I was planning to watch this cause the background art in the trailer looked breath taking, and the manga had a decent score. but this is relatively low, and is going lower by the day. so, I wanna know why that is? so I can decide if I still want to watch it or not. |

Nothing's wrong. It's just that peoples rate after one episode, and that since it's an adaptation of a novel series, the first few episodes are part of the main story prologue, and put the setting in place, as well as introduce the characters. due to that, peoples who want a story to skip prologues and jump "right into the action" are angry at it and calling it trash, just because not a lot happens yet. Most probably for those who stayed, the second episode is going to calm down quite a few complaints already; even though we are still, technically, in the prologue. I fully expect the score to go up throughout the season, proving that peoples who judge shows after one episode are, once again, wrong. |

My bait finally caught a butt-hurt fan after 20 minutes. I use strong words to display my level dissatisfaction. Also I don't live in the US, therefore I don't care about 'offending' anyone. If I were to elaborate on my first comment, then I'd say that the type of writing like "she's special, but new to this environment which I am insanely proficient in, I must fix/help her till the end (or along those lines" is the worst shit ever. Now pacing is just a common problem, which is a result of not giving a fuck (kinda). I have not read the source material, but even I could how they were flying over the content just to include the most important bits and pieces leaving behind a weird wasteland. Pacing can be a big turnoff for many, but is so easy to fix if you give a fuck. I guess here they kinda don't. Hope you got your heartaches answered \(^_^)/ |

Just saying but contrary to what someone said in there, there isn't especially a problem with the pacing as of yet (episode 2 is especially good on that regard), and there isn't especially any "retarded character dynamics" in play currently. I'd say that you can safely ignore those complaints, at least for now. |

I have heard of rating after 1 or 3 or 5 episodes, or just rating before even watching, that is completely unfair for the creators. I think the option to rate an anime should only be available to those who have watched all the episodes, because that’s the only way to fairly each anime. I have had both experiences where the first few episodes are… 1. not that good, but then it becomes a great anime series 2. really good at the beginning, but then later episodes ruin the anime It is just not right that people act this way. |

It acclaims on being a realistic-fantasy an individual could relate to but not a normal individual from what is to be seen. What can you call it, bad storytelling? I would personally prefer for characters to act their age and not throw irrational and petulant fits for the sake of made-up convenience. That giant monster is reminiscent of something I own so I don’t want to hurt it even if it comes straight at my life? I, who was thrown onto the battlefield long since memory serves— replete with scars and nagging memories can exist alongside these seemingly oblivious bunch of characters with no mark of what I am? We living in seclusion— an elite in a world of worthy bear no arrogance lest sense of superiority? It’s a hot mess which may have had done if it went the path of pandering towards a shounen audience rather than cornering itself in a no-man’s land. |

While Mashle's story and environment was just copy paste of Harry Potter which is also the case here but they have made some changes. But the way they have animated, the scenes, the angle or how they have presented it to us is similar to Harry Potter. I'm living through nostalgia watching this anime, the characters are intresting, the world building is good so far and even the story has been good and entertaining till now. I think I am going to read the LN after completing the anime and as for Eminence in Shadow. The whole show revolves around Cid being the shadow mastermind and not school or magical aspect of the world. Even the school that he is attending is just a small part of his story and nothing more. It was just there to make it more intresting. By the way I feel the story of Eminence was good but it was in a way similar to Overlord. They both are similar in that aspect. Overall this show is good and those background art added with their animation art style is really giving me Harry Potter vibes, which itself is enough for me to give this show a chance. I don't understand why people are hating this anime, this anime has been really interesting for me with that magical and mysterious world appeal. They both are similar to Harry Potter but they only at the beginning or just in some instances like world building or anything else but their story has diverted from it at the beginning itself and they are good. |

My anime list’s audience isn’t the best at accurately appraising a series. This series isn’t perfect. But this type of series typically have a hivemind of likeminded individuals that compare this series with another series they adore as a benchmark. Hypothetically, that benchmark series viewers praise may not be all what it’s cracked up to be for me and prefer ‘this’ style. Personally, I know I will never take romcoms recommendations from myanimelist. Some of the most greatest romcoms ratings on here to me are straight up garbage. And the straight up garbage romcoms that members on this site brings up, can be pure gold for me. If you acknowledge that series like this with particular tags as a genre have a cult following to a particular series as a benchmark, then you should watch that series and determine if it’s for you. If that benchmark isn’t for you, then you’ll need to be more open minded with other series that have a low rating because you can be missing out on gold that you’ll appreciate that the majority of the members on this site doesn’t. I think this series is good. Nothing about this series warrants anything less than a good rating for the anime outside of a few nitpicks. What I like most about this series is that’s not a harem. Harems are beloved on this site, and if it was a harem you can bet a huge positive rating jump. |

What's wrong with it? Generic character designs; the score of an anime that just started airing depends on art and animation even more than completed anime. The impact of good writing on the score will become more evident in the long run, even though I can already see that this anime has potential. |

As someone who haven't read the novel or the manga, my problem is the pacing is kinda quick. I feel like some scenes are happening fast that is kinda hard to feel the dynamic of the characters' interaction, which by far is one thing I like in this anime. |

It’s good so far but it does seem a little generic. All of the characters are pretty one-sided atm, and even Oliver and Nanao, who are the MC and deuteragonist respectively, don’t really have depth beyond “vague hidden backstory that doesn’t impact their behavior.” I honestly do like it (preemptively giving it a 7), but it’s gotta do some development in order to stand out more. |

don't mind the ratings for literally only 2 episodes. it's impossible to judge a series by the prologue alone. i've read further, and i say it's pretty good. just don't give a shit about scores and watch what you want, it's not like anyone can change that. |

I haven't rated it yet, as I never rate until I've seen at least 3 episodes. But as of now, it would score a 4. For complaints, it's mostly how generic everything is. Your average goody two shoes fantasy mc alongside similarly stereotypical characters (both looks and personality) in the prestigous, low-administration Magic school, where they somehow become popular and get bullied by some evil Senpais. Then add the overflowing cast of six protagonists from the get go on top of that. For the good points, there were hints at some more interesting plot strings revolving the past of the characters and it could also develop intersting debates, for example regarding the treatment of magic creatures. However, if there's one thing seasonal anime has taught me: Don't bother with the rating. Out of 6 non-sequels I rated 8 or higher last season, My Home Hero was the highest at 7.04 mean score. Meanwhile the one's over 7.5 got a 6, a 5 and a 3. If you believe the synopsis for this seems interesting, just go and watch it. Or wait until it finished airing and read some reviews from those who completed it. |

The adaptation just doesn't look like anything special to me, but I give most seasonal shows 3 episodes, unless they really disappoint me. |

Honestly, what I'm getting from people being down on it is that seem hate it just existing the same way other shows are, but those shows they are watching somehow good and this is bad, shrug. Like Jujutsu Kaisen is as basic as shounen as you can get using the criteria criticisms some people are giving Spellbaldes but it get a pass anyway. Humans at end of day just irrational about media no matter how they pretend to have a deeper meaning behind they words. MAL is probably the premiere offender. They really know nothing about how the plot will play or where the characters will be a couple eps. Even if Spellblades actually do several things different than other magic academics it get glossed over because vibes about LN medium. If your not wiling to engage material and accept certain things are (for now) demanding Like Spellblades areadly setting it apart with: -Not having cast of haremettes surround the MC -Having a even gender ratio of males & females with distinct personalities and ground characteristics -Everyone seemly having there own goal rather depending MC to give them one -Solid world building which includes bits of historical & mechanical lore about its culture and magic in teh setting -Plenty of hints not everything as seems, hell look what happened Nanao after the sword duel, where did our unflappable genki girl? What anime only would even predicted she side like that? Like calling the characters stereotypical means nothing to me when no watching a single in show 2023 that doesn't have characters that been done before, but people will conveniently force a standard on to a show they don't care about over one they do even at glance it has the same problem. Even wasn't LN reader who knew where the story would go, I don't see issue with show as it is 3 episodes in. Its pretty well constructed and slowing accumulating the viewer to world and characters in its introductory phase instead of primarily building itself on action, random plot twists until left nothing but a shallow show with hollow foundations and a bunch of spectacle because it doesn't give a crap. |

To OP: DO NOT use MAL ratings to decide if you should watch a show or not. Everyone has different tastes. It is perfectly fine to like an unpopular anime/LN. If you follow MAL ratings, you will notice most of the popular anime or highest rated anime are battle-shounens because majority of MAL users are teenagers who watches battle-shounens. I have grown out of battle-shounens. Most of my favourites have MAL ratings lower than 8 and less than 100k in terms of popularity. I am a LN reader (and have not watched the anime) and I have mentioned in other threads mentioning that Reign Of The Seven Spellblades is a combination of Harry Potter, Made In Abyss and Berserk, not the generic magic school LN we see in Mushoku Tensei, Magicmaster, etc. I have checked your MAL profile so I understand your taste. You tend to enjoy death games, thrillers, dangerous adventures, etc. Reign Of The Seven Spellblades have all these things that you enjoy. I noticed you also like time travel. You can look into Unnamed Memory (LN) and Muv-Luv (VN). If you want more recommendations, you can always ask source readers (like myself). Hopes this answers your question. |

This is refreshing and every characters background have some dept to it, especially oliver and nanao girl, it kinda dark from what i read. All characters are likeable for now. Yes they are similar but so is every magical school anime in that regard. I don't know about others but I was getting Harry Potter vibes from this anime. You should give the ancient magus bride a try. The 2nd season’s setting is in a school for magic. It has a great story especially if you like fantasy. |

The biggest problem to me is that the adaptation doesn't necessarily sell the supposed darker tone of the series, it all feels very generic. |
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that. |

It's just super mediocre so far. The characters and their interactions feel like half of whatever was written in the novels was left out in the anime. The animation and voice-acting quality is simply subpar. I do feel like pacing is all right for a light novel adaptation, which is to say that it is somewhat slow but not terribly so. All in all it's average at best so far. |

6.8 is a fair score for this show. It has some good and bad. Good: -Animation is great -Decent world building Bad: -Character interactions seem forced/unnatural -Story is mid (so far) -A bit too generic I see a lot of people comparing this to JJK. I do agree that there are lot of similarities, both are supernatural schools after all. However JJK slightly edges over this show in most aspects. -Better animation -Better action -More interesting characters, and interactions feel less forced (although this is an issue with JJK also imo) -Better world building -Story is less generic (although still shouneny) All this considered I think JJK scoring 1 to 2 points higher than this show is fair. |

APolygons2 said: I was planning to watch this cause the background art in the trailer looked breath taking, and the manga had a decent score. but this is relatively low, and is going lower by the day. so, I wanna know why that is? so I can decide if I still want to watch it or not. You could watch and judge it by yourself with 3 episode rule. Personally, this anime didn't gave much impact to me. Its pretty bland and somehow weirdly confusing, but people keep telling me that this anime is a slowburn type so i keep watching for now. until now 6/10 is fair enough |

Well, don't trust MAL too much. Lately the scoring system has gotten weird. Maybe it changed something or the popularity of anime changed things. Anyway, you can easily see that several anime are getting 6 and several 8, even 9. It's pretty unregulated. And the main factor, the story is being built little by little, it's not a shounen with a super bad guy to defeat right away. The protagonist also didn't show himself as a "badass" right away. There was also nothing extremely flashy and exaggerated. These are triggers that people are conditioned to expect. |
