it was satisfying to see people acknowledge Thorfinns power, that said this whole ep had such an epic aura if you get what I mean. I loved the animation style they sued for canute here, made his speech more powerful and it gave hella goosebumps

Amazing episode for obvious reasons. This episode lived up to the hype. Also, I don't see many people pointing out how great of a job Einar's VA did here. This guy should get an award or something.

This was no doubt one of my favorite episodes of this season.
I have been eagerly waiting for this.

I legit got chills during this scene!

At one point we see the vikings scream and yell, considering the fight as a game... right after this scene the air changes...
It is not a game anymore. Nobody is laughing anymore
Phenomenal

And the most awaited scene

The whole interaction kept me at edge
Finally some understanding behind Canute's actions

In a sense we can say that both Thorfinn and Canute are comrades but on the other hand... their approaches are totally different, even though their objective is same

And finally, the most awaited dialogues
"You are not my enemy! I have no enemies!"

Thorfinn and Canute have essentially become the complete opposite of how they respectively were in season 1. Both of them make good points with their respective arguments, but the world doesn't operate in a way that its problems can be so simply solved with one ideal or the other. Loved seeing Einar get his two cents in with what he had to say to the almighty King. In the end though, Canute isn't going to budge when it comes to taking the farm.

"I don't have any enemies." Chills, man. Goosebumps. Just peak.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

The 100 punches from Bear Killer Drott to Thorfinn, the latter's used to treatment worse than this before, it's just a matter of how long he can last. The "first method" that he's looking for, and with Snake's distraction, Thorfinn got a solid hit from Drott. But he's not going to stop there, and despite Snake's persistence, Thorfinn remains strong to finish what he started, giving everyone a shock, and no one, not even Einar, can interfere with this resolution. The remaining 68 hits completed in total awe and slience with Drott all but exhausting his strength, and he has no choice but to commend his mettle proving his mantle once as Canute's former guards. To which Thorfinn replied to Thegn of the useless feud of Ketil and Canute akin to Hnefatafl a.k.a the Vikings' Game, there's no need to shed much bloodshed over this, and the famous "I don't have any enemies" liner that cements his masterclass boldness. With this, Thorfinn is given way to see Canute, along with Einar.

The wrought of the war being made true to Einar, and the two rivals come face to face after 4 years, as king and slave respectively that time has changed them from boys to men. Despite Ketil's men instigating the war, Thorfinn requesting Canute to back off doesn't work, and they won't until each and every one of Ketil's men is killed. Einar retaliates against Canute, with Thorfinn's promise from eons ago, and the king of the Vikings not akin to God's omnipotent power, humans are designed to go against God's plans if they want to build paradise on Earth. A rebellion, the King of Rebellion and his group of thegns, this is what sin does to them, and if he doesn't save the Vikings, he cannot build paradise and a strong foundation to fight the omniscient being. Even then, he'll still killl people, as how Einar's family was killed by Kings Ethelred and Sweyn.

King Canute is absolute: Ketil's farm is essential to his worldbuilding, and unless Thorfinn deals with him, it's paradise on Earth, at the expense of sin.

Masterclass episode, as expected.

What an excellent episode. From soundtrack to character acting and visual aspects, everything was top tier. To see Canute have a whole different perspective on the world and his "Paradise" that he wants to built. He's a totally different person from 4 years ago. Thorfinn taking those 100 punches was crazy though.

I hate vinland saga

I have mondays off, and usually just spend it chilling and watching anime and such. Or at least I try to, until vinland saga came around. Now every monday when I see the newest episode, I can't watch anything for the rest of the day because anything else I watch just seems like sh*t in comparison

"I have no enemies
Favorite episode so far! He endured till the last breath, which shows how much he values Peace over anything else. But like they say, there's a price for peace, and there's always bad for an equivalent good. Now thorfinn is on the peaceful side, and how he grows from now on, and which path he chooses is something we are curious about!

About what Canute said, my reaction was like "is that it?" 😑 I didn't know his peace is only for the Vikings.

I HAVE NO ENEMIES. I got chills honestly.

For an episode of mostly dialogue, this was such an amazing and grand episode of massive proportions. Thorfinn taking the 100 punches, and then getting to meet Canute, just perfect. The tension was at an all time high during the dialogue with Canute, and I love how neither side backed down on their ideals. The world is a balance of these two extremes, one side where killing may bring utopia, and one side where peace brings utopia. There is no easy way out or answer to this confrontation, and I look forward to its resolution immensely. Props to the staff, and studio MAPPA for such a masterfully executed episode.

Thorfinn is just going to get beaten up because he's an idealist. I've watched 15 episodes of Viking Farming simulator with a handful of decent episodes after that. what the point in any of this if he's not willing to fight for anything. really poor, I'm so disappointed with this series.

What a powerful episode man. I am still shaking after what I witnessed!

- Drott is busy beating the shit out of Thorfinn, but Thorfinn is rolling with the punches to soften the blow on his body

- On 32nd punch he gets distracted due to Snake and Olmar's appearance and gets punched hard

- Snake tries to convince him to stop saying it's impossible, but Thorfinn counter questions him asking if he even tried to talk before raising the sword

- "Why are you just standing there, middle-part? Your fists hurt less than being bitten by a bug! Sixty-eight more. Get it over with. I am a busy man, People are waiting for me"
GOOSEBUMPS, FUCKING GOOSEBUMPS ALL OVER THE BODY!

- 100 punches complete, Drott accepts defeat and apologizes Thorfinn. Wulf comes and talks with Thorfinn

- "I can't hit someone when I'm trying to negotiate for peace. I just met all of you today. We have no reason to hate each other. So why do we have to hit each other? It's stupid. It's just Canute and Ketil who are feuding with each other. The two leaders could settle this over a game of hnefatafl. There's no need to gather all these men and shed all this blood."

"We just met today. You are not my enemies. I don't have any enemies."

Fucking powerful, such a mature mentality. I already knew about this dialogue because of the memes, but with full context, it feels so well thought out and deep.

- Wulf provides passage towards Canute. Thorfinn calls Einar to come with him. Both go and talk to Canute

- Lot of back and forth between Thorfinn and Canute. On God, on paradise, on suffering, on saving Vikings vs saving those who suffered from brutality of Vikings.

- Canute's refusal to leave the farm, he surrounds Thorfinn with his guards. What's gonna be next? Episode end.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this was too good. Peak Seinen. I finally am able to acknowledge why is VS compared to Berserk and Vagabond, and it rightfully deserves so.

5/5 episode. Next episode is called "Two Paths". I am not really sure what's gonna happen, but hopefully the negotiation comes to a peaceful resolution, otherwise it's gonna be pretty bad for the farmers.

Haven't completed berserk but vagabond and vinland saga can definitely help anyone who is willing to change.
Musashi is too far for me to reach but I relate a lot with matahachi , his latest resolve before the hiatus gave me a lot of motivation to change slowly at my pace instead of setting unrealistic goals .
You know the funny thing is that in terms of character development, Vagabond's farming arc and Vinland Saga's farming arc are so similar. Of course there are a few differences in terms of storytelling, but the emotions you feel, the growth you get and the tranquility you feel after experiencing both arcs are nearly identical. Both are just fantastic.

Berserk on the other hand is definitely more on the brutal side. But that's still whole another peak of peaks. Truly peak Seinen manga, you should definitely read it if you can handle the gore.

Oh no, such a terrible tragedy!

Anyways, did you all notice that Canute's tide sequence is based on a historical story of the real Canute calling for the tide to stop? It's the same thing but in a different context, Google "Canute and the tide".

Like father like son. Drott recognises Thorfinn, Son of Thors as a real warrior and he restates what his father taught him; that he has no enemies. Thorfinn's reunion with Canute had some parts of the dialogue re-arranged. Not sure why they cut straight to the far shot instead of having Thorfinn return the comment about their appearances changing in the four years since. It's really fascinating that the fable of "King Canute and the Waves", commonly regarded as being about humility, is interpreted in such a way as to tie it to his plans for paradise on Earth.

The idea that what you took away from this episode is that Thorfinn is not willing to fight for anything is wild. Were you watching this show with a blindfold and earplugs on?

This show told us what it was about in season 1 within the first four episodes; it's about rebuking violence as an option to resolve problems. The closest person in this entire series to being "a true warrior," Thors, said that he himself wasn't a true warrior because he relied on his sword and fists to resolve problems. On his path to being a true warrior, that's as far as Thors got, but he wanted better for Thorfinn, and funnily enough, so did Askeladd. When he, Askeladd, asked Thorfinn what he would do after his death, and how he would live his life, he told Thorfinn to go beyond Thors. Thors and Askeladd wanted Thorfinn to surpass Thors, and in this episode he did. He became more of a warrior than Thors. He didn't raise his weapons and fists to fight someone, he had the COURAGE and strength to force his opponents to respect him without it. This is the most defining moment of the series, and if you and others like you can't see that, stop watching shows with any nuance in them. Focus only on shounen battle series because they might be fast paced enough to keep up with your attention spans.

Love the man Thorfinn has become. And Einar is right, Canute is a hypocritical lunatic.

I think it goes deeper than that for Einar. To call Canute a lunatic is to disregard his goals and all that he has accomplished thus far. Could he have formed an agreement with his brother? Could he even have gone to Ketil peacefully and asked for an increase in resources? Both options were viable for the long-term. However, Canute is as aware of his own mortality and weakness as he is of the insurmountable goal he has put before himself. In the face of Einar's criticism, he needs to remain steadfast or risk losing value to his men. Does that justify anything he does? No. But, like Thorfinn, it's not about sanity or insanity, hypocrisy or righteousness. Canute is doing what he believes to be right.

It also works the other way for Thorfinn, too. That "first option" was viable much earlier than now. It's that for people like Thorfinn and Wulf, they can see why Canute can't back down now. It would suggest to his own forces that he wasted all that time and resources for a needless campaign just to swing his junk around. It's the behavior of an incompetent leader who will throw his own armies at an impossible task just to prove a point. In the matters of leadership, if you answer defiance with violence, you need to fully commit without hesitation. Anything else will plant the seed of doubt in others and weaken a leader's integrity.

Canute may be a hypocrite, but he's far from insane. He's aware of the path he has chosen and makes no justifications. He simply doesn't see a point in addressing the cold, hard truth of what his actions will inevitably lead to. Someone like Canute will always make enemies who seek his head, and he is prepared for it. He's the mirror opposite to Thorfinn, whom has no enemies and will never find any as long as he walks his current path.

"You've faced many life-and-death situations. But that does not make you an adult. Finding more fallen-out hairs on your pillow, watching your favorite stuffed-bread disappear from the convenience store... the accumulation of those little despairs is what makes a person an adult."-Nanami Kento

"When a piece of media is bad, it's much easier to nitpick the less significant things because they're seen as a part of the problem. Alternatively, it becomes more difficult to nitpick something like a masterpiece because even the flaws are seen as contributing to the overall quality of the media." -Paraphrasing Mauler
