I remember really enjoying the bits we got in this episode, and they were great here too. I remember particularly loving Sakura’s introduction, the opening part with Ataru hiding from Lum in his disguise only for the news broadcast to have a picture of him wearing it really killed me in the original and it really got me here too, such a simple bit but really funny. Sakura’s VA is fantastic too, it sounded like she had a lot of fun during the exorcism part.

The 2nd half was also one I loved before, Lum absolutely beating the shit out of Ataru when she finds out the truth behind the ribbons is still hilarious lol, and interesting to see they slightly changed the designs of Ataru’s friend, they look great tho. And it looks like we’re already getting Mendou’s introduction, I remember it being a decent bit later in the original but knowing that this remake is like a highlight reel it’s understandable.

And I gotta mention one more time that I’m still super happy with this remake, can’t get over how beautiful it is and how great all the VAs are doing.

Why is everyone so damn violent? There'd be little to no issues if everyone was just normal and civil and used their words to solve their problems. 80's humor, I guess.

Noisy anime with crazy characters. The priestess part was something times nothing, it just introduced another crazy character.
And what pissed me off the most about this episode was the fact that these talatics stay at the protagonist's house, disturbing things when Lum and he are married. Very irritating! I hope that this protagonist and Lum improve in the future because both are annoying, one keeps crying and the other keeps torturing him like he was nothing.
I'll hold on a little longer to see if there's an improvement in the next episodes if not goodbye anime.

I loved this episode, it was more entertaining than the first one. Unpopular take, but I'm here for the fast pacing tbh, it works for me better than the manga. Lum is really cute, and she doesn't seem malicious, it's more like it is perfectly normal in her head to zap people as punishment, makes you wonder what her culture is like for her to think this way. The show and characters look amazing, the color palettes are everything I wanted to see in an anime, and I find the cast more endearing in this rendition. Everyone is a piece of shit in one way or another, but they're funny.
The kiss was great, and I also liked the part where Ataru escapes home!
The segment with the ribbon was my favorite, it was a lot of fun! Lum seems to like and trust Ataru a lot, as she finds comfort in being with him when her powers stop working, that's adorable. Sometimes Rumiko makes the situation too absurd for me to suspend my disbelief, but the jokes in this episode were the right amount of over-the-top while fitting with the way these characters would act, I like when the comedy comes from actions the cast takes that are believable to their individual personalities. Ataru never gifted his childhood friend and former girlfriend anything, that's low of him, they've known each other for a lifetime! Shinobu should just give up if this situation is bothering her so much, there's no point in keeping up with this cycle of getting hurt and hurting Ataru in return, but this is a Rumiko Takahashi story, so it's going to happen a lot despite what common sense would dictate.
I wasn't bothered by the screams, maybe I'm too used to Choromatsu's screaming to care about this. If you don't like silly antics made by deeply flawed and annoying characters, you should stay away from this show. I'm having a good time with it now, but I remember being done with the character's behavior and the incredibly slow development through big portions of the manga, so I understand if this is not for everybody. Also, most complaints about this adaptation surge from it being a reboot that only adapts a handful of stories; the pacing, the lack of some chapters, some lost jokes, censorship, and directing choices, it all stems from this fact. It's ok for anyone to compare it to the original, but you can't expect it to have the same pros the og had, both series just have very different directions. If you don't accept that this one is not like the og and it's not trying to be, you might have a hard time watching it. It's ok if this rendition is not everybody's cup of tea, though it is mine! This reboot is making me love Urusei Yatsura for the first time, not even Beautiful Dreamer did that for me, despite being a gorgeous movie.

Cool, we have three of the four Lum Stormtroopers, Chibi (Who's tall now), Perm (Who uses the old manga design, and was in the last episode), and Megane, two of which have already been corrupted by Lum's touch. All that's left is Kakugari, if he was even relevant enough to be born in this adaptation. Also, Kotatsu Neko is already here? No intro?

There were some things that this episode did better than the original, and some thing done worse. It was nice to see Ataru already starting to have feelings for Lum, even if they were subconcious at best. I liked it, though it seems that just like the original, it's gonna be a bit of a slow burn. Still excited to watch more, though.

Lol did anyone notice the Kyoukai no Rinne reference at the beginning of the episode when the teacher was reading an English passage aloud? XD I was thinking it had to be anime only since Urusei Yatsura was Rumiko's first major work, and she began Kyoukai no Rinne 22 years later. I feel like they put that there too because the female MC in Rinne is named Sakura, and in the same part of the episode, we meet Sakura the shrine maiden who exorcises (sliiiightly similar to what Rinne does). What a prefect reference, haha.

Oh my god, it was so obvious, and yet I somehow didn't notice. Talk about hiding something in plain sight. I was too preoccupied trying to find out whether they did or didn't add Kakugari to this anime.

Since last week I lost count of how many times I listened to its OP and its ED, both of them are really good. I really like how the remake has progressed so far. All new VA works well for this new adaptation. Satoshi (Megane) sounds so similar to its original. The episode title also pops up so seamlessly during the show. Ataru is still cultured for having Maison Ikkoku manga. I prefer Sakura's introduction and the Ribbon episode slightly more than its OG. It's much more faithful to the manga in terms of its characterization. I enjoy greatly how Lum is depicted in the last few minutes. The beating is quite satisfying and terrifying at the same time, especially with the chomp! That's some actual wrestling moves performed lol. A bit surprised to see Kotatsuneko sit beside Cherry on his tent this early. Kotastsuneko's origin story is quite tragic so I also want to see that get adapted too. The last member of the four gang squad Shutaro Mendo is also introduced pretty early and I really like that. It seems that they want to introduce all of the cast as quickly as possible so we can get more stories to be told. This is going to get even better and more hilarious once the whole cast is properly introduced in the show.

They toned down the jokes in this new remake, but it's still pretty enjoyable. Lol I remember in the manga when Megane and Chibi jump in Ataru's room when he's trying to un-tie the ribbon on Lum's horn, Megane high kicks Ataru on the head and shouts about how he's a fucking jerk 'cause he's not sharing Lum with them. Funniest shit ever

You didn't love the beginning episodes of the 80s anime? They were fairly close to what we've seen of the reboot. I also recommend the 2008 special if you haven't seen it yet!

The OG skipped 80 chapters by episode 2, this is how the anime has always been, they are adapting the manga completely out of order again (probably adapting just the important ones for this new adaptation in particular, there's a whole lot of dumb fun "filler" in Urusei Yatsura that makes no difference, thus why the order at time is irrelevant and they just shift the characters participating in the story just like that).

This one doesn't even skip as much by ep 2, they just adapted it chapter 4 and 16 earlier than the original (episode 5 and 9 in the OG), which was way further ahead beforehand anyway.

I don't think people are very familiar with this series at all in here. It's not even that important, and the pacing is just as insane in the manga.

It's not just chapters (that much had to be expected given how short this adaptation is). The really issue is all the other stuff they left out such as some jokes missing their punchline (e.g. the girl crying on TV about her missing mother was mainly upset because she was now the one who had to do all the housework due to how useless the father was).

The comedy and punchlines are on point, in this case they just skipped one of the gags. This happened in the original as well, specially because of aforementioned cast mix-up (some gags didn't work in the same way, so they either removed them as well, or just used a different one with another cast member).

Lastly, the pacing remains the same, if not some few seconds slower than the original adapted chapters (at times faster to give a new spin on certain other scenes), 2 chapters per episode.
If you don't like it, that's just not the kind of story nor humor for you. There is a reason why a lot of the wacky and horny Gainax/Trigger humor was heavily inspired by this series, and I'd suggest you to stay away of those as well, I guess.

Another great ep on my book, all in all. There's a lot of love in this new adaptation and it shows. There are a couple of easter eggs here and there too, always a delight from David Productions in this regard.

Just to clarify: I like the humor of the original series.... with few exceptions, I do not like the humor if this series. They keep feel the need to explain things and so on. Consider this: twostand up comedians say the same joke, but only one gets the laugh. The reason is the delivery. This why the humor of this version fails hard

Hm... Mind me asking how so exactly?
I don't think I understood well what are you trying to point out here, do you have any examples? Because what you described is basically Rumiko's humor in a nutshell, rather repetitive in nature after a while, too.

Is hard to define... for instance they replace gogo bar with bikini bar. Also the way Lum is seen as clingy in the classroom or the face on Shinobu when it throws the desk. Also for most of the jokes in the original version there is some buildup, the reactions of the characters are justified at least partially. Here is not very clear. For instance Lum appears as a mad woman instead of just very clingy to a man that gives her mixed signal. Also ataru seems tobe a total sleezbal instead of a man that despite having serious feelings for Shinobu and later for lum has a wandering eye and likes to flirt with other girls. As I said is hard to explain. In the original version the jokes have a subtlety here they are as blunt as they come. Hope it makes sense... I know I did not explain it well

I think I get what you are trying to say, but personally, I respectfully disagree.
I don't see much of a difference in execution. I see at best a difference in pacing with the slapstick humor, since in here is faster paced and has a whole lot more motion, similar to the Urusei Yatsura OVAs. That's the one significant difference between the old series and this one (at least until aforementioned OVAs). The animation was very limited and still for the most part, while in here, it's much more lively overall.

If you had a problem with that, I guess that's rather opinionative in terms of presentation on itself in this case, and I would understand just fine (though still wouldn't be much different from the later installments of the old series).

They literally did exactly that, they skipped a gag, and still went for a main punchline of that particular scene with the TV for missing people. For instance, they didn't even build up a punchline for what you said they brought up. They literally only put someone saying "Mommy come back home" in a segment for missing people, and then used the actual punchline of his family and Lum searching for him.

You are nitpicking, they just skipped a single gag, not ruined an entire segment because of it. The scene that mattered the most is still there, just missing an extra gag. If it was the way you are claiming to be, they would have at least shown the people on TV at that moment.

Damn, you really got me by further proving that old school humor revolves around violence. I can at least give Looney Tunes somewhat of a pass because they're anthropomorphic animals. We've got fellow humans (well, also aliens that present just like humans) in this anime. This is just domestic violence.

I never watched the original and always thought I really should have. I have a short manga chapter of it, but I've never actually opened it to read it. Well, not yet at least. Honestly, this type of humor annoys me so far. I'm not a humongous fan of humor that runs off of misunderstandings. Like aggh.;; I understand that Ataru kinda deserves the crap he gets, but at the same time it's just hard to watch someone constantly get misunderstood. Like he's not really doing anything a lot of the time and he still gets crap or misunderstood. It's just rough. I feel sad for him more than anything, but it's like the whole anime is based off of those situations. It's usually fine for me if people show that they made the wrong assumptions, but they usually don't here so it's just hard to watch.

Why are the Looney Tunes so damn violent? There'd be little to no issues if everyone was just normal and civil and used their words to solve their problems. 30's humor, I guess.

Damn, you really got me by further proving that old school humor revolves around violence. I can at least give Looney Tunes somewhat of a pass because they're anthropomorphic animals. We've got fellow humans (well, also aliens that present just like humans) in this anime. This is just domestic violence.

I'd say violence is just one part of UY's humour. There's also a lot of absurdity and ridiculousness. For example, it's totally absurd that a cute girl like Shinobu can be so strong (throwing electric poles f.e.), or that the missing person TV show has a foto of Ataru in disguise, or that rich guy Mendo comes to school by private helicopter in XXX size, and so on. That is one of the things I really enjoyed in the og show, the sheer absurdity of the situation and jokes, and that's why characters like Ataru often react to stupid things by falling to the floor with just one leg visible in the frame, at least in the original (a trope which started with 70's gag manga Gaki Deka and has been largely abandoned here).
But yeah, I see where you're coming from. If you dislike comedy with violence, then this won't be a show for you. I personally dislike bokusatsu tenshi Dokuro-chan for being way too extreme in its gags without the more clever moments of UY.
