Oh boy, I see the tension between Yoh and his rival Tao Ren. They set up the perfect stage and time for their inevitable fight.

Not a big fan of Tao Ren but his fighting spirit skyrocketed this episode. It's incredible how determined is to prove himself, especially against Yoh.

INSANELY GOOD episode.
I loved every second of it. I knew they were going to do this entire fight in an episode but it didn't feel rushed at all! Nice to see the Horohoro and Faust scenes too!

Can't wait for the next upcoming arc!

3 bottles of milk each day???? No way, let me make a note of it
In the end they both pass... I wasn't as excited as I thought I would be...
Hey, they seem to be getting along better now, don't they? But knowing Ren, he'll never admit it 😂

Aww Tamao came all the way to Tokyo for Yoh's final match. That's so sweet of her. I like Anna's attitude too of just staying home and waiting for Yoh to bring back the good news since she trusts him so much.
Anyway this is what I consider the first serious battle of this series that's not just there for Yoh to figure out how some new mechanic works. All the stuff prior felt more like a tutorial and now he can finally fight for real. I think they handled it decently enough, especially the first part.

Based on what I remember from the original anime, next should be the Ren's uncle arc. I wonder how many episodes that will take.

That episode was really good. The animation and music during Yoh vs Ren fight was great. I actually want to find our the name of the first soundtrack of their duel, cause it was that good.

But what the fuck happened to the score? When this remake started, it had a score pretty close to original adaptation (somewhere between 7.50-7.70, but now it dropped below 7.00

It will change soon, a lot of old Shaman King "fans" dont like this remake because its a bit rushed. They need to understand that they're just following the manga, and they trying to reach that point where old anime changed story and that's started from the very moment we Met with Hao. That will be episode 13 in remake (25 in old anime) I'm sure everything's gonna be better from that moment and score will be higher and higher.

An exciting match between Yoh and Ren ends in a draw, and both of them move on past the preliminary stage of the Shaman Fight. Time for things to get more serious as we progress further down the path toward becoming the Shaman King.

Also RIP Panda-kun. Fuck Ren's dad bro.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

This episode was so good. Man. Ren's father is so messed up wow. Even Ren's sister says that he will lose. I remember reading this in the manga in a magazine not knowing who won or lost. All I know is that Ren went into another over soul mode with a horse. Ren even admits that Yoh is like wind and water and brute force is something you cannot beat that with, and admits his lost. The funny irony is that Yoh ran out of spirit energy. Both ended in a draw that ran out of spirit energy. Then they argue like what is going to happen. Though both are going to the tournament which is funny and awesome at the same time. Looking forward to the next episode.

An amazing fight between Yoh and Ren. The showing of power was truly deadly from both sides. Honestly, I got to feel for Ren; the pressure he faces must be unbearable. Haha, the ending was pretty funny.

I quite enjoyed this episode. It felt a lot longer and in depth than it actually was (all a good thing), so that was surprising.

Ren is using both Oversoul and Hyoi Gattai, which is a unique spin.
Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.
Anger can be powerful but can only get you so far. Let people into your life even if some of them leave you in time.

Fight. Like. Hell. For everything and everyone you love. Always.

gotta say
things just started randomly exploding this fight. Pretty sure this spiritual energy stuff never made things explode in the past
not that I have a problem with explosions, but explosions for explosions sake will always remind me of Michael Bay (which at this point is probably a good thing considering the dead production value of this series)

Finally, a good episode warranted of Shaman King.

Hah, Tamao still quite concerned for Yoh, but Anna has always placed his trust in him, so all should be OK.

Yoh vs. Ren AGAIN, but you can feel the stakes and weight behind each of the competitor's pressures to become the Shaman King...unlike the last one which is just an introduction. Tao Ren is definitely stronger this time, and for once, he feels like a legitimate competitor with overflowing integration/fusion of Over Soul and Furyoku, which gives Yoh a chance to prove his growing skill.

Tao Ren's family is quite screwed, at least for their father who only believes in destruction and revenge.

It's funny, get reasonable for the long conflict between Tao Ren and Yoh: the power to both destroy and create, just like Yin and Yang. These 2 are indeed kindred spirits, and would do well to join forces together in the future.

For now, this match is declared a draw, and let the Opening Ceremony begin!

Finally an episode I can actually say was good. Of course not great or anything, but compared to the rubbish we were getting in the previous episodes this is very good.

The result of the match was pretty expected though. I saw it coming miles away.

No wonder why Ren's so somber. His father is as much of an edgelord as him. Anyways, F for cute Panda-kun.

All things considered, Yoh vs. Ren was actually entertaining to watch. Mostly for its OST rather than its visuals and writing tho.

Probably my favorite episode so far! That was great. Even though animation was lacking, you can still feel how awesome the fight is, plus the soundtrack is fantastic, Yuki Hayashi don't miss.

I think Ren is definitely my favorite character so far, he's so extra lmao. The way he said he drinks 3 glasses of milk everyday like a badass was fucking hilarious. Fuck Ren's dad though, that panda did not deserve that shit.

And with that, our resident stoner and edgelord are now bestfriends. Looking forward to the Shaman Fight.

3 glasses of milk every day... kids. That's how you grow tall.

Great fight between Asakura Yoh and Tao Ren. Too bad, the winner can't be decided because both ran out of Furyoku. So, both will enter the Shaman fight.

A very good episode, and it was only a little bit faster than the 2001 version. Such a good fight.

I may be remembering wrong, because the last time I read the manga was several years ago, but wasn't this fight mostly just Silva giving out endless exposition in the manga? It's what I remember most about it.

Also, this was always a thing, especially since this is the older of the two series, but the fact that Romi Park plays not one, but two characters who are angrily sensitive about their height is really funny.

This anime is still nowhere near the reboot that Shaman King deserves, and I blame that solely on the studio for doing such a horrid job all around (Save for art and the plot. Animation has been an absolute crapshoot that even the art can't save it. And it's automatically better than the old anime in terms of plot). But this episode was actually entertaining.

I might have regained a bit of hope, but I'm still not too optimistic about the future. Really wish someone else was handling the new anime, honestly.

Loved it. Absolutely awesome from the beginning to the end.
I'm not biased, wdym??

Panda was jarring, but I guess it's to showcase the nature of Dad Tao as well as the Tao family in general, basically giving us a little context. Which is appreciated. Ren's entrance was lol, I love how absolutely over the top theatrical he can get. And then revealing Ren's life and background, how his relationship with Yoh is intertwined - all in the middle of a bloody well done fight... Just. Brilliant.

And now kiss already, you dorks.

Well, I did say I'm going to have to post my episode reviews a bit later due to my personal life colliding with TV air time, but I did not plan on being days late. Well, next Thursday is a holiday so that's nice.

Okay back to actually talking about the episode, I absolutely loved it. 5/5 no questions asked. It is also the first time I felt like Yuuki Hayashi actually made an episode sound better than it's 2001 version.

But even with how good the episode was we once again lose some vital power system info that makes it even harder to fully comprehend.

Anime : "I didn't evade it, you hit me 4 times with this attack"
Manga : "I didn't evade it, you hit me 4 times with this attack, this is my 7th oversoul"

the change may not look like much, but it makes a world of difference for the power system as the whole.

The head scratcher of this fight was supposed to be "How did Yoh just break Ren's oversoul? OSP of 30 should not be able to break Ren's 100"

And then the big reveal is that Ren is so mentally absent from this fight, he didn't even notice the fact he broke Yoh's over soul 7 times already. As oversoul is maintained by your full concentration, emphasis on full - yeah it makes sense that Ren wouldn't be able to solidify his oversoul when he doesn't even notice his hits are dealing damage - he came to this fight both wanting to win and wanting to lose - so it's only fair he walked out with a draw ^^'.

We also got a nasty animation error making it even more convoluted. Come on guys, you showed Ren having 150 furyoku and using OSP of 100, he'd have 50 left after the last attack if that were the case. OSP of the last over soul was obviously 150.

We also do not even address, though it is still shown, the concept of a contained, or as I call it perfected oversoul. These new shiny O.S do NOT cost any mana to attack. They still become weaker and more fragile when the user isn't focused, but you only lose the mana when it is broken.
There are, of course, exceptions to that, like Horohoro creating ice or just maintaining an oversoul for long periods of time etc.

We did not get the dialogue from spectators of this fight, many of whom are important characters later on, hopefully we will get this in the next episode.
Though Hao's first spoken line of dialogue kinda only works during the fight, so I guess we lost that one.

But do not let this wall of complaints put a downer on this episode, it was great, easily the best episode we got so far. The music was great, the cut focused on important things, this fight pretty much perfectly showcased a Shaman King fight. Most of the episode was dialogue and yet it still felt action packed when you were watching it.
Of course this being a Yoh vs Ren fight, which is some of the best of early Shaman King helps too.
And hey, it looks like next week we MAY be getting a slow down episode, which would GREAT. Though I am slightly worried for the upcoming mini-arc, if it'll get one episode again... but well, it'll work out somehow.

Oh yeah also the quote from Yoh "Muri wo shinai dakara murijanai" I have no idea how netflix will translate this line, hell I do not even know how I would translate it (I don't do impossible, so it's possible? does not sound as amazing) - but it's god tier.

The best fight so far and still wouldn’t call it good. It was just decent to solid.

Does it get better from here? I’m not expecting the fights to get much better given how lackluster the animation has been so far, so I guess I am asking more if the story and characters get better from here.

At this rate I’m probably going to drop this anime after episode 11.

Poor Panda.

It wasn't there in the original anime cause they thought it was too graphic for kids.

But this new remastered Shaman King is to be based on the "FULL MANGA" with the actual endings and such, so they include it.

They probably chose Studio Bridge because they are relatively an unknown studio and their work costs cheaper compared to a well-known studio. There is also the fact that Shaman King is very much popular in Japan so they know regardless of the animation quality it will make money.
If you want to truly experience the Shaman King's story you need to read the manga there is no other way for it. This adaptation is just a cheap copy of it.
