THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------

The anime continues to display an impressive level of detail in its visuals. It has this characteristic style that makes it just look fresh and new all the way through. There are a few visual oddities here and there (sometimes some bland textures on surfaces for one and awkward mix of different styles for the clouds and the ground that the interface they meet at looks odd) however it doesnt take away anything from the experience. The explosions still look as stunning as ever, no matter how big or how small.

The interfaces used are also really impressive with their level of detail and clarity. I kind of get lost in just looking at them and focusing on them during the most technical jargon filled scenes. For example during the explanation of Iscander Warp Travel using that Wave Motion Engine, I liked how they displayed the interior of the system and went through the process of how they can use it for the Dimensional Wave Motion Explosive Compression Emitter to form micro black holes.

The warp travel looked really stunning at times both for the entry to get into it

As well as during and inside of it.

Exiting through was quite cool too with the seemingly shards of ice covering it just breaking off like glass and shattering. I hope we get to see this again, which I guess we may.

Lastly Kodai looked really cool as the Tactical Officer on board and manning the actual Wave Motion Cannon.

The Wave Motion Cannon was pretty impressive and hopefully they can justify its use later on. I also like how more of the crew received larger roles, for example the other person who mans the guns (impressive reflection of the display they gave his glasses, I feel its something minor that shows tend to avoid.

For the actual plot, it was interesting and unique. I hope it stays focused on the crew and their interactions among each other. Im curious why the Gamilians are resembled to humans in appearance and such, or is it just a coincidence.

I think that the physical resemblance to humans is deliberate and fits in with the ambivalent attitudes towards war (and the Pacific War in particular) current in Japanese society at the time of the original series. The genocidal actions of the Gamilians (and the response of the humans) is not being excused by dehumanizing the enemy--after all we're all sentient beings right? Dehumanizing the enemy is usually one of the first goals of domestic propaganda during wartime, because otherwise you might get more blowback when doing unpleasant things like incinerating hundreds of thousands of civilians with firebombs and atomic weapons (or in this show bombarding a planet with asteroids to sterilize it prior to Gamiliforming). Note too, the rather touching holographic recording of the Gamilian commander's young daughter asking when her father would be finished his work (exterminating humanity) so that he could come home and play with her.

I was also glad to see that they kept the clothes stripping effect of the warp drive as well as the psychedelic lighting from the original series. Of course that effect only appears to happen with the female crew members. Funny that.....

That was a part I didnt understand and am glad you brought it up, was it really like that in the original, all the effects with warpping and the time stop and other stuff through that entire ordeal (did the clothes become see through too) hope they explain this if they use it again.

Yes. The nudity was even more noticeable in the original and I believe they also showed nipples which was unheard of in North America back in the 70s. I was able to find the original online in a subbed version (much better than the English dub, Star Blazers, which also edits out some of the obvious commentary on the second world war). The vaguely psychedelic effects were also part of the original, but that was a pretty traditional way of going into hyperspace (or travelling in time) in most of the nonanimated science fiction shows of that period. If I find the time I'm going to go back and check out some more episodes of the original, just to do a comparison, but at this point it looks like they've kept the meat of the story but have updated the animation and provided some gender balance (and romance possibilities) in the crew. I have read discussions of the original series which suggest that the female main character (radar operator) also would fill in as a nurse, exo-botanist, and whatever other non-combat role she was needed in (damsel in distress?). Its a pity that there aren't more people watching it on MAL, I think it's been nicely refurbished for the new millenium.

Impressive visuals for the warp effect! I'd love to know how it feels traveling like that, everything might feel too slow compared to anything living like in a vacuum. Then that Motion Wave Gun test stunned me, I didn't see that coming testing the gun on the enemy base! And I didn't get enough of Laleta's voice! Sadly Hiro Yuuki had to voice a character who makes an appearance and dies in the same episode. However that was one fine looking cat ♥

And honestly, the more episodes I watch, the more satisfied I feel about this remake. Personally I don't regret buying the BDs, I received my copy of the 2nd volume last week. It's becoming one of the best remakes compared to the original material and as I'm watching the original again it feels like I'm back to my childhood times. I'm wondering if the fan who chose to sub this is only encoding the videos? The English subtitles are already there on the BD and they are of a greatest quality. I find the translations fairly accurate for a Japanese release with no mistakes.

I love this guy and his glasses. He just stands out! And impressive reflection as you said. They handle visuals professionally. I wonder if anyone familiar with the original has recognized this guy yet, he is Yasuo Nanbu. He got a haircut in this remake I could almost not recognize him. He still wears glasses, nice sense of fashion he got now ♥

another amazing episode.
really liked that they're using the opening song too! that song has a big emotional impact on me, ahaha
the only thing i miss is that 'countdown' that the original series had in the end of each episode. i know that the captain mentions in the preview 'xx days left before humanity...'
but it had a different impact in the first series, i don't know :3

Nice, the whole continent was obliterated. However, it would have been nice if they could've spared the island somehow and only destroyed the base.

This is an excellent remake/reboot. The level of visual quality is amazing and the story flows well. We're also slowly getting to know who the cast are.

I cannot believe more people haven't watched this on MAL. I suppose the lack of cat ears, pantyshots, onsei episodes, or magical girls make it unattractive for many in this forum

Too bad we didn't get to know that creepy cat lady before she died like that.. Oh well I'm pretty sure she wasn't in the original anyway.

That was kinda sad that the whole continent and all the wildlife there was destroyed just like that (including some people and other life it would seem)...

The Japanese sure love Star Trek... Well a mix of Star Trek and Stargate... with a hint of Star Wars... probably with other star-series that I haven't seen like Battlestar Galactica. But what can I say I love sci-fi, so this is right up my alley. It's a good thing I finally got around to watching this.

"A power that could destroy the entire universe" ... exaggeration much ?! Yes it seems powerful and badass enough but cmon. Also in real-time confrontation, its loading period would be a real burden.

Loved the detail attention during the warp scene, and the icing on the ship ticked the science box. Now if only they would remove smokey explosions and sound during space battles... but that would be boring i guess.

It's really following up with the original series quite well! Really liked the overall action and of course the first test fire of the Wave Motion Gun is always damn impressive (Goku has nothing against this blast :v).

Also loved it that they used the original lyrics and singer Isao Sasaki for the OP, as that pretty much was the main reason I started watching the original. A bit sad they didn't go with a more focused/related ED song or also used the original ones, but well in general it's okay but in my opinion unfitting.

So with this it sure makes me a whole lot happier and completely up to see what the rest of this series will have to offer!

They are heavily hinting the blond crew (I think her name is Mori) is actually from Iscandar. I think there explanation on wormholes is a little off. They are not really going faster than light, they are merely taking a shortcut.

Though I'm not a fan of Matsumoto, I love the sprinkling of references and homages here and there. So far, love the detail to military procedure, the action is genuinely engaging.

Though some people may abhor the ship designs, I for one absolutely adore it since they look like jumbo versions of the material fairies in zettai shounen.

Yep, that was impressive. And I also liked how stunned the crew was about the power they just unleashed. The captain seems quite terrified.

Does anyone know why the aliens don't speak their language anymore? In the first episode they spoke some other language but now they switched to japanese.

The episode proved to be full of emotion and a very compelling narrative. The time jump was in some ways very fascinating thanks to the splendid graphic quality and the dreamlike scenes that gave him that I do not know of mysterious. The scene of the destruction of the enemy base is really scary due to the use of the moving wave cannon. The part of the episode concerning the battle was interesting because of the excellent sequence of scenes that are all well coordinated from the point of view of the strategy. The CG was not always excellent, but at times it was really fabulous, the news that gradually come out are dense. I wonder what is the autopilot of the ship, if Sasha has been buried on Mars, how do they want to believe, who was in the capsule installed in the Yamato?

Really impressive visually, especially the warp test (love the music in that scene too) and cannon test

The said Australia, but the floating continent seems not as big as it is judging from the episode itself. I wish they spend more time here....

Haha, I finally get where does the name of one of my favourite anime blogs come from! I mean wavemotioncannon.

The opening was super old-school and I loved it! It mirrors the original visually while adding some new scenes, and the storyboards were provided by Hideaki Anno himself!

I wonder where did the alien language go though. It was so cool :-[ They also look very diverse. Humans alongside with some green guys with long ears? That's weird.

The warp was arguably the best moment in the episode. It's psychedelic nature was well-conveyed (this selective nudity tho), and the parallel with darts was incredible.

I also see more parallels with Nadia! In terms of the ship and its structure, I mean. And the typical sci-fi pile of terms from physics that probably don't make any sense, but are still cool :D

P.S. What was this Biblical reference about Megiddo :D
