Well if it didn't have Dera it would be more like K-ON, which I love. I'd be fine if their relationship wasn't very important in the original series.

I haven't even watched the movie yet (almost done the series lol) but I wish the entire series was just about Tamako and Mochizou.

I think they needed a well "gimmick" is one way to put it, to distinguish the show but now when i look back on it, Dera trying to find his prince a bride was the plot (lol I know) of the TV series and with that being done, he doesn't really have much more of a role now does he? But yeah, you could consider the film just as a way to tie up the loose ends that were left over.

I see where you are coming from, but then you would have lost all of that comic relief that was Dera, and he was funny. I would not have cared if they had left a plot hole in the series and never brought the prince into it. Tamako Market was meant to be a happy go lucky anime that dealt with some very serious subjects. To deal with those subjects and not become a drama, they used Dera who always showed up when things started to get too heavy. Would Tamako Market been an even better anime without Dera? Maybe, but then it would not have been so much fun to watch. That's just my two cents.

P.S. Sorry if this isn't so clear, I am really short on sleep right now. I can't seem to say want I want.

In a way I guess most people couldn't find a liking to Dera and whatever he brought into the story

That whole thing about Tamako being a princess for a foreign island because she has a relationship to mochi and has a spot on her neck was bullcrap writing

The series had to have a main thread to keep from going apart. Dera and the princess finding mission provided that thread. It could have been developed and composed in a better way, omitting filler episodes like Ep.7 (bad scriptwriting by a bad scriptwriter), and directed in less hurried way at the end. But that was Tamako Market, a short 13 episodes series. Which I enjoyed so-so.

Dera or no Dera isn't the issue, I think.

The TLS Movie is a success because Director Naoko Yamada concentrated on what she excels at: detailed psychological description of people, particularly those of maturing age. With assistance from Chief Animator Yukiko Horiguchi who can draw just hands and legs of girls to express their emotions, and ace scriptwriter Reiko Yoshida who can make sensible and consistent scripts without characters over-talking, plus the crafty musicians, it was obvious it was going to be another good movie.

The direction by Yamada of Hyouka Ep.14, Chuunibyo ED, Kyoukaino Kanata Ep.5, Free ES Ep.12 were all great. I like Kyoto Animation very much, and I'm sure directors Ishihara and Takemoto are good in their own way; animators Nishiya and Kadowaki are great talents - but for me, it's Yamada (+ Horiguchi) which make things magical.

I hope they can make another movie on maturing, to make up a trilogy about adolescence and maturing (K-on! Movie!, Tamako Love Story, and now what next?).

I disagree. Although many found Dera annoying, he is necessary for the show to be what it want to be which tells us the happy go lucky life of the shopping district. However it is a different matter if you dislike the theme of the show in the first place.

There's not enough relationship stuff to fit into a thirteen episode series. This movie was short and sweet. I think I prefer having a light-hearted main series and a more serious sequel movie like this.

Just finished the movie and I'd like to pretend that the TV series never existed. Cut off the Dera subplot, moe-time scenes and friendship and just keep it simple with a childhood friends love story which was the best idea. This franchise reminded me of Kuragehime a bit, which was done better because there was more growth for the characters and romance even if it was minimal.

I didn't think the TV Series Tamako Market was very successful while watching it, although I never thought they were that bad either. I mean, there were all sorts of quite horrible animes showing in the same season (like Sasami-san @ Ganbaranai, Vivid Red Operation, Oreno Kanojo to Osananajimiga Shuraba Sugiru (or Oreshura) - who remembers them?; Kotoura-san was a series of disappointment after Episode 1). Tamako Market was (re-)watchable and had some quite nice moments although the whole composition as 13-Episode series was sloppy (with a particularly poor ending). It was quite underwhelming for fans who expected another megahit like K-On!

Watching the TV series after the Tamako Love Story movie is quite recommendable.

I'm glad I only watched the movie. To me the movie was perfect and I thought that it was standalone but I found out it had a TV too. I watched the TV for a few episodes and it was really off compared to the movie. So yeah

While Dera got somewhat better as the series went on, he and the humour he brought with him always felt like they belonged on some other show.

For me, I just stopped caring about more and more to the point where I just ignored his character.

Totally agree with you. It's not that I completely hate Dera-chan, but... he's kind of irritating and he just interferes with the story. I don't think he mustn't exist or that he couldn't participate in the TV series, but he should have had a minor role at least. The movie is so much better than the TV series!

In this film, the scenes with Dera, Choi and the Prince did not add anything to the story at all. If those scenes were taken out, nothing would change.

I agree that the original series would have been better without Dera. His character did not fit the setting at all in my opinion. The majority of the characters are cute, friendly and relaxed, but Dera is lazy, a snob and a pervert. He wasn't really amusing at all, either. It felt like he was in the wrong story.

I'm fairly sure that's because they were not part of the movie. It's a 5-minute short and it has its own MAL page.

If you watched the [Coalgirls] version, they just spliced it in at the beginning as a bonus.

yeah, to be honest, I found Dera quite annoying at times during the original series. This movie, with the main focus on Mochizou and Tamako was so much better xD

Wow, so much stupidity throughout this thread. Some coherent thought too.

This is coming from someone who dislikes Dera, but most of the complaints are for the criticism.

I wouldn't go so far as that. I just think it would have been better to give Dera a different role. Like, marinated and broiled on a spit. Or even as mochi stuffing. Anything.

I didn't mind him in the series at all, but the movie is wisely set after the series conclusion (and his departure back to the island). This allows the story to dial in it's sole focus on Mochizou & Tamako for a more serious look at their budding romance. And it pays off in spades in my opinion, as the tonal shift made Tamako Love Story a great movie and a very appropriate bookend to the series, which lacked punch at the ending.
