Perfect, just perfect conclusion. I actually thought they claimed Yuki's life for a moment there... that would be way too sad, but it was very well done.

Incredible last 2 episodes for a very satisfying ending.

What to say? A lot of things happened in this episode. Too many to make a quick opinion about it. I expected a bit different ending, but I like being surprised. Nice ending of great series

Excellent ending to great series, albeit I guess I felt a bit like Yuki's surviving was a copout...

I beg to differ, gentlemen. Although a great series (it's a 9 in my humble opinion), this was an awful episode. Come on, there were at least 3 WTF moments:
1)How the hell did Desler had a warp device in that piece of sh*t? Why the hell didn't he attempt to shoot the Yamato down in 121 days? And how did the fuel last for so long?
2)Why did Sanada keep such an amazing weapon in secret until the last moment? Why didn't he tell anyone?
3)Yuki's resurrection. At least they could have explained it or something.
Anyway, I'm happy Kodai and Yuki ended up together

I wasn't that impressed with the ending. Towards the end of the series in general there was an increasing amount of miraculous saves, the crew of Yamato getting into situations from which they couldn't escape. Also, at the end we saw first Earth having no oceans or plant life, completely barren, and then after the radioactive purifier had been used it was all blue and green again. Where had they hidden all the water and vegetation? Oh well. I suppose with a series like this you shouldn't expect that much logic. All in all the first half of the series was better.

I actually thought for a moment Yuki was dead, glad she wasn't, I thought it was very good so 8 / 10, liked Captain Harlock more but I'm looking forward to the next season of Yamato.

Even though I like Yuki It would've been stronger if she died after she saved the day, besides that didn't really make much sense. but I guess they didn't want to leave the audience with a broken heart so it's understandable, I guess.
I didn't like that this series focused too much on action when it had plenty of time for character development, but overall this was a pretty good series for it's time. 7/10

This really takes me back.....I used to watch this when I was a kid. In my opinion, it is still a classic and this and Gaiking were my introduction into Japanese anime. Actually my first time watching it from beginning to end, when I was young it was more like catch an episode here and there. I give this a 9/10, yes the anime is leagues better now and the plot of course has holes in it, but one must consider the era this came out in. The Japanese version originally aired in 1974 the year I was born, and the American adaption (the one I am familiar with) did not start airing until 1979. For an anime that is now almost 40 years old one has to admit that it was and still is pretty epic!

The ep has a couple of WTF moments but is still a good end to a great classic. The captain's death was an extremely poignant moment.

Without Yamato there would have been no Macross or Gundam. It's a true classic. May it long be remembered.

While I really liked the series for it's neat character and mechanical designs, as well as its well-made animation, I was really disappointed by it's conclusion. Everything was great up until this episode, and then they go and toss two ridiculous deus ex machinas at us, and expect us to be content.

I give the show a 6/10, which is, my book, not a bad rating.

Pretty much this, except it started for me during the "final" battle with Dessler in ep 24.

I didn't enjoy the, maybe it was the pacing or the episode composition, but I had trouble going through the show. However, I still liked what I was seeing. While the characters lacked much depth, they were still written well enough for you to somewhat care about them. The story was interesting since it became quite a thing in the "future", with Ideon and Macross having a similar story to them.

Favorite part of the show was the animation and art. This is a show made in 1974, and it looked absolutely gorgeous and detailed for its time. I've seen shows made before and after it that didn't look as good. They really had some talented hands on it, and possibly a big budget. While humans looked alright with the pretty Leiji designs, big plus goes to the mechanical designs. The cockpits, gauges, planes, even Yamato itself, looked really detailed and consistent.

What I didn't like was that the show had quite some plot holes. Most of them didn't get in the way of enjoyment, but there were some that were just bad. Especially the second to last deus ex machina. When Dessler launched the final attack, Yamato pulled a reflective coat out of its ass and defeated Dessler. I think I would have accepted a supernatural answer more than "I developed it secretly" which was just lazy. And of course the whole thing with Yuki dying and coming back to life was just stupid. Her sacrifice had a great impact only to revive her in the last second and have everyone happy.

It will be a 6/10 for me as well. It's a great piece of history, I still think everyone should watch it. But I can't ignore flaws because of historical values. I tried to, and I would have ignored everything if it weren't for the last episode. It was just that final drop. I'll check the next two seasons eventually, hope things improved in those.

Damn they sure shocked me with claiming Yuki was dead! Really glad she's actually still alive as she was just a great supporting character and even though the Captain's life has left him, Yamato managed to safely get back to Earth in time! Concluding this season!

That said I really do wonder what the following season will offer us but I must say that I really liked this anime from start to end, it was just a great journey!

So all in all a great anime that's for sure.

Pretty weak conclusion actually, we've had much better episodes along the way. They tried to fit way to much content into that poor episode. Killing Yuki and reviving her? If they had at least kept her dead... Same for Desler. Two instances of completely unnecessary forced drama.

This episode would have been a lot better without so many weird events:
- Desler's first "death" was obviously made in order to use him later, looking at it again, but they could have done something much better: he and the few survivors of the planet had far better things to do during all this time, hadn't he remaining forces sparsed around the universe? His second end made his survival totally worthless. (or was it the point they wanted to make?)
- some thing I forgot, ^^"
- finally, Yuki's death? What was the point here? Kôdai's love claim could have happened without it. Does it mean that the gas produced by the Cleaner was not lethal (only taking you to an apparent death state) ? It doesn't even address the issue.

About the Earth rejuvenation scene, I don't understand the complains. It looks obviously like a fast-forward process.

4/5 I liked it but the end fails to reach the best moments the show had.

A space opera whose main strength is its solid thriller aspect in what is otherwise a relatively epic adventure.
Animation and drawings were full of errors and cheap at time but the mechanical part was quite good (and I found the characters designs pretty varied despite some sayings about the women).
Some musics sound dated but the BGM was overall decent with good tracks. The voice cast was unremarkable (except Okita's voice maybe) but I found this pretty common before the 80s.

6.5+/10 Without so many weird moments and errors, it would be a good series (the age can't excuse every one of them). But it clearly stays a precedent in japanese anime's history.

I really wonder how this failed to gather a large audience during its first broadcast. It is far more accessible for the young ones than what Gundam tried to offer a few years later and presents a good quantity of what was becoming popular in those glorious times for sci-fi, the suspense component is also addictive)

So, I'll probably fly over the compilation movie to check possible changes and then go straight for the finale (the second movie).

PS: how is it possible that not a single person complained about the strong Nazi aspect in the Gamelus army (style, names) ? Usually, each anime recycling this imagery receives bad comments about it (ex: Gundam).

@garland23 Great to see people still apreciating this space thriller despite its supposed "obsolescence" (because of the deluxe OAVs remake).
If you loved this series and Gunbuster's endings, wait for the finale of the epic sequel film !

Captain's death is a thing of grace. He said 2 lines.
I'm puzzling over Yuki's resurrection, but not much. Religious? Like Lazarus's?

If they killed Yuki, she should have stayed dead. If they decided to resurrect her, there should be some kind of explanation.

So Earth was save and everyone lived happily ever after?

I didn't really expect this final episode to be that tragic, even though the very final minutes relieved that, I guess. Honestly, I never really bought the entire thing with Yuki suddenly waking up after that event. It would've been better if she just died instead, as pessimistic sounding as that is. My biggest flaw lies within the characters, as none of them really stood out to me and all felt rather generic. There was plenty of room for development, but mostly it just didn't really fulfill that potential. Anyway, it's a good show nonetheless, and even though I am looking forward to the next series, I am almost one-hundred-percent certain they will not retain the same quality that the first series had.

A weird way to end the series. Yuki's resurrection felt like a last minute decision and while I thought it was a bit of copout I'm glad she's alive in the end. They shouldn't have done it in the first place though.

Yeah, this last episodes were really bad, with a lot of things coming from nowhere. Anyway, for a series made it in 1974, this is truly a masterpiece; a solid 9/10 for me

I didn't really feel anything when Yuki died, but after watching Kodai's reaction and mourning over her, I was delighted when she woke up. If we're being honest, this series runs on sentimentality so it fits right in with the tone. The captain's death was incredibly moving. Great show.

Man, old anime suck at conveying sadness, the whole thing with Yuki in this final episode was ridiculous as well. I felt a little something for the Captains death though, at least that was foreshadowed.

An old classic, you can see it's age with it's inconsistent animation (unbelievably clanky) and sometimes even hear it's age, sound design that's a product of it's era for sure. The dialogue is often off time as well. Some questionable writing at times, especially in the latter half.

Very simple linear story on a grand scale. The Yamato looks fucking badass, way cooler than the frigates I was on during my Navy days lol

Though rare, it also had horrible and untimely comedic fanservice, you laugh at how bad it was.

5/10 overall, Kodai was also an annoying clown at times, though of course, imperfect characters does not correlate to the quality of a show, he was just getting on my nerves every so often lol.

Pretty underwhelming ending for a fairly underwhelming series. They really focused on the character relationships this episode when they didn't earlier in the show. A lot of the plot elements were interesting, but the entire show was too slow.

Spending over 20 episodes even getting near their final destination was way too long. It wouldn't have hurt the series to explore more of the lore surrounding the twin planets concept as well. It was a really interesting plot point that really didn't have much to say about. Learning about the history of Gamilus and Iscandar would've been really interesting, but there was nothing.

This really feels like a 13 episode show in terms of the sheer amount of plot, there's really only one story arc. That should sorta be expected with an older show, though. The real problem is the lack of depth in literally any of the characters aside from Captain Okita. Like, the entire rebellion plot lasted around ten minutes and featured a random red shirt instead of anyone we've gotten to know.

That's the biggest problem, any sort of drama was wrapped up almost immediately, including Yuki's death. The show had no problem giving battles and Gamilus plans multiple episodes to develop, but any shred of conflict between the characters was instantly crushed and forgotten about before it could make things interesting.

Maybe it's not that type of show, but it really just needed something in addition to the actual plot. No real lore, no real character development, and no real plot twists. It makes for a very boring experience. I suppose back in 1975 when this came out, people were expected to miss an episode here or there, and honestly, if this show were maybe 10 episodes shorter, it would be quite a bit more entertaining.

Unfortunately, as far as this shows watchability is concerned, unlike some other classics, this one really should only be watched for historical reasons, rather than any sort of entertainment.
