THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Marika's mother shows her some of her toys from her past. They have some impressive firepower.

Kane MacDougall (?) organizes a practice cruise for the space yacht club on a larger vessel that just happens to be an old pirate ship, though apparently this is known only by a select few.

Marika and Chiaki detect a cyber attack and locate the source to another ship docked at the same port as the one they are at, and Marika decides to counter-attack!

Well, Hell! I really like the way this is developing.

Oh, and I really want an ArmaLite Armor-Penetrating Beam Gun. I'm gonna ask Santa for one for Christmas.

Hell Yeah!

This was a great second episode; The scene with Marika and her mom practicing with guns was so good. I'm really interested to see what Chiaki's motives are too.

Is it just me or did he whole episode feel rather short and uneventful? :/

Her mom showing off a few guns was basically it, and awesome they might be but honestly anything that goes through plate like that is just insane to have if you board a ship in space...
As the last thing you want is holes in the hull^^

Nope you are not the only one EternalDreamer that feel like that.

A Beam gun huh?
That's a dangerous weapon lol.
But still cool.
xD

I got a feeling of the cyber attack was already plans becuase they want to test her ability.

Next episode: Counter Attack.

I'm sure they are for dealing with things other than cargo ships. When you're in a 'business' that involves potential violence, occasionally past 'customers' may have grievances and send well equipped associates to try to negotiate a better deal.

Pirates are known for illegal weapons. In space take into account that it has a more free flow feeling kind of like not being restricted by the sea. The same was though of inventing. That weapon may be just an amplified version of its original but because there are genius on the ship it's possible. This episode was key to find out of Marika’s potential such as it was with the way she was flying in the beginning.

Marika's potential has just been awaken in this episode. More than before at the very least. You all know if Marika is not soon captain...their letter shall be revoked! That's bad! Grace period can only last a certain time.

If you are concerned about the beam weapons, there should be something similar to deflector shields or anti-beam coating to protect the ship.

I must say, after the disappointment that was the 2. Symphogear ep, i expected this to have a similar drop in quality. I'm really glad it turned out exactly the opposite. The way I see it, these first two episodes lay the foundation of what could be this season's highlight.

I'm not quite sure why exactly, but everything seems to work really well together here. Each character is likeable and their interactions with each other are really fun to watch. Can't wait for the next one.

Personally I'm thinking more along the lines of current military grade armored vehicles or even armored soldiers that pirates forced to fight off ship might have to face. I don't know much about the story background, but I would think that the tank Marika holed was probably an antique. Just consider the weapons of today compared to the best of WWII - the long 88mm of the German King Tiger wouldn't even make an impression on the front of an M1 Abrams with that depleted uranium armor, while the 'silver bullet' of the Abrams would probably go through two or three king tigers lined up in a row.

That seemed pretty cool. Cant wait for when we actually get the characters doing pirate stuff.

Chiaki keeping onto the banana parfait in the beginning was cool and working together with Marika was nice.

The other thing to note about carrying around 'heavy' weapons like that is just as Marika's mother stated - it's about impressions. When boarding a ship, you don't really want to have to fight. If your target's crew gets the impression you are ready, willing, and able to cut their ship apart, with them in it, they are far more likely to surrender without a fight.

A little research into the history of piracy in the real world bears this out. Some of the most famous pirate captains appear to have rarely had to fight to take their prizes. In particular, Blackbeard was killed in what apparently was the only ship to ship engagement he participated in as captain. His reputation for ruthless slaughter prompted every (non-military) ship he met to surrender without a fight, and he put the captured crews on shore.

Actually, there are other ship to ship fights that have occured aside from Blackbeard, there is also Blackbard who also engages in a ship to ship battle. Though actually it more of a shooting match than a ship to ship encounter.

Well aren't we off to a slow start here? The first episode made me think they would, after all that attempt kidnapping stuff, rush things over to get her accepting being the captain already so we could skip to the good stuff. But nothing like that in this epi, and the preview made it look like we will still be having few things happening for a while...

Yes, I suppose every teenager who has lived a sheltered life should be able to immediately adjust to the idea that her parents were engaged in what she would consider violent crime and that unsavory people of all types would be out to get her simply because she has become the inheritor of a role she had no idea even existed the day before.

(guess I'm chatty today...) Here is my take on that. Put one's self in the place of the officers of the Benten Maru. To keep your 'job' you need to get your former captain's teenage daughter to take over so the government continues to recognize your charter, but she's almost a complete unknown. Sure, she can fly, but you need to know if you can depend upon her in a crisis, life or death situation - does she have what it takes to learn to be captain?

Also, apparently, they need more than just her. Some of the crew must have bailed after the former captain died. It seems that Marika has a group of friends, all of whom have flying experience and with some in particular with some very interesting skills. It would be worth while maybe to see if they can work together as a group and solve some challenges. Then, having laid the groundwork and with the right pushing it might be possible to get some of the better ones to sign up to serve under their friend.

I actually like this way better than if Marika and half a dozen of her friends took 2 minutes to decided that the life of a pirate was what they all wanted to have. It may seem a little slow, but I personally like character and story development and this is working for me.

She seems more gifted than dumb at the moment, clearly. A bit of a rough diamond that will probably grow as a great pirate captain (well, isn't it her role really ?).

She's not supposed to be some cold-blooded, high-skilled, expert assassin. She's just, you know, NORMAL. Compared to most main characters is recent anime though she's a certifiable genius.

I like that the story doesn't just throw viewers into a story that's already going 100 MPH with no idea of who anyone is or what the random, German-sounding terms they're throwing around mean. Sometimes it's good to have a show that starts slow and builds up momentum by crafting a world and introducing/fleshing-out its cast.

This show is really fun I think. The characters, their interactions and the animation are all a pleasure to watch and I think the pacing is perfect. It's just enough to keep me sticking around without getting bored out of my mind or getting lost in all the technobabble and blinking lights. It's the perfect mix of exposition regarding the ways of the early SPACEPIRATES and action scenes so far, and I can definitely see myself enjoying what this series has to offer immensely further on. It has plenty of promise I think, and is easily my favourite show of the season. I'm so glad this is getting 26 episodes.

Well, normally I'd be pissed that the plot hasn't picked up after 2 episodes, but this is a 26-or-so-episode anime so I can forgive. For now. But the promise of piratey antics better not fall short.

Wow actual quality character development in an anime. Sure, it may not have been too eventful. but this is already slated for 25 episodes. I rather have slower good storytelling episodes like this one instead of useless filler episodes of them at the beach later on.

On a side note, I'm nicknaming Chiaka, "Kuromeganekko". Since Kana is the voice actor and she's using the same tone as she did with Ruri/Kuroneko from Oreimo.

viewers nowadays don't know how a good story is told. they just need their "UBERCOOL main character, " "illogical plot twists" and "adrenaline-pumping DUMB action scenes" and then the series is already an "amazing" show in their eyes, what a waste of brain

this show is really doing a good job when it comes to developing the story and characters.. and are taking their time to do so since it's a 26-episode anime anyway.. heck, slow starting shows like these are usually the ones that are gonna be worthwhile watching later on.. this can turn out to be a legitimate space opera..

btw, i'm glad that despite the Miniskirts (even the title has it) in zero gravity, they did not capitalize them for fanservice.. i mean, they're roaming around, sometimes vertically, in zero g and they won't mind whether their skirts are flipping and/or their pantsu are showing.. but thankfully, they magically just don't.. and that made the show flow seamlessly without most of us noticing.. this is serious space navigation that we should be focusing on..

When she started tracing who was trying to attack them the list that was shown seemed interesting.
The cargo ships where named after Japanese gods the passenger ships where named after Greek gods and the war ships where named after country's i noticed because one of them was named after the country i am from.
The ship that attacked them was named after a element so was standing out besides the fact that it had a huge antenna sticking out.
Also how did the school manage to get one of the original privateer vessels.
It's a strange coincidence and somehow very interesting.

Also a mother taking her daughter out at night to show her the power of holding a weapon tho it seemed irresponsible considering the situation Marika is in it didn't seem like a strange choice.
It did teach her some responsibility.
What i am wondering about tho is why Marika addresses her mother by her first name and not by mother or mom it just seems like a unusual relationship.
And i also wonder what Ririka thinks of her deceased husband since it looks like she doesn't seem to care much that he is death not to mention the fact that her daughter has never met him.

Bah the way I see it, the "haters" are the people who just want to see action, whereas the rest of us who are enjoying it are enjoying the fact that they're actually TELLING A STORY.

I swear there were craploads of people hating on Majikoi when the first episode was all action without any of this buildup, and now people are complaining about the buildup.

Though I also like the fact that this show is teaching me things as well, and not only from the show, but from the various discussions about pirates that people have here and there. Before last week, I had no idea what a Letter of Marque is nor what Blackbeard was really like.

Tonight... we are young... so let's set the world on fire, we can burn brighter, than the sun...
