There were definitely mixed emotions coming into this episode but this one was also very emotional in itself.

That buildup, the race, and the songs put this episode really made it worth the watch imo. Plus, we're heading into the season finale so I'm curious what direction this season will end up heading towards to. Exciting.

An okay episode this time.

Intro was switched up a little bit this episode, usually Kita speaks, but Cheval Grand this time got the spotlight.
Then immediately showing that Kitasan announcing her retirement after the end of the year.
The poor banana salesman feeling sad about Kita retiring, even getting a flashback scene of when he first met her.

Halfway point for this episode shows us Royce and Royce's racing outfit!
Her name was officially given to us 12 hours ago but we didn't get any look at her race outfit until this episode.

Japan Cup race this time with Cheval Grand being the winner this time with Kitasan 2nd, closing out Cheval's little arc of wanting to beat Kita since she looked up to her.
(Felt like they could have shown this more in previous episodes leading up to this instead of all of it being condensed through flashbacks.)

We get Cheval's solo song for the first time too.
Her solo song is called "光の後ろ姿"

This was a good second to last episode.

Though I do certainly feel like if they could have, the way things played out would have probably been better if it happened in an earlier episode, since this episode was primarily focusing on Cheval and her win.
But not much they could have done about it anyways, with how literally this and the next race at Arima Kinen were the last 2 Kita ever ran.
13 Episodes is unfortunately not enough to really go over all the side characters little arcs alongside Kitasan and felt incomplete/rushed for most of them outside of Dia.

Man, Kitasan is going through the absolute worst right now.

Kitasan held a press conference, gathering the media to announce a certain determination. While many fans and other Uma Musume were surprised, Cheval Grand, Kitasan's contemporary, harbored complex emotions that she couldn't digest as she accepted the news.

Oh wow, Kitasan is really hanging up her racing boots. It totally makes sense given the condition of her body. The autumn triple crown is set as her final goal. It's kind of heartbreaking, especially for the folks running the shops; they seem to be taking it the hardest. Kitasan's body just can't handle the races anymore, you can practically feel the pain in her panting. This episode is mainly centered around Cheval Grand, and it's nice to learn more about her. That confession in the middle of the race is pretty wild, but props to her for pulling it off. Honestly, it's one of the most exciting episodes of the season, in my opinion. Huge congrats to Cheval on the win.

Cheval Grand truly pulled off the surprise of the season by securing her first crown. Now that Kitasan is solely focused on the Arima Kinen, I can't help but wonder what's in store for her in the finale.

Cheval finally wins a race tho i already thought she would win this one she deserves it.
Still it's sad that the condition of Kita san is deteriorating the races must take a serious toll on her body.
Hopefully the next race would be nice and i still want to see Duramente in a race against Kita san.

Oh, the op changed! Cheval Grand now says 負けない (makenai) - "I won't lose" instead of Kitasan.
Royce and Royce finally speaks! She just got added to the game as a support card today. Never heard about the irl horse, but it's always exciting when new characters get added to theh franchise.
Who was Verxina talking about in the scenes near the river? Please enlighten me.
Got chills during the race yet again. So happy for Cheval! The new song sounds really nice too.
Really enjoyed this one. Last episode and Kita's last race next T_T So sad to see this go.

Congrats, Cheval. But her whole sub-plot was just for this race against a horse that is already declining? Win is a win, I guess.

I was afraid of this and it happened, Kita chan is retiring. Watching her like that after each race is painful though so this might be for the best. Episode was set up beautifully for Cheval and she finally defeated Kita chan and won her first G1. The rise of Cheval and decline of Kita chan. In a previous episode it was shown Kita chan was losing her apetite while Cheval having an increase in apetitie whereas Kita chan used to have big apetite and Cheval didn't have much apetite for food and was forcing herself to eat before as shown in this episode. Which shows that Cheval is in her growth spurt now and reaching peak while Kita chan has been declining.

One more episode to go and one final race. I really do hope Kita chan wins her final race, the arima kinen.

So they finally decided to do full powered retirement arc in 3 seasons. Really good.
Also as usual - public promise doesn't hold at all. Cheval saying "I will surpass your legacy" while this G1 race (minor but pretty obvious spoiler) was her only G1 win.
Creators of this anime do this a ton, the only fulfilled promise anecdoticaly was Twin Turbo "I will beat Rice", everything else never was fulfilled.

The fated day has come: Kitasan Black will retire after the Arima Kinen, but will give it her all for the races till then due to her hitting her best and could not pace any better. This news shocks everyone, much less Team Spica who has been watching her closely while her condition slowly deteriorates, as well as her rivals of Satono Crown and Cheval Grand, both of which have never really beaten her in races before.

Clearly the strongest girl of their generation, Cheval Grand feels both jealous and insulted about how Kitasan Black just made headwaves, only to give it up thereafter. And it all reveals in the Japan Cup, despite being a domestic race with both local and foreign horse girls. Every horse is fighting for the good race, as Cheval Grand attempts to beat Kitasan Black, for someone who has always been following her trail from behind all this while. And sheer desperation from the rival horse girl, lands her debut G1 win and a congrats from said champion.

After the Japan Cup, the Arima Kinen will be Kitasan's very last race, will the scales of luck land her final victory?

An emotional episode, I quite enjoyed the rivalry journey that amps this episode a lot.

Verxina refers to Gentildonna, she could never beat her. They ran in 7 races (6 G1 and 1 G2). Gentildonna won 6 (5 G1 and 1 G2) of those races and one that Verxina finally surpassed her, came third after Gold Ship.

I never post anything here, but as a fanatic UMA player who watches netkeiba to know the records of each horse, I had to respond hahaha.

It’s times like these I’m proud to be someone that never skips an OP or ED for any show no matter how much I like the songs, that one moment where Cheval Grand was the one to say “Makenai” (or however you’d spell that phrase) instead of Kitasan was a great moment, love little things like that, it was then I knew today she’d be the one to win lol, and win she did, it was very nice to see. Only upsetting part tho, is she won with these circumstances surrounding Kitasan nearing retirement, it looks like the overall tone of this season’s finale will be bittersweet but I was still happy to see Cheval Grand finally get a win, that and her shouting that she loved Kitasan as she chased her ass was very funny to me lol.

I also liked that short bit of the cute glasses horse girl who I think was called “Royce and Royce”, she had nice artwork there too before what I’m assuming would have been an ad break on Japanese TV. And lastly, man it’s very upsetting to see all this stuff with Kitasan going down, we started the show with her as a happy and joyous horse girl and she pretty much speed ran to retirement because no other MC but her retired in the course of their own story lol, but hey I do really like that we’re seeing this aspect of horses told in cute anime girl form, and with next week being the final episode we’ll be closing the book on another great season of Uma Musume, as of rn I think Season 2 is still my favorite but this has been a really good time.

Air Groove's answer to Duramente's regret that the dream will be fulfilled in another way may refer the Japan Cup this year where Kita's son Equniox destoryed Duramente's 3 children there
On the new umamusume Royce and Royce: her IRL dad is Tony Bin(just like Air Groove and Winning Ticket), she is a peer of BNW but her first win comes in the middle of classic year, then in autumn 1994 she took 3rd in Tenno Sho autumn and Japan Cup, at the last she retried without major race victory after the Tenno Sho Spring 1996 which is mentioned in CM before the race in E9 and Sakura Laruel won(PS: her owner initially want to name her Rolls and Royce but is rejected by JRA for avoiding trademark issues and then use Royce and Royce instead)

Good episode, but once again I feel this was kinda lame for people that doesn't know about the real horses.

Just like before, Crown won against Kita because "Kita wasn't feeling well", now the same happens again, Cheval wins against Kita because "Kita was feeling even worse", that's what I get from this, is not like when we see umas run and the one that loses does because she had an injury mid-race, this legit made me think that Cheval only won because of that, because Kita feeling bad wasn't able to train enough and had problems to keep her pace in the race.
I know about the irl horses, I know it wasn't like that, but that's what this episode kinda hints at, especially in the part where Cheval is looking at Kita having troubles with her training and she literally says "I'll finally pass the person I've seen in front of me all this time!", to me that sounds like "Now that you are feeling like total shit, I can FINALLY beat you" lol

Also, I don't really care about Cheval, I don't like her, they try to make her likable being all shy and sad and I'm ok with characters like that but I don't really see the appeal in her, especially when her sisters are way more enjoyable characters, I wish we had seen more of them.

Anyways, I loved that Crown called Kita her rival, because she should be the real rival to Kita, not Dia, that's how people thought about the irl horses back in the day.

I'm sad this will end next week, I wonder how much time untill we get another season... so far they haven't show us characters to hint at the next plot, unlike in the previous seasons with Teio and Kita/Dia.
Sorry if my english is bad (っ˘▽˘)っ~~~
Btw, cry about it.

Thank goodness I was paying attention while watching the OP, where Cheval Grand switched places with Kitasan Black before saying "Makenai - I won't lose".

It felt fitting here as Cheval Grand was able to finally get her first G1 victory at the Japan Cup, while playing a powerful insert song during the closing stages of the race itself. Seeing how Cheval felt towards Kitasan Black was interesting, as she never felt that close due to how different their personalities are. Not only that, but racing and finishing behind Kitasan many times only made Cheval's obsession in winning a G1 race even stronger than before.

It only adds to the bittersweet feeling that this race had, as while Cheval did finally beat Kitasan Black for the 2nd time (The first time was during the race a few episodes ago where Cheval did finish ahead of Kitasan Black, but both finished towards the back of the pack), but it happened when Kitasan Black wasn't at her peak anymore. While some people would love to beat their rival at their peak, if that first goal isn't achievable, then being able to beat them at all is still something that they will do everything they can to make it come true, which is what I'm thinking of with Cheval Grand here, as she declares how much she hates and loves Kitsasan Black while chasing after her.

Only one episode to go, where we'll see Kitasan Black race for the last time at the Arima Kinen. I hope that she can end with a victory, even though her form isn't as good as it used to be. It would make for an exciting way to wrap up this 3rd season, that's for sure! =)

Also fun fact - Sheval Grand literally translates as "big horse" from french.
Despite this name horse itself was pretty small, 470kg, similar to Tokai Teio size.
You can compare this to Kitasan Black who was 540kg at the end of her career, really massive horse with really few G1 winners being bigger and none of them won as much as Kitasan.
The record for the biggest weight for G1 winner belongs to Hishi Akebono - 560 kg, and you can see her in every single shot as the gym where she is doing squats with some insane weights (and in opening also).

The level of this series has fallen So drastically. Why does it feel/look like they NEVER age? And what happens with uma musume after graduating from races? Shouldn't they become celebrities? Haven’t watched the last episode, but I’m rating this an 8. Not sure why it’s received worse reviews than the previous seasons…I’ve enjoyed the…changes? Not really much of a change. But instead of focusing MOSTLY on one girl, the friendship/rivalry of the two main characters had me so much more interested than the previous seasons.

@kurooganeko It's very jarring to see these past generation horses still being there even if they're not "running" anymore (besides the "Dream League" thing)

But just gotta handwave this issue as it's a mobage where all the umas can race each other anytime lel
