Kumiko and Shuuishi have no chemistry whatsoever, what sort of fate are you talking about? Shuuichi seems happy to see her but I am yet to see any sort of positive reaction on her part. Unless there is some sort of proper development, this pairing will be a massive fail if it ever happens.

You don't just hook up people together cause they are cute, they need actual chemistry in a show. It's not fanfiction. If not a whole "childhood friend" factor, they would be nothing more than strangers going by their limited, short interactions.

Back in Tamako Market, Tamako and Mochizou had an actual chemistry, things in common and genuinely enjoying being around each other. They were not just script written to be childhood friends, they actually interacted as ones what made sense to have them together.

Kumiko and Shuuichi have non of it.

Whoa, why are they acting like it's the end of the world? It's just Aoi leaving because she have to focus on her exam to get into a good college so that she can have a future she desired. I mean, it's not like they made a promise or whatnot, she was clearly against it since the very beginning.

This series hasn't been very good since the festival (ep.5). I couldn't finish the episode without taking a break off it for a few times.

Came to post this. Hopefully the show is a bit more choosy with what it dramatizes. Not bad but a little too emotive. Just see your friend off with a smile. She has totally understandable reasons for leaving.

-Just noticed Kumiko's the only one with an instrument in the top row of the OP endcard
-Taki putting Aoi on full blast was pretty uncomfortable to watch

...and those were the only things in this episode that elicited enough of a response from me to be noted down. In the episode it's explained more what made the previous Kitauji band so dysfunctional that the second years quit, but they already established that in a previous episode. The episode also explored Haruka's imposter syndrome associated with being president of the band, but that subplot didn't particularly hold my attention. Also, like the dissent in the band from the year before, Haruka's imposter syndrome was also alluded to in a previous episode (the 5th one, IIRC). However, this episode didn't really do much to expand upon the previously-introduced plot threads (aside from Aoi quitting). Because of this, most of the episode was pretty much empty space, which left me pretty disappointed.

I felt like the show expected me to care about Aoi without giving me any real reason to. That and the whole 'people leaving last year' backstory have been giving me a big "okay, but so what?" feeling for a while now. This series would be so much better without all the boring drama that involves the side characters; it's been limping since SunFes.

The drama is running on so many different threads it's kind of hard to keep up with it all. It was such a melancholic episode, that the funniest moment came from Reina, of all people, on the train. On one hand, we got a lot of answers. First, regarding the fall out from last year, its consequences that Haruka and Kaori have had to deal with, and the pressure that has been building up on Haruka. Aoi's departure was signaled in the previous episode, as was Hazuki's interest in Shuuichi.

On the other hand, we have still some mysteries left. Is Yuuko's admiration for Kaori real, or does she have a hidden agenda? And what is Asuka's deal, really? Is she just a pragmatic person who has full control over her emotions, or is there more to the story, as Shuuichi suggested? And finally, what happened to Kumiko in middle school?

This show is like a Netflix drama, so addictive. The fact that most episodes end on a mini-cliffhanger further compounds this effect. It may be part slice of life, but episodic it is not.

My favourite episode so far.

You can't make a good anime about a school concert band without tackling the struggles of the players outside band commitments. They portrayed Aoi's dilemma perfectly which was why I loved this episode so much.

All the build up through the subtle hints about what happened the previous year alongside Aoi's distanced personality led to that incredibly intense scene with Aoi quitting. Giving us Aoi's pov where she stared down at her instrument was genius level directing, I was absorbed by the atmosphere to the point where I actually became dizzy.

This was a gloomier episode than what we’re used to.

Aoi decided to leave the band so she can focus on college entrance exams more. This of course made everyone pretty sad but I don’t think her heart was that into it anyway.

And as I figured, Hazuki has a thing for shuichi. That’s probably not gonna go well.

Plethora of Drama this episode!

Aoi’s Sudden Leave, President-san’s Insecurities and finally Hazuki’s Blooming Love - All three have been obvious for a while now but I certainly didn’t think we’d get all of these compiled for a single episode! Even more is that we got a more intensive insight on the mysterious previous year, things have sure changed. I’m really curious about Kumiko’s reaction to ‘tuning out’ bit though, did she go through a similar experience in the past and this being the reason of making her want to restart?

But, that aside, it was an eventful episode as a whole with good elements of Comedy, xD @ that awkward scene between Kumiko, her childhood friend and Kousaka-san in the train there, and Stunning Animation throughout! Seriously, this show is just so beautiful already but when KyoAni tries to spice it up a bit, it gets Gorgeous just like this!

Starting to really dig in the ED and Op now too! Visuals-wise, I was captivated from the start but not so much for the music but it’s a different story now.

I can understand Aoi for leaving, guess she sees her future not in the music business so she wants to focus on school. That last scene though, loved Kumiko's response xD

Maybe there was a lesser mixture of events that happened but those few things that were seen during the episode were interesting, because we understand the contingent situation, the events that led to it and the effects that had on characters and their choices following past events. The narrative with the twist in the final part, closes the circle and this has significant repercussions on the plot. But the narration is not limited to this alone, giving other mysteries that make the future vision of this anime even more engaging. Excellent drawings, animations, backgrounds and the construction of the characters on a psychological level. The character of Yoshikawa Yuuko, after that of Natsuki, begins to make his way more and more into the narrative, and this can only make it more interesting.

I'm glad Aoi abandoned the club, since episode 1 it has been shown that she only wanted to expend a good time on the club and the current atmosphere isn't the appropriate for it.

Taki-sensei once again shows that he isn't made to be a classroom teacher.

I don't like Shuichi and Hazuki together tbh, although Kumiko very likely doesn't like hin, I'd definitely prefer them together.

I like how relatable all the characters are. I've been following acting classes for 4 years until I realised it became something that didn't fit what I wanted anymore, so I definitely understand Aoi here. However I feel like the drama surrounding her was a bit too forced given that she's never been shown as being that important.
But well. I find it interesting that someone finally aknowledged how Asuka's perfection is a bit suspicious and makes you wonder if it truly is her personality or if she's putting on a mask. Now I wonder who she really is beyond that mask.

Bit sad that Aoi isn't going to participate anymore (expected considering she didn't choose for the nationals and didn't really care for the concert band anyway) but also mature decision of her to quit the club in order to pursue her studies instead of messing both up. Hazuki really has the hots there Shuuchi seeing that question to Kumiko at the end.

Quite the heavier episode. Was thinking it was too overly dramatic for my taste, it’s just a concert band, no need to cry over anything here. This will probably resonate and hit home harder for those watching who have actually been in bands and understand the unity needed to play together. Then again, Whiplash was nowhere near lacking in intensity and drama. Actually you know what scratch that, even though the cloudy skies were in play, they actually kept the drama relatively toned down and realistic now that I think about it. I’m glad it’s not over the top, but still hints of sadness or even pain from aoi leaving and also the struggles of the president. And yeah nice way to end the episode, before starting this I didn’t think we were going to go anywhere near anything romance related lol

Well Aoi has left the concert band as she had to focus on her entrance exam, a perfectly valid reason.

Taki-sensei can be a cool customer but he can be cold as well sometimes. I wonder how these advisors and other professionals in such type of music recognise the problems in the certain sections of the segments.

Also I'm 100% sure that Hazuki x Shuichi ain't gon'happen.

Ah drama, we welcome you!

I'm not sure why the club members were so shocked when Aoi left, I mean she was the only one who raised her hand in the favour of NOT aiming for nationals back then, so her leaving the band was kind of inevitable somewhere down the line.

Also I was expecting Hazuki to ask what she did towards the end sometime, but not now of all times lol. So please no love drama, please.

What a serious, high-stakes episode! I loved getting to know the story of what happened last year. Aoi's desire for the club to be about making good memories and not the competition suddenly made a lot more sense. Getting to know the president more in depth was nice as well, she's a really sympathetic character.

Love that the tension got somewhat resolved in the second part. The ending was too funny!

Wow this was pretty damn good. I am totally loving how realistic it is, like how Aoi quit for real. There was no, "I realized I was wrong." No, she was headstrong and she told everyone that she wants to quit. Applause.

Need I say Natsuki is perfection? She reminds me of Iwasawa from Angel Beats.

Exactly. I thought there was something off with Asuka from the first episode (as a result I thought she was a bit overrated here on MAL) She's definitely putting up a front, and faking some of it. So glad it was really like that, now she will have some good character development, and deserve the popularity she has.

And I am hoping for Kumiko and Shuichi. Their moments are great and I love the chemistry between them. Think they could end up a good couple. . And please, there's a fine line between refreshing, good cliche, bad cliche and plain horrible, this pairing is a mixture of the first two. Hazuki's love seems more like a first crush type, something which will help her grow into a better person. Plus I'm not really feeling her moments with Shuichi. Of-course that's just my opinion.

One of the best episodes of this anime for sure.
@TragicRomance +1 On all this.

I too think Kumiko-Shuichi is more likely than Hazuki. More because Shuichi doesn't strike me as the sort of guy who would He seems like the kind of guy who likes a challenge. Hazuki is a lot of things, challenging is not one of them!

Tbh though I still think Kumiko and Kousaka will be stuck in the land of eternal yuribait. All those lingering glances, beauty shots and worrying about what she thinks. No way is she not at least a little bit gay :p

I would have quit too. Not worth all that drama.

sbyrstall said:

Now, as for people saying Taki-sensei is harsh. Excepting for the fly being open (I'm hoping it was a joke), he's doing the same thing that other band instructors have done. They would work individual sections and/or individual. They would comment on the playing. Some of the conversation with Aoi should have been in private (like why she wasn't practicing/cram school). He should have just asked to see her after class.

To me, he comes across as smug. His expression seems so condescending. Even if his teaching styles are great, just the way he carries himself annoys me. lol.
@Gar_Logan

I agree so much! I can easily see why Aoi said fuck this bullshit. The drama, the smug teacher, the glum atmosphere. It was nice to see Taki upset that he'd pushed someone too hard though. He's not a bad guy really.

I'm currently dealing with a buttload of club drama at work. It's truly brilliant how realistic this show is with the factions, the complex relationships, the "noodle incident", the unwilling president of circumstance. Someone on the staff has lived this.

10/10 so far.
