This has a slightly darker tone compared to the main show's first episode imo.

Quirks are still the talk of the episode while there's villains roaming around. Kouichi is the main star of this story and I do find his personality interesting so far. For a spinoff/prequel, it can definitely make an identity of its own. Kouichi has a lot of character story to tell about his role as a vigilante here. Plus, I like the overall more mature tone. Dunno how how many episodes this will get but I wouldn't be surprised if they try to adapt as many as episodes as possible.

I didn’t check the trailers, so that is why, but yeah, the VA of our main guy sounds sooooo fucking similar to Deku lmaooo. But yeah, nothing to get surprised over, I mean this is a spin-off in the end and in the same world as well, so of course, leave the same kind of monologues, we’ve the same characters making presence too. Very thankful the guy has a quirk this time, however ordinary it may be, and is actually not aiming to be at the top of the world, just because he can think. I mean the guy is actually doing THINGS rather than just talking… again, however ordinary and dumb it may look to others, and I RESPECT that.

Those jerks really did play the part of your jobbers didn’t they, and quite well, if I’m being honest. Seriously, back then you had Deku meet All Might, and here, the guy met Knuckleduster. I’m actually impressed with how they handled the stuff though, I mean having the guy do the hero stuff completely would’ve felt really stale, right? So yeah, if anything, I’m glad it’s not just the main guy, but we gave people around him the kind of screen-time they should get as well. Keeping that cliffhanger aside, really, the visuals are TOP-NOTCH. Adds a bit more to the overall course of things and yeah, neat first episode overall.

Won’t joke that this is already better than MHA, I mean bad joke first of all, and then it’s only the first episode, but yeah, I’m hoping for better things from this one.

Ever wondered how TOHO was planning to milk this franchise, especially with the main series ending later this year? Well, look no further than this, a spinoff of the main series… that, according to manga readers, is actually a lot better than the main series. Which is nice to know, even if I’ve kinda enjoyed the last two installments of the original.

So then, what’s even the premise here? Well, I mean, it’s right there in the title—Vigilantes. Or as they call them in this world, “illegal heroes.” Right off the bat, I like that this isn’t one of those spinoffs that just slap the main series name on it for exposure and then barely relate to the original. This one actually uses the world of the main series as its core and, from what manga readers say, does it way better and more interestingly right from the start.

One of my biggest issues with the main series is how, after a certain point, the students just start feeling like glorified cops or something. But here? Considering they're illegal heroes, they can’t really be that now, can they.

Love the characters so far a lot as well, like Crawler’s got pretty chill expectations. Like when Popstep gets attacked, he doesn’t freak out or wait for All Might to magically show up, he knows even the #1 Hero isn’t some all-seeing, all-doing dude. Crawler and Knuckleduster already remind me of All Might and Deku, makes sense. All Might gave Deku One For All ‘cause his body just moved to help someone without thinking, same vibes with Crawler here. Honestly, I’m really into how this show shows off the whole “regular quirk” side of things. Not like Deku crying in middle school or being the big U.A. guy at the top. Crawler’s just like… in the middle, doing his thing. It’s cool. And yeah, I expected cameos of the other heroes here ofc, but damn, some of them already are running into our "heroes" here I didn't expect, that cliffhanger with Aizawa having Knuckleduster caught like.

Damn, I didn’t expect to like this so much, what the hell man... I’m already loving it way more than the main series. Whether it's the characters, the premise, or even the visuals... THE VISUALS MAN, because I KNOW that wasn’t AN ACTUAL good looking sky that isn't the same ugly blue sky from the main show I saw there, right???

You know what TOHO, go ahead and milk this all you want, because if we keep up the same pace as this episode, then hell, I'm all in. Really loved the OP as well, loved so many things already about this.

While we wait for the final season of Boku no Hero Academia a.k.a My Hero Academia to arrive this Fall, let's take a gander at the prequel that started it all: the spin-off that is mangaka Hideyuki Furuhashi's MHA: Vigilantes, the adaptation of the canon work in almost a decade.

Kocchi no Kento's OP is rather poppy, same with yutori's ED.

The town of Naruhata where the Izuku Midoriya-ish protagonist of 19-year-old Hitonami University student Koichi Haimawari with his cockroach-speed Slide and Glide Quirk, coincidentally meeting the rather popular self-proclaimed freelance idol of Kazuho Haneyama (hero name Pop☆Step), though getting hammered in the gang that he low-key insulted, it ticks him to embody his All Might cosplay and help people around as Nice Guy. Of course, Pop☆Step is there to greet him, though the same gang that coms thereafter doesn't care much about him, much less his Quirk being much useless against either one of the trio.

But it's the arrival of All Might...or rather, the wannabe caricature of Knuckleduster taking out the gang and doing his own checks. For sure, Knuckleduster is the Vigilante illegal hero, but it's Koichi who plucks his courage to stand up against the leader of the gang, that gets admiration from the All Might wannabe to commit to hero work. Knuckleduster's extensive work to scout out the illegal Trigger drug that turns people into villains (that's why he was checking on the discolouration of the tongues), but there's no time to waste dealing with junkies and dealers on the loose.

Knuckleduster even dealing his "justice" against ordinary people, prompting Eraser Head Aizawa to stop him, will these illegal heroes be worse than regular villains?

The Spiderman: Into the Verse comic style works very well here. Regardless, this will be a great stopgap before the final season, and a complete adaptation (if Bones under their Bones Film division is willing to take it all the way).

Loved the art style and the effects—most of all, I loved Pop☆Step. She just looks hot in that dress/costume of hers.

Kouichi’s someone inspired by everyone’s favorite hero, All Might, and he’s already recognized by the locals as a sort of hero with the name “Nice Guy.” While helping people out, he even helped Midoriya’s mom too.

Knuckleduster’s reason is admirable, but his actions are pretty reckless and dangerous for an ordinary person.

The story follows the familiar theme of heroes vs. villains, but this time it’s different—no more kids, just grown-ass people in action. I’m really pumped for the next episode, especially to see those bad guys get manhandled by Knuckleduster again.

I've been requesting Vigilante anime for years in here and here even though people are saying it's not gonna be as fun as the main series. But I think another perspective of the society of hero is always welcome.

It's hard to find high profile voice actors who're still not in the part of MHA but Vigilante manage to find them. Shūichirō Umeda which voice Nice Guy and Ikumi Hasegawa which voice Pop Step. Yasuhiro Mamiya which voice Knuckleduster already played Gigantomachia from the main series.

Yeah, It's living up to my hype. Art style is great, Knuckle Duster and Pop Step are already some of my favorite my hero verse characters, OP was really nice, and the ending was a good way to hook people (I haven't read the manga but I'm getting the vibe Knuckle Duster might be quirkless which makes him interesting going up against Aizawa)

Overall, I'm just excited about new my hero content ^^ Always been my favorite shounen, and I think this is a great expansion of the lore

I'll rewatch later with Subs, didn't expect the VA for Koichi to sound so similar to Deku. Also it seems like the S/A scene might have been toned down a bit but I'd have to ask a manga reader.

Eitherway, really engaging start, I hope Bones cooks for season 8 just as hard.

This feels grounded than MHA. the crooks wanna strip the girl and the unlicensed dude is profiling and paranoid. yall saying this is from a different author? you can already get a feel for it lol.

i didn't expect that kind of feel and makes me even more interested than i thought i would be.

animation is on par with the modern BONES, very mechanically correct frames, close ups and nothing that should stand out unless its their favorite people doing the sequence. YAIBA this season just feels like something I would've expected from BONES back then but not anymore. I never expected this turnaround after WIT's decision to drop AOT

@Stark700 it is confirmed to have a 2 split cour season, but this will only adapt about half of the manga. Looking at how mha is still one of the most popular battle shonens of the decade, and hoe vigilante is generally well regarded, I would be surprised if there won't be a second season to have a complete adaptation

I never got around to reading the Vigilantes manga, so it's nice to see it getting an anime adaptation. First impressions are pretty good, I like the main trio so far and it was cool to see some familiar faces like All Might and Aizawa. If this can at least match the quality of MHA's earlier seasons then this should prove to be an enjoyable watch for me.

The girl's character design is so ass even though she is one of the main character lol. I already dropped the main series, when s5 was airing and I'm have no plans of continuing it ever again. But I heard this spinoff is better and since the writer is also different, I have somewhat high hopes.

A very interesting start to this new perspective of My Hero Academia! A few years before the main story, following a college aged student this time named Koichi. Who, unlike Deku, has a quirk, it's just not a very heroic or useful one. His sliding power is cool but the slowness of bike speed limits its effectiveness. Koichi doesn't seem that down about it, kinda just found his place and accepted it. Not good enough to be a hero or get a license. So he's just trying to live a normal life.

At least he wanted to. But sometimes extraordinary circumstances fall into our laps. Or we crash into them in Koichi case. Bumping into that spike guy caused much more to happen than just being harassed by some thugs. Without that Knuckleduster wouldn't have found him later during the second meeting. His sense of justice is really strong, albeit a bit unhinged. He's basically the definition of a loose cannon.

Koichi is smart to stick by Knuckleduster. Not just to keep an eye on his aggressiveness with strangers but this is genuinely a great growth opportunity for Koichi. He stepped up trying to save Pop Step, who is also very cute and fun, so he's shown potential. Koichi just needs to get some experience being a hero and he'll feel more confident he can actually do it. I'm excited to see these vigilantes adventures!

Kouichi's slide and glide quirk is not as useless as he think it is and it would be more effective if he used his feet to move around rather than going on all fours. Although it is not as fast Kouichi should be fast enough to dodge or run away from normal attacks giving the slide and glide quirk more meaning. Knuckleduster seems to be the more unhinged one in his pursuit of the dealer handing out the Trigger drug to low life villains. Not sure what Pop Step's quick besides her idol gimmick. Looks like we run into our old friend Eraser.

A slightly darker tone than My Hero Academia in which non heroes go after petty criminals. I also like the comic visuals and sound effects.

This was a promising start of MHA Vigilantes. It's nice to see a bit of a darker theme with what the petty villains wanted, which does make for a nice change of pace.

I can't blame Kouichi for feeling frustrated for feeling a bit powerless with how he doesn't like his quirk, but I do like how he does his best in doing good deeds, which does get praise from the public. As for the other two characters, both have their interesting sides. Pop Step looks pretty hot in that outfit of hers and I enjoyed the little street concert she performed while bouncing between one lamppost to another.

Knuckleduster simply lets his fists do the talking for him and it came in handy when the pathetic trio of villains had Kouichi and Pop Step in a bind. He's a little chaotic, but his reasoning for wanting to do what he can to stop villains makes sense. It's going to take everything from both Kouichi and Pop Step to make sure that Knuckleduster doesn't do anything too reckless, which is far easier said than done.

The visuals look pretty nice. I do like how they include visual sound effects, from attacks to simply eating or drinking. It's a nice touch. The animation is pretty good, too, so I hope that stays consistent for as long as possible.

And here we go... Before the final season of My Hero Academia, we’re getting this prequel spin-off that a lot of people say is actually really good. I had heard about it before but never really looked into the manga. From what I’ve heard, though, it connects to and explains a lot of things from the main series. Chronologically, Vigilantes takes place about 5 years before season 1 — or actually, 6 years before Deku enters UA, since he spent a whole year doing All Might’s special training at the start of the series.

I did not expect the dub and sub to come out at the same time, but I’m glad (I generally don’t watch Sub). I really like the comic effects they have, with the sound effects and the imagery. It really gives the impression that this series is more of the classic vigilante story of a group of people working from the shadows to take down crime where the heroes and cops can’t (like Spider-Man).

Koichi Haimawari and Izuku Midoriya would definitely get along given how they’re both All Might fans. Then again, Sir Nighteye really resented Izuku Midoriya (primarily due to home wanting Mirio to have gotten OFA due to his desire to allow somebody to replace All Might as the next Symbol of Peace so that All Might doesn’t die a gruesome death like in his vision).

I’m shocked that for the entire episode, these three nobodies were the main antagonists here, and they’re gonna be more relevant in the next episode. I respect Koichi for standing up to them when they were assault Pop Step, and Knuckleduster had quite the entrance. I wonder what his quirk is (if he even has one), but regardless, he can kick some ass. Not only that, but he saw the inner hero within Koichi, and Koichi realized that like Deku, he can’t stand by when somebody is in danger no matter the cost. Koichi had the same moment that Deku had when he ran in against the Sludge Villain to save Kacchan. In fact both scenarios are similar because the heroes finished the job.

Then despite Koichi rejecting Knuckleduster’s proposition, the dude still hangs around. I wonder how Koichi got the two cans of beer given that he’s 19, so he legally shouldn’t be able to purchase it.

Lastly, I understand why Aizawa assumed that Knuckleduster is a villain, given that he just ran up on a random dude in a suit and called him suspicious because he has dolls of All Might, Endeavor, and 13. Something tells me that despite that, he’s right about the guy. Regardless, it seems that Koichi, Knuckleduster, and Pop Step will have to clear things up with Eraserhead before they can do anything else.

So Trigger is something that’s been in the scenes since before Season 4, where Suneater, Red Riot, and Fat Gum ran into it (also Froppy and Uravity ran into it in Season 5). Obviously given what happens in the main series, Knuckleduster, The Crawler, and Pop Step don’t stomp it out.

I’m excited to see how this series will go!

@Mari_Marx Deku spent 10 months doing All Might's training, not a full year.

Two, I was also wondering if that was Inko Midoriya. It could be someone that looks extremely similar though.

Three, what evidence do you have to suggest this series takes place 5 years before Season 1?

@AddaeAkono Pop Step has a leaping quirk, hence why Koichi talks about how he envies that he doesn't have such an ability. Also for Koichi's quirk to be able to activate, he needs at least THREE points of contact. His feet are two, meaning he needs at least one more beyond that, hence why he tends to go on all fours.

I already love Koichi more than Deku. I love the art style, and the art direction is insanely well done. Pop Step is my favourite out of the trio right now.
@Gekko_ua Why do you like Koichi Haimawari over Izuku Midoriya?
