I haven't seen the old anime, but I received the first Anne of Green Gables book for my 10th birthday from my mother (who read the series when she was a kid.) It was one of my favourite childhood books, so I've been super excited for this anime for a while now.

So far it's looking like a faithful adaption (which is much more than can be said for a lot of modern AoGG adaptions), albeit a bit fast-paced. I especially love the Ghibli-esque style and how almost all of the subtitle translations are direct quotes from the book.

Has anyone else here read any of the original books? What do you think of this adaption? If you haven't read them, would you want to?

We had to read it back in primary school for English class. However, I never completed it. Watched the film, though.

It was part of my curriculum back in elementary school, so I kinda had no choice.
My memory is kinda fragmented now, but I can tell that it aged very well.

I read the whole series as a kiddo, it was one of my favorites back then. I'm watching this anime together with my best friend who also loved the books as a kid and it feels so crazy nostalgic to watch it now. The adaptation is great and faithful so far, and I love it sm, but I feel like imma cry hard when this one particular scene takes place omg

when I was little, my grandmother read the book to me before bedtime. About 30 years later, I reread them. I also read the Manga Adaptation that came out and watched the anime that came out in the 70s.

The last year I bought the first three books. This adaptation is kinda modern oriented to attract more people which isnt bad at all but... it doesnt really feel like Anne is Anne. Its lacking the charm of the original Anne and skips some details that makes you get more into the story. Still is better than other reimagined Anne versions that insult the books.

I watched the Netflix series a few years ago, I don't remember much. I've already seen the old anime but I was a kid at the time so I don't remember much. I thought the adaptation was great, perfect, really. The animation is clean and smooth, the colors are vibrant, and the pacing is great. Loving this adaptation so far

Yes, I read the first book, and I'm reading now again, thankfully to this new anime.
I know they skip a lot things, but the essential of the story it's still there, in my opinion.
Although I really hope they don't skip the most important parts of the books, 'cause there's so many important things in this story...

I did read the first one, countless times, and I love it! I love the old anime adaptation, I saw it multiple times too, and I think it's more faithful to the original source, but the new one is beautiful too, with its beautiful artwork and OST and breathtaking landscapes and scenarios.

I've read it (and the sequels), but that was many years ago. I only remember a few main events and not much else. After the first episode I'm satisfied and want more. There's a magic of nostalgia here.

I definitely recommend checking out the older anime when this is finished. It was directed by Isao Takahata of studio Ghibli (Miyazaki worked on it too) and has a much slower pacing.

I am loving the vibrant and lively direction of this adaptation though

I read the whole series.

I get the feeling that they want to make this series all "feel good". With these 2 episodes that I watched they removed 99% of the drama and depression from the original anime and the book, but I wonder if is mostly because of the faster pace or not.
Seems like the inverse of the Netflix adaptation Anne with an E where they delved into that.

If this is really what they want to do than I'll be a bit disappointed, even if they adapt beyond the first book.
Second book in the series is pure garbage, third is also not that good.
In the beginning of the series the books had where all bright and positive like that, but with time and the years author changed. The world changed. The last chronological book was written during World War 1 and I recommend picking and reading that book as an stand alone. It shows how it was for canadians during the war, is a fantastical historical record, and as you can imagine the tone changed.

After that author wrote others books covering periods of Anne's life she had skipped and things got dark.
How dark? There's cannibalism (but I would explain to you how), can you even imagine that in this series?

For me it got supper interesting, I wish this anime or any adaptation would cover those books.
Sadly that The Great War 100th anniversary already passed years ago and no one had the idea of money to adapt that book.

I agree with what is being said about the fast-paced nature of the anime. The series indicates there will be 24 episodes and it is a 38-chapter book. I felt that the first episode was very rushed and covered six chapters of the book. It was disappointing in that the decision to keep Anne there is an important one and it was a missed opportunity for the anime to inject drama and emotion into the series. With the face-paced nature, I figured they would adapt more than one book. However, all the news I have read thus far says they are adapting "Anne of Green Gables." I agree that the rushed nature does take away from emotion and conflict that could have made the anime more deep.

I've watched the Netflix series and read the first volume (still has to read the others!)

I really like the adaptation, my only complaint would be the pacing which is a bit fast but I don't mind it that much

I've read (and loved)Anne of Green Gables and the rest of the series. This new anime seems to be pretty faithful so far but tbh I'd still recommend the 79 anime over this one. The reason being that show has a dub, and listening to Canadians speaking Japanese just feels wrong.

This is also only a 2 cour anime where the 79 version had 50 episodes. I really don't see how the entire book can be adapted in less than say 36 or 40 episodes without cutting or speeding over some parts.

Yep, I just read the book a year or two ago, and I've read four or five of the sequels since.

As far as the quality of the adaptation: it's difficult to determine so early, but so far things are great, in my opinion. They've depicted quite well all three of the main characters' (Anne, Matthew, and Marilla) personalities. And the beautiful, colorful, and painterly art style is a wonderful fit for a show about the incredibly imaginative and vivacious Anne. The only thing that I'm not quite used to yet is the Japanese dialogue, but I think the voice actors have done a great job thus far. And like others have mentioned, the translator is doing a fantastic job in not merely translating, but using text from the book, where appropriate.

I'm also getting used to Anne's goofy centimeter-long bangs, but at her age, they just add to her charm :P

The only thing that still concerns me is that there's a lot of religious talk in the books. Some of it is harmless and nigh inevitable in 19th century Canada, but there's also a large minority of typical Christian intolerance throughout the books; I really hope this adaptation at least tones down some of it. I don't think they'll eliminate all of it, but they could clean up some of the nastier stuff, hopefully

Take this with a grain of salt as this is just a light impression. I read the first main/original book of the series in childhood along with so many other books in that period when I was in school which were targeted toward and deemed appropriate for kids/families/all ages. That read came as one of the many books read over different summer vacations as part of school summer reading programs.

I've also seen the original 1979 anime series in full once in 2019, a few months after I joined MAL, rewatched various episodes and scenes from it in the years since, and it's one of my small minority of 9/10-rated tier of anime and in my overall Top 20. A lot of people who are more aware of him now from his films and association with Ghibli fame don't know or wouldn't expect Takahata to have directed an anime TV series, but it's really a masterwork from him I consider on the same level as and only comparable to Kaguya-hime no Monogatari, my favorite film from him and second favorite from the studio. I obviously didn't exist and live in either period and location to verify firsthand, but I get the impression that at least to the best of his ability and keeping with the novel and historical knowledge for accuracy's sake, he transmitted the feel and spirit of the rural Canadian Maritimes of the 1880s to life and the screen in Akage no Anne with the same love and care he did the mists of mythological Japan in Kaguya and that is so special and important.

I've said several times and it remains the case that I don't intend to watch the remake just because I never watch remakes of series or films which I've already seen a prior and/or the first iteration of and am least reasonably satisfied with; nevermind when they're already excellent. But today I checked out a few scenes from the first episode just to quickly get a feel for it and have a frame of reference to see what people were referring to in some of these thread topics I've read through.

My impression is that it has good production values, will likely be successful and popular enough (at least for the Japanese market/audience) just on the association and name recognition alone, and is probably also a good and sound option if you haven't already seen the original anime series, don't plan to see it in the foreseeable future, and don't care about it. As well as not caring about pacing (i.e. much inevitable rushing). And is probably destined to be better than a lot of other newly released anime. Like, better this than another JRPG power fantasy otaku NEET isekai harem.

But it's probably also the case that it won't hold a candle to the original anime series and will in no way be a substitute or replacement for it to those who've seen and appreciate its beauty.

I've read an extremely-abridged picture book version when I was a kid. And it wasn't in English. Haven't read the full novel, unfortunately.

Some of the events in the first 3 episodes do ring a bell, but only vaguely.

I swear I've seen some live-action adaptation of this, but it's impossible to say, since there are so many of them, and they all blend together with other children's classics like The Little Princess, Little Women and The Secret Garden...

I read the book and I love it. The old anime is an incredibly accurate adaptation of it so I can't imagine this new anime being any better. Seems like a really pointless remake.

It's my favorite book with anne being my favorite protagonist. I think only the 1st episode was way too fast but they just wanted to get rid of the introductions I assume. Ep 2 and 3 are paced pretty good.
