very good
if you watch this you watched the original pretty much
i think most if not all are the same voice actors from 35 years ago
biggest difference and maybe is the studio ranma's hair is pink but in everything else including the most recent thing from before (2008) is a deep red other hair tones might have changed also but they are still the same color
i wonder how many episodes they are doing

It's been around one year ago I have watched the old Ranma anine and its OVA. I still remember how dreadful the anime was and I never try to read its manga because of how much I dislike the anime adaptation riddled with terrible fillers. My god I still remember how much I hate Happosai and he's one of the main contributor for my distaste.

And now with this remake in this fall season, I'm really happy to say that I really enjoy this first episode a lot. And I hope they could keep the momentum and pick good chapters to be adapted from the manga. I really miss Rumiko sensei's slapstick, bickering, silliness and most importantly its endearing and slow romance. And to my surprise, I actually prefer this animation style and OST compared to the old one. Lastly I love its ED, it's so adorable. Hearing Ranma's VA makes ot feels really nostalgic and I really glad he's still doing well with his role.

Watching a remake of Ranma in 2024 is surreal. And the first time watching it in Japanese... it's great but it's a different experience haha.

Female Ranma is cute af.

Looks like we say goodbye to the nudity in this remake... wait nvm, we got doll bodies. Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! If there's one thing I hate it's nudity with doll bodies. If you're not going to show nipples, cover them cleverly but don't do this. Shame, this is one of the things I liked about the Spice and Wolf remake for example.

Ranma man, freaking Ranma ½. I remember watching a few episodes as a kid and years later trying to fully watch it but didn't get that far once I found out it wasn't fully adapted. This first episode defiinitely brought back the nostalgia and was just as fun as I remembered the original.

With all that said, I'm not looking forward to one of the biggest crimes in anime history...

Well they lied too us, wasn't suppose to be like this. It's woke as fuck. Looks worse than the original and on top of that, it's censored. Sadly, I'm still going to watch it.
@Toilgamesh Woke? What nonsense are you fucking spouting?

It was so adorable! I read the manga during my transition from university student to working adult so this series is very special to me. The ending theme gave me so many feels, I'm falling in love with Akane and Ranma all over again!

I'm not saying Ranma 1/2 was bad or anything (tho the original anime was a disappointment and never had an ending for some reason) but without Urusei Yatsura there'd be no Ranma.

I agree, without UY there would be no Ranma, but not for the reason you think of: the author is the same, UY was an earlier work of her, if it didn't pan out she would have probably chosen another career.

As for the references, I guess I wasn't clear enough in explaining that I used only outside references because the japanese references to Ranma are literally too many to mention, like Mimi and Nene in Slayers ( https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/ranma/images/8/83/Mimi_and_Nene.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20110817192939 ) or these plushies in Kyoukai no Rinne ( https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/ranma/images/c/cd/Ranma_Plushes_in_Rinne.png/revision/latest?cb=20200307102423 ), or even, if you wanna keep talking about UY, Ranma and Shampoo in the OVA 4 of UY ( https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/ranma/images/5/53/Ranma_Cameo_OVA4.png/revision/latest?cb=20200818010405 ).

As for other artists citing it as inspiration:

Hiroshi Aro https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/house-of-1000-manga/2010-10-21
Bryan Lee O'Malley https://www.crunchyroll.com/news/latest/2017/12/2/tokyo-comicon-2017-bryan-lee-omalley-scott-pilgrim-talks-about-the-influence-from-ranma-12

Matt Bozon https://web.archive.org/web/20130917093704/http://www.girlgamer.com/zine/article/2985/
Even Makoto Shinkai said it took inspiration from Ranma 1/2 for the making of Your Name (Kadokawa Shoten, August 27, 2016, page 48)

So, what was your point again?

Urusei Yatsura was Rumiko Takahashi's first serialized work and was a big hit. It was new and fresh when it came out and influenced hundreds of mangas. It showed that a manga written by a woman can be popular. Without it, a lot of works wouldn't exist, not just Takahashi's own series'.

As for the references, I guess I wasn't clear enough in explaining that I used only outside references because the japanese references to Ranma are literally too many to mention,

Meanwhile, the references to Urusei Yatsura in anime are literally endless. The only non-Takahashi anime you mentioned is Slayers which is an old anime. Meanwhile, I saw Urusei Yatsura being referenced in modern anime that came out just in the last year like Takagi-san, Monogatari-series, Tonikaku Kawaii, etc. (https://uruseiyatsura.fandom.com/wiki/Cameos_and_References) I don't remember any anime in recent memory referencing Ranma 1/2 besides, get this, Urusei Yatsura 2022.

And of course Rinne and other Takahashi anime that came out after Ranma 1/2 would have references to it. In the end, they're all Rumiko Takahashi series' so of course they'd reference each other. Ranma 1/2 itself had tons of UY references but I didn't include them because of this obvious reason.

Ranma 1/2 was basically a derivative of Urusei Yatsura. So many of its concepts and entire characters were basically ripped straight out of Urusei Yatsura with minimal changes. So much so that some of the characters even shared the same voice actors in both series. In reality, Ranma 1/2 itself was inspired by Urusei Yatsura. So, all the works that you've mentioned ironically wouldn't exist without Urusei Yatsura.

@ArimaKana I ask the question of why because nowadays when I ask someone which of Ruimiko's works they now, most of the time they UY and InuYasha. Very rarely do I hear people saying Ranma nowadays. I won't sit here and lie and act like it's nor popular, because basically anything the woman makes it popular, but if they really wanted to make a lot of money, than an InuYasha remake would make the most sense, seeing as it's her most popular work and is still highly regarded to this day.

Inuyasha was never bigger than Ranma. Check your facts. Ranma sold way more. WAY more.

Ranma is still nowadays the biggest, most popular and most successful work by Rumiko Takahashi.

It's really hard to judge this after having watched the original Ranma 1/2 so many times. Episode 1 is pretty much identical to the original series' episode 1. There are some minor changes, but a lot of the dialogue is the same, the story is exactly the same, and even a lot of the actions that they do are the same. It's nice to hear the original cast back (except Genma and Soun), though there are differences in their voices (it has been 35 years). The opening theme keeps that classic Ranma feeling, and I really like it. The ending feels more like a modern anime ending, and does not have that original Ranma feeling. The designs feel cuter. The characters look younger, especially the girls. Kasumi looks a lot younger than before. The colour is similar to modern anime, with fewer black lines. Plenty of manga-style text on screen, too. Will I continue? Of course. I'm curious to see where this goes, and if they condense the story more. And will we get a proper conclusion this time?

That was really good!

Not that I didn't like Urusei Yatsura, in fact I enjoyed it, but from this first episode, I feel like I am going to enjoy Ranma ½ much more, already introduced a bunch of likeable characters and fem Ranma is... nice.

Speaking of Urusei Yatsura, I still need to find the time to continue season 2 of the remake, due to circumstances, I was not able to keep up with it while it was airing.

I am looking forward to more of this.

Dumb details spotter here.
Isn't the Tendou house inverted ? I'm pretty sure the entrance of the house is on the other side of the living room in the original haha :)
Not sure how it was in the original manga, could be simply dumb left/right manga mirroring thing in the west back in the days.

This was a nice start to the series. I like the character design and the soft colors. The animation is pretty good, too. I do think the writing was better on the first adaptation, with tighter comedic timing and deeper thematic resonnance, but I'm hoping the show finds its footing along the way.

It's nice to have some of the voice actors back!

Much like the recently finished Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 is getting a remake in the same style as Rumiko Takahashi's previous work. Now centered around a more down to Earth premise but still with some goofy weirdness, the romcom already started with a double naked bath scene, various martial arts combats and a good opening sequence.

There's not much to add that wouldn't have applied to the other anime aside from the fact that I don't know how many episodes will it have. My supposition is around 50 though there may be less depending on how much they intend to bring back.

As a comedy, it's good, but as an ecchi it's a disgrace, anatomy barbie, it's the most shity kind of censorship and honestly, I don't remember ever censored not only the front, but also the back of the character. Those who watched the leaks said that the season is mostly comedy, well that well I think the moderators will not hurt to correct the page of the work, and that there is an unnecessary genre present and yes like others will hope for a bd release with corrections.

Great episode! Fun, comedy heavy and very cute! I love the pace and deadpan expressions - just like the Manga. Action is solid and lots of fun! They kept Ranma's character as is, and Akane is just as much as the main character as him. There is a difference in voices and acting, despite having the same original cast. many sound... even younger? aside for Kappei who sounds at times a tad older.
cute note:
When Ranma is first introduced there's that cute framing thing, which will come very handy throughout the show, as there are so many characters in the Manga, and hopefully in this Anime too.

While when comparing just the first episode of the original to this first episode, the original is better, but let us all be reminded that the first season of the original was expensive at the time to make and didn't draw enough rating, which later turned into a much lesser show with sometimes poor animation. so I hope this more balanced production will be able to hold the same quality and vibe for the countless episodes they have in store, if following the Manga.

Overall - Very pleased! Cant wait for more episodes!

The censorship is already annoying (but I do like the approach over the usual 'steam' which is more annoying to me) for an anime like this but this episode was SO good, the wait was worth it, the anime is promising so I can let it slide for now, we'll see how that goes. Overall I'm just SUPER happy one of the best comedies and one of my favorite anime of all time is FINALLY back, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!

Weird censorship aside, everyone and everything looks childish here in comparison to the original.
Can't really put a finger on it. Like the characters look smaller, chibi-er. round-ish. I don't know. In the og they looked taller and more mature.
As if this is the T rated version for kids instead of the M rated version of the original.
A big bummer imo.

Here i am... obviously aware of everything that was shown for now because original series is set in stone as a top 10 favorite anime in existence. i was mostly waiting to discover the new italian dub cast, aware than unlike the japanese coworkers it's extremely unlikely that even a single original voice will return, and that it seems almost a miracle that this show was dubbed in the first place (Urusei Yatsura 2022 was too, but season 1 only and no updates at all for 2 after months), so there not much i can add... noticed girl Ranma's eyes aren't blue any more (and i'm not complaining), OP and ED look fine, and long-haired Akane in a gi is always so cool to watch (girl Ranma too).

Bummer then they censored Akane nudity but they did keep Ranma in girl form, but without nipples which I thought was funny.

Sound and art is better then original. Thought I spotted some small changes. Akane knew Ranma was in the bath in the original but did not bother her but the new version she did not know he was in there.

I am going to enjoy watching this

I liked the adaptation. I'm not very concerned about censorship. Ranma 1/2 represents my teenage years, it was one of the firsts animes I watched fully conscious that it was indeed an anime. And I watched it on open TV, whose censorship was even worse (squarely omitting entire episodes).

The best? Megumi Hayashibara as ranma-chan was awesome, I'd even dare saying that a bit better than in the original.

Other than being leaked beforehand, it's now ACTUALLY here. And I mean, for what reason, I'm still not sure. It's censored already, and other than that banger of an OP, not really sure what purpose for this to exist. UY was one thing because it was an actual classic, this though? I doubt many out of Japan have even heard of this Rumiko work before.... Should've just made a InYusha remake, but whatever.

Though, we're stuck with this, and there' nothing we can do about it, so mean as well take what we can get. Episode just sets the basic premise of that Mr. Panda and Ranma went to China of all places and when going into some special water transformed to something else. The sansei or whatever, turning into Mr. Panda, and Ranma, a girl. And now, when dosed with HOT water, NOT boiling water xD, transform back to their normal form, or something with cold water and Ranma transforming back idk.

So yeah, it's a unique premise for sure, but for if this can last as long as FOUR HUNDERED CHAPTERS, who knows. Yeah, he's gonna grow to love her fiancé in the end, same as UY, but IDK if you can really repeat that for as long as UY did. It was getting a bit repetitive near the end. This'll just suffer from the same problem UY has, with since it's episodic, everything just goes back to normal by the end, not really leaving much room for development.

For a first episode, it was fun, I guess. MAPPA animating this doesn't really change much, I'd say it's no different from david and UY. At least we know the production is healthy, considering it's all tweleve episodes got leaked.

Just would hope it wouldn't have been censored, but whatever.
@IzanaSolos Are you joking? You doubt Ranma 1/2 is known outside of Japan? It was her first work to take off in the U.S. It was everywhere when I was growing up. It's the first manga I ever read, back when they were still manually re-arranging the panels to make them left-right readable for Americans (which was stupid, and they thankfully stopped).

Ranma½ was huge back in the 90s/early 2000s. No one even knew her previous works here. And it actually showed nipples in free TV here, in the middle of the day :V
Anyone talking as if Ranma½ wasn't huge outside of Japan either wasn't born yet and/or didn't watch anime back then or is joking.

really excited for this one. the original series was my first ever rom-com back when I was like 11 or 12 or something. unfortunately, they only ever showed the first 80 episodes on German TV - although I'm not sure if the anime actually ever got a proper ending anyway, so who knows what I did or didn't miss.

anyway, first episode of the remake is a banger in my opinion. well animated fight scene with a distinct style that I hope they'll retain for future fights, good comedic timing that made me burst out laughing even when I already knew exactly how a joke would play out, and an overall very pleasant art style. yes, it's censored which can be distracting when Ranko looks like a stripped Barbie doll - they honestly should have gone for some convenient censor ship instead of that - but man, you gotta be really desperate for some nip if that somehow offends you.

negative points perhaps for the Japanese voice cast. I'm sorry, but Akane sounds like a middle-aged woman. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I don't think retaining the old cast was the right choice.

oh, and to chime in on the subject of which of Rumiko's work was more popular: it's Ranma 1/2, and by a magnitude.

They literally drew her as a blob in one scene with no ass. It’s modern remake bs to appeal to LGBT people. They don’t even have nudity and cut down the levels of fanservice that were present in the original. Hard pass on this liberal/woke demake.

It's censored just like I expected, but maybe the BD version will be uncensored. The only thing I'm not totally convinced about is the color palette, especially with girl Ranma's hair, I prefer the old version. Everything else is great. Overall this was a fun episode, getting to watch Ranma again is definitely nice. I liked some of the animation even if it doesn't have the 90's charm anymore, the new scene design was somewhat of an improvement. Not a fan of the new pacing, color scheme, OP/ED, censorship, or making the Jusenkyo Guide less funny.

I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim
