I just noticed how this anime is not popular on MAL. Miserable 13k users, less than Tesla Ex-Arm!

Only 1k rated it. But it is not just this season. The 1st one just has 45k users rating. Any popular series of this season starts with this number of votes, then surpasses hundreds of thousands later.

Why is Yuuki Yuuna not popular? It was even streaming in Amazon or Netflix. I thought YuYuYu was at least a reference among Magic Girl series.

The twist in the first season comes pretty late so it may not have gotten noticed. It was easy to confuse it for a school/slice of life anime so people passed over it. Also, it was an anime original, so there was no source based circlejerk to hype it up before it aired.

And even to those that would be aware, they'd probably write it off as copying Madoka or something. A lot of people believe this whole magical girl genre was mostly boring cutesy stuff until Madoka made it interesting and that kind of revisionism goes around a lot.

Although on that topic, Nanoha has even less users (~37k vs the 47k for YuYuYu s1) and I always thought that was a big one but suppose it's pretty old.

It is among the more popular magical girls to debut in recent times. But it's a "Madoka clone," and those are never popular in the grand scheme of things. Many erroneously believe that Magical Girl Site is representative of the genre, as Site has the next most views after Madoka.

Technically, it is a school/slice of life anime. But I had no idea before watching that it's also a magical girl, thanks to misleading advertising.

Also, it was an anime original, so there was no source based circlejerk to hype it up before it aired.

The source hype was supposed to come from the Washio Sumi novel, which was never published in English. Personally, I watched this anime because a famous writer worked on it. I understand that Akame ga Kill does not have the best of reputations, however.

Well, Symphogear seems popular, though not sure how much of it is considered magical girl.

Site.... that was quite a meme anime lol. I dunno how that got so many views. It wasn't the worst thing ever but still.,

Yuribait? Maybe. Mediocre? Never.
The story has so many religious/political layers. Countless interpretations. It does get repetitive at times but it's not mediocre at all imo.

I like this aspect of Yuki Yuna. Do you know of anything similar you would recommend? Please no Madoka Magica.

So for newcomers who never heard of YuYuYu before, it could be rather confusing to have a prequel and a sequel to the original anime airing at the same time.

They didn’t air at the same time. The Hero Chapter aired after Washio Sumi.

The Yuusha Arc was just bad, specially for Madoka 2.0. It took everything that happened previously and just said "nope". So I can expect many (like myself) either don't know why they're making yet another sequel or why to care about it.

YuYuYu reminds me of WIXOSS. While not even close to being masterpieces, both of these were nice additions to the whole "cute girls must suffer" thing we have going in anime, but were ruined by unnecessary sequels.

I felt the same way about the Hero Chapter. I only watched it for the characters.
As for WIXOSS, it was Selector Spread that ruined the franchise for me. I thought Selector Infected was quite good, but the cliffhanger meant I couldn’t watch it without Spread.

It sounds like you're surprised the majority of MAL has no taste.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

because MAL has no taste and prefers stuff like madoka and symphogear which are inferior to YUYUYU greatness

damn shame feel like theres a lot of layers that factor into why and the viewing order being not easy to understand is one of them, hell this season it took me a while to figure out what plots they were covering

It’s a new season of a somewhat niche magical girl series from 2014. What were you expecting?

I don't know about now, but YuYuYu is pretty popular in Japan back when it first aired in 2014.

Also, MAL statistic can be pretty misleading as most of anime don't need to be popular outside Japan to success, the most important market is in Japan (that is where most of the merchandise buyers come from duh).

As for the show itself, the ending for 1st and 2nd season is a hit and miss for a lot of people but plot and story itself is fine (except episode 5-8 in this season, that rushed shit deserve to burn in hell until a proper remake are made). But the biggest problem is how niche magical girls genre is, even after Madoka Magica this genre only gain a big but short lived popularity boost (yes the boost is very big, but very short lived and not shared with other magical girl series in the long run).

It's like a fourth season of mediocre Madoka Magica ripoff.

Sequels usually have less popularity, because watching previous entries is required

yes and that's right, here they only watch popular anime by sending scores that they don't think about first. Even though from the content of YuYuYu's story, I think it's good.

It is popular in Japan, so in the end, it doesn't matter what happens here.
Maybe because maho shoujo isn't like a big genre itself and as most madoka fans, that are the mayority of the people who watch mahou shoujo didn't wanted to watch this because it looks like a copy (I also thought that before I started watching yuyuyu). Made the first season don't have a big "reception" (it is 100k, but... most of the anime of that season have bigger numbers, even twintail have more people).
Then, the second season made some people pissed about the story, so they dropped the series.
So... its not surprising that it doesn't have high numbers. At least there are some people that have my tastes.

I'm so sorry you are a person who wasn't able to understand the meaning of the word fact due to whatever circumstances you are in. Had I known I wouldn't have made such an aggressive comment. I apologize.

this is a very niche show to begin with, not to mention a third season which means most watchers this season doesn't even bat an eye because it's too deep for a time investment

S2 is also kinda bad, not that bad but you get what i mean, most of the watchers are pretty much the very devoted ones

Well, that makes it a "hidden gem'! We persons of impeccable taste know how good it is. We can spread the YuYuYu to worthy friends 😊
It isn't easy to follow, they suffer so much! Luckily the final episode is called "Eternal Joy" so...
Still room for season 4, but it would likely be very different so, unlikely.

I agree.
I tried my best to get invested in the show but ended up really annoyed with the last episode ass pull to make everyone happy because of the power of friendship and yuri beats everything BS.
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.

i hate Madoka more than MAL hates SAO, the show itself is good but the legacy it left behind will forever marr magical girl shows. It's not the first dark magical girl neither it will be the last
