THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Hmm, training for tactical combat. It looks like Takeru made a hell of an impression.

Pretty much just an info dump episode with strategic discussions and tactic strategies. Takeru is definitely intelligent when it comes to his role for what's worth.

Infodump, but well done, they only covered four days of action in this episode!

It's concerning that in three episodes we're on 27 Nov though...

Human animation crap as usual, 3D animation brilliant as usual.

(I'm starting to think out loud how the pacing can work out, and depending on the speed of the coup d'etat we may or may not see Sado... but I don't think they'll be able to go beyond Sado, or even complete it.)

My mind's pretty much given up on taking the show seriously and talking in detail about it and while the pacing and rush of content is still terrible, the fact that I gave up mentally on this series somehow made this an easier watch. Loads of infodumping and references to stuff from previous Muv-Luv entries like how he played games with his friends from before and basically is using that experience to translate that to how he operates the TSF. Visuals and direction continue to offer nothing really, CG mechas and their movement's fine, rest aren't that good. The punch Takeru took too had no weight to it whatsoever, felt like a graze more than a punch worthy of blood being spewed because the animation and visuals in general were as underwhelming as ever.

Every anime has this under their sleeve: some fanservice to at least add SOME value to the show overall. In the case for Muv-Luv, it only detracts from the experience.

Takeru and the other girls are still on the CCSE test, and especially now the TSF mastery to overcome and exterminate the BETA in the Type-94 Fubukis. Personal mechs like the Takemikazuchi under the Shogun's command take different courses of actions, and the criticism taken of Takeru from Lieutenant Mana Tsukuyomi show the in-depthness of Takeru's origins that surprisingly, isn't so hard to understand.

Takeru using video game simulation logic to train flexible pilots piloting the inflexible TSFs, and it seems like a good idea with Yuuko as well to put Takeru on the spot as a test pilot (because he is the only one that could). Add the fact that Kasumi knows of future tech, and that Takeru's time-travelling knolwedge to save what could be done, it's all infodump, but really understandable and conceivable.

OK, not a bad episode at all. Except the visuals and animation which is non-salvageable at this point.

They're speed running through events as expected. At least they didn't rush immediately to the 12/5 incident.

Much better than last week, both the pacing and the animation. A bit of the animation was still iffy and it definitely is nothing out of the ordinary, but it was not immersion breaking like some of the shots last week. If it stays on this level I am okay with it.
The main issue I have at this point is that there is a ton of plot but they do not allocate a lot of scenes for character development. I'd like to see Takeru interact more with his squadmates.

Much better than last week's episode, which isn't hard in the slightest, but this adaptation still proves to be absolutely dreadful in every sense of the word.

I've come to the conclusion that this isn't a good adaptation (obviously) but a good anime.

As much as I love Muv Luv and would've loved to see a proper adaptation, this is still very enjoyable and I've seen a lot of anime-onlys being able to keep up and enjoy this.

This episode was a huge improvement compared to the previous one. Still, the damage was done, it feels like just a summary of Muv Luv.

How are anime-only feeling about the characters? On the main girls? If I try to see it from their perspective they feel really bland and with no personality. Still would like to hear opinion on this from someone else.

And Sumika, they show us some glimpses of her, but it's not the same as knowing her from Extra.

So yeah, improvement in regards of story, but the characters aren't fleshed out much. Still wouldn't recommend the anime for first experience.

I'm starting to feel the same way too. There's too little to be happy about with this show.

Haha, this anime made me buy and purchase the VN.
I'm still at Extra, but it is funny and charming.
Without the Highschool romcom part, a big part is missing honestly, no wonder some viewers don't feel this show. it's more enjoyable if you know where the characters are coming from. for Muv Luv newcomers it's hardly recommendedable without any knowledge of the events in Extra.

This season pretty much a buildup season for the next season, so I'm seeing their training building up slowly, Ep 2-3 were non-mech trainings alongside Yuuko and Takeru explanation, Ep 4 and so on are the REAL mecha training still alongside Yuuko and Takeru explanation.

Yep. To be honest the VN version of Alternative itself spends its first half as buildup which sets up a lot of mysteries not mentioned in Unlimited (and of course not in Extra).

I tried to tell people that they don't *strictly* need to go through Extra and Unlimited before reading Alternative, especially for those who have not read any VN before to begin with, as they definitely would not have the patience to sit through those 50 hours as their first VN experience. But still, with how little time people have these days, rarely anybody manages to get going reading even just Alternative.

There's still hope that if the second cour of this anime does all the climactic parts decently, people can still watch the two cours in a row and not judge the quality too harshly, and I can at least recommend something for the casuals to get into Alternative.

I gotta say, Muv-Luv was never a charage, rather, it uniquely focuses on the protagonist's inner journey, getting the reader to empathize extremely strongly with him. Despite Alternative being my favorite VN of all time (I dubbed it the only life-changing work of art I've ever come across), I only listed Takeru as my favorite character, but nobody else. I don't know how the other readers felt, but my impression was that the other girls in the squad besides Sumika and Meiya were rarely very important in the whole plot of Alternative, which has a dizzying cast of characters throughout its course anyways.

But yeah, all Sumika-related scenes are so much more powerful due to the time we spent with her in Extra, this I agree.

News mechs look nice & training move quite well.
Some weird politics between Royal guard & UN.
Interesting there no double Kakeru from time travel since the original died, but mystery why only a few know.
MC & Yuuko talk about cancels & combo for practical use fun. Games simplify to presets, but irl each limb needs aiming, timing, adjust for gravity & balance, how enemies change etc.

Takeru is definitely the best character in Muv Luv. But playing through Extra and Unlimited made me get to know the other girls and I actually got attached to them. Meiya and Sumika are definitely the most important, but the others also had their roles. And thanks to spending time to get to know their personalities, the most emotional parts (don't wanna spoil here) hit quite deep. Personally, I got attached to almost every character.

But in the anime, the main girls don't even feel important. Just background characters. Yea, in Alternative they didn't have a very big role, but in Unlimited they were definitely the main characters, that's why Alternative didn't need to focus on them. But here, even Meiya feels like no one, and she still plays a big role in Alternative. Not to say Marimo. In Extra she was a nice and compassionate person, then when we went into Unlimited/Alternative we got to know a stricter side of her, but with her students on her mind. That change was great IMO and definitely fleshed her out.

The anime so far focuses mainly on Takeru and Yuuko (what means they are focusing primarily on the story). Other characters really barely feel like characters.

Either way, this adaptation is doomed, characters are only a part of the problem. I just can't imagine how can anyone care about the upcoming parts with no-one characters.

Yeah, I'd still say that Alternative manages to become gripping relatively fast. You can even fast-skip some early parts like the island training which was not much different from the version in Unlimited if you want to. You've finally trawled through dozens of hours of the worst part of the VN just to stop right before it gets to the actual point in Alternative, and instead are getting this super-abridged adaptation lol, which of course cannot reproduce the super detailed conversations and descriptions of inner thoughts that make Alternative truly different. But anyways, if this is what you've decided to do, hope they don't completely fuck it up with the 2 cours so that at least you'll want to check out the original once the anime is over. Though honestly I can't even imagine what it would feel like to e.g. read Steins;Gate only after watching the anime, which feels a massive downgrade compared with the original in every aspect yet still got such a high score for some reason.

I think this is one of the places where the adaptation shows its seams when it comes to not adapting Extra or Unlimited.

For all the flaws of Extra, you get a preview of personality with the different heroines. Their situation may change, but their personality doesn't. This helps with the deja vu.

There's also the issue with the "childhood friend who must not be named" - Since Extra isn't adapted, anime-only viewers won't know enough to be able to give a damn.
