I did not enjoy it because I was crying every 10-15 minutes. Man it was so cruel.

I did enjoy it because it was a well made movie. Yes, it was very sad. But that's the point. To enjoy something doesn't mean it has to be all fun.

Just because you were crying that does not make it a bad film. It’s supposed to be emotional so you reacted the same way the creators intended you to.

If you enjoyed it, maybe with a smirk to your face, then that would be a problem.

This piece of fiction wasn’t meant to be enjoyed. That’s why it’s a piece of art

While I really appreciated all the art and such, I'd agree it's not really for enjoying, thougth there are some good moments of childish levity snuck in like the beach adventure and so on.

Best way to look at it, is I doubth the people in it, or the estimated upward of half a million to 1million civilians who died to fire bombing and nuclear explosions, probably enjoyed it all that much either. The auther wrote it from his real experience(he's the boy in the story) except in real life
it's pretty much a true story I'm afraid...

Me neither. The ending was told at the beginning, which makes it lose all impact when things happen.

Yea isn't the happiest of stories for Studio Ghibli but an important one non-the-less and one I'm glad got produced with their amazing animation talent, directing skills and signature soundtrack style (Other interesting facts are it isn't a Hayao Miyazaki film, instead being by Ghibli other founder ' Isao Takahata' and Hideki Anno of Evangellion and Gunbuster fame worked on it as an animator👍).

Its definitely not my favorite. In fact I'm not sure I even like it. The characters are just way too unlikable. I get why its popular sure. But its just not entertaining or engaging at all. Other sad movies like schindlers list and 1917 are super engaging. Its what pulls the viewer into the movie imo. Grave of the fireflies is missing that. So when sad things happen you dont have any investment into the story and it falls flat.

I think this is oscar bait honestly. Because when I compare it to schindlers list in particular this movie doesn't even come close to measuring up to showing the true horrors of the period. It doesnt help that all the characters are assholes to the two main ones.

I dunno, I understand this is a highly emotional sort of movie. It just didnt hit the right chords for me personally and so I cant help but think its rather mediocre honestly.

He died doing what he wanted, no matter what, right? I bet he was happy.

Good luck with berserk Kouji Mori, you'll need all the help you can get. We believe in you.

More civilians were killed by the firer bombing and fallout of the collapsing societal structures, then were killed by the duo of nuclear bombs. Bit of an arbitrary reason to be honest, no offence😂.

it's pretty much a true story I'm afraid...so not really meant to be some big exploration of the horrors or an enjoyable exciting time but rather an expression of the author's felling's and the brilliant top tier production values(which it's amusing to even suggest are mediocre, no offence). It's only right to judge a film based on it's own merits and goals, rather then for what you felt it should of done. It's art firstly, a product secondly.

Hope that helps😎👍.

Knowing it's based on real story, it makes it even more sad. The brother suffered so much......I wish no one suffers like that ,even my enemy. I think I've never cried like this.

I hear you friend, it's part of what makes it such an important film, to remind us that even in war the 'bad guys' have lives too. No war is worth it is sort of the point, not for the innocents on both sides atleast.

It's far to easy to forget after all. Japan were as 'evil' as the Nazis, depending on the historian you ask maybe worse (they didn't do a holocaust but they worked civilians of the places they conquered and prisoners of war to death building bridges and railways before burning them alive to get rid of the evidence or when they were no longer usefull or to cover their retreats when the Australians and American arrived) but that doesn't mean they didn't have children of their own, it doesn't mean it was necessarily rigth for America to delibrately use fire bombs on the oldest parts of the country where things like houses were still made of wood.

It's an upsetting story for sure, and all the more important because of that👍.

It was one of the best movies that I would never re-watch and never recommend to anyone. Never have I cried while watching a movie or a show. I have been brought to the verge of tears or sometimes tears do come to my eyes, but I never understood how you could actually cry while watching a show - until I watched this. By the end, I was fighting back the tears so hard, it became difficult to breathe (mainly coz my granny was sitting in front of me and was thinking wtf happened to this guy). But when the music hits in the ending scene, I just couldn't help bursting into tears.
