THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- Yup, no matter what hardship or situation Kumoko finds herself in, she moves forward. Admirable really. It goes to show that size doesn't matter when she's got the guts and skills she's learned. On the other hand, there's also some focus on the real world with the teens outdoors. Very typical daily life style for them imo. |

wow this episode was quite nice, lots of cool backstory with the flashbacks for the student group, kumoko was actually rly cute before. kumoko getting even more alternate-minds lol, wonder how her fight is gonna turn out, that dragon seems like quite the tough opponent. also, that ending scene though... i guess thats kinda good for her since they wont try to come and eliminate her |

They definitely paced this one a lot slower, so I guess they were rushing to get to this point which I guess makes sense since this is where the plot starts showing up. But it did leave this episode feeling a little emptier (definitely better than this season of slime though, that thing is draggin). Looks like its going to take 5 episodes to finish up book 2, which should pace us to finish around book 5. Its worth noting that this human chaper and this spider chapter are next to each other in the book so we are not ahead on the humans anymore. Interesting that they cut the "minions" from this battle, but I guess its because its a battle mechanic that doesn't come up ever again. EDIT: Actually I just realized they cut the "lord of the sea" and this is the dragon, weird that they skipped some of the lead in to it though so maybe next episode. So maybe we are still on pace to do parts of book 6 since the fire dragon is the start of book 3. I am eager to see how it continues. Even if I end up overanalyzing each episode lol. |

Loved seeing more of the kids’ backstory. Red haired girl’s design just does something to me, man. Wish we’d got more of them this week, especially after the setup we got last week. Kumoko vs the dragon was just hard for me to watch because of the CGI. I get that it’s easier on the staff to have CGI for fast paced action scenes, but it’s just so out there for me. I’m looking forward to the human kids being developed more in the final stretch of this season. |

Kumoko is in a tough spot facing that dragon. Even with it already hurt before she even tried to take it on doesn't help her much. She had some quick thinking with the poison on top of poison magic right into the monsters mouth but still didn't work. I really enjoy seeing her cooperation with the parallel minds she's developed now. All three working together to defeat this dragon. Good thing she's learning the magic and developed a parallel mind just for doing that considering all the powerful monsters she's come across in the past. The human segment at the beginning of the episode is interesting since it shows us more backstory of them as classmates. Shun remembering better days with Hugo and Kyouya. Makes sense they think Kumoko is dead since she's a monster hidden deep in a cave. |

Great to see more backstory to help us get more used and to like these human characters more, and to really show more personality from them. Though I doubt our spider is of course dead. It'd be a surprise if she was, can't wait to see how she'll overcome this next week. |

Lots of cool backstories in this episode. Our little spider was pretty cute in her previous life as well. Pretty nice episode. Then, we had the Kumoko vs Dragon fight, once again the CG was the lowest part of the fight for me. It's not getting any better than before. I wanna know what's going to happen in the next episode. |

This episode was probably the worst one so far, not satisfying at all; even Aoi yuuki 's performance cannot save something like that. Episode was all over the place, trying to cram as much unrelated stuff as possible (wouldn't be surprised if it skipped a lot compared to usual either) in as little time as possible. The general feel was no build up to anything, no tension felt in the battle as well, and expectations after the previous episodes that raised so many questions were left 100% unanswered. the direction felt amateurish to a point I've honestly rarely seen in an anime. When the viewer is left feeling that the episode was just throwing stuff at a wall and see what sticks, clearly something was really wrong. |

A slow episode, but a backstory-heavy one to see both the life of former Hiiro "Spooky" Wakaba (a.k.a Kumoko) and her classmates before the reincarnation, and the Administrator D part (albeit very briefly). It's fascinating to see that everyone's personalities have largely stayed the same, but only Oka-sensei knows the full story from the outcome. Aoi Yuuki remains the central comical part about Kumoko's character to identify more OP powers and abilities...and bickering against her parallel clones. The battle with the CG magma dragon is bog standard-fare, but quite a challenge to face. Though I must say, judging Kumoko is dead, that sure took me for a surprise (though we all already know that's not the case). |

I think the end goal is to have whole class united together, so I believe dead students aren't actually died, maybe they're with demon lord side? Anyway, things aren't looking good when spider is still venturing alone in the dungeon after 8 episodes, and it seems like this show has no intention to make her reunited with her classmate at all. |

We finally saw how most of the characters looked in their previous life along with what type of personality they had. Also I guess Wakaba Hiro's Kumoko. She looked pretty cute in her previous life. Back to Kumoko lol poor girl keeps getting in trouble and this time she found a fire dragon who is insanely strong. Also if Wakaba's kumoko then I wonder why Oka chan said she's dead. |

Was nice to Kumoko in her past life and to get reminded of the contrast between her old and new self. The rockstar-venting and parallel mind sketch were both pretty hilarious haha. Also thrilling action again at the end. It's really engaging when you're so invested in Kumoko's character. It's implied that Wakaba is Kumoko, but given the nature of this show and what other people wrote in the forums I expect some twist. |

We saw the lives of the student before they were sent to this world. It was nice seeing their backstory. Kumoko acquired two more parallel minds if you can call it. Though I felt sorry for the last one for being told to shut up. XD I wonder what Oka-chan meant when she said Wakaba is dead. |

All the students that had some type of focus during the flashback are the ones that are/will be relevant to the story, the rest is on the elf village with a few exceptions (like the ones that died for example). So, I suggest to remember how they were and try to figure out who is who. It's not that hard but, it's good to see how the isekai changed them and how much they stay the same. |

Hiiro Wakaba wasn't the one labelled "Spooky", it was Negishi Shouko (the girl that appeared behind Shun). Hiiro Wakaba was said to be "unbelievably beautiful", to the point of her beauty being considered inhuman. |

That right there is a clusterfuck of spoilers up there. So, I have a few thoughts on how the adaptation's handling reveals - if you haven't read the WN or LN, click at your own risk. So, I'm quite glad that the side chapter of the students before reincarnation was adapted - I wasn't expecting it at all because it got cut between the WN and LN. It's a really great bit of characterisation for who the students all used to be before waking up as princes or monsters or whatever. It also gives us our first look at Negishi Shouko, aka Rihoko, aka 'Spooky'. At this point in the WN, I was about 75% convinced she was Kumoko. Gloomy, creepy girl gets reincarnated and her soul best matches a spider's - made sense to me. Then, of course, it turns out that she isn't, but I appreciated the misdirect. At this point in the story, we didn't really have any reason to focus on Wakaba Hiiro, because we didn't know anything about her. Shun remembers that she was really cute... but that was it. Oka saying that she was dead just cemented the idea that Kumo wasn't her. The anime... isn't doing that. As presented, it heavily hints that Kumo is Wakaba, with Fei's musing on her bullying and constant cuts between Shun's crew talking about Wakaba and whatever Kumo's up to. Even when we're told that she's dead, the thought isn't 'oh, so someone else must be Kumo', it's 'So Wakaba must have died between the two timelines' or 'Oka must be lying' or 'maybe Oka can't detect monsters well and that's why she thinks she's dead'. There's nothing wrong with that. But I really enjoyed the misdirect that Kumo was Negishi, and am disappointed that it seems to have disappeared from this adaptation. As an aside - in the WN I definitely read Ooshima Kanata (who reincarnated as Katia) as a trans girl in the closet or in denial. The LN makes it a bit more clear that Katia's situation isn't really that simple, and I hope this adaptation does as well. |

So, wait, she is dead? After levelling up this much, a fire dragon came and finished her up. That dragon was very smart I must admit. We got backstory on how life was before the reincarnation as well. The mystery is building up here. |

It's nice, we got to see a bit more of when they were living in the real world, especially for the other reincarnated students. There are so many separate minds for Kumoko now, that's perfect xD it's funnier with that much Kumoko And the fight against the dragon is quite tense, it's sure a rough one, but I'm sure she'll manage to beat it in the next episode |

Cool episode. The direction wasnt as good as some of the other episodes (which i will continue to defend that yes, they did have good direction) but it was serviceable besides some somewhat confusing shots. Parallel minds is one of my favorites things in the original and they are doing a great job with it, they are always funny to me. The dragon is also a pretty nice opponent, besides being in somewhat questionable CGI, its good that we dont have an opponent that immediately gets defeated when the episode ends, it helps build some sort of tension, although its pretty obvious who is going to win. Zefyris said: Strange you thought this was "rushed", as not only me, but a lot of people in this thread, thought it was reasonably slow, as there really were just 3 segments, students backstory, kumoko learning magic and dragon fight which isnt even over yet. First of all, Negishi was a girl? lol. Now, I don't know if it has something to do with it but it's curious that Shouko has a fang when in the OP you can see that the demon lord also has one. Interesting interaction between Shun and our spider friend when she was human, I wonder if this will mean they will ever cross paths. Then you have Katia who in her previous life as Kanata already seemed like she wasn't entirely interested in women so you know what that means.... And finally Kyouya, the last of Shun's group of friends who according to Oka is fine but doesn't want to reveal more information... interesting. I've always liked the human side so I'm happy to see more of their backstory. Oh no, Kumoko is dead! Of course not in her timeline but if you take into account the theory that the human side occurs later than hers, then maybe she really is dead in the present? Or maybe Oka is lying, who knows. |

I thought the episode was fine, it was a little slow for me compared to other episodes. I did like how we got more backstory from Kumoko's classmates, just wish there was more of them, but in small doses when there's no action. I thought the fight was cool and I thought it was funny how the other spiders said "shut up" when the new one came. What a way to end at a cliffhanger. |

The school flashback took half an episode just to establish the spooky girl and that Shun was nice to the MC. There are too many names and characters for me to remember relationships between them in past and current lives. The CGI on the fire dragon was a little rough. I don’t know why the MC chose to fight it and not escape when she was overmatched. |

Fei has a discussion about how she found shun attractive at first, but now doesn't find any human features appealing. Katia in the book struggles a lot with viewing herself as male until she gives up on her prior life and accepts her new self entirely. She has scenes like "are you okay changing with the girls?" to which she says something similar to Fei that it doesn't seem to bother her and the other girls start to view her as her new self instead of her old self. She has a couple "Does shun even see me as a woman?!?" moments which she identifies that its strange that its so important to her. This is a little more spoilery about the reincarnation itself, I won't be too specific. The reincarnation process took into account their prior selves but it was somewhat arbitrary. It didn't make them into their "true selves" it just gave them something fitting or something that was "more interesting" like was Fei (Shinohara? idk) really a dragon inside or was it just for fun. So maybe kanata was trans or gay or not and that influenced the reincarnation or it was "more interesting" to make him reincarnate that way. I think the only way it was portrayed in the book was that he wasn't all that interested in the girls more than being attracted to men or being female on the inside. Left up to the reader in that sense. My interpretation is that Kanata was pretty expressly male and Katia is pretty expressly female. From a literature perspective it was perhaps in poor taste to not have had at least one other gender swap reincarnation to serve a as a reference, I don't recall any others but like half the class is stuck in the elf village and they get little focus so I could have forgotten somebody. Japan isn't know for being super LGBT friendly in policy or in literature, so I was surprised they handled it in a mature way in the first place. Given that the anime has basically ignored Katia's development I don't expect it to have much focus. Which is probably wise seeing as even if the author did alright the anime writers could easily mess it up. |
