Mm, a better episode this week imo. The action was on point especially in the second half and Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki impresed me with his fighting tactics.

Kinda expected ufotable to pour in their budget for the battle scenes so I got the joy of watching that. Hell, I think they even captured the characters emotions right this week.

Good episode. Nice action.

Using the ship's cannon to bombard the meeting place was a good idea. Fortunately, Yagen was there to stop.

Yagen got injured and I though he was going to die but a new character (Tsurumaru) made it in time.

Best episode in the series so far. Pacing was good and it didn't feel dragged out or pointless. Characters felt like themselves ( they even showed the dorky side of izuminokami I love it ) there was one joke I laughed at ( the one where konnosuke bragged about having everything on hand and then horikawa and mutsu start roasting him ) - thought it was really funny lol Tsurumaru had a cool reveal at the end. I know yagen isn't going to die but I did flip at him getting injured. Really exciting. Its like the formula from the previous episodes ( something happening then nothing happening then something happening ) done right. Imglad they skipped to the next mission instead of showing the 3 day vacation.

I'm really glad Tsurumaru got revealed this episode. Not only is he my second favorite character, but it means Mikazuki Munechika is next. Maybe they'll take Yagen back to the citadel to get him treated and we'll see Mikazuki there? Who knows but I'm anxious lol good episode overall. No real complaints outside of me not liking izuminokamis voice ( personal thing ) and me not believing Yagen killed all those historical revisionists back at the meeting place. But that's it. Good work ufotable. Keep it up.

Not a bad episode. The action was cool, as always. Nice twist with the Retrograde Army wanting to use the cannons instead of attacking directly.

Still waiting for some kind of story outside of "go here and stop the Retrograde Army".

I think they're following the game very closely with that because that's mostly what the game is. " Go here- stop retrograde army " lo! Not much of a plot outside of that

Ah, I see. I never played the game, so I don't know anything about it. Well, hopefully they're just setting up the world and characters for now. I'd like to see a more developed story in the future!

The action was cool. That ootachi is strong. It can take on all four of them. Yagen was able to stop the attack but he got injured and is surrounded. Tsurumaru saved him in time.

There Is a bit more to the game like the recollections for the characters where they talk about conflicts, the training, forging, kiwames where the characters go on a journey of self discovery and come back stronger ( I don't think that'll be in the anime though since kiwames were implemented into the game so late while the anime was being made ) and etc. I dunno how much of that will appear in the anime but we'll see.

I haven't actually played tkrb in a while but were tsurumarus stats really that bad? Haha, ufotable even says on his profile that he's proficient in battle so I don't really think they care if his stats in game are bad- just like they don't care that a wakizashi and a tantou going up against a tachi/katana ( multiple of them ) really wouldn't work IRL and only works here because ufotable/tkrb game logic

Just felt like saying that, as someone who has only seen Hanamaru without playing the game (?) or knowing anything about the franchise beforehand, Katsugeki is pretty enjoyable so far.
I'm generally a fan of cute guys doing things in anime, and Hanamaru delivered on that plus some good action scenes, but I think the focus Katsugeki has on plot and action instead of SoL is also nice. We get the same characters with the same VAs from Hanamaru, but this time in an action series by ufotable. Pretty cool to see. Do we know if Katsugeki is just going to focus on the 6 - 7 swordboys listed in the character section and show in the OP, or if we'll see some of the other ones at some point?

There are 6 more sword boys coming. You see them in the op- Mikazuki Munechika who was the swordman in blue standing in the night landscape and the silhouettes behind him that were his team ( Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, Oodenta Mitsuyo * He wasn't in Hanamaru but he was in the game*, Honebami Toushirou, Higekiri and Hizamaru *These two also weren't inHanamaru but they're in the game ) they're presumably unit 1 and will be appearing later on in the series. So all together if you include the saniwa and konnosuke that's 14 characters. 6 sword boys per team. Unfortunately that probably means more sword boys outside of the confirmed ones likely won't be appearing until season 2 if it ends up getting one but I think confining the swords to 2 units instead of putting all 60 + swords in the anime ( like Hanamaru is doing ) will make it easier to flesh them all out individually.

Yeah, the character listings for the anime's entry on MAL already shows Mikazuki Munechika but I wasn't aware of the others. I liked him in Hanamaru because I'm a fan of Toriumi Kousuke in general. Nice to see Yamanbagiri will be in this, I liked him in Hanamaru as well. But it'll be interesting to see brand new characters (for me, at least) for the ones that weren't in the last anime.

PS
I can guess just going by your username and your pic that you're a big fan of Mikazuki then

I think its interesting that they're putting Oodenta Mitsuyo in the anime 1) because he's a tenka goken ( one of the 5 great swords of Japan ) like Mikazuki and 2) because he was implemented so late in Touken Ranbu ( the middle of last year I believe ) that its surprising that he even made it in. Juzumaru Tsunetsugu ( another tenka goken ) was implemented months before Oodenta so it really shocked the fandom that Oodenta got picked instead haha I wonder why. He's a cool character though I think Juzumaru will be in Hanamaru season 2 so that makes up for it

My rambling aside YEAAH I don't hide that I'm a huge fangirl of mikazuki munechika well. He's my favorite Touken Danshi and the reason why I started to play in the first place. Waiting for him to appear in Katsugeki. Tsurumaru is here so that means Mikazuki is coming next. Im betting he'll debut in episode 6 but we'll see.

It wasn't looking good there for a while though, that Ootachi was very strong.

Thankfully Tsurumaru has shown up at the end to help out.

^Same, They've had one slot left and given how at the end of the first episode, 3 toudan were summoned, the 6th should be summoned as well at a time of need. (Still doesn't make sense though since in the game if you start with 2 swords you stay with 2 swords on the map, and doing that on map 6 is suicide anyways but wtv)

Honestly I didn't understand Tsurumaru's popularity at first, especially his clothing design, but he did grow on me due to his meme-ish portrayal within the fandom. That and Saito Soma <3 Happy to finally see him in the anime, he looked pretty badass with his entrance, bad stats or not, lol. Really happy to hear his "surprised to see me?" line as well.

Also yay for Yagen getting spotlight in this episode :)

Finally wathed this anime after 4 weeks, watched 4 eps in a row. I knew from the start its gonna be really bad (6.96 for ufotable anime?) I know that pretty much every time there is an anime with superb visuals and sound which is rated low almost always insanely bad in terms of story. And damn i was right. Thats gotta be one of the worst animes this season, i watched 4 episodes and i can hardly recall what happened. Nothing memorable or interesting happened in those episodes.
Im not a sucker for great visuals and i hate historic animes especially ones that look like they are done for fujiyoshis. So maybe thats why i have a very bad experience with the anime, but i really think that the story is quite horrendous and there is nothing literally nothing happening except some visually good fights.
Btw i really hope they explained the anime better.

This episode ups the ante in terms of action and dramatic tension. I'm interested in how will Kunihiro and Tonbokiri hold off an ootachi, at the same time the others scramble to protect the meeting. To be honest, I wasn't expecting Tsurumaru to appear at this point, lest the episode would end on a cliffhanger at Yagen's expense. Oh well, onto next week!

Yeah I agree this isn't really a historical anime as it doesn't always accurately depict the things happening during that time ( considering all the changes being made by ufotable and the historical revisionists within the show ) more like a fantasy anime with historical elements where liberties are being taken.

This anime took place in the past with real historical event. Nobunaga no Chef and Jin also has time travel element and they were seen as a historical manga. I guess this anime can be called historical fantasy like Hakuoki or Mononoke. And I already watched Onihei. Thank you.

Drifters was still a historical fantasy though. And so is touken ranbu- this anime is more historical fiction than anything - as most of the things happening in this anime ( the way they're happening ) did in fact not happen in real life and are simply based around historical events before changes were made for the plot. Its historical fiction. And that's all I wanna say. Not trying to start a debate. It just is what it is.

I was wondering if normal people can see the space-time distortions but I honestly doubt that, otherwise there would be panic every time.

That giant demon, can the two of them really do it and hold him back?

That was too close for Yagen, thankfully new guy arrived in time.

Oh man, the fight scenes are so good. This show just keeps getting better and better.
I'm actually starting to believe that the reason it has only 6.91 as a score is because quite a few people of those who haven't seen Hanamaru are watching Katsugeki, and they don't really know what's going on or find it boring. But this is so much better than Hanamaru...

Yagen, you are a hero. You gave it your all, you are amazing.
Also I had a feeling Tsurumaru would come. It was epic :')

Another thing; for some reason Izuminokami's voice doesn't sit very well with me. I don't think it fits his appearance. I can imagine him having a more "noble" voice, firm and gentle at the same time. Hearing him speak with a rough and more casual tone seems strange...

Another thing; for some reason Izuminokami's voice doesn't sit very well with me. I don't think it fits his appearance. I can imagine him having a more "noble" voice, firm and gentle at the same time. Hearing him speak with a rough and more casual tone seems strange...

It's actually how he talks in the game. Though....he's actually much more calmer and more with it in this than the game itself.

The action was great.

New character at the end seems like a pretty cool guy.

His game stats suck, but Crane Troll's a pretty cool dude XD
