Finally getting around to this. I've always found Planetes' take on sci-fi to be really intriguing so I'm hoping this is a good one.

Anyway, I love the set up of this episode. I do share what's already been said many times in this thread about the annoyingness of the main character. I find these naive, idealistic and cocky MCs to be the hardest to digest, but I do have faith that her character will be developed accordingly and I'm already enjoying the side characters and the dynamics that were briefly shown between them here.

I watched Space Bros...Then Moonlight Mile and now I'm finally at this one.

The main girl is really annoying with her idealistic expectations of the world. Can she just shut up for a moment? She and the diaper guy argue way too much. Otherwise, the show is pretty interesting so far.

Exactly this, she's like the kid in school who snitches on you if you throw paper in the trash bin.

I wasnt so much annoyed with her, i think it is good pilot epsiode. I like the premise of series. It is very realistic, that in future space debris would make trouble. Actually as 2016, it is already started to make troubles. So, it is good foreshadowing for a manga written in 1999.

I wonder if we can see other departments in future.

My score on first episode: 8.0/10

My god is Tanabe annoying.

Other than that, I found this to be quite an interesting premise to a series.

This department is an absolute mess! The captain of the toy box is my favorite so far. I wasn't all that bothered by Tanabe because the other characters kept pointing out how naive she was. I like the diaper guy but he is kind of an ass, so I would have probably chewed him out for something, too. I mean, who even buys porn magazines in 2075?

Seriously. Especially if you consider that digital processing had only been introduced to standard anime production a few years before. There was also a lot of nice sakuga in this episode.

There was no CG used for the spacecraft, the space suits and all the equipment, which I would have found perfectly acceptable. I know that Production I.G. had already used CG in 2002 for GitS SAC so it's not like the technology hadn't had precedent in anime. It's kind of cool that they went old school in that way.

That was certainly an eventful first day at work! It's sad, but I like how she went to the universe full of hopes and ideals, just to find out that reality wasn't that charming or noble, that even out there she was still "earthbound". I don't know what to expect from this, but the setting is certainly interesting.

It's sad that shows like this went extinct these days. Well, this is rather intriguing. A lot of drama. Interesting episode.

Pretty cool and engaging first episode, to say the least.

Setting, I haven’t seen much Space Sci-Fi shows but they’re usually a hit for me and here’s to hoping this classic will resound to me on that frequency too.

On first glance, the Characters seem quite likeable and their interactions along the lines of ‘meh’ to ‘good’ so sadly nothing hilarious just yet. Soundtracks used were pretty cool too but I didn’t really dig the ED theme. Animation is really clean though, surprising that it’s made in 2003. Poor that female MC too, looks like she’s been through a lot and that certainly isn’t coming to an end just yet. Interesting state of the Company and the ‘Space Debris’ work plus the bleak world, really curious to see how it’ll go from here onwards and and finding out exactly what INTO is. Yikes, got to say that accident to put this issue to light at the start for he episode was quite horrific and unexpected though. Lol @ the mascot though.

On a side note, I’m pretty much watching this because I’m hooked to Vinland Saga and just wanted to have a feel for the author’s past work. Of course, I’ve heard praises of this show for a long time now but that above just proved to be the impetus to actually going for it I suppose. And so far, so good.

Very good job on animation, even if it looks aged. Can't escape the fact that Diaper duo contrast is quite overdone and cliche, but I hope overall it does not fail somewhere down the road.

They managed to make me hate almost every character and feel ambivalent about the rest at best. These walking, annoying cliches were unbearable, especially the shouting cunt. With an opening episode like this I'm wondering what is more preferable, continuing or getting punched in the stomach for 20 minutes...

Got around to watch the first episode for this and man this was rough. Don't get me wrong, it looks awesome, it's clear that there's a lot of work invested in producing this but the dialogue and the characters are trash. One of the most annoying MCs I got the displeasure to watch in my life. Hard dropping this.

About time I gave this another watch, been way too long. I remember really liking Planetes before so this should hopefully be an enjoyable 2nd round.

First episode was a solid introduction to the show, although I have to say Ai Tanabe's idealistic expectations about space and the way she was really aggressive about it when communicating with Hachimaki was annoying not going to lie. I did remember liking her character by the end of the first watch so maybe I'll ease into it again. Regardless of that, the setting and the concept sounds really promising and refreshing too, a debris clearing anime in space does sound unique for a space themed anime that isn't just about the journey to get to space like in Space Brothers or involving a more political theme into the show with tons of action like in Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Gundam shows.

The artwork looks dated, especially the characters, but the animation is pretty stellar, especially seeing the space equipment be used at hand and they captured the atmosphere and beauty of space nicely in the first episode too, even through the obnoxious yelling at times. Hopefully by the time Ai Tanabe and Hachirouta Hoshino get to understand each other more and bond, that whole experience will be even better too.

I really enjoyed this. It’s nice to see a sci-fi anime that explores topics of class and imperialism from the perspective of working class characters, and I hope these topics continue to be explored in future episodes. The protagonist’s naive idealism being tested by the oppressive systems that powers the engine of her society is a very relatable scenario. I second the poster who said this episode was refreshing. It’s rare to see such a grounded and realistic world in a sci-fi anime. The diapers and the propaganda peace plate were great examples of the kind of world-building details that establish this realistic atmosphere. I’m looking forward to seeing where this show goes.

Imma be honest, Tanabe's moralism was awkwardly put. She is in her first mission which she should focus on getting it right and learn from it (as her job), but she decides to discuss what's right or wrong with someone who surely knows what he is doing and knows why he shouldn't question it.
Her inner conflict has potential but I think is kind of impulsive and imature of her for asking this questions to herself just now. Well, that matches the character on paper, but I found this lack of minimal research a bit weird really.

Besides that, pretty interesting start, felt a bit rushed but at same time establishes everything nicely. Character dynamics started to unfold and concepts were presented side by side with very good production values.
It was direct and didn't try to fool our exceptions like it did with Tanabe and I felt it was a confident and solid introduction to her new situation as a way of also characterize her.

For a first episode it had so much moralism in it that I felt like I was at a church revival. Hopefully it will tone down the morals and allow the MC not to be so much of a cartoon 1 dimensional character.

Half section have their heart in the right place; there's nothing wrong with some extra pay, you copy rookie?

Extremely nice first episode. The setting and atmosphere got me hooked instantly. Comedy hits the right spots and the Debris Section seems like a fun bunch as well. This should be a great ride.

in my love to serious sci-fi like space brothers, and after the disappointment at bowboy bebop, this first chapter ignited real good light in me.
loved the MC already, and that diaper boy is interesting too. it's gonna be one of those anime where you get to meet everyone on the team, can't wait for that lol

the fact was little too fast, but considering they wanted to get the focus more on the dispose mission it's understandable, that was amazingly done.

So glad I found this anime. Have been looking for something more realistic and not just what amounts to a cartoon of an RPG with player 1 vs player 2...Space junk is a real problem. And we need commercial incentive for missions to capture it and dispose of it

At one point Tanabe was getting on my nerves but I understand that it is the beginning and it is in a certain way "innocent" mentality

What a gem I just found, I loved the episode

The MC is super annoying, she doesn't even get serious when the EVA starts, yet she notes everybody else got serious. What's worse than her bleeding heart is she's super negligent, she caused the EVA vehicle to flip, catapulting her supervisor. That didn't give her pause even, she just continued to undermine the mission, and spew her guts out. I know her character is going to grow from this point forward, but she's not only super dangerous to herself with her clumsiness and not paying attention, but dangerous to others with her irresponsibility.

Great first episode. I got IT Crowd vibes when Ai takes the elevator to the basement to meet her disorderly and unconventional new colleagues. The setting and (adult!) cast are right up my alley and I look forward to the rest of the show. I'll check out the manga after. I'd far rather enjoy a show and later enjoy the manga more (potentially) than read the manga and turn my nose up at the show as people often do.
