Inconsistent plot and characters, bad character development and overall shitty writing. I don't know why they decided to deviate so much from the source material but it definetely isn't doing them any favors. I actually liked this anime for the first few episodes, but if it keeps going on like this it will definitely end up as the worst anime of the season for me.

Damn, these characters got me so back and forth I dont know who to sympathize with.

I mean it turns out in reality Connie is actually a nice sweet girl and she genuinely wants to have a familial relationship with Ayano and her mom. She sees Ayano as her older sister and wants her to accept her. So I kind of feel bad that she got shit on when trying to be nice.
....buuuuut at the same time, she pretty much brought it on herself because she was such a massive fucking bitch during her introduction. Well, not right away. When she and Ayano met at first they had a good time finding the convenience store, but when it came badminton time though she was a super bitch. And then after she won bragged to Ayano that her mom was also her mama now and that she left to train her.
So yea, I'm not the least bit surprised when the girl you just beat and bragged in her face about how you "stole" her mom isn't too thrilled to hear about you wanting to be a family; even though in reality Connie is a sweetheart who just gave off a bad first impression.

At the same time I cant really fault Ayano for being as cold as she is either. She was being trained by her mom, the fucking GOAT of badminton, and loved it and wanted to be just like her mom. One day a rival girl her age wants to play her, and rather than take her lump and lose because of her cold, said girl levels the playing field by getting Ayano sick as well and beating her. Right after this loss, Ayano's mom leaves literally without so much as a word to go train Connie. No contact, no explanation, nothing. I mean you cant even argue that Uchika wasn't a better mom to Connie than Ayano. She left Ayano when she was still a grade schooler and trained and stayed with Connie until she was a teenager. Just because Ayano had fun playing with her mom as a kid doesn't change the fact that Uchika was a shit mother to her.

So Uchika leaves, and Ayano as a traumatized child thinks its her fault for losing and makes it her sole purpose to win, thinking it will bring her mom back. So she wins and wins like an emotionless robot. Eventually she wises up and realize it wont work and quits, and kind of puts those memories in the back of her mind.

Flash forward, start of high school, Ayano through a series of events gets essentially forced into badminton by her best friend and the badminton team against her will. She's now back in the sport with a reluctant mindset and not so fond memories, and who shows up? The girl who she thinks is the catalyst for her mom leaving her. She beats Ayano again and even brags about the past.

Flash forward again and now Ayano ends up facing off against Connie, having no idea who she is. After this bitchy cocky girl ends up winning, she rubs it in her face that she's the girl who's been with Uchika all this time and is her mama now (since Connie is an orphan i believe).

So yea, I cant really fault the girl for going back to her cold emotionless winning machine side after she was pushed back into a sport and immediately crossed paths with the two girls who from her perspective are directly responsible for ruining her life and taking her mom away. And then I cant fault her for getting pissed when one of those girls wants to be her family after a less than stellar first meeting.

What I really hope is that in next weeks episode Ayano straight up goes cold on her mom too and tells her to fuck off. I'd fucking REEEEEE if her mom just came back into the picture like that and tried to act like its no big deal and Ayano just goes along with it. I think Uchika needs to get shot down and made to realize she's a bad parent and needs a path to redemption before Ayano can be cured of her cold side. Uchika needs to see what her neglect has turned her daughter into.

We got to see the cute version of Ayano... even if it's for a short time.
Of course, she's still in her Oni mode. -_-

Connie wanting to be "family" with Ayano felt weird to me, considering she's the reason why Ayano became like this after what she said to her from that exhibition match with Fredericia.
Even though Connie was defeated by Ayano in their second matchup, it didn't really bother her that much even though she's an international champion. What's on her mind was "being a family" and nothing else which I admire her. Her crying was definitely not from the loss.

I never hated Connie. As of a matter of fact, I really like her right from the start.

We got to see "best mom :v" again in the last scene of this episode and this time I hope she won't disappear again.
How casual can you be to say "Welcome back" to Ayano after leaving her for years. -_-
I wonder how her conversation with Ayano will end up as Ayano recently said that this time she abandoned her mom (which felt ironic since it's her mom that abandoned her and not her :v).
Also, I want to know her reasons for leaving that long!

Hope next episode or 2 we'll get to see the finals match between Ayano and Nagisa. Speaking of Nagisa, it seems that she's overworking herself yet again and might caused some serious injury issues. Still I hope she will win against Ayano (which I'm quite sure she should be ---- for plot and character development), but probably will be her last match coz of that injury. Who knows?

Nagisa with physical issues VS Ayano with psychological issues
Who's gonna win? :P

Connie becomes a completely different character in both actions and motives, last we saw her she was a total different person. Inconsistency is the key word for this show. and I don't even know what to think about Ayano acting all cutesy all of a sudden (just for the 'plot twist' moment).

oh look, the mother who abandoned her child for years without a word comes back with a smile, like nothing happened LOL

Regarding Connie's bizarre attitude change, some speculation: Connie was shown on the phone to Uchika after meeting Ayano. Maybe Uchika told her she had to make Ayano accept her into the family or something. It wouldn't surprise me if Uchika thinks she's done nothing wrong this whole time (obviously she has.)

Personally I think Ayano is a fascinating character. It's really sad that so many viewers say they hate her for how she behaves, when there are a whole series of reasons for all of it that have been shown very clearly all along.

Actually regarding connie's bizarre attitude change, I think it's got more to do with the fact that they changed the a lot of the story element in the anime.

Connie's personality in the manga, during her first introduction and match in the training trip with Ayano, is exactly like the one in this episode.

In the manga, Connie was a bit timid but nice, and Ayano 100% smashed her during their first match and it left Connie heartbroken. That's why she strives to be accepted by Ayano, because she's been rejected ever since her first meeting with her.

I don't know why they decided to make Connie's personality revert back to her manga personality, but it's inconsistent because those events (Connie losing to her and becoming more timid) never happened in the anime.

Yeah the characters are inconsistent as hell but damn I would be lying if I said I'm not having fun when Darth Ayanon comes out, like, for once a sports anime is not a underdog story, she is gonna fuck you up and tell you that you just had no chance without caring about what you feel

That's exactly what I thought about Ayano ! How can you expect something else about her reaction to all she has suffered from in the past ?!

I just can't wait to see Ayano and her mom in the next ep.

She stands alone as a MC in a Sports anime who is edgy and only cares about getting the Win.
People should feel bad for Ayano more then being annoyed with her, it's really everyone else's fault she is the way she is. If you think about it it's true.

Connie all of a Sudden wants to be family? Okay I guess so.

I could really care less about the Romantic interests of the side characters.

The Bitch Mother returns!

In fact I don't see how people can support Ayano's behavior or justify her actions, she's just cold and ruthless with almost no reason to act that way. I really disliked how she decided to just straight out attack Connie with that smash when she thought they were just gonna have a chill game for fun. Just because she has Mommy issues doesn't mean she has to lash out on everyone. If there's someone here who can justify Ayano's actions for me or redeem her character in some way please try.

Okay so she starts High School with no interest at all in playing badminton. She is forcefully pulled back into the badminton scene by the team, her best friend, and the coach. Even though she wanted absolutely nothing to do with badminton anymore she's back in.
Add in to the fact that the Coach tells her that she has Olympic potential....Think about that for a second when you have the potential to be a Medalist in the Olympics, that makes you one of the best Athletes in the WORLD. I would justify that as having a tremendous amount of pressure on you. Ayano only caring about winning and bettering her self makes sense in the fact. Especially when you look at her teammates. None of which are continuing badminton in college and Nagisa's knees basically being broken. Since she is not in doubles competition there really is no need for her to worry about her teammates improving. She a realists and she calls things as she sees them. (Go back to episode 8 when she talks about Nagisa's match)

Then we're introduced to Serigaya who is the catalyst as to why Ayano's mother left her in the first place, thus causing Ayano mental Anguish during her Middle School years. Wanting acknowledgment from her mother in the hopes she would return and to coach her.

Continuing on Ayano starts to open up to her teammates and is having fun playing badminton again. Then enter Connie ANOTHER Catlyst. Who is a BITCH the first time we meet her, and behold she is the person who Ayano's mother left to train and win competitions.

Put yourself in Ayano's shoes. Your parent is the best at their Profession. It doesn't even have to be a Sport. They could be the best Chef, Electrician, Carpenter whatever. You as their child look up to them and not only do what they do but surpass them...and then one day they go...BYE and go and find a DIFFERENT child to mold into their prodigy. Wouldn't YOU be a little pissed off??? The poor girl has severe mental issues and honestly I feel that most people should feel bad for her instead of hating on her.

Ayano stands in a category of her own when it comes to Sports anime. Look at Haikyuu, Yuri on Ice, Kuroko's basketball etc. No other character has had such an unhealthy obsession over winning. You might not like how she turning out character wise by being mean and rude. But (OPINION) she's still freaking awesome and is honestly a breath of fresh air.

I really love this episode. The anime may be not follows the manga. Maybe the director of this wanna try something different, like sport with lot of drama. I can understand why Hanesaki hated his mom and Connie, cause I felt it in my real life (in my story is my dad). Sometime you will be say "I don't need you, leave me alone but in your heart "please don't leave me, I still need you"

Wow, what an episode but c'mon... that's not how it works.
Connie did good in this episode but you can't simply switch from the worst person ever to the best person ever in a blink of an eye, Ayano is now like this because of her lol She appeared out of nowhere saying stuff about her mother and how she is much better than her. Basically provoking her and trying to show that she is better.

I think that Connie never actually thought how Ayano really feels after what her mother did to her and what she's been through since she left her out of nowhere, i think she didn't even think that her mother simply left her...

Honestly, if you wanted the 3 of you to be a family together since the beginning that's how you should have started when you first met Ayano...

Oh and c'mon, you can go f** yourself Ayano's mom, nobody needs you here...
Incredible how a bad mother can ruin her daughters lives...

Honestly I think this anime is bad character wise. First they introduce Hanesaki as a cute girl who wants to have friends etc then... Boom, she become a cold, and unlikable character. I get that she had a terrible past with her mom abandoning her (Karuoko) + she found out that her mom found a substitute, but I really don't think that's a reason to be mean with her teammate or like everyone she plays against. I can't comprehend that. But, Karuoko and Connie too are weird. They are first introduce as vilain like character but you don't think the same after their backstory and after they play Hanesaki. The Connie from several episode ago and the Connie from this ep are like twowo different person. I really think that's why people (or maybe just me idk) care more about the other like Connie than Hanesaki because she acts like a "vilain" now.

Next episode is gonna be very weird with her mom returning for no reason. I'm curious to see if they gonna find some BS reason as to why she left Hanesaki. But again, character aren't consistent in their behaviour in this anime.

IMO it is done pretty well, but yeah not exactly perfectly (I am not a big fan of the "crazy" faces).

Without first showing the nice Ayano, and being "crazy" the whole anime, it couldn't have been shown what exactly provoked her to be this way, she would just be that bullshit thing called yandere or something, but no, she is a quite normal girl, who is well, going through a difficult period of her life.
Yes, not being too nice to her opponents is part of her current (not so healthy) "win at all cost" mentality, and well what can one say, this is a tournament, not daycare.
And opposed to what everyone says I don't think she is particularly mean to her teammates. Yeah, she is in a disagreement with Elena about her playstyle (Ayano kind of has a point: "please Elena, you haven't held a racket in your life, don't tell me how to play") and in episode 8 she analyzes Nagisa's play in a cold but objective way.
Other than this we don't see her being especially mean to anyone, opposed to Nagisa who with her attitude for 3 whole months almost destroyed the club. Ayano's change of heart happened like a couple of weeks ago, and she's not really causing any harm.

Karuoko is well, overly competitive. Connie had a "redemption arc" after the match in episode 5, I guess that's why she's acting quite differently.

And if you ask me it is quite interesting seeing our hero playing the villain (they definately portray it better than in Overlord, which is an anime about exactly this idea).

Hum, objectively speaking, I think I get what you are saying but maybe what's bugging me that much is pace. They changed so quickly, that it felt really unnatural, well that's a 13 ep anime so they can't do anything about it, but maybe if they took more time to develop Hanesaki and maybe Nagisa or Connie instead of focusing on every single character then maybe... Like they want to give story for Hanesaki, Nagisa (with her attitude and how she almost destroyed the club), Connie, Karuoko, maybe her mother next episode, and even her teammate are receiving attention and I don't think you can do that in a 13 ep anime but it's jut my opinion. It's just to much. Quality over quantity.

For the part of her being mean, I don't think that the problem is what she's saying to her teammate but HOW. I mean you can analyse your team's play or how they act but not in a manner that suggest that you honestly don't care and it's just a pain to watch even though everybody honestly care for you and support you from day 1... I play team sport and I know I can get teammate criticizing how I play but I know that's because they care about me, not just for criticizing. That's how I say the scene with Hanesaki talking about Nagisa.

And yes I won't deny the fact that having a hero playing is interesting but if it's from episode one. Not from the middle-end of the show

Honestly, I suggest you read the manga, especially the part where Connie meets Ayano for the first time. It will make much more sense. Also the flashback of when her mother left her. It makes a lot more sense.

I don't know what the director was thinking when he made these decisions, but the inconsistencies were born because the anime decided to go with an original route (turning Connie into a mean bitch) when she was supposed to be a timid and kind girl from the start, but then reverted her personality back in eps 9.

The differences in the manga between Connie and Ayano's meeting are like night and day, which is where all the confusion comes from.

Connie is a complete bitch in the anime, she deserved that delicious revenge Ayanon got on her. In contrast she's still arrogant in the manga but she doesn't take so many physiological shots at Ayanon, she did tease her a little but it wasn't even close to how it was portrayed in the anime. And she didn't completely dominate them either, or win for that matter.

What I don't understand is the mother, sure adopting Connie is great but why stay in another country with her for X years and not go back to your real daughter waiting for you in Japan? Like there's literally no excuse, it's abandonment plain and simple it's entirely her fault Ayano is the way she is so I find it hard to fault Ayano on her current actions. This is a girl going through adolescence so it's completely understandable.

Yeah, it's true, not too much fits into 13 episodes, that's why the anime is quite different, as it has the fraction of the the time the manga has. Although a good anime usually devotes some time to the side characters, and I like that we get to see how some of the others are doing apart from the 2 bigshots.

Yes, I never said her current attitude is any good, and hopefully she'll get over it, but she is not that insufferable bitch as many describes, she hasn't really made any real harm whatsoever (apart from maybe Connie, but whatever was she expecting). I guess though the "crazy faces" have a somewhat big part in it, they are quite overdone, but they are there for the shock factor, and I gotta say they are doing a good job as they are scary AF (still I am not a big fan of them).

If she would play the villain from the very beginning, then she would be the villain :D
Switching in the middle of the anime (and hopefully switching back) is not a thing we see all that often.

Thinking of doing like some other people have already and just watch this series as the comedy it doesn't intend to be but is steadily reaching.

Because honestly this is awful. I'm getting sick of the disconnect I feel for the characters from one episode or one scene to another. Connie being observed in such a benevolent way after having been portrayed as an irredeemable asshole. What has the series done to solidify this transition? Oh, a couple random little sequences of Connie being silly and awkward. WELL, THANKS.

Ayano, I get it. You have a trauma and badminton triggers the psycho button in your back. Why does absolutely nobody care about this except Elena (and yeah, she's not the brightest of the bunch when it comes to dealing with this)? Why is everyone in this fucking show so oblivious to a person needing psychiatric treatment?

The personal issue I have with Ayano's trauma, aside from the lack of response from those around her and the cheesy meme psychopath faces which are getting kind of funny, is its cause. What the hell is Uchika? A mother who leaves her daughter and then hunts for another daughter because that one is good at badminton and her previous one lost a match? Are you kidding me or something? Is this a character? Is this a functional person in any context? I wonder what kind of excuse will this show try to make for the most cartoonish jerk behaviour I've seen in a long while.

The scenes of Ayano, Connie and their friends enjoying themselves are at least kind of likeable, but would work much better if they didn't force a sudden change of perspective in the characters and didn't indulge in routines that require an obvious attachment to character quirks that the series hasn't bothered to properly introduce because being intense and dramatic is all it cared about.

At least the JoJo reference was neat.

Yeah, after this episode, I gotta agree that it's going downhill. I wasn't bothered before, but the whole "let's be a real family" spiel was frustrating and jarring. It came out of nowhere. Connie's change in mindset and personality wouldn't be a problem if this was built up but it wasn't, at all really.

First time, long time here at MAL. Just weighing in because this stupid episode and series is stuck in my mind and I can't friggin' sleep.

I agree with some of the people critical of this episode and perhaps this series. The inconsistency of the characters' portrayal, the lazy way the writers try to redeem Connie as a sympathetic figure through flashbacks and retconning her character (she LITERALLY said to Ayano "If mama doesn't acknowledge you, there's no point in playing badminton, is there?" and then has the gall to want to be a family with Ayano and their mom), these are just a few that drove me up the wall!

I've seen anime with overused/poorly executed tropes, poor acting, bad animation, or even really bad plot holes but nothing derails me more in my enjoyment in any medium is the writers and directors' complete disregard of their cast of characters. They mixed in really bad soap opera plotlines, force fed them into these characters and then force them against their will to act in unnatural ways.

This series is maddening to no end. More power to people who love it, but my God, I just can't...

And having said that, now I need to know what the fuck happens next. If the payoff next week is even mediocre, then I'm really done. Better late than never I suppose.

Gotta hand it to Liden Films though, they got me good -- hook, line and sinker.

I hope Ayano returns her normal self.

So Connie wants to be family with Hanasaki, but it looks like Hansaki ain't gonna let her have any of it, good , co'z I don't like Connie as well and it's good that she got owned in an unofficial match. Man, looks like Nagisa's obsession of beating Hanasaki would her own undoing.....So Hanasaki's bad mom has the nerve to comeback after she abandoned her , I hope that old hag gets some much deserve disrespect from her own daughter.

Does Connie's team really wore this kind of outfit, cu'z it kinda look like a whore with a bad sense of fashion?

The criticism here about the writing here is sadly on point. It's already not that good in the original story but with the forced added drama they drew themselves even more into the corner, trying to get themselves out with unbelievable and too sudden changes of personality.

Already the mother issue is the biggest flaw of the story. We know some parents can leave their children for work for long periods of time in real life but here the way it's shown is just bad because too exaggerated in its presentation.

Despite all that, I still like the anime a lot, probably because of the art, the badminton bits and some characters (Shiwahimeeeeeee, Erena, Kentarou, ...).

Ayano just becomes a better character each week!!!

Here's the thing, Ayano has no reason to play anymore. She was brought back to badminton by the people around her sure but she was not forced, she realizes she still loves the sport and remembers the time she spent having fun. She learns to accept her teammates and have fun. This happens way earlier in like episode 3/4, I don't remember the exact number. In a sense, does that not represent her overcoming her past trauma inflicted by the sport and her mother? She learns that there's more to badminton than just winning and her Mom. She chooses to join the badminton club by herself, not because she was forced but because she realized she loves the sport and wants to continue playing.

Now we fast forward to present episode, she's mentally regressed to some primitive state of obsession with winning, throwing snarky comments towards everyone and acting with an absolutely detestable condescending attitude. I mean that's fine, if she was shown to be like that from the beginning, then it would make sense but that's not how it is. They show her overcoming the very trauma you mentioned only to become inflicted with it again a second later. You call Serigaya and Connie catalysts but as someone who's supposedly overcome her issues, why do they have to turn her into a cold-blooded monster after she's realized that she has people she can count on?

Alright fine, we have the new or rather old redefined cold monster that is Ayano but here's what I don't get about her. What reason does she have to play badminton? She has nothing to prove to anyone, she's rejected her Mom and everyone around her, she gives no shit, she takes no shit, she does not care about her teammates. Why then is she obsessed with winning if she has no reason to even play badminton, let alone win? She can just quit like she did initially cause she gains nothing but pain from playing. There's no reason for her to play, you mentioned Olympics but from what I see, Ayano does not care about things like that. If you're angry at your Mom, you can be angry, there's still no reason for you to snap at everyone and throw around all these demeaning insults. My biggest problem is not that she acts this way but that she was 'changed' to act this way, her character feels inconsistent. It feels like she was changed to be cold, savage and OP because of entertainment value not because she has a compelling reason to act that way. I dislike her character mostly because I don't understand her, I can't see the reasoning behind why she acts the way she is. You call her unique and I can see why you like her but her character just feels inconsistent to me, maybe it's the anime's fault, I don't know.

Great episode.

The little outing was super cute and fun to watch, I love the cosplay bits and Connie with the Chinese attire is so much win. <3

You know what, people have been hating on Connie ever since her introduction but I don't really see any grounds for that anymore. She just has trouble expressing herself and all she wants is to have Ayano acknowledge her as a sister. I'm with Riko and Elena, she's surprisingly really cute and I loved the little scenes from her past. I'm far more attached to Connie as a character than Ayano now, if they probably play again I'm definitely rooting for Connie.

In fact I don't see how people can support Ayano's behavior or justify her actions, she's just cold and ruthless with almost no reason to act that way. I really disliked how she decided to just straight out attack Connie with that smash when she thought they were just gonna have a chill game for fun. The part where the team members welcome Connie back and she starts to cry was really sad. T.T

That ending though, Ayano must be horrified. xD

They're introducing characters incorrectly imo that's why people hate Connie and still root for Ayano. As for justifying her behavior, you can. Ayano loved her mom and watched her play badminton growing up even going so far as to pick up the sport herself because she loved it and it made her feel closer to her mom. Then one day, without explanation or at least one we know of yet, her mom just up and disappeared. For an elementary school child that is a scarring and mind altering event. Then years later after what we can only assume is zero contact between the two shes sees her mother on the cover of a sports magazine with some other young lady who is being called her daughter, and to top it off she also plays badminton. So in Ayano's mind not only has she been abandoned she' s been replaced as well. Then, as icing on the shit cake this same girl shows up in Japan and essentially taunts Ayano in their very first meeting with the hair ribbon and calling Uchika her "mama" and saying "if mama doesnt acknowledge you then theres no point in playing badminton". Now Connie doesn't know Ayano's situation and Ayano has no way of knowing Connie's back story at this time so there's no reason she'd feel any sympathy toward her or even know the level of despair she just brought back to the forefront of Ayno's mind. Its a shitty situation but Ayano's behavior is completely justified given the facts and the information known. Long story short Uchika is a shitty parent and has caused all this drama with her unnecessary bullshit. Sorry for the essay If anyone wants to dispute this rant feel free.

I have heard that they changed up a lot of stuff regarding the character introductions so I might read the manga to see if that makes me change my mind regarding some things.
Ayano's behavior or rather reaction is just far too extreme in my opinion for reasons I've stated above.

Ouch! Feel sad for Connie, Ayono really rekt her so hard! Ayono for sure have her reasons to behave like that, althought i guess that Connie and other adversarys dont deserve to be treated so bad and anti desportively!

Only our mother have the blame of what she did, and what Ayano suffered!

And i expected something like that from Ayano! Was awesome see the true Ayano before the badmiton game!

Next episode we will see her mother!
