Don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie. But I prefer the manga over this one. I think it’s because the movie felt very slow paced for me, and things felt quite dragged out. The animation and direction was excellent, I almost shed a tear at some moments cause of how beautiful a shot or scene looked, so that would make up for the long dragged out things. Maybe it’s because with the manga, I can read through it fast, cause reading speed varies. But with the movie, I can’t “watch it faster”, can I? So yeah I thought the movie was nice but at the same it time I was getting bored at quite a few points, and I thought the voice acting in some scenes sounded awkward (maybe I’m just used to the over the top ones), so I would give this movie a 7 or 7.5 out of 10 and no more than that, does that mean I have bad taste? |

It just means that you have different preferences. “Good taste” is a myth, this stuff is so subjective. I gave this a 10/10 but I never read the manga, in fact I knew very little about it going in beyond “it’s about 4koma.” So my rating could be heavily swayed by my emotional reaction. I don’t really know what I’m trying to say with all my rambling here so I guess the tl;dr is: we’re all just dorks watching cartoons, like what you like, feel how you feel; art is naturally going to give different people different responses |

I agree with you... I felt the same thing.. Tatsuki Fujimoto's Art can be adapted, with Look Back it is now sure.. I think it's the pacing of his work that basically hits differently and that is the tricky part to adapt into anime movie/series other than that yeah movie's Ost, artwork and every aspect was top notch... |

No no this isn’t rage bait bro, I said I liked the movie but not as much as I thought I would. The movie, the original work and author, and the fans are pretty much goated, it’s just that my taste is a little different, sry if this seems like ragebait, I mean no harm, I’m just someguy on the internet✌️. |

I have the opposite reaction, I actually felt the movie more impactful thanks to the animation, voice acting and the music. And i actually felt the movie quite short and fast, thats the reason why I wasnt that emotional, saw some ppl saying they cry but the movie didnt evoke that strong sentiment out of me. I got teary eyes tho. And no, you arent stupid if you dont like a title that is praised. |

Nothing wrong with enjoying the source material more than the adaptation. I personally liked the adaptation more, but all of your reasons are valid. Reading/Watching anything is always subjective, so it’s never a bad thing if you go against the consensus. You’d be surprised how many people have told me they watch anime in 2X speed 😭 |

People saying shock value this tragedy that, raising my expectations. I didn't get what I was expecting, not that I do not like it, the story is completely about Fujimoto's two sides of artistry. He even divided his name into two characters. Appearantly he killed his more artsy side in favor of serial production and he lamented on about that in Look Back. |

nah I agree that the movie fell short of the manga. I love the manga and some of the appeals of it did not get translated over well. Fujimoto is great at making the comic medium feel cinematic, with the time-lapse and perspective subtly showing their growth. the movie has to kind of spoon-feed it, and the use of montage had weird pacing, padding at times and being too quick to soak in at others. the music was not overbearing and immersion-breaking, being very typical as if the melodies they were using were supposed to convey this tone but fail to augment the scene. it is beautifully drawn and voiced, but it just fails to capture the magic of the manga. |

Me personally, I wasn't moved by the story plot. I felt that it didn't have too much going on within the plot that it could have. The two characters are cool and adorable, but I am not emotionally attached to them. There's a weird sequence of scenes. One day the shy girl talks to a giddy girl about her, then next day, their drawling manga for x amount of months with no dialogue or growth periods in between. Them hanging out was cute, but that stuff happens too early and suddenly they become best friends for life. Not to mention, the ending felt contrived. Their best friends and she didn't have the courage to tell them that she wanted to go to art school? They could work something around realistically I feel like. And the shy girl's death felt flat. I didn't really feel anything. Both characters' personalities didn't feel fleshed out the way I hoped, which made me shrug my shoulder. Still sad though. I'll probably enjoy the manga a lot more but, in terms of the plot and theme, I wasn't super impressed. |

Interesting take. For me, I enjoyed it being slow because it gave me a chance to breathe and take in the scenery and the atmosphere of the movie. There was this scene in Chainsaw Man where Aki was getting up in the morning which was captivating because it was quiet. Something so simple as getting up in the morning, making your cup of coffee/tea and taking in the morning breeze which can feel ever so tranquil. I just recently watched the movie so it's still fresh in my mind. |

@someguy i liked it when it was more soft and wholesome too, that's why the earlier parts of the show are my favourite. but then they started having more fights, the whole tournament arc bored me. so the second half is where i lost interest but early stuff like where we meet lil fern at heiter's place made me tear up and even when frieren takes the gang to look at the meteors, the series just peaked too early for me lol. |

Maybe you felt it slow because you have consummed and enjoyed mostly fast-paced stories , the junk-food of this or other media and it made you desensitized to paying attention to or enjoying anything other than fast-paced "action". I don't say that there is anything wrong with that, or that you are "stupid" but it shows how much differently two person can percieve the same thing because not for a moment I thought this movie slow , on the contrary, I become completely immersed in its story. |

Seeing people giving it 10/10, 9.5/10 surprised me. For me it was 8 just because I like sad endings. I didn't get the hype, I also didn't know it was autobiographical and both girls represented Fujimoto so I wasn't in the lore. I like slow paced movies, I love talked movies but this? I don't know. I liked it, I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. |

@someguy Then maybe you just have to be in a certain mood for it, or get it not in some mechanical sense interpreting some symbols and such but having some previous life experience that makes you able to connect to the heart of the story, feel and appreciate some of its aspects that could be hidden to someone who is younger. For me the essence of it was not about that somebody died in it and you have to be "sad" because of it, I have seen so many japanese and korean wannabe tearjerkers that I have become completely desentized to that kind of thing if the story doesn't offer much more than just that. What actually made me connected to their story was how they became the purpose and motivation for each others life, how they chased each other (at first without realising it), competed with each other, admired each other, completed each other, struggled to keep up with the pace of the other and didn't want to be left behind (the visual language of the anime showed it so beautifully) and in the process they relationship became something alike to "soul friends", the red threads of their fates became so entagled that even in an other life they couldn't become separated. Kyoumoto became not only in the artistic sense but a more profound way somebody who gave the "background" to Fujino's life, gave direction to her talent and made her realise it while in the same way Fujino gave purpose to Kyomoto's previously inert gift in drawing and made her come out of her shell. They had something so special beyond their shared interest, something that came from the time they spent together, from the inner motivation and meaning they gave to each other even if they were far away from the other, even after the death of one of them. It is one thing to understand those things I have described and an other one to become so deeply engrossed in feeling them that you completely forget about time, you just go with the flow of it and don't feel it slow or fast - it is just right... This movie was in a sense extremely similar to the chinese movie Soul Mate from 2016 which got readapted by the koreans in the 2023 movie Soulmate. I recommend you to watch those movies. |
