Weekly Playboy News released an interview with director Motohiro Katsuyuki and writer Urobuchi Gen about new anime Psycho-Pass. Monohiro said he didn't allow the production staff to use the word "moe" in the discussion meeting. "This anime goes against the current trend of anime industry. So it'll either be a complete failure or a great success." Urobuchi said Motohiro protects him from noitamina producer's demands to add appealing elements for female audience. Urobuchi said this anime has cruel scenes both physically and mentally. Motohiro joked that he wanted kids audience to have a trauma for life by watching this anime. Source: Shu Play News |

Reactions from anime fans in Japan that I read - The character design seems moe enough to me though - Ghost in the Shell is also moe, so what? - They seem to talk about moe from male point of view. Perhaps moe from female point of view does not count? I can see quite a lot of female appealing elements in it despite what Urobuchi said. - They want to confirm that the consumer target is the female audience? - What else do you expect from Urobuchi ? - What difference does it make? Those who want moe will find things that are moe to them. - OK, they want it to be like "quality anime"... Will it sell as poorly as those "quality anime"? |

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

thank goodness, im glad they are not poisoning it with that crap. Ive been waiting for something that "goes against the current trend of anime". It being a CyberPunk anime makes it even better. Hoping to get a similar feel from it as i did with ghost in a shell. then again there is Akane Tsunemori, she going to be no "Major" edit: ok just watched the trailer...lol, im probably only going to like Tomomi Masaoka |

Anyways, I like how they mentioned: "This anime goes against the current trend of anime industry. So it'll either be a complete failure or a great success." Pretty much saying that moe increases the chance for a anime to be more successful in this era while ones that aren't are hit or miss. |

Ive watched anime and read discussions about people going on how moe some of the characters are in them, but i don't really see any of those types of characters in ghost in the shell. Motohiro joked that he wanted kids audience to have a trauma for life by watching this anime. As the saying goes: "A mature anime for mature viewers like myself". It's not like I was going to watch this anyway so I don't mind anything. Also how the hell are they going to avoid moe, if the female lead is going to be played by KanaHana? It doesn't really make sense. |

Medaka Box isn't a shoujo-ai and doesn't try to be. For this series, I'm not expecting much of 'your definition of yaoi' to apply with the characters unless the entire main cast was mostly males or something. Otherwise, leave it to the fujoshis to do the fantasizing. |

And the hype machine keeps on churning. I'm getting really nervous about being let down. I rather just watch the series rather than keep hearing what elements it contains or doesn't contain. The noise surrounding this series since Urobuchi Gen was attached to it has been deafening. It's going to be hard to fairly critique it without going too far in either direction (AotY or Major Flop). |

It shouldn't be surprising as most of non-doujin stuff has no explicit scenes for obvious reasons and yuri lovers have to deal with shows like Rinne no Lagrange while yaoi lovers have Kuroko no Basket etc. If we wanted to stick to your terminology, there would be almost no yaoi or yuri anime outside of rare OVAs.Progeusz said: Paul said: lack of sex scenes = not implied yuri (pure love between girls) = dat be sum great logic. /sarcasm.Progeusz said: Madoka was yuri, Psycho-Pass will be yaoi. Edit: Oh, even wiki agrees: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_(genre) Since then, the meaning has drifted from its mostly pornographic connotation to describe the portrayal of intimate love, sex, or the intimate emotional connections between women. As of 2009, the term yuri is used in Japan to mean the depiction of attraction between women (whether sexual, spiritual, or romantic; explicit or implied) in manga, anime, and related entertainment media, as well as the genre of stories primarily dealing with this content. |

That'd be the internet. Words don't change their meaning, people on the internet change their meaning by using it improperly and others assume that is the correct meaning and thus use that meaning which then spreads. And there are plenty of yuri and yaoi anime. They're called hentai. Of course, just because they are one of the two doesn't mean they're required to be a hentai, it's just because both yuri and yaoi 'usually' involve more sexual/mature scenes. |

jmal said: Paul said: There's a fair difference between shoujo-ai and yuri (and shounen-ai and yaoi). Medaka Box isn't a shoujo-ai and doesn't try to be. This is a difference between Japanese and English fandom, though I think foreigners are more in line with the Japanese meaning lately. Technically, shoujo-ai is used in Japan to mean outright lolicon (shoujo = young girl, ai = love, after all), not girl-girl relationships. The distinction between "non-explicit shoujo-ai" and "explicit yuri" is really a second-hand creation of foreigners, not an original meaning in Japan. 百合 (yuri) is used in Japan to denote romantic or sexual attraction or subtext between two females, broadly. It doesn't have to be pornographic, or even explicitly canonical, so if you asked a Japanese fan Madoka would absolutely be considered (among many other things, it's important to stress!) a yuri anime. And if you search 百合 on pixiv, that's where you'll find anything from explicit pornography to girls holding hands and blushing slightly. Not so much 少女愛, which would really be supplanted by the contracted loanword ロリ or ロリコン (lolicon for lolita complex, obviously). So Progeusz basically has the right of it. I'm sure symbv would, as a Japanese person, be able to give more nuance if I glossed over anything. I guess he would be correct if he and I were going by your reasoning, though I for one, am not going by this 'Japanese and English fandom', I'm simply following the genres definition used by every anime database site. Looking up a anime with shoujo-ai as a genre won't get me some title about lolicon or non-girl on girl romance, looking up shoujo-ai as a genre will give me titles about the complete opposite, that is, girl x girl relationships. Looking up yuri will give me a list of explicit female relationship anime, in which case, are mostly hentai. |
