The music and decent visuals carried it for the most part, would've worked better as a movie focusing on the key theme cutting all the unnecessary fluff.

Pretty disheartening last episode. The only explanation for such a blank ending must be the shortage of episodes. Why add so much stuff when in the end you don’t even care about explaining half of them. I could watch the last episode alone, and would feel like I haven’t missed a lot.

Could have done without the acoustic version of the theme song. Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged in New York" unfortunately broke a generation's brains on that sort of thing.

But apart from that, top stuff.

A very satisfying watch. An anime original series where you really have to use your brain and pay attention to every little things is become rarer and rarer.

It was a pretty anticlimatic ending to be honest, the scene from the last episode was much more intense, it's more of an epilogue. Lots of question unanswered, I liked that it was pretty subtle with most of the explanations but now it kinda feels like they didn't have any answers to give us at all. I like the show's final message but I fail to see how it's linked to most of the other (alleged) plot points. Maybe a rewatch will help me see clearer.

It was still a great experience overall though, and some episodes were simply masterful.

Easily one of the best shows I have seen in the year so far. The ending was definitely bittersweet, but life is also like that.

It kinda upset me Mizuho pretended to not know Nagara when he first called out to her, but I'm glad she ended up approaching him later. Maybe she got angry because he didn't use their code lol Or just needed some time to herself.

SoraSenpai said:
Wait hold up...I think my mind has been blown...were they middle school students all along? Because they were supposed to graduate in the Drift world, but it's been two years in the Real world and they are now in High School...am I just understanding this now???

Either way I thought Mizuho was going to forget Nagara...she did but it took the realization of the glass breaking to remember.

They were on their last year of middle school, and about to start high school so I guess the confusion is understandable.

Mizuho had her memories all along, she just decided to not talk to him for some reason we aren't allowed to know lol. That's why she goes to check the school, and every single place that used to have portals Nagara found. It was her checking If things really did go back to normal. The glass breaking was her testing If it would get fixed, since everything that was inside the school in the adrift world would get fixed shortly after it was broken (mind you, this was pointed out after they go from the black void world, to Hateno Island, so maybe that rule didn't exist in the black void world).

Shit that makes sense. In part to Mizuho.

Yeah they never really specified that they were in Middle School unless I missed it. Crazy

Great anime 10/10 this ending is fucking lit. I think i kinda get what happened. Nagara caused the drifting, because he didn't like real world where things died like that bird. He couldn't accept that world, hence he created new world. It's somehow connected to escapism and adolescence. I think this anime is about growing up and accepting the world as it is.

The best anime of the recent years. It's painstakingly beautiful in its roughness from start to finish, and the core message is at the same time simple and completed. Just like the show itself. Absolutely marvelous.

Nagara and Mizuho ended in a New World and not the Original World

the Nozomi of the Original World is dead there so this New Nozomi is a different person

or rather this is a New Timeline that branch or split from the Original Timeline since old episodes already mentioned Quantum Physics with Many Worlds Interpretation

They did it, they tied it correctly. Didnt stop having this chill feeling all episode, every single scene one by one was perfect to contrast the other worldy feeling that was exposed and expressed a ton of information without being grating. The amount of sentiment in every single insert song, the dreamy like landscape into the reality, the expression of the sentiments and the final morale of the story through the usage of the common factor bird was done right, this was just the beginning, life doesnt end until the end
I dont really care about the logic of this one, the experience of this episode was amazing and tied perfectly the main characters. For the start caring about anything that would be limiting in this anime was strange, as Nagara said, everything can be possible

I will be conflicted about this anime forever though, the first episode and the last were amazing, but fuck did it have boring ones in between lmao

Wow, what a show. While not having the biggest hype behind it and its subject matter being quite confusing on every episode-scratch that, every scene, it really piqued my interest as it carried on. It seems to have both liminal and subliminal messages all around aimed at social, political and philosophical issues that upon further analysis may be interpreted in different ways. If that's the case, it can make for a discussion-rich kind of play which makes me appreciate it more. Indeed, I have been discussing these over the course of its airing with other fellow watchers.

Animation wise it's difficult for me to compare it to anything else I've watched so far. It's simple yet detailed and distinct with lots of contrasting colors. As such it can produce a lot of creative and surrealist scenes which really fit with the world-drifting idea the plot seems to be based around. It can come off as charming or unsettling but in a good way, which is the case for this last episode when Nagara and Mizuho try to escape to their destination and they meet Asakaze.

Speaking of the characters, not a bad cast overall. Nagara developing bit by bit after each of his encounters and thanks to the aid of Nozomi who ends up having a more relevant role than what initially appears to be. Mizuho's snobby attitude in contrast to Rajdhani who's level headedness helped me orientate around what was happening, even if I didn’t understand him completely. Lastly, Asakaze's eagerness to demonstrate his usefulness, his relationship with the previous characters and his attitude made him become sort of an antagonist as some of the rest from the supporting cast. The only one I didn't particularly care about was Miss Aki since I couldn't really get what her motive and goal was considering her actions. Hell, was she even the same one from the original world.

On a more positive note, I have to also give my props to the soundtrack. Being out for a couple of weeks I've already listened to it fully and I quite enjoyed it. It's calm at times, upbeat at others, with each track following its own subtle style. Some are even sung, which include my favorite, the ending one. Even though its sequence doesn't have animation (nor an opening for that matter) it conveys a lot and it's among the most heartfelt I've heard in a while. In fact, I found myself listening to that particular one a lot, even air drumming quite energetically after the chorus. I wonder if that's because it reminds me of how Attaque 77 was back in their more punk rock phase.

In short, there are a lot of elements that make this show stand out from the rest of the season. I'll most probably watch it again in the future and even rate it higher depending on my experience. For now, it's an easy recommendation on my behalf. Maybe not binge it or watch it while high or drunk though.

holy shit. definitely the most fitting ending to this series.

i have a feeling this ending answer many question, yet i didn't seems to find it on my first watch. maybe i'll watch this episode multiple times sometimes later.

but anyway, this ending is definitely 10/10. while the series can be better imo, this ending definitely amazing from start to finish. from the usage of musage from mitsume, and toe, and ended with impactful acoustic ver. of shounen shoujo by gingnang boyz. this episode is amazing.

here what i able to grasp from this episode. the episode start after nagara successfully able to go home to their real world. but is this world, their original world ? short answer, NO. this world is a new world created by nagara and mizuho using nagara power and nozomi compas. that's why in this world nozomi is alive where she should've been dead in the original world.
anyway, after coming back, nagara seems able to live his life just like he used to before he's been drifting. which is kinda of sad to be honest. he tried to talk with mizuho, but somehow mizuho tried to avoiding nagara. but then later, after confirming the things have gotten to normal after checking the school, mizuho then later try to talk with nagara. they both talk in the park questioning wether nagara choice to cameback is the right choice or not, which then nagara insist that he's choosing the right choice. but this isn't really well reflected to what happened to both nagara and mizuho. both of them seems like back to the life of depression and boredom like they used to have before they go back to the drifting world. so, did nagara really choose the right answer ?
after talking, they then go back to their own each other place. but before going back, mizuho try to cheer nagara telling him that "he'll be fine". that word seems like able to cheer nagara. after that scene, we then see mizuho hanging out with her friends. this mizuho is definitely not the original mizuho, but somehow it's shown that she's looking at the sky indicating maybe she's stille see the white light in the sky, just like she used to see on the island. then we see nagara arriving to the station from train. he then tried to help the bird that he hear from the other day, but when he check it, the bird is actually already gone. it turns out that nozomi already help her. nagara and nozomi then proceed to have a chat a little. nozomi offer nagara to adopt the bird, unfortunately nagara can't keep pet on his apartment. nozomi then notice that nagara from the same school as him. but before anything goes further, asakaze then appeared and call nozomi. seems like nozomi and asakaze in this world is really close. possible both of them have already in realitionship. nagara then stare nozomi while she's talking with asakaze, after looking at her for awhile, finally he's understand. she's maybe not the nozomi that he know, but she is definitely the real nozomi. after that nagara then walk away then the credit role.

the message that this episode try to convey is that, sometimes when making choice, things may not go as smooth as we want (reflect by after nagara and nozomi making choice to comeback, they just go back to their depressing world). but that's what reality is. we just have to move on, and endure our life. definitely a bitter message, but somehow i really like it.

there's a little bit theory that i have regarding mizuho.
regarding mizuho, i think she has some secret that we don't know yet. while she's at school i don't really know the reason why she check the school drifting part like the curtain, and the toilet. the film frame her at that part as a very mysterious and kind of malicious person. i like to think that she's maybe the reason of why the drifting happened. tho i don't have a good solid evidence to back it up. it's just an absurd theory that i have tho.

and one last thing there's a mysterious character in this episode that i think only appear in this episode, yet somehow i think have a big participation to the mystery of the series. that character is women with yellow ponytail. she first appear on the scene where nagara is doing his job. i thought she's just a nobody. but then she appear in a very brief moment in the scene where nagara tried to leapt through dimension after talking with the old geezer god. she may have a very big role. yet i seems can't remember wether she's already appeared before this episode or not.

overally i absolutely love this ending. a 9/10 ending for me. but this series is definitely 1n 8/10 even though this is one of my most favorite anime i've ever watched this year.

this is the scene where nagara is doing his job. after kicking the trash, she then appeared.

this scene happened where nagara and mizuho try to leave the dimension. this scene happened after we see old geezer god on his wheelchair (indicating the possibility that both of them somehow have a connection)

I fucking love this show. I get the sense there was 24 episodes worth of story written, if at least implied. I think it was clear that the drifting version of the world was hollow from the start, as Asakaze was trying to cope with and Nozomi already knew. Hence why Nozomi was the escape.

I just wish Nagara saved the bird at the end. But I understand he couldn't change the world after all :')

Good overall, but didn't receive the ending it deserved. So many questions are left unanswered, and I really wish we would have had more information, lore, plot or explanations

The characters were great, story extremely interesting & captivating. However, at the end all these elements or most of them (Babel tower especially, with its lore) were just introduced or barely shown, without receiving a bigger treatment.

This show fails to abide to Chekov's Gun on so many levels. Like Nozomi's alleged death in their own world, Aki sensei's antagonism or the guy in the wheelchair, even Asazake's expected confrontation was a complete bummer, other characters were nothing but red herring, like Ponytail girl or Hoshi. All that pretentious BS about capitalism or a world where Kenjiro Tsudogo could have allegedly saved by War's infection served up no real purpouse, just stupid and pointless stories to make this show look "deepu" (I think even the nonsensical stories of Granpa Simpsons had more meaning than any of these).

For me this show reached it's peak in episode 6 with the graduation ceremony episode, if it had stopped there it would had had a more favorable score from my behalf (not to mention it would have only wasted only 6 episodes of watch time). I'll still give it a favorable 4.5 just because the first part of the series had a lot of potential and because it didn't bore me like the second part did.

You summed up it well.

While Nagara and Mizuho waited for their unexplained vehicle to reach the edge of the worlds, time passed for Asakaze, likely thousands of years. Unlike them he's able to reach that place without waiting via his OP power, so he shows up to have the last word. He chooses to help them escape in the end.

The final episode was quite decent, all things considered. It was nice that Nagara and Mizuho remembered each other when they arrived at their final destination. I was really into Sonny Boy in those first couple episodes but then a lot of things in the middle portion of the series just soured things for me so my final rating for the show is a 6/10. I think if I get some time, I want to give the show a second watch to see if my opinion on it will change.

This ending was very melancholy for me but I loved the anime from beginning to end.

First of all they didn't need to change the ending song for a cover.

Nagara knows he can't change the world and can only live with the choice he made, even if it didn't turn out the way he wanted. This part is kind of sad but as he said at the end their lives were just beginning so I really believe that he and Mizuhono will live a happy life in this dreary world and that they will keep the friendship they developed together (I need to believe that or else you know... depression...)
I'm kind of disappointed that Nagara hasn't kept the promise he made to Nozomi, even if this is a different Nozomi he could have at least talked to her a little more.

Now what lowered the anime score for me were all the things that were left open, from episodes 8 to 10 the development was left open and in the end we didn't know what the goals of the "teacher" were, or who that "War" guy was and why he wanted to kill god.

Nagara and Nozomi complemented eachother so well and I was aboard the ship! Sad that the time they spent together is only known to Nagara. Made me cry like a bitch. But I hope that after the open ending Nagara keeps his promise and befriends her again and hopefully she dumps Asakaze for him somewhere down the line (if they were even together in this reality)!

I love how the ending is divisive when this was clearly the direction from the beginning, creating a coming of age arc about Nagara and the main characters, anything else was fluff to provide a framework to teach them their lessons and to enforce certain messages tangential to the main topic lmao feel like I watched a completely different anime

Same, I thought the direction the story was gonna go was pretty clear from episode 1: A bunch of young teens suffering from massive escapism syndrome and not quite knowing how to live life properly/standing on their own two feet without relying on magic shit (quite literally the powers). Nagara is the perfect MC for this theme, and he served his role well, too (learning step by step to face life with a raised head).

This is definitely not a show for everyone tho, so I'm not surprised some folks hated it or wanted something more from it. But I do think is gonna have a ton of rewatch value.

I thought it was the perfect answer coming from her tbh lmao. If we know everyone in the "This world" eventually dies by losing their sense of self, then in a way is like Mizuho is saying "I still have things to do. I'm not ready to give up yet". I don't think she needs a big reason to want to live her life, and If anything it exemplifies her shared growth with Nagara: They are both ready to face reality, whatever it is and no matter how harsh it is.

We also gotta remember that she was also tied to everyone going adrift (Nagara, her and her cats played a bigger role in all of that, from what was explained to us). She, like Nagara, didn't want to face the reality of her situation (losing her cats, feeling guilty about being directly responsible for her favorite teacher losing his job, the funeral for her grandma).

What a joyride. The final message from Mizuho to Nagara about him being fine as long as he is a bit like how he was on island hit me pretty hard. Nagara still acts the same but I'm sure he has more confidence in himself after all the experiences he went through. That's why I can be satisfied with this ending. Mizuho and Nagara just spent 2000 years together and have the courage to move on with their lives. Moving on from friends or family is extremely hard but sometimes it is what we need to do to chase our dreams. In Sonny Boys case, they dreamt of making it back home. I feel melancholic now that Sonny Boy is finished. It was a lot of fun to watch!

Love the ending. So bittersweet, but that’s life in the real world and what Nagara signed up for when he decided to go back. What I love the most is the fact that he can hold his head up high now and look forward to what the future can hold was everything for his character.

Such a great anime. It felt like it didn’t know what it wanted to be once it started, but by episode 6 and beyond it was something I looked forward to week after week. It’s rare to see original anime this ambitious and given this kind of effort. Wonder Egg failed, but I am so happy this stuck the landing. Definitely AOTS (granted Fena doesn’t get even better than it already is).

8/10. Closer to a 9 than a 7.

There's a lot of plot holes that they did not explain that much, I could write a whole essay about all the plot holes for every episodes...

I kind of feel left out, I wish there would be some Season 2 or OVA atleast to explain everything... for example what happened to Sensei or the President and Vice President(Hoshi)? Whats the point of their character? I thought they would become antagonist or something... also War? What happened to him and to God?

The ending does'nt makes sense to me...
