@MegamiRem yes I don't think it was said before but if it is that, then wow what a complicated family tree.
@WaterMage It´s not said but hinted, if I remember right maomao was surprised to see an old lady servant (Suiren) serving under Jinshi, specially since it´s uncommon, most of them retire after reaching a certain age, only a very few actually stay in the inner palace due to their high status. |

Another great episode, the only thing I would say that´s annoying is the complicated blood lines and politics behind them. I had to spend a good 30 minutes researching to know who is who´s child, since it´s been a while since I watched S1 and I´ve forgotten a couple of things.
If anyone is having the same issue I made a couple of bullet points explaining in detail (This is a recopilation of whats known so far in the events up to this episode):
- So "Anshi" (empress dowager) was the legal wife of the "late emperor" and gave birth to two children. Child one is the "current emperor" and child two is "name unknown" (Deceased due to the honey incident).
- The "current emperor" got concubine "Ah-duo" pregnant and gave birth to "Jinshi" which is the emperor´s first and eldest child.
- Both "Ah-duo" and "Anshi" decided to swap babies thinking their respective child´s would live a better life with the other. Very few individuals know the truth.
- Ah-duo´s reason to swap her son "Jinshi" was to ensure he wouldn´t be in danger from political plots, therefore allowing "Anshi" to raise him, he would receive a more secure status and better protection.
- Anshi´s reason was that she feared her son wouldn´t be treated well and the care needed, given his lower status compared to the "current emperor", therefore by placing him with "Ah-duo" he would have a better chance at life.
- Due to the "honey incident" back in S1, "Anshi´s" biological child under the care of "Ah-duo" died, while "Ah-duo´s" child (Jinshi) under the care of "Anshi" was unaffected.
- During this time several servants and doctors were either executed or exiled, which was the case of maomao´s adoptive father.
- Something important to note is that "Suiren" (Jinshi´s attendant) is actually "Ah-duo´s" mother therefore "Jinshi´s" maternal grandmother.
I hope this helps :-)

I like how in this shows we get so many hints as to the lore of the characters, while it also isn't blatantly told to us, allowing us to piece it together. The late emperor being scared of women and looking up to his mummy is crazy. |

Is it bad that I feel bad for the late emperor? He clearly wasn't fit for the role of emperor, having what looks to be trauma impacting his ability to socialise with anyone other than kids... Because as emperor he had to extend the bloodline, and we learn that his 'preference for young girls' wasn't a choice but all he knew to talk to, it endangered the livelihoods of the young concubines and himself.. It's actually so so tragic to everyone involved, and painting was the only normal way he could indulge himself without harming others. His actions against the young concubines and negligence for his country was unforgivable. But it is super interesting seeing how these actions formed. |

The girl in the painting is probably her at least that's my speculation. Speaking about about speculation we are getting more and more hinds about who Jinshi might really be. Most likely that child the late emperor had with her, they’ve been hinting at it for a while, but this seems like a confirmation. Calling him the child of immorality or smth I forgot and saying she watched him for a very long time |

The palace intrigue was on 1000 this episode. I enjoyed how they tied up what we saw at the beginning of the last episode. The king poisoned himself and his mother knew it was happening, this episode was deep. It was cool seeing Jinshi interact with his grandmother, she looks very young for her age. |

The late emperor's story was an interesting one, but not one without darkness... Again, a lot of lore has been dropped in this episode, which does lead me to be a little lost on the dynamics between the characters, but I'm sure we'll find out more with time. Jinshi's relationship with Anshi remains to be seen, but there's definitely something significant there. We also got to know more about the late emperor, and judging from his issues, I think it was easy to tell why he wasn't liked. Maomao found some things out, like his paintings, but she didn't really dig deep into his story, which honestly, was probably for the better. I wouldn't say this was an episode I was thoroughly engaged in, but it was an important one nonetheless. |

Wait...so "couch" is just pronounced "couch" in Japanese? I would have assumed they had their own translated name for it. I was curious about the toxic orpiment pigment being on par with arsenic...had no idea it was so widely used all over the world back in the day, and occasionally still to this day despite the extremely toxic and deadly nature of the mineral. Pretty surprising to hear that Lady Anshi knew her father's plans from the very start, and that she herself admitted to having "eyes full of ambition" at her young age. Although I wonder if she also knew about the whole thing about assassination plots on her life as a member of the royal family being a regular occurrence that can and will happen at any time. And afterwards, it was her that "tormented" him which resulted in her conceiving her second child, "the prince brother" to the current emperor, to the point she mentally broke his mind which was probably already broken from the start...some women in this series are scarier than I thought. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. I'm not surprised she consolidated so much power as empress dowager, being able to implement reforms like banning on slavery or new eunuchs, after what happened to her first birth carried out via c-section by Luomen who was likely forcibly castrated. As messed up the former emperor was in the head with his "preferences", I think that he did love Lady Anshi to an extent after all, as she was shown to have worn yellow a lot. The woman on the wall painting may have been her as he imagined her grown up. It was quite unlikely the wall painting woman was the former empress because they didn't show her wearing any yellow dresses as far as I remember in the flashbacks, and usually showed her as a very senior old woman with white hair...unless there were multiple layers on different paintings behind the first one as Maomao guessed from the touching the soft papery wallpapers. It's nice that Lady Anshi finally has the closure she needed though. Next week, we get to see 3 very similar looking...sisters? And a ghost story...spooky. |

@killjoy_26 Thanks, no problem!. It gets hinted but not actually stated, some of the interactions suggest familiarity and deeper connection between the characters, but it flies under the radar until you actually find out they are related and then you can piece it all together. It´s kinda annoying that nothing ever gets officially revealed/stated, since most of it are theories from what maomao can piece together and actually turn out to be reality, but she chooses to just leave it at that rather than getting involve in unnecessary plots/politics. |

Anshi really appeared stunning, albeit in slightly different ways, both then and now. It's easy to see how the former emperor could have fallen in love at first sight with her then, but then tragic to see how thoroughly she was discarded afterward. The late emperor wanted to live in a bubble frozen in time, but the problem was that nature and biology weren't going to cooperate and no one can escape the aging process - not his beloved Anshi, not himself, not anyone. And then to go as far as she did to exact her revenge. But I can't blame her. Or him. Can only really feel a profound sense of loss and sadness for them both and wishing it had all somehow turned out differently. So, what is the story seeking to tell us about his character? He had a case of arrested development/developmental disorder. Some psychological complex imbuing an entrenched fear of women, due to his mother? But I'm wondering if there was one specific inciting incident which could be pinpointed and how he'd be classified in terms of neurological profile in a modern clinical sense. |

I was close in thinking it was formaldehyde or lead in the paint and I did consider toxic pigments but didn't think of what one since there are so many. I noticed a lot of people here misinterpreted this form not paying attention and poor media literacy. Anshi was brought to the palace by her father likely for the security for their family and Anshi used this to her advantage to pursue her ambitions (whatever those are) and approach the emperor trying to gain his favor. Anshi later hated the emperor because she loves him and she felt used thinking he forgot about her since she was kind of abandoned, however the dialogue between her and Jinshi and the monologue she had suggests the painting to be of not the empress but of Anshi unbeknownst to her blinded by her rage. So the emperor did not ever forget about her and this suggests he actually cared about her just he is deathly terrified of women for whatever reason as if he has PTSD so he was unable to be near her. I wonder why that is, what happened to him. Anyway his extreme phobia of women is why he wound up with younger girls, not because he's some perv but likely out of loneliness from isolation from his fragile mind and because of what is expected of him to produce heirs likely by his mother. It's understandable why Anshi feels the way she does but she also is not seeing things for what they really are. In fact it took me a while to realize this but Maomao suggested there may be many painting under the one shown and the late emperor died because of the use of yellow, this may imply he was painting Anshi over and over. She does still have some warm feelings for the late emperor, you see this in how she saw the likeness between him and Jinshi she reacted positively not negatively to that, plus she did feel bad about his death feeling like she cursed him up until this point. Hopefully she gets to know the truth some time so her anger doesn't consume her. WatchTillTandava said: Anshi really appeared stunning, albeit in slightly different ways, both then and now. I am not sure I'd go as far as say discarded because she was kept at the palace so she was still being cared for and allowed to live a high society life. I'm not sure what I'd call it to be ghosted like that, maybe neglected but even that is slightly off. It's hard to find words for it other than she was hurt and it's more just a tragic situation for both of them. I was getting an impression of PTSD from him. He did not seem afraid of the aging of men or himself. |

People in this section need to stop defending the pedophile. Just because the dude wasn’t fit to be emperor and was called an idiot is no excuse. Also, the people saying Anshi was using him or planned it from the beginning is ridiculous. She was a child. Regardless of her intention, it’s rape at that age. It clearly has caused her trauma for the rest of her life. This is not a lolicon show, it is depicting the terror of child rape. If watching this episode does not make you disgusted with how predators take advantage of young girls, causing them to create a further cycle of violence, you need to rewatch the episode. |

This was a fantastic episode. It helped clarify a lot of things that were previously hinted at or shown, but not told. It surprised me that the young Anshi wasn't simply sold off and taken advantage of by the previous emperor, but, through her father's plan, actually intentionally put herself in a position to have his child, knowing what she was doing. Not that a child her age could truly know what she was doing. Giving birth to the current emperor at such a young age, and the process that allowed that must have been really traumatizing for her, whether she realized it or not. That probably played a part in her deciding to torment and rape the previous emperor for leaving her behind when she grew "too old" for him. Getting pregnant from that, it's no wonder she was so willing to swap her second son with Ah Duo for her grandson. I also caught that the woman who gave birth to a daughter was said to have been knocked up by a doctor (leading to the castration of doctors) and has remained in the rear palace ever since. I'm betting that's Suiren. I remember them mentioning in S1 that she had a daughter, and that Ah Duo was the child of a doctor, so Ah Duo being Suiren's daughter would make sense. This show just loves dropping subtle, seemingly insignificant little hints that pay off unexpectedly if you're paying attention. It was cool to see that Anshi realizes Jinshi's got a thing for Maomao and seems to fully approve. It seems like everybody ships them except for Lakan and Maomao herself (for now, I'm sure). Next week looks really interesting. I'm excited for more Shisui. She's so cute, but there's definitely more to her than meets the eye. |

Wow, I thought the Empress Dowager's VA was Saori Hayami... adult version sounds like Fubuki from OPM, and younger sounded like Yor/Shinobu. I looked it up and it's Mamiko Noto. Not a name I've heard of in years. And holy crap their voices sound so similar. |

I'm not sure what I'd call it to be ghosted like that, maybe neglected but even that is slightly off. It's hard to find words for it other than she was hurt and it's more just a tragic situation for both of them. Yeah, I did hesitate and half-reconsider as I was typing and posting that comment as I do think that "discarded" is probably too harsh a term since an actual discarding in practice would entail more her being thrown out of the palace and onto the streets like garbage, refused reentry or acknowledgement from the public authorities in any way, which obviously didn't happen. I'm tempted to say that it was not a discarding in practice - like at the political level in a way which would directly downgrade her lifestyle. But more just a personal psychological and emotional discarding on his own part. But if he was still entertaining thoughts of her in the form of painting her later in life and acts like that then maybe that isn't altogether true as maybe he was still keeping her close, just silently and unable to act on it in a "proper" or "normal" way she would have recognized and welcomed at the time. Maybe "distancing" is the most accurate. Possibly necessary distancing due to his condition. Pauler-Kun said: Well, i think that's Jinshi's father, the previous emperor. Implied to be grandfather, if the theory previously voiced within the show about the second baby switch is correct. Since that second baby of the former emperor and Anshi would have been switched with Jinshi and died in his stead by inadvertent honey poisoning at Fengming's hand. |

Though I am not sure if he still contacted her in writing or through passing messages other ways or not, it was only stated he stopped seeing her. |

Man this was soo bad for everyone involved. The Pedo emperor was a puppet but was still horrible. His mother wanted to protect him but still let him get away with lot of things. Anshi gave me love and hate vibes. She probably has Stockholm syndrome. She eventually started loving the person she hated. Did she rape him ? im quite confused. And jinshi is definitely the former emperors son. I realised it the last episode and knew he was the current emperors half brother. |

Marinate1016 said: Well this got dark as expected. Lot of lore for Jinshi and his family in this one. Maomao solving the case in almost record time was funny, but it let us get to learn about Anshi’s mental state and the full story with the previous emperor. I can’t say I blame Anshi at all for hating the previous emperor. First of all, her dad sold her off as a little girl, then she has to sleep with a pedophile and bear his kid only for said pedophile to forget about her when she aged out of his tastes. She never got to have a normal life or do the things she wanted to do. I’m a bit confused on her “tormenting” the emperor tho did she end up raping him that night to pay him back for what he did to her or did she just tease him into a mind break? After seeing the flashbacks I’m definitely convinced the previous emperor was severely autistic and liked little girls because he was mentally a child himself. Doesn’t make it right or ok, but just a psychological explanation. He never should’ve been in a leadership position from the start with his mental problems. Unfortunate situation all around. Love the little mother-son esque bonding moment at the end. Anshi peeping that Jinshi clearly has a thing for Maomao.. maybe this’ll make him a bit more aggressive with her going forward. 😋 good on Anshi not letting the fucked up shit in her past make her give up on life. Even with all its ups and downs it’s still worth it. Great episode, good job Maomao! EDIT: thanks to the folks on the kusuriya sub for confirming it was rape, thought so but you can never be too sure with all the twists they throw in this show Yeah. It seems he was definitely autistic and a bit mentally challenged. |

Yeah poison pigment, not too original. I enjoyed the Empress dowager's story more. I guess Jinshi's apple doesn't fall far from the tree as far as his interest in lolis go. Maomao would have been a top girl if she had been born back then. |

Bit of a difference there, I'd say. At least at the time of the start of the series, Maomao is 17 (technically biologically 16 if we're using the modern system of counting age, but the Chinese used to use a different system). Whereas Anshi at the start of that flashback sequence I think was supposed to be as young as 10. Gyokuyou is 19 when the series begins. So Maomao would be closer to someone like Gyokuyou in age. At least if we're going by age. But maybe you were going by body type and her non-voluptuousness. |

@Darkzepheran Thank you. I hadn't put together that Suiren is Ah Do's mother and Jinshi's grandmother. this episode seems to have left people with a lot of questions. Mine is giving me a headache. I had to go back and listen again. Anshi said that a daughter was born, the king denied she was his and she was given to a doctor to claim as his own. Uhhhhh.... Unless there's a bunch of doctor's running around with daughters, that baby is Maomao. So was that minister or w/e he is lying and Maomao is ...gulp.. Jinshi's sister OR was her mom entertaining men outside of the king. If she's still in the court, it's time she be found. |

@dragynfaerie Sorry to burst your bubble but no, Maomao is the biological daughter of Lakan and Fengxian. If we weren´t shown maomao´s backstory back in S1, I would have agreed with you about the baby being Maomao, it can make scene since her adoptive father was a doctor in the palace, then later exiled. I´m not a LN reader, but I have hunch we might see that baby appear in the future. It seems kinda like a waste to create that scenario and not use it further on. It would be wild if we find out the baby is someone we already know and is wokring at the inner palace. |
