The official website of the Made in Abyss television anime series revealed on Sunday that the second season, Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou (The Golden City of the Scorching Sun), is getting a sequel.

Made in Abyss adapts Akihito Tsukushi's adventure fantasy manga of the same title, which began its serialization in the Web Comic Gamma website in October 2012. Takeshobo published the 10th and 11th volumes on July 29.

The first anime series produced by Kinema Citrus aired in 13 episodes in Summer 2017. Kadokawa released two compilation films—subtitled Tabidachi no Yoake (Journey's Dawn) and Hourou Suru Tasogare (Wandering Twilight)—in January 2019.

The Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei sequel anime film opened in Japan in January 2020. Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou (The Golden City of the Scorching Sun) aired for 12 episodes in Summer 2022. Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime series and is streaming them on HIDIVE.

Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the manga in English in 2017 and shipped the 10th volume on May 3. The 11th volume is scheduled to release on April 18. The manga has also been published in multiple foreign languages, including Chinese, Mandarin, and Korean.

Made in Abyss ranked among the top 20 titles in the male readers' division in the 2018 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings and was nominated for the 11th Manga Taisho Awards.

This better not be some anime only filler.
There's almost no manga to adapt at this point

Assuming it will be anime filler cause the manga is like 3-5 chapters ahead last i checked. And the author just kinda drops the chapter whenever he feels like.
read Kingdom, read all of When They Cry and play Muv-Luv + Integrate if that ever releases or die

There's only like 3 chapters that are not adapted though. This is either a recap movie or they just announced it now and it will probably be released in like 2040 since the author said please live long and wait

This is very good news, but there isn't much manga content to adapt at the moment... Let's see how it goes.

1. People should stop miusing the world "filler". If they make a continuation without waiting for actual manga chapters to come out, it won't be a filler, just anime-original or loose adaptation. Filler is a part of the story that has zero effect on the actual plotline. So unless they decide to make a side-story that does not influence the further plot any way (like the last part of Noragami S1 for example), it won't be a filler.

2. The announcment clearly states that it will be a sequel. So moыt probably the staff and the mangaka just agreed to make the new story arc without waiting for him to actually draw it, only based on the drafts. Is it good or bad, hard to say.

Really? Wow. I’d never think another season would be greenlit this soon. I’m not a manga reader so I was surprised to see there were roughly three chapters ahead of where the anime left off. We’re either gonna have to wait a literal decade for this thing or it’s gonna be anime original content.

This isn't coming any time soon. Even if the mangaka picked up the pace and regularly released chapters again it'd take a few years.
He might give the script and designs to the studio though, and then the anime would take over the manga.

That's sooner than I thought. The manga only has like 3 or 4 chapters that come after the Season 2 anime and it takes forever for them to release a new chapter. I'm wondering if they'll have us wait till 2027 or make some anime original content instead.

Very surprising indeed considering there are a few chapters left in the manga, possibly an original content could be added.

another win for pain and suffering <3 but there's like hardly any new content to adapt right now. if there's little to no anime original content then it's gonna take ages..

wow. that surprised the crap outta me! :o totally out of the freaking blue! :o hmm... well if this follows the 'usual pre-production announcement' for an incomplete source... even IF the wording of the announcement says sequel... we're looking at 12 months MINIMUM... but i'm guessing it will be 18 months and we'll get more news in 6 months after this first announcement. maybe a teaser trailer with some early animation scenes of the OP/ED along with artist/title/song for said OP/ED.

looking at Kinema Citrus' present 'schedule'... all i'm seeing is a 3-studio cooperative anime airing right now 'Cardfight!! Vanguard: will+Dress Season 2'  Kinema CitrusGIFTanimation, and Studio Jemi are working on that one. so... PERHAPS... KC's 'Abyss' team is not working on Cardfight and working on this 'Abyss' sequel already?
just an ol school otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

This has the opposite problem that most series have. Most of the time a series never gets fully adapted from its source material but with this they're announcing more of the adaptation when there's nothing currently left to adapt, lol.

Expected, but still great to see!

I wonder how long it’ll take for this to come out though considering the anime is almost caught up to the manga.

Great news, but there is not enough manga chapters to make a new season, maybe an ova for 2 episodes.
Lastly I hear that mangaka was not able to draw the manga, bcs of heart condition or something like that.

Wasn't expecting an announcement so soon as there are not enough chapters for a new season. Maybe we'll get a movie in 2025 or something.

Guys, I have a theory, albeit a grim one.

Because of his heart problems or sth like that, the author probably wants to see his story finished before something bad happens, so I think he's planning to carry the story on in the anime rather than in the manga, so he can focus only in the script. Not the best option, but probably the fastest way to get a whole season, short-term.

I insist, take it with a grain of salt. Hope I'm wrong.

I don't want to see the contents of any more characters derears that are sewn closed... don't need to see any more blood or dismemberment so I'm good.

I like Tsukushi's character designs, his animal designs, his very unique take on humanoid-animals and how he depicts his worlds, his artwork. And thought S1 was a masterpiece.
But I'm not probably watching any more of MIA due to the problems above. Unless they big time tone it down with the body horror.

Based. Season 1 was great, s2 was one of the greatest disappointments I've seen in 10 years of anime. MID IN ABYSS.

I don't watch as much anime as before...
