This is why you don't mess with someone with youkai powers like that. When the fight gets serious, it gets serious.

Feels more like a buildup episode though and I believe the main cast is only going to improve more and more from here. Jinka is definitely worth keeping an eye on while Shakuyaku adds a bit more lighthearted energy to the show.

A solid episode focusing on Jinka’s characteristics, show him overcoming the fear of death with shear will to win. Pretty typical shounen stuff, but good nonetheless.

At the start of the OP there are pomegranates. Google says pomegranates symbolised fertility in Ancient Greece and Rome, might have a different meaning in Japan idk. Reminds me of that moment in AOT season 1.
10:05 焔姫咆 (enkihou) - "flame princess roar"

10:10 荒吹 (arabuki) - "wild blow"

10:21 土公拳 (dokouken) - "earth official fist" (this one has appeared before)

10:31 樹翁鞭 (juouben) - "tree venerable old man whip" (this one too)

10:38 水龍壁 (suiryuuheki) - "water dragon wall"

Oh hey, he used the back of the sword like Kenshin!
Jinka keeps saying that Raidou is just a human, but how did he fly? Or is it just anime logic lol.
Nice episode giving more characterization to Jinka. He actually cares about other people deep down!

Shaku looks so good with her new hairstyle and outfit. She's so cute! Must protecc vibes.

Jinka can hate humans as much as he wants, he can't abandon his humanity. At least not until he becomes full katawara.

Liked how Tama beat the snot out of the kid but still volunteered to help. She's a fox spirit. I wonder what she sees in humans. I don't think she fully understands humans cos she fails to communicate with them without sounding cringe. I wanna know more about why she cares about humans so much.

Ig the show will follow this format of new assassins hunting the cast for a while now. Hope it'll be over quick cos this format will become boring eventually.

Jinka losing to a human as well as Jinka being confused at why he can't ignore a random human kid are things i wasn't expecting to watch this episode lol

him beating the human and then giving back the same "you're lucky that you get to live" that the human told him... that is something i expected tho

From the previews, I thought his looked fairly good. After four episodes it is on my "Must Watch Now" list.
Supernatural creatures and powers. Characters not tropes. Many factions are a mix of good and bad. All set in a believable medieval world.

I've heard that MAL lowers the score of anime that aren't popular. If you look near the bottom of the page you'll see there's more ratings that are 7 and up than ratings that are 6 and below.

Damn seeing a human that could take on Jinka was wild. Guess it makes sense given he’s not a full Katawara yet. He’s still continuing to grapple with his desire to become a full Katawara and the innate human emotions still residing in him.

Even someone like him couldn’t turn down a boy asking for help. Love how Tama beats the boy up before telling him they’d help lol.

“You’re alive, as long as you’re alive something good will happen” very good advice from Shaku. Messed up of Jinka to try and put her down by bringing up all the stuff she’d been thru.. after she just tried to cheer him up.. but I imagine he’ll be an edgelord for a while yet. Hopefully his relationship with the group will help him grow past his hatred for humans.

In the end, he gets his payback after the first fight. Felt very much like a set up episode. Animation during the fight was solid and the OST continues to be really good too. Can’t wait for the next episode

Pretty good episode. Something about the show is pretty endearing to me.

It feels like the show is taking the time and effort to actually examine the characters, even though they're not exactly complicated. But it also feels like Jinka got a lot of development real quick.

Also, the less screen time Shinsuke gets the better. Glad everyone at dinner told him to stop shouting and sit down.

Both Jinka and Tama living in the former's Kokugetsusai place, now with Shinsuke and Shakugan, they're all in one piece together.

The siblings heading to another location of the katawara to further their world reformation motive and spread kindness, the people...aren't taking it too kindly to Tama's words. With the help of a kid, he takes them to Lord Guragura, who resides in the lake near the village, awaiting sacrifices. And rather unfortunately, his mother wasn't yet eaten by the katawara, so Jinka has to make a sensible choice, but before he could do so, he was thwarted by one of Dangaisyuu's darkness warriors, Zanzou Raidou. Putting both the kid and his mother on hostage, Raidou faces off with Jinka, which the former's strong power forces the latter to use his major techniques against him. The normal'looking sword, however, is able to overpower him. But too bad (and thankfully), he only eats katawara who are satiable, and passes on both youko and humans. But with his own sister on the line, the Dangaisyuu wants Jinka killed and be done with.

A letter of challenge to Jinka from a monk giving on behalf of Raidou, the Yamato family is somebody that Jinka has affiliations with in the past, barring his master and parents from that clan. And the swordfight from prior still has Jinka shaking, and he feels overpowered to the point that as much as Raidou has matched him in speed, he can't exactly win him in terms of strength. And just like before, Jinka spares Raidou, and his sister Hino is required to be his successor and become a war beast.

This show really needs to speed up somehow...

I know. But I don't think that's the full story. There should be more to it than that.

i think this is the first time i've liked an anime episode better than the manga equivalent for this show. jinka's hesitation during the initial fight against lord guragura feels less well-conveyed in the manga version, here it's very clear that he's hesitating. as well, i don't think these fights are that visually interesting in the manga, so seeing them in motion with some moments of higher quality sprinkled throughout is welcome-including jinka's final attack of the episode, which feels messy in the manga but is pretty clear here.

edit: that being said i'm a bit worried about how the show is going to be paced. currently we've been doing two chapters per episode (4 episodes in and we just finished chapter 8), but there's 100 chapters compared to 37 episodes... maybe there's some more battle-focused chapter sequences later on that will work better for adapting quicker. will be curious to see how that goes.

Ever since Jinka is introduced in this anime, I've already been loving it. Now we finally had his surname which is Yamato and personally I really like the balance of the four main characters in this story. This show is really refreshing to watch and the OST (and animation) is lit as well

@Cestlavie_ Never take MaL ratings seriously, remember what happened with Ishuzoku Reviewers, admins can change the score at their will and they most likely do it if they get paid to do so.

Tama’s whole “peace and love” spiel’s kinda wearin on me. I also love she doesn’t take shit from nobody. She’ll put hands on a little kid, girl doesn’t give a damn!

That duel with Raido was pretty dope. Jinka might have really met his match. Raido really had the kid dead to rights.

Welp... that was an unexpected way to win that duel, but that means that Jinka is potentially starting to understand humans a little bit more, also... can I say how good Shakugan looks in her new clothes? Not only they accent her nice busty figure, but they're also very practical for combat!

Those monks are so infuriating. If you want to assassinate someone, do it yourself. Why get others involved? Jinka need to visit those monks again and give them another beatdown.

Good juxtaposition between Raido and Jinka. They'll definitely keep Raido around as a foil.
