This anime wasn’t anything ground breaking, but I enjoyed it all the same. I think my main criticism would be that by attempting to leave some concepts open ended for philosophical reflection, some episodes felt like they didn’t have anything to really say beyond a thought experiment. I wouldn’t mind a season two, but with these kind of animes it’s hard to tell if there’s even a chance of that happening.

Story seems to have potential but made me more disappointed as the story goes. With the theme, it has potential to touch subjects between humanoid, robots, and human. So far robots difference between humanoid is only that they don't have 'free will' and can't age, while humanoid is treated like human which can age and die. What makes a humanoid 'humanoid' and robot a 'robot'? Can a robot become humanoid and vice versa?
The boyfriend robot seems pretty humanoid enough, pretty hard to distinguish him between normal robot.
Can a human become humanoid? What does Nana categorize as? A robot? AI? Human seems comfortable enough to get into relationship with humanoid and things like Nana, will this make humanity perish later? Why humanoid need human emotion and appearance? If they can erase their feeling easily, why bother having a feeling?

The story has too many potentials made it feel dumb that the MC focuses too much with his mother copy. Even same copy, they are different person. Will he love Risa''s copy same as Risa? If not, why bother searching his mother copy?

That's because at first, it didn't seem that self-evident or intuitive, until Risa's case and the conclusion of that little girl's case. Before that Sudo's motive to reach out to the copy of his mother seemed (at least to me) very vague. There was the possibility of him wanting to bring her back and form a family bond with her because he couldn't do so with his real mother (who was in jail). But then later on we learned in the Tui Fui episode, that it seems illegal to at least some degree for the copy to be around the original one. There was also that possibility at the beginning of the series of Sudo wanting to simply bring the copy back to justice and free his mother, but thinking back Tui Fui episode that might or might not be a plausible choice. Then there was also that, he could have destroyed her mother's copy because it wasn't his mother but just a copy. Only the last episode shed light of things how Sudo's view of things changed and it seemed your guess about Sudo wanting to reach his mother because of that seemed plausible. But, Sudo's friend made a valid point: what if his mother's copy has been used for very, very bad things? Will he still see his mother's copy as his 'mother'? Not to mention, at least to me, it seemed Sudo had a very complex relationship with his real mother... So, it just made me wonder, what was Sudo's original reason for wanting to find the copy of his mother? That 'reason' could easily sway his current resolve we saw at the end of the last episode, because his new one, which is 'the copy of my mother is still my mother' could be changed/shattered, if he finds out his mother's copy has indeed been used for evil things... I don't know, that just made me think all that.

But thank you for your thoughts, as it helped me to realize at least Sudo's current state of mind of things.

I'm also confused why he's obsessed with his mother's copy. The data is already copied which means even if he destroy or bring back one of her mother copy, she can be reused many times just like the bomber case he explained to the kid. Will destroying her mother copy prevent further copies to emerge? Either the character didn't realize this or maybe the story author doesn't realize the flaw in the plot?

top 3, really, how many anime did you watch, it was not bad but don't lie to yourself if that was top 3 of summer 2023 ...

Not only for the summer of 2023 season. It's currently in my top three for the year of 2023 as a whole, so far vying with only Tengoku Daimakyou to determine whether I will give it the #1 or #2 spot. Other than maybe one or two other series, nothing else I've seen even comes close.

I must admit the ending was quite disappointing because it still left me with the question: why Sudo is so obsessed with finding his mother's copy? I mean, if the episode had shown him finding her, maybe we could have gotten the answer or maybe it was hinted at some point and I just didn't get it, but even so... it left me to wonder why, because that was the "hook" of this show and I believe at the end of the show we should have gotten an answer to that.

I never took that as something which required an explicit answer or explanation, because it seems self-evident and intuitive enough. The copy of his mother is basically an identical reproduction of his mother; her consciousness and personality. If it was your mother, and presumably you have at least a decent relationship with and care about and for her, why would anyone ever want a version of their mother out in the world abandoned suffering, possibly being trafficked around, held captive, abused by criminals, etc.? Isn't that natural?

Hum, i see, that deserves deep conversations but we are not here for that.

I don’t know if other people think that it was better than Vinland etc but, I’m sure that you have your reasons to consider this one like the best of the year.

@otakuweek I see, no worries, i take no offence. My main reason for upvoting this anime is topic - i directly work in AI field and many issues, both technical and ethical, i found relatable. Ofc we're still far away from anime setting, but not THAT far. Hope it helps.
Maybe we will meet on another forum and have opinions exchange again. ( : See you in Fall 2023

I knew it after my first comment that personal feelings, emotions etc are also why an anime can make us feel something that the neighbor will probably don’t understand.

I think about the episode with the old man who decided to work harder when he saw the AI do a great job etc

Thanks to you for sharing your thoughts.

Sudo tried to push Risa away to keep her safe, but he just couldn't do it! While this simultaneously feels like an epilogue and a prologue to a new arc, I'm certain this show definitely is a sleeper hit.

I'm glad Sudo realized his mistake and had a proper goodbye with Risa.

I'll give it to him, he's walking around that warzone like a boss.

They can't leave us hanging like this. We need a season 2. This is easily one of the most underrated anime of the year. I'm in tears with how well done this is. It may not have the best animation but it's damn good.

9 out of 10.
I haven't updated in years but now I have changed that. I'll be free soon.

I really enjoyed this series. I know a lot of people will complain about how it leaves a lot of questions unanswered but I think the ideia is to give more questions than answers because it's talking about the future of humanity and we don't have a lot of those answers. Maybe a lot of us won't even be alive to see a world like that but it can make us think how it could be.

I don't think they'll have budget to do a second season but the manga is finished, those who are interested can check the ending there.

They do look similar, but Michi's eyecolor closer to mc's mom. Mysteries remain about the mom copy, and who's his birth parents.
Nice Sudo finally gained empathy for Risa. Quite liked the AI philosophies explored, some freakishly similar to modern times, while often keeping things morally ambiguous. I get it's episodic, but rushing multiple stories in an episode feel too disjointed, when the better plotlines were on the main cast. Real good ending but wish for s2 and see bear & Perm kun again.

The show was like “here’s a plot—forget about it while we do anthology shit and try to be deep but it’s really all just PHIL101—oh, here’s the plot again for the last two episodes”

I'm sad it's such an open ending, but I really think the show isn't as bad as the score says.
Really interesting concepts, and the story popped up now again, too.
Would love a season 2, but I doubt it happens.

Its one of quite realistic sci-fi anime that i ever watch. And our future world is kinda toward this anime setting, usage of AI is quite massive in past year with the introduction of AI picture and Chat GPT.
Also it's possible that our world 50 years later will become like in this anime.

I treated this anime as both SoL AND Sci-fi anime which is my first time experience, when ignored the little plot about Sudo's mother.

8/10

  • This episode consists of chapter 85, 86, 87 of the source material.
  • The telephone call scene is anime original.
  • "My existence may be defined not by inside of myself but by the relations between others." This anime original line would be derived from the final episode of Evangelion that depicted such a theme in deep.
  • Seen in the forum conversation, it seems certain percentage of people don't like episodic style of the show. If you are not that type of person and like this series, you may like Fly me to the moon too. (It's utter coincidence, but the title/song is the ending song of Eva)
  • You can know how 3 series of comics began and ended (or was axed) by reading the author's columns in "Blue Age" vol.5. It's kind of amusing.
@kuroneko99
You said it consists of chapter 85-87, does that mean that the manga ends on the same cliffhanger before it continues in it's sequel Red Queen? Just making sure.

Yes, the source material also ended like the same. It's not unusual to end story like this. "Red queen" is almost totally different thing.
Incidentally, the style is called "oretachi no tatakai wa korekarada" ending. It would be... "our story just begins here and now" ending.

@kuroneko99 I was asking because I am currently preparing some stacks with different anime and their source material - like if they were fully adapted, only used as advertisement or only a part of it (like here, the first manga-series got adapted so far, while the sequel didn't). Thanks a lot for your help. =)
