I watched sprited away today and I think it's good but not great. I just enjoyed so I rated that 6/10, animations are great, I love that plot but it has got any special characters or other thing for me.Did I missed symbolisms or something? And sprited away categoried drama. I didn't see any dramatic scene. am I wrong? idk I'm sad for this disappointment. I"ll say again it's not bad or average in my opinion but it's clearly "Fine" category for me. what do you think about this?

It's Miyazaki's 3rd best film.
It's a 9/10 for me I really love the imagery.

You could read into deeper meanings (or read/watch an analysis), but honestly I just thought it was a beautifully made movie, and I love the characters and world building.

Because you and I have watched it in 2021 its alright for us. But imagine this quality and animation 20 years ago It's phenomenal. I wish I could have watched it at that time, I will get totally different much better experience.

Its like The Matrix If u haven't watched it at that time, and u watch it now it will be bad because the effects is nothing compared to nowadays effects.

I love spirited away, because it was my first anime ever. I connect many nostalgic memories with it and I love the plot and the visuals. I gave it a 10/10, because I can watch it over and over again. I can see why you would think it's okay, but I fell in love with this movie a long time ago so it's something special for me :)

Its close to it. The fantasy, the world-building, imagery, the music,etc... you could get caught up in that and have the ultimate escape. I do think the plot is a little iffy though but I still give 10/10.

Miyazaki’s movies are meant to be felt more than watched. Spirited away is visually stunning, but it is the feelings you should be keeping an eye on. It is amazing how in his movies he manages to rarely a “bad guy”, making the viewer end up empathizing with each character in the story.
Watch more of his movies, I think his content is in a category of its own and the more you watch his movies the more you learn to understand them.

But don’t expect much flashy explosions or other cheap tricks Hollywood loves using nowadays. His movies are usually slow paced, have time for “the little things” and give of more of a slice of life feeling (even though they aren’t).

What makes spirited away special, for me, is how you can feel kindness at every scene, at every turn. The hero doesn't overcome her adversities by strength, cunning or speed, but by kindness and empathy. And it is filled with small symbolisms that kids can relate to easily, like “hold your breath”.

I think you should watch it again, but this time not expecting beautiful images or crazy plot twists. Watch it expecting feeling kindness, feeling at peace and feeling “like the world isn’t such a bad place after all”.

It is good but not a masterpiece. I know better miyazaki movies than spirited away like mononoke hime or howl's castle. I ve rewatched them all and spiritied away was kinda boring when i did this. 8/10 for me.

Of course it's a masterpiece, enjoyment has nothing to do with it. It encapsulates the craftmanship of the later analog area, but even in content relevance its scope is such that will never be seen again, though it might not be obvious if you're not familiar with J-culture in general and J-cinema in particular.

It’s the same for me. It just feels like a really good kids movie to me. Like how Lion King is really good in my eyes, but maybe to someone who hasn’t watched it while growing up it’s just ok.

I think surely, just because the incredible attention to detail, the great story and also the awesome style of ghibli movies, so in general definitely 10/10

Definitely not a masterpiece. Its drawn out, boring, and its message is convoluted. Its trying really hard to be oscar bait and I find the movie to be rather pretentious overall.

Ghibli does simplicity best. Kiki, arietty, cat returns, porco rossoue, all these movies have a simple premise. Yet each one is good fun and accomplishes what they set out to do.

The true masterpiece ghibli movies deviate from the norm and show a slightly more complex story. These would be howls moving castle, princess mononoke, and nausica of the valley of the wind.

Spirited away tries taking another step in complexity past ghiblis other masterpieces and loses all of the charm and engagement that those stories had.

At least in my dumb opinion.
He died doing what he wanted, no matter what, right? I bet he was happy.

Good luck with berserk Kouji Mori, you'll need all the help you can get. We believe in you.

No, it’s definitely not a masterpiece. When I compare this to anime movies I’ve seen like Disappearance of Haruhi and Madoka Magica Rebellion, it comes nowhere near close. Even when I compare this to movies like Lion King or Wall-E it falls flat on it’s face.

i think it's overyhyped generally, but in this chat space it's overhated. spirited away was never my favourite, i've been watching ghibli movies since i was a kid. i gave it a 7-8 out of 10 bc it's not my favourite, and i didn't enjoy it the same way i enjoyed castle in the sky (11/10) and porco rosso (11/10.) but nonetheless i'd say it's a masterpiece along w miyazaki's other works. it has amazing visuals, soundtrack, and story-- so idk how people can give it anything short of really good.

I agree, a very average movie for me. People are overrating and praising it just to not look weird or get roasted/challenged by the toxic fandom. yeah and sometimes you will find a group of people who are trying to make it sounds so sophisticated and deep (e.g. oh it is a metaphor of sex industry or some other deep ideology) which clearly is not the case. it is just a normal kids movie.

In a word, yes.

There's a reason it's the only standalone film I've assigned a 10/10 score to on MAL surpassing even the majesty that is Kaguya-Hime.

There's also a reason why it's the only anime feature which has a place in my overall cinematic Top 10 list, and between anime, Western animation, and live action, I've seen a good 5,000+ films.

It's the embodiment of the Japanese wabi-sabi principle on film. The only one I've personally witnessed capable of imparting a sense of retroactive nostalgia so powerful and across generational lines that it seems to defy and overcome spacetime itself.

It's one of those singular type experiences that you either "get" and it "speaks to you" or you just don't and it doesn't, and no amount of explaining and debating in words is really going to convince anyone because works like this, while also fulfilling a dual function of having surface level broad appeal, are going to wield a more powerful resonance with a subset of individuals, among which some professional critics are likely to be represented, and a lot of it is just based on innumerable subtle beats and by themselves, minor moments and little nuances and flourishes littered throughout the reception of which will depend on one's own life experiences. The strength of atmosphere is ethereal and overwhelming, yet parts of it can summon to mind for us the dirty or cozy or simply boring parts of our own childhood or adolescence or that time between right now and a vague memory from a foggy late night three months back.

In my opinion, it depends on each person's preferences.

For me, it is 9.5/10.

INCLUDE SPOILERS:
This whole movie is great fantasy, just like the good old Disney's movies. Music, art, characters are wonderful, but I missed a few little things to be perfect.
- To the point, the ending lacks a clear punch line. What happened to Haku? Has Chihiro arrived to the village? Maybe she met Haku? 30 seconds more would be enough.
- Kaonashi found a new home, but it's a pity that it wasn't explained exactly why he liked Chihiro so much. Was it really loneliness and the fact that Chihiro invited him inside?
- Did Chihiro's hair scrunchie helped anything? Was it just such a talisman? Maybe it warned Chihiro to don't look back until she reaches the outer end of the tunnel?
- Soundtrack was wonderful but in two moments was cut too suddenly.

Due to these unknowns, after watching it, I was not 100% satisfied, but "just" 99%. Anyway, the movie is nice. I will recommend watching it for my children one day. It creates nice memories.

I just watched it yesterday for the first time......It was a 7/10 experience for me, still I rated it as a higher 8 out of 10............ I mean you don't see a kid's movie with so many symbolisms and themes......... I personally liked the theme of "preserving our old Cultures" and "conserving Nature"
Now is it a Masterpiece? No I don't think so, but it is enjoyable and good one time watch for grown ups too

I've just rewatched it. I'm not a Ghibli fan. Not even close. A few years ago it was a 7/10, really good fantasy, nice characters (with some mentions to be made), amazing art and OST, but that was it for me. I can't believe how much your perspective can change depending on your knowledge of some apparently unrelated topics. It was all mostly because I did not understand No-Face's character and what he stood for besides the capitalist bs, as during my first watch it felt like a pointless antagonist to some extent. I'm not saying it's deep or that you have missed the point if you consider it average or even bad, I'm just saying that at the moment I wholeheartedly consider this movie to be a masterpiece, for the ideology behind it exists, is clear enough if you're willing to invest some time to analyze it and mainly because I sort of agree with it. Also, the bathhouse scene with No-Face's realization of what makes the world go round is probably one of the best scenes in anime imho. 10/10

Man, I swear, some of these P/G-rated movies and series have amazing writing. (eg: Precure sometimes, Kemono no Souja Erin, Cardcaptor Sakura, LWA just to name a few)

Edit: spelling
