Aoi Hana, more realistic, great characters (I have to love Fumi and her determination to stand up every time people let her down... A real and mature yuri manga.

Strawberry panic leading... I understand it attracted a lot of people to the genre but c'mon!

BTW: shouldn't we wait for 2010 to past before voting for best anime of the decade?

I really annoyed to see Strawberry Panic get the most vote. For me SP is a product to fulfill yuri fanboys' dreams than an honest show about lesbianism for both genders.

To claim Strawberry Panic as best yuri show is much like to claim Gravitaton as best yaoi show. Both may won the style but not the content.

whats wrong with that :DDDDD

Also if thats the cast the question itself if vague. How people interpret "best" will determine their votes. For me, "best" = my favourite. If "best" = best content wise, then maybe i would have voted for a different anime.

If u wanna talk realism, then thats a whole different story and Sasameki koto or aoi hana would be the top ones but certainly "best" did not mean "most realistic". In the end i loved all the ones i watched so even tho i had one vote they were all worth nominations.. just some id rather vote over others.

1. Marimite
2. SP!
3. Simoun
4. Blue Drop / Aoi Hana
53046464523. Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito

Marimite is just absolutely fantastic. SP! was my favorite too until I re-watched them both about 3 times.

Well, look around... a lot / most Yuri club members are gay/bi females. And like XxdoobxX said, some (/many) of them think that the way SP! handled gay relationships was really ... "cheap".

My opinion is that SP! is just some kind of soft-soft-soft-SOOOOFT-Hentai. Without sex. *cough* fail *cough*. :D

a marketing scheme that involves only capturing the "gay" portion of the audience would fail so its only natural that if u want the yuri fanbase to grow, your gonna have to appeal to a bigger audience regardless.

Put it bluntly, Want to see yuri anime? Well its gotta interest the straight community or else there wouldnt be any.

Marimite has also a LOT of male fans. And it was kept very realistic (at least compared with SP!). Also, it hasn't the slightest hint of a sex scene or something like that. This was one of SP!'s biggest mistakes in my opinion. It was like: "Oh, yes. Another "ZOMG I GONNA RAPE U!" scene. Why do I already know that nothing will happen? *yawn*".

It was just too overdone with the "She wants sex, but she won't get it"-thing. Hell, the anime started with a random "w00t, who's that girl, and why does she want to get in my pants?!" scene.

On the other hand, Marimite's first ep. made very clear that the viewer shouldn't expect too much related to sex.

There's no year 0 so the decade goes like 1-10 both included... that would be from 1st January 2001 to 31st December 2010 but I better don't start a maths discussion here, if people like to count from 0 to 9 it's ok I guess.

In my opinion SP!, as Shôjo Sect, can't be taken seriously. It's very entertaining but it's not a very good story. I agree in the soft hentai label in a way but for me it's more like a well done yuri parody (if you watch SP! in a comedy POV, wich I did) of the classic story of female students in a residence.

I'm not gonna flame you, but soft hentai without sex would be Queen's Blade or Kanokon. SP! is nothing even close to that garbage (especially kanokon).

My vote goes to Kannazuki no Miko, words can't express how much I love the final episodes. Such a cruel, but beautiful love story.

That being said, if Canaan is considered yuri (which I doubt, personnally), shouldn't Ga-Rei Zero be considered also? Ga-Rei Zero would be my second pick.

Then Aoi Hana, Candy Boy, Noir, Kashimashi, Strawberry Panic and Mai Hime. SP would have been higher but I hated the end, same with Kashimashi.

I'm totally shocked SP got in there FTW. I was sure it was going to be Marimite.

I've only ever considered SP a guilty pleasure. I remember describing it to a friend as a yuri Bold and the Beautiful. That being said I did find it immensely enjoyable but I don’t find it to be a series that I feel I need to watch again.

Aoi Hana on the other hand is a work of art. I want everyone I know to see and read Aoi Hana, I am forever proud to be an Aoi Hana fan. I think it’s one of the few series that truly transcends the yuri genre. A lot of people could articulate it better than me but in my mind there’s no other option for best yuri.

If you wanted to showcase the best yuri can offer would you recommend SP? I don’t think so, at least I wouldn’t. I just don’t get it!

Frankly I'm disappointed lol.

CANAAN is yuri because:

- evil psycho lesbian supporting character
- strong bond between Canaan x Maria

Ga-Rei doesn't count because despite Yomi and Kagura being good friends, they are ultimately straight girls. Their love for one another does not transcend above the platonic level.

Ambiguous series like CANAAN and Noir show that the feelings between the women are something that cannot be put into words or classified, thus it teeters between romantic and platonic-- but the one evident thing is that it is the most important thing to them regarding their relationship.

You said it fine already. Aoi Hana will forever be a favourite of mine. While the anime does something that the yuri genre never did before (acknowledge sexuality), the manga is breaking down barriers all over the place.

I never thought I'd live to see a long-running yuri manga that subtly dealt with issues of love and sex. Most yuri manga are consumed by it. Aoi Hana does not let itself get swallowed by something like that. It always prioritises its story and characters before anything else.

It really is art. I'd say it just about ties with Octave for me on best yuri manga, though Aoi Hana is more traditional, building off the usual tropes. Octave is just original from the get-go.

You've got a good point with Liang Qi, but I really can't see how the Maria x Canaan relationship is any different than Yomi and Kagura's. Is their bond really that stronger? To me, it's actually the opposite. After all, yomi did... *remembers the final episode*.

I kind of get what you mean though, I just find it hard to think of their relationship as nothing more than sisterly love.

Big thumbs up for having Octave as a personal favourite though. =)

No, if I wanted to showcase how enjoyable a show can be, I'd recommend SP. Sometimes I feel like people just call SP a "guilty pleasure" cause it lets them admit that they liked it while still appearing like they only enjoy "mature" anime...

No, if I wanted to showcase how enjoyable a show can be, I'd recommend SP. Sometimes I feel like people just call SP a "guilty pleasure" cause it makes them sound smart. Everyone knows enjoying a slow anime makes you a cool kid, right?

I didn’t think calling it a guilty pleasure was an inflammatory statement.

I’m sensing this is some kind of veiled criticism hehehe. I did make a point of illustrating that while I enjoyed watching SP I still wouldn’t consider it a masterpiece like I do Aoi Hana. If you or others enjoyed the series that is something that I can totally understand. For me it doesn’t compare.

I love all paced anime thanks!

I don’t think I’m being pretentious (which is what you’re implying) if I consider SP a guilty pleasure. If you feel differently that’s fine.

SP is a good anime, I have very fond memories of watching it, it was even one of the first yuri’s animes I watched. Is it the best yuri? Not in my humble opinion but I’m out-numbered here so you win lol.

What a tough decision. I was torn between so many of them D: Mai-HiME, Kannazuki no Miko, Kiddy Grade, and El Cazador de la Bruja would be my top choices, but the first two are the main two I'm torn between...

In the end, I went with Kannazuki no Miko since it was more yuri-centric.

This was hard to choose ><. I ended up choosing Noir as my top pic.

Close were R.O.D. the TV, Marimite, and Simoun.
I'm not surprised that SP! has been getting most of the votes, people tend to be loyal to the series that introduced them to a genre, I think this was the first yuri series for a lot of people (to be honest it was one of the first ones I watched too along with KnM).
I tend to have different tastes than the average yuri fan, Noir for me was a masterpiece that will be hard to beat. Marimite is gorgeous, R.O.D. satisfies my jumbled tastes, and Simoun is a very good drama.

I voted for My-Hime, because My-Hime, Steel Angel Kurumi, Kashimashi were the first shoujo-ai/yuri style animes I saw.
I picked My-Hime, because 2 of the 3 Main females in the show were in love with other girls through out the entire series and the show had other girls in love with girls. Most of the side characters were females, the main and side females all had cool powers, interesting weapons and creatures that were unique and cool to that show. So I am just surprised how low of a rating its gotten so far.

Though I had already guessed that Strawberry Panic would be in the lead, but I voted for what I thought was the best.

Mmm, I've seen most of the titles on the list and I have to say that Aoi Hana is my favorite.

What I like about it is that it shows a more realistic side to what girlxgirl relationships are like, and doesn't have any kind of outside influence on the world like Kannazuki no Miko or Blue Drop. Don't get me wrong, I like those series, too!

It was hard to pick between Sasameki Koto, Aoi Hana, and Candy Boy. I really liked the uber cuteness of Candy Boy, and the funniness of Sasameki Koto... blargh, ten years worth of yuri makes it hard to choose favorites.

My vote goes to Aoi Hana. When I watched it it felt like this is what a yuri anime should be - sweet, heartwrenching and characters that you actually care about... Not that any of the animes listed here aren't like this, it's just that Aoi Hana seemed like it exemplified the genre more than the others, to me :)

My second vote would go to Marimite (for reasons that have already been gushingly discussed XD), and third... hmm... I don't know... I'm tempted to say Simoun, but I have yet not finished it (hence I've no right to vote for it), so I'll go for third place tie breaker Sasameki Koto. Frustrating as it is, it is still a good show overall. :)
