and Yukariko asked the shadow to kill her the shadow smiles and says no its not enough il make you suffer longer and your kids kids will suffer for what you did to me is unforgivable and then started the curse on Yukariko with misfortune and pain.....................

i know its a story but i swear im angry at Yukariko, only because she believed a bunch of crap what the villagers was saying.

Kanoe, Yukariko deserve no forgiveness

Guys I am new, but I just finished the anime of this wonderful story, then went and read the last 10 chapters of the manga, and boy was the manga much more graphic and sad. My questions are this, did the anime finish before the manga, since the character Asagi wasn't in the manga, and is replaced by her sister…which makes it ten times worse. I just wasn't sure if Asa-chan is an anime only character, or they just decided to not make Yukariko evil in the anime? Thanks. And seriously the grandma needs to pay was she brain washed by the villager?

Yes, the anime finished first. The manga finished a few months afterwards.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up, but what happens to Yuuko's body at the end of the manga? Did the grandma just bury it in the rubble of the old school building, or give it a funeral like in the anime?!!
