A whole filler episode made just to prove the point that Riko and Reg just got there because of each other, if that wasn't obvious enough before.
And for that, they made Reg do something stupid (shooting the Incinerator) and Riko do something even more stupid (going out just because she was hungry).
The only good part of the filler was to see how the third-layer curse acts, since that wasn't in the manga.
Otherwise, pretty meh. Come on, we could've had seen Nanachi at this point.

I liked the series so far but annoyed at how careless Riko still is at this point. She almost died twice and Reg saves her both times and she still doesn't seem to understand how dangerous it is to wander off away from him.

even with one hour special in the final episode there is no way to get there?

yes, now with episode 9 ended, they covered around 18 chapters... so its around 20 more chapters to chapter 38.. 6 episodes worth of time(because ep 13 is 1 hour long) probably wont enough to contain them imo... so probably they will end it before encounter with bondred

agreed, i'm really eager to see nanachi, but showing how the curse works was pretty great cause the manga just skim over 3rd layer

Not a chance. They'd need to cover nearly 3 volumes in 4+1 episodes when in 9 they've only covered a little more than 2.

I really loved this episode! The additional scenes that were included were interesting and this layer was explored well compared to the manga. Loved seeing Riko have a purpose and finding her way with Reg being unconscious. Good action too! 4th layer and 1hr special hype!

I knew the Black Bullet director was a bad sign, what a shame.

Lol, the "filler" was what the author wanted to do in the manga, but couldn't because he was rushed. And no, the manga can get rushed quite a bit, if anything.

Stop assuming.

I found this episode pretty weak. Its was all very predictable. That's was like a tabletop RPG adventure when a bad master want to screw over a player and make him obligatorily follow a linear path with a sequence of pre-made challenges and puzzles with only one solution each, and all his abilities and skills get nerfed. 3/5 for this episode.

Good episode.

That's not accurate. They weren't safe if they had to run away from danger.

Ouzen says that'd happen in case Reg faints and lets Riko there by herself.

Not all species of creatures hunt the same way. It's fair.

What'd I complain about is some 12-YO girl lifting someone weighing more than her. I did some research and I was surprised at some comments in some sites, of boys around 13-YO saying that they could lift around 100 lb. But this site I found is more informative: http://strengthlevel.com/strength-standards/female/kg There it says that a novice-level female weight lifter, weighing about 40 kg, could only lift about 16 kg. I suppose Riko would be just that. So yeah. xD So you see, the mostly-untrained girl being able to lift that boy--who's even metal parts in his body, is pretty much false.
She should've instead struggled pulling him...all the way. But yeah, logically the producers didn't think that'd be enjoyable for most viewers to see.

Why would you show that scene with Maruruk again? Goddamnit, I'm crying again. ;-; It hurts so much. I'm not okaaay!

I swear this journey would be so impossible without Regu's abilities. He's been making their journey a piece of cake with his extending arms; I can imagine the rest of the cave raiders having a hard time descending to the depths of the abyss, and hurting themselves, and barely surviving.

Nice seeing their friends again at Orth. Ugh. It gives me hope that this show somehow is light and not that dark. Hehe.

Ugh. The creatures we've been discovering are getting more interesting. Now we get to see those cute hamster-like creatures. I forgot what those "little guys" called, I maybe wrong, but are they called neritantan? Heck, I want 10 of those. They're so cuuuute! The Madokajack looks like a sting-ray. Haha! Then we met another creature, the Crimson Splitjaw. Damn them names are so cool. That Amakagame! Hahahaha. It looks like balls. Jeez. I need to stop! Hahaha!

I knew Riko can do it. You're strong, baby. I was so worried when Regu fell asleep again. Gaaaah. So proud of Riko this episode. <3

Gaaah. That was fast! They're already in the Fourth Layer next episode. Those Goblets of Giants look so cool, but I know they're dangerous.

SO FUCKING GOOD EPISODE. IT'S SO GREAAAT! I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE ARE 3 EPISODES LEFT. I NEED MORE! WAAAH. I DON'T WANT TO WAIT ANOTHER YEAR FOR THE 2ND SEASON. KAMI-SAMA, GRANT US OVAs! GIVE US THE 2ND SEASON, ONEGAISHIMASU! <3

1. She doesn't lift reg, she pulls him and pulling is way easier than lifting
2. It's mentioned that although he has metal parts, reg is surprisingly light so maybe he's light enough to be carried that way. After all, she already carried him all the way from like 100m or 200m in the first layer with nat in episode 1

She did lift him. She lifted him onto her back then ran away from those bunny-like critters. But I had forgot that after that, she had been pulling him in that small passage. Then after that she does lift him again onto her back as she thought it to be easier for that upwards path. For 2 hours. So it's quite a stretch, eh.

The way you put it makes it sound like they thought he'd be heavier than a kid that age, but was instead of the same weight. And don't wish for him to be lighter as it'd make his strikes weaker (like in the part near the end where he strikes that creature--imagine that it'd have a lesser effect--or at least supposed to.) (Besides other disadvantages--like being easily blown away by strong wind, strikes.)

Riko's fucking dumb. Why the curious brat can't rest and be patient till Reg's up again? It could've been lot worse if the creature that swallowed them turned out to be more terrifying. She not only risked her own life but dragged Reg into danger too. Doesn't matter if this little adventure proved some sort of realization for her or not. I can't enjoy it at the cost of her foolish actions.

Made in Abyss is a story about a boy with superpowers, named Reg, who is on babysitting duty and who, after a while of the toddler Riko's nagging, has no choice but to accept her wishes of going out for a stroll within the deepest level of Abyss.

Riko really hurt her head near-after when she was born so she hasn't grown a brain yet; so it is up to Reg to save her from every terror she runs smiling towards to. Even if the level of terrors seem to grow more horrifying further and further along the levels of the Abyss.

Good luck Reg! We believe in you!

Another episode of essentially nothing happening.

At least there was some action this time, and we got to see some of the creatures that inhabit the Abyss.

I really don't understand the fans of this show. They're constantly saying "wait until next episode when"....

And then literally nothing interesting or exciting happens.

This show is very overrated, in my opinion.

And...DROPPED. The most overrated show of the season, was promising at the very start, but it never got anywhere and probably NEVER WILL, mostly filler and boring talk and flashback all the time, at the top of that very annoying lead who still saves the day. Nice child story.

PS: I can see why this really unpopular in Japan, the pacing god awful and reminds of thousand year olds shounens where took 10 episode to happen anything at all. HORRIBLE WASTE OF TIME

Riko is lucky she didn't die. They both knew Reg was gonna be out for 2 hours and that the Abyss is very unforgiving. Like, she said she was starving but you aren't gonna starve in 2 hours, girl! Really disappointing, tbh, though at least she now knows that she really is depending on Reg to survive, and vice versa.

My thoughts exactly....She did a lot of dumb things in this episode

Well, she is 12 and I was expecting her to do exactly that. She is sooo impulsive since episode 1 no matter the person who tries to stop her from doing something she has in mind (Leader, her friends, Reg, etc.)

And well... yeah, she is also a "walking corpse" who wants to reach the bottom of the abyss (unconsciously or not).

Anyways, I felt the same as you two. Tbh, I was really nervious all the time while Reg was unconscious.

Great episode but i think Riko was just stupid.
Reg told her to wait for him, and she thought that dragging him in holes alone would be a great idea. I think her goal is not to reach the bottom of the Abyss but yes to kill Reg xD
But for real now, great episode! Can't wait to see more mysteries from the abyss.

@Jazoraa

It also bothered me that at the beginning she became hungry; why didn't they bring rations? (It's like they don't even make them, which is... yeah.) ... And it appears that they wanted to showcase...both her perseverance and foolishness; in making the decision to disobey Reg--try finding food but not succeed--then while suffering from hunger (and the curse), still carry Reg all the way.

The world building/environment of this episode is absolutely amazing! and the deeper it gets the more interesting and more foreign alien-like stuff and visuals keeps on surprising us!
Those extra large hamsters are cute!
Reg fired it again! that 2 hours is practically short! lolz
Riko hallucinated! one of the side-effects of going-up instead down...
Reg woke-up at the very exact moment! And that pickax is actually powerful if Reg is the one to use it!
The two are rapidly getting deeper: The Depth's Fourth Layer "Goblet of Giants"
5/5.

So far we've seen how useful Reg is, and how he makes up for their lack of experience. I suppose usually people would build experience with the previous layers, but we start to see even that experience might not be enough when you face a completely 90 degree cliff face to scale down. Normal people might plan an overcome this with the right equipment, but it is clear that in some cases there is no substituting Reg's arm hooks. How do others do it? Do they chance upon relics which they keep for themselves, which help overcome these impossible challenges?

Earlier it was mentioned that people become less human as they make their way down, and we see how Ozen augments herself with relics. I wonder how long can Riko last without doing the same, in order to keep up with Reg and not be a burden (Which I think is the reason why she decided to move when Reg told her to stay put, a chance to prove herself)

Every single episode after 5 or 6 has just been 20 minutes of me shouting at the screen for them to "GO DO THINGS". The progression has slowed to a grinding halt and I no longer care if either Riko or Reg die, in fact I want both to because at least they could start over. I loved the first three episodes but man this show sucks now. I don't care about Markula (sp?) saying goodbye, y'all were there for a little over ten days. Fuck you, you don't get to be THAT attached to anyone. Screw this show, I hate it for wasting time after episode three.
