Agree!

I used to like him, he was Reiner "protect to chibi ones" Braun,
but when I find out he traitor and with these parts, I can't like him... now he irritates me even more.
But he had no choice, he was a child and he was manipulated. can you really blame him ?

Still boring for me but better than the previous 2 episodes, felt nice seeing some old faces again and the ending was a solid point to finish the episode off. Pacing didn't bother me much unlike some of the comments I'm seeing here personally. I'm getting more and more used to the visual changes and I can say MAPPA are doing fairly decently animation wise, still prefer the colors and designs of WIT's though despite MAPPA showing more direction flair with better usage of camera shots.

Just to let you know manga readers hated these chapters, in the manga what worse is that they were following it monthly, while for you the pacing is faster and you only have to wait a week for new episodes, so you probably would even hate it more if you were following this arc monthly.

The good thing here is we haven't even touch on the great parts yet, but next episode is when things will start to set into motion.

Slow? Bro they were speedrunning through Reiners past.
Really? It felt like they could spend less time and still get the same point/info across

They skip so much stuff, but they took out the unnecessary things, sure some of it is good content but people forget that manga and anime is too different thing and not because it was done well in the manga mean it would also be done well if they were to adapt the entire back story.

Not me, but I remember following these chapters on a monthly basis and people hated it, "can we see our main cast now?" maybe when you read it all the chapters were release so it wasn't as bad, but following it monthly from the beginning was a different thing and then having to be waiting for an entire month for a new chapter was not easy.

@Marinate1016

Do not misunderstand me I'm speaking of what I saw on snk reddit and other places, following this arc monthly in its early stages chapter 91 and having to wait a month really frustrated a lot of readers, I think you can atleast understand, being thrown into a different place with new characters and not seeing your main cast for months, its understandable why some persons were annoyed at first.

but then they realize that the pay off was worth it and even doing a re read many realize it wasn't bad.

I'm a manga reader myself. Been reading it for quite some time now so even then, I didn't find the pacing to be that drastic at least from the gist of it.

An overall good episode. To be honest, I liked the last episode better than this one.

I understand the fast pacing is more preferable here than in the later, more important parts of the arc but this storytelling didn't sit that well for me. I feel like it would've been more impactful if we spent a little longer with each scene. The pace at which events were happening made Reiner's backstory with his mother seem like it was a last-minute thought that was added by the author to justify the actions of a character, and this is something AoT wouldn't do at all. At least not for a character as big as Reiner. I don't know how that unfolds in the manga. Maybe it's the same I don't know.
The same goes for the whole invasion sequence. Unfortunately, all of it felt somewhat meaningless because we gained nothing new and it didn't really leave much of an impact on me personally. This is the part where the story should've made me sit with the trio for an extended period of time and made me feel for them even more. Things could've been much more emotional than they were. This shows that you can't really have this payoff when the scenes are that much shorter and are constantly alternating. Then again, sacrifices were made hopefully for the greater good of the arc. The last episode made me sympathize with Reiner more than this one did.

For the production and animation, some scenes were very well done while others felt somewhat iffy. I could see a lot of inconsistency, especially in Reiner's design, but nothing too distracting. That's just me nitpicking.

I really liked the warrior training scenes at the beginning, and the Eren and Falco scene at the end. Those were definitely the highlight of the episode as they were really well done. The colors, Eren's words, and the transitions, it was all so beautiful I really enjoyed it.

The assault of Reiner, Annie and Berthold to the wall, honestly is better in the manga, I suppose that it was to be expected that the adaptation would decay at any moment, but hey, it is understandable, it is not that it was a blunder. Episode 5 is sure to break the internet!

Damn, it's pretty insane to get the full background about events that happened so long ago, episode 1 in fact. Can't help but feel bad for the state of the Eldians in Marley. Reiner, Annie and Bertholdt. :(

All the flashback scenes were great.

So that really was Eren at the end? Yuki Kaji kind of gives it away but I wouldn't have recognized him otherwise.

You see? Anime only are already complaining about the slow pacing even though they are speeding through a lot of content, in anime form things have to be sped up a bit for content wise. I do understand where you are coming from but a adaptation should be its own thing not a copy paste from the manga.

Yeah I know. AOT has never been a exact copy of the manga. And the infoformation in this episode is still enough to understand Reiner.
I personally would've liked it if it would be a bit more fleshed out considering that Reiner is my 2nd favourite character of this story and the protagonist of this arc. But I guess with only 16 episodes its not possible.
But as long as the rest is fleshed out I wont complain.

I liked to see the storyline of how Reiner, Annie and Bertholt managed to get within the walls. Now it also makes sense why Ymir turned back into a human, she actually ate the Jaw Titan and got it's powers. I wonder why this never occured to me. Or I might have forgotten.

Hello there Eren! Now I want to know how you even got into that city, but that's for another time. This shit has me hyped. Can't wait to see the confrontation.

Hmm yeah I am probably biased since I've read the manga. But I still find it hard to hate him since his environnement lead him to that, yes he could have done better, way better, but his whole family and everyone around him thinks like that. He wanted to save the world, to make his mom proud and to live with his father. I personnaly don't think I would do better. Him betraying marh also equals to his death and to the death of his whole family, what could he do ?

It was nice to see how some events came to be in Attack on Titan 1st season.

When Annie kicked Reiner's butt it reminded me of when Levi kicked Eren.

I thought the perspective of Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie during the attack on Wall Maria was done well. Obviously both Reiner and Bertolt had a part to play in the destruction itself, but did Annie call all of the titans over to invade the wall? Or was she unconscious the whole time?

Also, showing the mental toll the characters took from carrying out their "mission" was a nice touch.

All-in-all, I thought this episode was really good. I haven't read the manga, yet, so I can't compare any details. I will defiantly be reading it after the show is wrapped up.

Oh my god, the next episode will definitely have Eren revealing himself!! The attack on Paradis could've been easily avoided if they left like Annie said. Reiner got beat up horribly as a child but still not a horrible backstory so I despise him, but a little less. I was suprised when they cut off the episode while Eren and Falco were talking.

Honestly didn't mind the fast pacing. It was fast, but it was also smooth for the most part and it flowed well. I'm a bit biased since I've read the manga, but regardless, the backstory is pretty easy to follow. They also didn't cut anything of importance, only some scenes for immersion, which is kinda understandable to be irritated about, but there's a lot of dense chapters to adapt. Saving screen time is super important and they did it really well. MAPPA is doing great, wayy above my expectations.

GREAT episode, they really nailed it with the animation imo on this and the 2DS look fucking amazing!

as for the plot: kid reiner looked like falco at the start in bed and he sounds too similar to kid eren for my ears lol,so it seems Marcel death is what casued his split persona? also im at loss why annie would chase kenny or even know he exists? and im confused about the hanged guy story meaning.i have to rewatch for that.

also about the end scene

also half eldian/half marley, wouldn't he be weaker then full eldian? he proably shouldn't be able to transform anyway. i wonder if thats why he's so weak compared to others

but great episode nonetheless! god bless hayashi!

The ones who are clearly upset about this episode are the ones who are expecting a 2011 Hunter X Hunter-esque adaptation of the source material. My SO (who is a fan of both AOT manga and anime) told me that the scenes that were cut from this episode were of least significance to the narrative based on how the whole episode was scripted/directed.

Other than that, this episode has been well-played. Nothing felt like something was left out. It has is its kino moments, which I personally loved. Only thing is that the WIT inserts really felt out of place due to palette difference. That's my only qualms about it.

Those with dirty minds will find my Steam pic offensive

Overall, this episode was pretty great.

They totally turned Reiner from being one of the most hated characters to one of the most lovable. It's nice seeing everything from his point of view. Also those childhood memories of Reiner in camp were welcome additions.

Kinda sucks that they didn't include the complete story of what happened before they broke down the wall of shiganshina district. It really leaves why Annie wasn't a part of it completely unexplained so yeah that's a bummer.

I gotta say this was a nice episode. There were some scenes that were cut out or omitted. Where Reiner fails so many tests, and as Porco mentioned his loyalty is the only thing that matters. Some other scenes were also omitted or cut a little. Though not too much was cut out. But I wish it could've been there for good reasons. But it is not much of a big deal. I guess they are trying to get to the point. That ending is nicely done. Can't say much for now. That much is considered.

This one is a bit more actually rushed compared to the last two episodes. You do have a bit of details cut on what exactly Reiner, Annie and Bert were doing in all their time there. It's not super essential character development and I understand why of everything to cut but I would have liked it.

The actual stuff they adapted was great though honestly I have been looking forward to this adaption mainly just to hear Yoshimasa Hosoya and Yuki Kaji deliver some of the big lines. The last Eren scene was a big deal when I read it in the manga . They have 13 episodes to adapt around 21-23 chapters which will be back a bit more to the pacing of previous seasons.

I am an anime-only but after watching this ep,I went and skimmed through ch 94 - 97.5(my first time ever touching the manga) to see what was the ruckus all about. And yes they did cut things. Now obviously its an anime adaptation.Nothing is going to be 100% adapted and I am ok with what they did,but some scenes could have been compromised to adapt other important things.I think their choice of what to adapt was a bit off this ep(The last two were perfectly fine). They could have trimmed something here and there to show us the Reiner gang's pursuit to the first wall, but they directly resumed it from after Berthold became the Colossal. They also erased a important(not too much to the story but as Reiner's development) conversation between Reiner,Berthold and Annie which I want them to show later, someway, somehow.

That said,MAPPA did nail with some of the scenes, the warrior candidates fighting against the army at the start and the brawl between Reiner and Annie, though Reiner looked a bit disfigured sometimes.Don't expect season 1 and 2's qualtiy of smooth animation always, but MAPPA did show us their cards in all three episodes.First with the good use of CGI,then with dynamic animation in dialogue heavy second episode and then with the story-rich impactful third ep.Thatssaid,we know they have the capability to deliver when it matters.

They can start using plethora of different soundtracks from previous seasons instead of repeating that same old trailer one, just like they are freely showing WIT's animation in the flashbacks.Although I did hear one or two tracks from previous seasons this episode.Start using more MAPPA.Now whatever I said was coming from someone who read the chapters but after the watching the episode as an anime-only I was completely blown off. This ep was really good and felt "shit's about to get real good" type of vibe.I mean that is bound to happen, animation can only do so much to an episode if the story is too good and the brilliance is in delivering that story which MAPPA did quite well tbh.5/5 as an anime only but 4/5 after reading the chapters. They nailed it with the ending. Now I didn't know whether it was intended in the manga but the anime expect us now by now the identity of the one-legged guy

I only want that conversation between Reiner,ANnie and Bert about how they can't return back, otherwise a great ep.And also is this thing about adapting all the chapters in 16 ep right.I mean they will add a second part or movie right?

First 16 episodes are adapting till 122th chapter. Manga will finish around 138-139th, this also means that rest of the 13 episodes are adapting 25 chapters, so the pace should be normal from this point

I’m so glad that they went into Reiner’s backstory. The fact that he was the weakest and had the most dedicated mindset really makes his split personality and attempted suicide so understandable. I’m glad we finally got to see Eren, fitting that he snuck into the society in a similar way to how Reiner and the other warriors did.
