Just finished episode 5, and while i am enjoying things, i want to know when things really pick up. Each episode so far feels like an introduction and features new characters, and again, while it is interesting, I want to know when the actual plot starts

As the user above told you, the anime will continue to be episodic. At some point, they will tell you about Ginko's past and things like that but generally speaking, the anime is purely episodic.

all the episodes are like this. There might be one or two cases that take more than one episode, but this is what you're gonna get. The best thing about it is that it's episodic tbh. idk how you could turn any of these stories into 12 episode arcs or something like that. it's very chill and slow paced.

I don’t think the plot picks up. It remains the same throughout. If you enjoy the vibes, then you’ll enjoy the rest. It is a slower type of show though

All episodes will be structured the same. You gotta be in the right frame of mind to enjoy Mushishi, the episodes are almost like bedtime stories, some being gloomier while others being more optimistic.

things pick up slightly around ep 10-15 but after that its episodic like usual. to me it got repetitive, half hearted and pointless in s2

Case of the day type of thing.

The only double episode plots are the specials as far as I remember.

It's not everyone's cup of tea.

Took me almost year and a half to finish mainly because it's not the sort of anime you're supposed to binge.

Zoomers can't understand what episodic means huh? There is no "actual plot" in slice of life stories anyway.

Haha i somehow missed the slice of life tag so i was getting confused and a bit impatient watching it until people started answering here. I was expecting something more psychological so it was a bit of a let down for me. I don’t hate slice of life animes, but I generally don’t like the idea of a new plot and characters every episode. Like someone here said, it feels like a collection of bedtime stories. I mostly prefer stuff with character development

this is not your generic shonen anime. he won't get possessed by the bugs and become super Saiyan. There are no enemies trying to use the bugs to conquer the world. It's just Ginko treating his patients and that's it. I really enjoyed this anime btw. best slice of life imo.

I know it’s not shounen, and I wasn’t expecting any sort of action at all. I actually really like animes with a more calm or slow pace if done well, like haibane renmei, I just expected something more psychological. Plus I generally prefer stuff with character development, so the whole thing of introducing new characters every time just isn’t for me.

@muringuis

Mushis are not bugs really and I think you missed the point of the thread.

episodic, and honestly perfect to watch right before bed. a nice short story to think on while you fall asleep. not really great for binging, I think it's best watched one at a time. you'll miss it once you finish it.

I like Mushishi specifically because its always toned down and slow. I usually dislike episodic shows (I dont even like cowboy bebop which is considered legendary in its own rite)
But mushishis atmosphere is so thick and despite its often horrific themes its so incredibly quiet and peaceful. If westerners made mushishi then 90% of the spirits would be trying to kill humans. But the view of the supernatural from a culture that was shaped and molded by such folklore is so different. These spirits are only living their own lives as they naturally do. Their intent is rarely ill towards humans, but their actions are often inconvenient or dangerous for us. So they must be dealt with. But physical force isnt something that can affect them. so other more clever and interesting methods are necessary.

This view of the supernatural is what makes mushishi incredibly impressive to me. The muted atmosphere makes it easy to enjoy. and I love how you never become familiar with characters that leave the show as quickly as they arrive.
He died doing what he wanted, no matter what, right? I bet he was happy.

Good luck with berserk Kouji Mori, you'll need all the help you can get. We believe in you.
