All in all a pretty decent adaption, they really went all in with the badassery and also didn't shy away from the fan service "most of the time".

But I really have to ask myself why does netflix shy away from drawing the nipples the anime already has a high enough ratings and the female characters are shown naked like here.

https://files.catbox.moe/5euhqf.png

But jus without the nipples, that's something I really can't understand as netflix already had animated shows like draong's dogma show the nipples and various other live actions shows.

Welp hopefully the second part, is going to be as good and hopefully they adapt all the scenes faithfully without any censorship in the coming part.

I wanted this to be the anime to fill the void I have with the lack of Berserk and Dark Fantasy anime in general but it didn't.
I love the setting and artstyle but man... the plot and characters are so cliché and boring it hurts.

Great adaptation, I came in expecting nothing, and it's nearly everything in place in gorgeous display.

I'm guessing some of the nudity will be put for BD sales, as it usually happens with shows like this in many circumstances.

We are not in the best part of the story just yet, but for now, I'll go with an 8/10 (I honestly really want to give it a 9/10, but that would be a bit too biased from me haha). Over-the-top sword and sorcery badassery much like I remember, bunch of hot people fighting each other, there are only wins with Power Dark Fantasies such as this one.

It actually pioneered a lot of those cliches, back then they were not a thing. Dark Schneider for one is the OG badass hot bastard, with 4th wall breaking tendencies to boot. Gintoki from Gintama shares a few similarities to him (even in attitude), thinking about your profile pic.

Compare it to JoJo in relation to what we come to know as battle shounen nowadays. This one shares a lot with JoJo in fact (it started the trend JoJo would follow with the music references as attacks and thematic enemies; though early on there were some allusions already, the way it went from part 3 onwards is much more reminiscent of Bastard!! instead, so it was likely mutual influences), it takes itself half seriously and go all in mostly for the cool fun. Which of course, leads me to state that it doesn't really mean JoJo is now bad either, if you consider the history first. I've heard the very same complain towards it back in the first season, so I might as well address in here as well.

Oh right, the humor in Berserk borrows a lot from this too, through Puck in particular. But if you are taking this as seriously as Berserk, you are just going in with the wrong expectations for this. Go in expecting something more in the lines of the aforementioned JoJo, but hornier.

The only thing left out are the nipples, they kept all the nudity in whetever spicey scenes or naked females, none of that was censored the only thing that was left out were as said before the nipples.

And the nipples were also not present in the original manga edition they were only included in the revised edition which is really scarcely available, and which the author ultimately abandoned since he only did 9 revised volumes while there are a total of 27 manga volumes.

I know, I know. Big fan of the manga here and I have the remade volumes too. There are nipples in there yeah, it's sure spicier than the Shounen version all in all.

My point was more about the practice of making the nudity more explicit (with nipples and further erotic detailing) for the BD, even when the original didn't really have them.

For a recent example, the Redo of Healer manga (and likewise the source material) also shows no nipples or explicit sexual content (as in not barbie models humping), and it kinda looks like 4kids censoring porn... Comes the anime uncensored version -used in the BD release- and it has it all.

Finally a show which has not only an awesome story, classic anime style which almost seems lost art in this modern time, and clearly no sense of this ridiculous cancel culture. I can't believe netflix would be the ones returning us to true anime, but here it is. What a wild ride this show was. Took me back to my teens when I first watched the Heavy Metal cartoon late at night when I was sure my parents were a sleep. A true homage to when things were just simple entertainment!

Noooooo! cliffhanger end :( well can't wait for the second part. And just after that i might check the manga.

Well it was everything of what i expected to be and more. Also Gara definitely the best boy here.

Aside from some weird censorship decisions and static animation in some scenes it was a really solid series.

And my song obsession this week is the ED theme, is beautiful.

Solid 8/10 imo, hope they reach full adaptation.

Well... this ended in a suspenseful manner. I'm wondering if Dark Schneider died or What, because he hasn't even take on Abigail and Kall-su? Did he even save Arshes or What? Those questions weren't answered by this rush-hour fest of an episode. How disappointing.

To be fair, I enjoyed it somewhere somehow. Dark Schneider's development was not bad, except when the series feels the need to fanservice, they'll throw him into these sexy scenes to get on some horndogs watching. While they simply forget the dude is in love with Yoko. His character is sometimes contradicted, it doesn't have a single goal in mind. His obedience to Yoko and power level are the perfect examples of his shaky character. His overall statue as the main character is shaky and full of plot holes.

What I didn't like also about the series, is its obsession with virgins. God, I get it's supposed to be ecchi oriented series, but it went too far and went too stale. The sexual harassment is also one, this is a shounen series, aren't these things suppose to teach young boys. No wonder boys feel entitled to girls bodies, it is things like these. Yuck and fuck it. I'm not going to apologise for this type of content, even if I sound like a stooge.

The last has to be Luciene. Why did they seal an evil monster on a boy in the first place? TF! Even to unseal it was ridiculous. Yoko was the only one concerned about him, and the only character worth mentioning. I feel like Dark Schneider took advantage of the kid, with a future while he's lived so many years. Give a kid his body back asshole, is what I kept thinking throughout the entire series.

All is for 500yen. It is good money in dark fantasy times Kappa

I got what i excepted from this anime. This anime is so cringe, half serious and funny at the same time. I laughed more than i excepted. And this version of the manga is much better than 6 episode ova imo. This is all can be done by studio LIDENFILMS. They did a really good job in this anime. The animations were looking so good that i couldnt leave my eyes from them. Facial expression could be a little bit better but for this quality of anime i guess it was ok. OSTs were good as well. It is made by the one who made naruto's osts. Seiyuu performances were on the top. OP and ED were so good. Story has so many flaws but the anime is not build on the serious aspect of the story. Therefore it is not a problem for me. Thank you all for this reboot <3

Coming into this I expected the pacing to be really fast. But fortunately it was actually really well paced. 13 eps and we're barely at Anslasax. The problem is that the manga was really just this generic in the beginning so there's not much you can do about that. This is a pretty old (1988) story afterall so expect it to be full of cliches.

Enjoyed this little pervert show that just screams the 80s/90s. I sorely miss how anime was made in those era. Bummed out with the cliffhanger ending (how sure we are that season 2 is already given greenlit anyway), went to read the manga and got even more bummed out to find out it's in hiatus. Are we even going to ever see the end of this story...

To say it shortly - boooring.
Like the "battle" against Di-Amon was quite finny and epic in a way, also there was an animation bump for episode 13...but those good parts can't save the whole thing.

This was actually amazing, perfect mix of comedy, drama and fanservice. So many anime just fail to do serious parts because everything needs to be comedy, but this really nailed it.

Despite beeing a 35 years old story it felt surprisingly fresh. The raw energy of this just screams 80/90s anime, and the studio delivered great animation on top.

Really enjoyable, cant wait for part 2.

Hm, this was a very standard show but good.

It´s standard yet enjoyable enough making it curiously refreshing; without having to think much; just have fun.

I specially enjoyed how it did not take fully seriously nor went to depressive hard feeling gore.

How I wish I could give 7.5 / 10

But, I am going for 8/10; 7/10 is also a plausible score.

---

A bit of complain is just that in my opinion they kinda of dragged out too much the battle between Nei and Schneider; Like.. it was 1 episode and half? So I was starting to get bored a bit. But that is just a minor detail.

They should just let sleeping dogs lie, these adaptations of old sources, a lot of them are so garbage. Far too many products of their era and this is no different. The only positive I saw was the ridiculousness of it all and the way it lead to some stupid and humorous moments, but everything else was terrible. Especially in the second half with that ninja dude offering play by play commentary for everything lol. And the ecchi was garbage as well, so many anime do battle ecchi better. 5/10, not sure if I even want to watch the sequel.

Says the massive Cross Ange Fanboy while dropping a lot of good stuff, FYI Cross Ange was far from perfect too.

Also "old cliche and tropes" you do know that this is following a Manga that came out in that 80s right?

Also "bombed" got any proof for that, like ratings or views and no, MAL doesn't contribute that, even though every thing episode poll has been mostly all posstive with loved it.
holy cope.
old OVA literally got cancelled and remain unfinished because nobody liked it.
you think dark fantasy + ecchi is automatically good because it's le mature anime for mature audience such as myself huh? lol

Bastard's story is unashamely a doujinshi of whatever heavy metal band the author was into, but with its drawing, which is Godlike at that time of release, make it one of the most influential manga of all time. And that is why it's hard to do an anime adaptation for a manga that is known for its amazing drawing, until now.

Netflix not only provide a reasonable animation, at its worst it's still watchable, but the overall experience is it's beautiful animated that it make Yasuharu Takanashi's soundtrack pale in comparison. I guess it take a lot of money, and I don't think they'll make a profit on this. But I'm even more shocked at the fact that this first part is supposed to end at episode 7 (you can clearly see a sign, like no ED sequence, and the logo Bastard appear at the beginning of episode 8) but Netflix release it all the way to episode 13 with more to follow in September. And this is such a faithful adaptation, they don't tone down any plot with a questionable moral.

Watching it in one go is a good experience, but I believe this won't benefit Netflix in a long run. I suggest Netflix to release the anime weekly to keep the hype in a longer time and selling anime merchandise and concert event, etc. , it begins this weekly model with "Isekai Ojisan" but I hope it applies to every Netflix anime from now on.

Loved it.

The last few episodes (beginning with the one before Count Di-amon I think) were fucking great. My main gripe is that I wish it looked better. There were some nice visuals during the Dark Schnieder vs Nei fight, but the animation was lackluster for the most part. Despite my issues with the visuals I still had a blast watching this. The characters are fun and silly. It's nice to watch something that doesn't take itself too seriously. I enjoyed all the metal references. And, kudos to the cast for their voice acting. They were so freaking good.

Ah, kinda disappointed at the cliffhanger ending. The OVA covered more with 6 episodes than this 13-episode series. Albeit the OVA cut A LOT of content within those 6 episodes, so yeah. Part 2 is confirmed to come in September already so don't have to wait too long, thankfully.

Loved the mix of old-school and modern artstyle. The OST was great too. Especially the OP and the ED. They're badass and sexy respectively.

My main complaint with this anime is that Netflix licensed it. Their dub sucks. Not only was the performance mediocre but the script sucked too. They took more liberties than they should've and as a result made Yoko a more bitchy personality than she already is. The performance of Kai Harn and Arshes Nei voice actors was also lackluster. It blows my mind that the OVA dub from the 90s is better with a more faithful script and better performance. Netflix took an L there. The big problem is that there are no subs that are more faithful to the Japanese dialogue. You're stuck with the horrible dub subs. I hope a fansubbing community picks this anime up to give it a more faithful translation.

Another big fuck-up is Netflix releasing all 13 episodes on the same day. It's horrible for anime which depends highly on weekly discussions that drive up interest and popularity. I don't think I've seen a single post regarding this anime since the first week it came out. If this was a weekly airing anime, it'd surely be more popular. Devilman crybaby was a fluke. I wish Japanese producers would see that before partnering with Netflix again like JoJo Part 6. The only advantage JoJo had was that it was already a popular anime so it probably didn't lose as much momentum. RIP Part 6 memes though.
